MEET DAVID GRUBB:
Master of Kitchen and Bath Design
David Grubb has designed over 4000 custom kitchens and baths over the past 22 years. He works with homeowners and builders to create the most beautiful and functional kitchen and bath spaces in Southwest Louisiana. Thrive magazine recently chatted with Grubb about the kitchen and bath design process. How did you get started in the kitchen and bath design business? I started in this business with the intention to remodel homes for the elderly using universal design concepts which then took me to kitchen design for a national Big Box chain. I began designing with Kraftmaid cabinets in 1998 and came to Stine in 2003. Since then, we have expanded the cabinet program and offer a variety of cabinets to meet the needs of all our customers. I have taken the National Kitchen Bath Association (NKBA) classes which include the Master’s Class. NKBA is the group that developed scientific methods using 41 guidelines to properly design kitchen and bath spaces. This ensures a functional 6

flow and eliminates common mishaps and problems that can occur during kitchen remodels.
Ideally, what information should a customer bring when he or she visits you? First thing would be a completion date in mind and whether it's new construction or remodel. If you're remodeling a home, a kitchen makeover can take two months on average. If you're building a new home, meet with your kitchen designer before the slab is poured. Reason being, small adjustments with rough opening placements (vanities, windows, etc.) and island plumbing can be requested of the contractor without incurring an increased expense.
What additional preferences or insights can customers share with you? Customers should have an idea of the style they want. We encourage customers to bring in pictures from Pinterest, home decor magazines, etc. From there, our kitchen designers can walk you through different styles based on ideas that have inspired you. In addition to the overall style of cabinetry, there are many kitchen accessories and gadgets to consider. I’m not requesting customers provide me with all the details, but it helps me to get a feel for what style of kitchen they want.

Once the customer has given you an idea of what style kitchen they want, what else do you need to get started on their project? I need to know their budget. At Stine we offer eight different lines of cabinets at different price points: KraftMaid, Quality, WoodStar, Tru, Mid-Continent, Schrock, AristoKraft, and KitchenKompact. We offer cabinetry for the least expensive apartment complexes as well as cabinets for the nicest custom homes and everything in between. If you plan to sell your home in a short period of time, you might choose less expensive cabinets. But if you're going to stay in your home for an extended period of time, enjoying your kitchen as the social center of the home, you may want to invest a little more in your kitchen project.
What is the best value in cabinetry that Stine offers? KraftMaid offers a tremendously well-constructed cabinet with a lifetime warranty. Depending on the door style, you can control pricing to where it’s very affordable. Or you can design a glamorous kitchen using a more expensive wood, like cherry. KraftMaid offers everything you can imagine to accessorize your kitchen cabinets and increase the functionality and storage. It’s a forward-thinking company that designs storage solutions for problems we didn’t even know existed! KraftMaid utilizes designers’ input to improve their products. For example, I designed their Breslin Door – one of four doors they introduced nationwide this year and is anticipated to be a top-seller. As Stine designers, we can contribute new KraftMaid design ideas and are fortunate to have such a great partner in helping our customers kitchen and bath dreams come true.

Make yourself AT HOME. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of moving into your home and making it your own. Lakeside can get you into your dream home, with flexible home loan options to fit your budget. Whether it’s your first home or your next home, there’s no place like Lakeside for affordable home loans.
BENEFITS OF HOMEOWNERSHIP
CreateEnduringAppeal While much attention has been placed on the record number of young adults who are delaying homeownership, recent research shows that 70% of Americans still believe that owning a home is an essential part of the American Dream.
myLKSB.bank | 474.3766 Lake Charles Sulphur Westlake
The nationwide survey of more than 11,300 registered voters commissioned by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) last year found that homeownership endures as the foundation of the American dream. The benefits of owning your own home are numerous — for you and for your community, says Laurie Bonsall, Loan Officer with Lakeside Bank’s mortgage department. “You build financial strength and emotional wellbeing for you and your family, and at the same time, as a homeowner, you promote increased stability for the surrounding community.” Bonsall says, building equity and accruing wealth when the value of your home appreciates are among the longer-term financial benefits of homeownership. “The home equity you build increases your net worth.” Then, once a year at tax time, Bonsall says you get a reminder of another advantage of owning a home –the mortgage interest deduction and the real estate tax deduction. Those who itemize their federal income tax deductions can deduct 100 percent of their mortgage interest payments on a first or second home, up to a maximum mortgage amount of $1 million. On average, 70 percent of homeowners with a mortgage claim this deduction and 90 percent of all mortgage interest paid gets deducted, according to NAHB.
1-800-SHELTER ShelterInsurance.com
Homeownership also increases stability for you and for the community where you live. Homeowners are less likely than renters to move every year or two. Once you settle in, you make friends, get to know the neighbors and develop a sense of community — and that’s a motivation to help maintain a safe and thriving environment for you, your family and your neighbors. Commitment to a community fosters civic participation. Through volunteering, school and church activities, and property maintenance, homeowners contribute to making strong and healthy neighborhoods.

