EDITOR'S NOTES Good afternoon and welcome to today's Hellenic League game against Shortwood United. This is our second home game against Shortwood United already this season! Our first encounter went to penalties after finishing 2-2 in 90 minutes. If that game is anything to go by, then this game will be one for the neutrals (It'll be a 0-0 draw now!). On the topic of neutrals, we've had groundhopper Craig Newton attend two of our games this season, with him in attendance at the Moreton game in the week. Check out the videos page on our website to see his thoughts and highlights.
We hope you enjoy your visit to the Mundys. Please follow all the social distancing procedures in place. If we all want to carry on attending football it's important we do as much as we can. Finally, thank you to Allan Viner who has been providing updates to games on our Twitter account! Give us a follow to keep updated if you can't make it to a game. Tom Shorey Programme Editor

THORNBURY TOWN Club History It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports became Thornbury Town FC in the early 1970’s. Mundy Playing Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope. 1968-69 we became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League. However, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation to the Bristol Premier Combination League unfortunately followed in 1976-77. The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status, never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1985-86 and 1989-90 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received. During the late 1990’s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season
4
Thornbury Town v Shortwood United
saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final. In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did come our way in 2003-04 when we defeated Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucester County Youth League. Following a number of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted in 2006–07, a new management committee and first team management were appointed. Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial
three / four year strategy, which came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games saw the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title won for the first time in the clubs history. 2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football. In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. 2013-14 saw the U18’s in their highest league position in the Gloucestershire County Youth League finishing runners-up, which was a tremendous achievement for the team and managers Simon Pirie and Mark Franklin.
The 2014-15 season was a very successful season finishing 4th in the league and winning the Les James Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Andy Davies continued to produce a team of quality which resulted in a third 4th-place in a row in Season 2016-17. 2017-18 saw the club finally succeed in their quest win the Gloucestershire County League. After a lot of work behind the scenes to gain planning permission for the required ground improvements, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League for the first time in our history. Our first season in the Hellenic League saw us finish a creditable 3rd in Div 1 West and win the Supplementary Cup. 2019-2020 season was ruled null and void due to the Coronavirus pandemic with the team poised to gain promotion. With a new management team of Jason Rees and Gary Kemp in place we look forward to the season ahead and wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours.

SHORTWOOD UNITED Club History Shortwood United Football Club was formed in 1900 and since then have played at four different grounds, Nailsworth Playing Field, Table Land, Wallow Green and finally at our current ground, Meadowbank. The club has been at Meadowbank since 1972, and includes an all weather training area opened by the late Ted Croker. Gradual improvements over the years culminated in a major enhancement in 2009 to meet ground grading criteria for any future promotions. League football was commenced in the Stroud League where following continued success during the 1970s promotion was gained to the Northern Senior and then the Gloucestershire County League. Promotion to the Hellenic league was achieved in 1981 only to be relegated in our first season but finishing runners up the following year ensured promotion straight back. In 1983 we won the Hellenic Division One Cup and GFA Trophy and in the following year won the Hellenic League. It was a further six years until success was realised again when the treble of League winners, GFA Trophy and Stroud Charity Cup was completed. The 2007/08 season started a resurgence in Shortwood’s fortunes in finishing 5th in the league and winning the supplementary cup, defeating Ardley 4-2 in the final. The subsequent season pushed our success even further when following a good run in the FA Cup and semi finalists in the League Cup, we pressed the eventual Champions Hungerford to the final day of the season where we lost out on goal difference after amassing 99 pts and scoring 99 goals. Shortwood’s fine form continued into the next season when they again finished second in the league to Almondsbury, and runners up in the GFA Trophy again to Almondsbury, had good FA Cup and Vase runs and reached the final of the Floodlit cup. Having lost the away leg 3-0 to Reading Town they produced one of the most exciting comebacks and entertaining matches ever seen at Meadowbank where the score remained at 0-0 till the 67th minute when the deadlock was broken and Shortwood ran out 5-0 winners (AET). Shortwood’s league campaign in 2011 was a disappointment by their own high standards, but more silverware was added in the shape of the GFA Trophy
10
Thornbury Town v Shortwood United
after a 1-0 win over Tuffley Rovers in the final. 2011-12 season, however, was pivotal in the Club’s history! Not only did they reach the quarter final of the FA Vase, they also reached the final of the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup and the GFA Trophy Final. Most important was their league position where they finished 2nd by 1 point behind Oxford City Nomads. With Nomad’s not applying for promotion, and with Shortwood filling all the relevant criteria, they were promoted to the Southern League for the first time in their history! The 2012-13 season was again a successful one. Following a disappointing early exit from the FA cup the club had a good run in the FA Trophy including a magnificent away victory at premier league side Weymouth on the way. In their first season in the Southern League they finished a creditable eighth position. The 2013-14 season saw Shortwood progress further in the FA Cup than ever before! Early wins over Egham and Aylesbury put them up against Conference South outfit Dorchester and a 1-0 away win, and a further 1-0 win at Didcot put them into uncharted waters of the fourth qualifying round where they drew Conference side Aldershot at Meadowbank. A late, but deserved, equaliser gave them a replay and a heroic 2-1 win sparked wild celebrations. A home draw pitted Shortwood against League 1 side Port Vale in front of a record crowd of 1,247 plus a live television audience courtesy of BT Sport. Shortwood bowed out – but with the plaudits their cup run earned ringing in their ears. The league season was also highly successful with a sixth placed finish, one point outside the play-off positions. 2014-15 failed to reach the heights of the previous season with many players moving on to higher things but for most of the season a play-off place looked possible until a decline in form towards the end of the season resulted in an 11th place finish. 2015 -16 continued Shortwood’s continued stability in the Southern League as they finished the season 7th in the table with 78 points and the end of the season saw the
end of an era as joint Manager John Evans retired after 20 seasons involvement with Shortwood – and the club moved forward with Alex Sykes now in sole charge. 2016-17 Was a strange season with the Wood exiting the FA Cup and the FA Trophy at the first hurdle and showing inconsistent league form but despite that they managed to finish a more than respectable 9th. Paul ‘Des’ Meredith took over the management reins at the start of season 2017-18. In 2017 -18 The club had an excellent run in the FA Trophy and produced some excellent results in the league interspersed with some heavy defeats but this was only to be expected with a very young side – but throughout the year they strived to play football the Shortwood way. After Christmas Shortwood faced a difficult dilemma. The ever increasing demands of the FA around ground gradings and the loss of their major sponsor left the club with no choice but to resign from the Southern League and they applied to the FA to be placed in the Toolstation Western League and they were successful in that application. Des Meredith did not feel that he could carry on with a complete rebuild of the side and departed and the club moved on with Jason Scrivens and Joey Tustain taking the helm. They did a tremendous job getting a squad together in next to no time in almost impossible circumstances.
Hellenic Div 1 West, but the future is more optimistic than for a very long time. Shortwood’s two youth sides enjoyed an incredibly successful season and with the reintroduction of a Development side for season 2019 / 20 the club is rebuilding and giving young local players a complete chance to progress. Mat Blythe has been added as joint manager with Jason Scrivens, and Simon Blythe was added as 1st team Coach. With Chris Hicks and Shane Mathews taking the reins of the Development side the club is on an even keel and all connected to the club can look forward to the season. The COVID pandemic saw the cancellation of the season 2019 20 in March 2020 with the first team lying in a healthy 4th place in the league During the enforced break Mat Blythe became sole first team manager appointing Ian Soule as his number two. Shortwood have retained most of last season’s squad and have added a few exciting additions. In these turbulent times the club moves on with hope for an exciting season for both its senior sides and the flourishing youth set up.
Shortwood finished bottom of the Toolstation Premier in 2018-19 and we were relegated and moved to the

