e started Threads Worldwide to create life-changing work for women around the world. After traveling the globe together, we dreamed of expanding others’ opportunity by providing access to a strong market to those who would otherwise be limited in their potential. Since we started in 2011, we have developed relationships with Artisan Partners who employ women and provide the opportunity to thrive, not just survive. Through the fair trade of artisan jewelry, we empower women from Kenya to Ecuador to make their dreams a reality—from sending all of their children to school and accessing much needed healthcare, to making their homes safer and starting their own businesses. In the United States, we have brought global shopping experiences into hundreds of homes and communities around the country, educating people on the power of their purchases and sharing the artisans’ stories. We empower women in the United States to make a difference in the world as Fair Trade Partners, earning an income with their own social impact businesses and accomplishing their personal goals from paying for family vacations, to leaving jobs, to donating to important causes. This fall, we are celebrating partnership. Together, our Threads Home Office, Artisan Partners, and Fair Trade Partners have become more than an operation, we have become a movement— thriving in the spirit of unity. Together we are showing the world to shop with heart. We draw our power from teamwork and solidarity, and know that apart we can only envision a dream—together we can create a reality. After a friend of mine asked me if I was interested, I took a leap of faith and started as a Fair Trade Partner with Threads. This choice has let me spend the majority of my time with my six-month-old adorable daughter. We had the privilege of meeting Asanta and the women she works with while traveling in Guatemala. Asanta is the mother of two and leader of a thriving cooperative of women who handcraft many of our bracelets. Asanta has gained respect from her husband, in-laws, and community by bringing sustainable work to other women and their households. Not only have the women earned enough to improve their homes with solar light bulbs, smokeless stoves and water filters, they have also developed friendships and a community where their children can thrive.

After I went to a Threads Artisan Showcase I posted my purchase on Facebook and had such a great response (even selling a few bracelets) that I knew I needed to get started as a Fair Trade Partner. I love the new people I get to meet at Showcases and the friendships that I’m growing along-side my business. The artisans we work with in Indonesia earn a higher wage at the fair trade cooperative than in the typical factory setting, where wages are set, and low, even for the talented silversmiths. This cooperative posts the volitile minimum wages set by the Indonesian government so artisans know how much more they are earning for their families. Karyawati adopted her daughter with the income she earned by hancrafting silver INDONESIA jewelry. With her sustainable income she was also able to build a small workshop so she can work at home and take care of her daughter instead of having to travel into the larger city over an hour away. Karyawati also improved her home by adding proper plumbing and upgrading her bathroom.