CONSIDERING NEW CONSTRUCTION?
How to Find the Right Builder for You
If you’re thinking about buying a new home, one key decision you’ll have to make is finding a home builder. Working with an experienced, professional builder can make a difference when it comes to creating your dream home. Seeking out a home builder that will meet your expectations involves targeted research and asking the right questions. Below are some steps you can take to find a builder who is right for you.
Make a List of Potential Builders
With so many companies to choose from the best first step is to make a list of potential builders. The Home Builders Association of SWLA has a list of builders who work in this area. If you want to add more names to your list, consider reviewing the real estate section of the local newspaper for builders and projects. Many builders advertise what type of homes they construct and may offer a price range. Another great source is local real estate agents or asking friends and relatives for recommendations.
Ask Questions
Once you’ve generated a robust list of potential builders, reach out and ask questions. You can start by asking about associated costs in the short and long term such as financing options, fees, homeowner’s association dues and estimated taxes on the property. Don’t forget to secure references of recent buyers. A professional builder will be able to provide you with names and contact information of customers. When you connect with a reference, talk to them about their experience working with the builder in terms of planning, timelines and budgeting.

Once you’ve narrowed down your list, make sure the home builder has substantial experience building the type of home you want. You can ask to see model homes, example floor plans and design options. Some builders have professional designations which is a sign that the builder has expertise in a specific area of building, for example, Certified Green Builder (CGP).
Establish Communication Expectations
Before you agree to work with a home builder, make sure to establish communication expectations. You both should agree on how often to connect to discuss updates throughout the project. It is best to determine what communication channel (email, text or phone) fits your needs. Taking this small but important step will help eliminate any confusion in the home building process and avoid damaging your relationship with your builder. To meet local home building professionals and learn more about the home building process, contact the Home Builders Association of SWLA at 337-478-7893, www.hbaswla.org.

HOW TO DESIGN YOUR
HOME OFFICE
for Maximum Productivity
In a connected world, working outside a traditional office is now a viable option for employees across the country. According to recent U.S. Census data approximately eight million people work from home. If you work from a home office, it is important to create a separate space for productivity with minimal distraction. One of the benefits of a home office is the ability to design a custom workspace. If you need ideas to spruce up your home office or if you are designing a space for the first time, consider the following tips.
Create a well-lit space. Experts recommend plenty of natural
light for your workspace. As you’re setting up an area for your home office, consider placing your workspace near a window or skylight. Direct sunlight may create a glare on your screens or devices so setting up your work station near natural light is preferred. If you have a different lighting preference, adjustable lamps can help you place your lighting source exactly where you need it.
Select a storage solution. For optimal productivity you want to make sure your space has all the items you need to complete your task within reach. Bookshelves are ideal for reference items and manuals. Filing cabinets can help you organize and store loose papers. If you’re completely paperless and use only electronic devices for your job, make sure you have a sufficient amount of outlets for various connection cords. Design an ergonomic space. When you select your home office
furniture try not to focus only on design – think about function too. Sitting at a desk and typing for an extended period of time can be painful for your back, neck or wrist. An ergonomic space, a design to increase comfort and shows they can help purify air in your home. If you add greenery to efficiency, is key for any work area. To help you stay comfortable in your your home office space make sure your plants have enough airflow and home office, make sure your computer monitor is at least an arm’s length sunlight. Common home office plants are spider, snake, peace lily and fern. away. Your chair height should be adjustable with your knees to support These plants are low maintenance but do require some upkeep so consider your spine. what type of care they need before purchasing. HOW TO SOLVE A
StorageShortage Finding storage solutions for things like blankets, books, seasonal clothes and countless other items that often take over your living areas can seem challenging. But there are many practical and attractive ways to incorporate storage all throughout your home.
Under-Bed Compartments
A surprising number of people underutilize one of the best storage locations: beneath the bed. Especially for smaller bedrooms, underbed storage can free up valuable floor space and make way for other furniture like a chaise or a full-length mirror. Large plastic bins are usually an economical alternative, but they can be unsightly if they peek out from beneath your bed. Consider fabric-lined baskets, or industrialstyle metal or wood boxes that roll on small castors. When buying new furnishings, look for beds with built-in storage drawers or cubbies.
Built-in Shelves
Free-standing bookshelves serve a function, but built-in shelves can be “wow factors” that significantly enhance the character of a room. Either bordering a fireplace or large window, built-in shelves are a great investment with a dual purpose of adding storage and providing an area to display photos and décor. A cabinet maker or other woodworking professional can build one to fit your home’s unique dimensions. Or a local remodeler can help you with design and installation.

Neighborhood Mini Storage offers moving and storage services including U-Haul rentals, UPS and FedEx shipping, and packing supplies. We have regular and climate controlled self-storage units with 24-hour access for your convenience.

Wall-Mounted Storage
Your walls are meant for more than just hanging pictures, paintings and mirrors. They can also function as places to hold day-to-day items like umbrellas, bags and coats near an entryway. Mounting shelves, drawers or mirrors with hooks can be functional and fun. Or get creative with unique items found at antique shops or yard sales that could serve as hanging devices, even if that is not their primary purpose. Just make sure you securely and properly affix items to your wall to avoid damage. Always use the studs in your wall or the appropriate hanging hardware. If you are unsure, have a handyman or contractor help you, especially for larger items that could cause harm to a person or damage to your home if mounted improperly.
Garage and Large Items
When there is extra space in a garage, shed, basement, large closet or even an underused room in your home, remember there are numerous shelving options to help you optimize the vertical spaces. A shelf bisecting an otherwise open closet can give you twice the space. Shelves with totes, baskets or doors are functional and can add charm to the room. Adding storage can help breathe new life into your home. And if done well, those solutions will be long-lasting features that typically offer a solid return on your investment if you ever decide to sell your home.