THORNBURY TOWN 2 GARDNER, WORMWELL
MALVERN TOWN 0 MATCH SPONSORED BY GLOBAL CYCLING NETWORK Another large and socially distanced crowd witnessed one of the best nights under lights at the Mundy’s as Thornbury beat title favourites Malvern. Once again injuries forced changes and names usually first on the team sheet, Craig Lancastle, Nathan Sage and Mark Viner, sat out. Malvern can think themselves lucky as early as the first minute when Luke Franklin released Harry Brock who was brought down in the area by the last defender. The referee, who was apparently unsighted, waved play on and the visitors were neither a goal or a man down. Malvern just edged the possession as their wing backs got forward more than the hosts’ but the corners produced were either well claimed by Parkin or defended well at the near post. The last few minutes of the half saw some of the better action as firstly a Malvern free-kick hit the crossbar with the resulting follow up finish being ruled out for offside by an early flag from the assistant. Franklin was brought
down on the edge in time added on and the resulting kick going just over. Nil-nil at the break. A couple of minutes in Malvern hit the woodwork again, this time the inside of the post. The 50th minute saw the injured Brock replaced by Elliot Gardner and barely five minutes later he scored with his first touch of the game! - a cross from Wormwell headed in at the near post. The middle of the half saw the combative Brandon Benjamin sin-binned for ten minutes but the ten men soaked up the pressure, put their bodies on the line and kept the sheet clean. Harry Walton replaced James DeRosa with ten left and some neat passing and possession saw Thornbury get closer to the line. In time added on a strong run by Gardner saw his shot saved by the ‘keeper and the ball run free for Wormwell to stroke the ball home to the loudest cheer of the night. Early days but Thornbury sit unbeaten in fourth place in the table having played four of the top six teams. Man of the Match = Luke Franklin

HEREFORD PEGASUS 2 MOREIRA, WORTHING
THORNBURY TOWN 3 BENJAMIN, DEROSA, FARTHING After a disappointing display and exit from the FA Vase the week before it was back to league action for a Thornbury side gradually getting players back off the treatment table. Craig Lancastle and Harry Brock started up front for the first time in six games and Nathan Sage took a spot in the back three. The first ten minutes saw Hereford, more comfortable at home on their 4G surface, have a few tame efforts comfortably dealt with by Kurtis Parkin but after that Thornbury started to put some passes together although the resulting string of corners didn’t come to anything. It was then the home side’s turn to exert some pressure and on 20 minutes the lively Carlos Moreira was brought down in the box and he stepped up to give them the lead from the penalty spot. The lead was almost doubled shortly afterwards but the rest of the half was all Thornbury’s as firstly Brock hit the post followed by James DeRosa getting on the end of a good Jacob Farthing run & cross for the equaliser. More free-kicks and corners followed for the visitors but the sides couldn’t be separated at the break. The second half started at pace with both sides having decent chances – Parkin saving

well with his legs. When Brock was brought down in the area the referee didn’t see a foul and was forced to speak to both dugouts as tempers flared. Hereford came close in the 62nd minute when a long range free-kick hit the bar and on 67’ some neat Hereford football found captain Rory Worthing on the edge of the area and he curled his effort inside the far post to regain the lead. With a quarter left Harry Walton replaced DeRosa and minutes later a strong run from Brandon Benjamin saw him finish in the bottom corner. Thornbury now had the upper hand and a couple of chances for Lancastle went begging and Brock was pulled back when clear. With the game drifting towards a draw there was more action in injury time, both sides having a chance - the difference being a fine save by Parkin and Farthing firing home from a Joe Guest cross for a last minute winner! Thornbury remain unbeaten in the league with the potential advantage of having only played teams in the top half of the table.
