When Amleset and her husband were diagnosed with HIV, the stigma in their city was so prevalent that they were afraid to send their children to school. They moved to a more accepting village, but had to turn to begging. The family’s resilience paid off when they found an artisan cooperative. “I am happy when I come to work.” Amleset said.
“My heart and eyes are open. My life has been changed.”

Jody works in Silicon Valley, an industry dominated by men. a story of belonging in Bolivia In Bolivia, sex trafficking is endemic. One woman entered into prostitution hoping she could pay off her debts and then leave, but she found herself trapped. Her world transformed when she joined an artisan cooperative.
“It’s my family,” she says of the co-op. “It’s my people. It’s my life.”

When Jen found Threads in 2015, she was brand new to Denver. She didn’t know anyone, didn’t have a support system. When Megala was 12 years old, her stepfather, desperate for money, took her to be sold into the sex trade. Miraculously, authorities intervened. Megala moved to an aftercare home where she began taking jewelry classes, earning an income, and attending school. Megala has come out of this experience stronger than ever. She now dreams of becoming a social worker so she can help other young girls escape trafficking.

By investing in education, Harshali is breaking the cycle of poverty, creating a brighter future for her family and her country.

When Marla first joined an artisan cooperative, she dreamed that her daughters would graduate from high school. Since then, one of her daughters has graduated and the other two are on their way. Marla’s dreams are now overflowing with possibility: she hopes to travel the world and study to become a pediatrician.
