GET GREENER, HAPPI ER THIS SUMMER Whether you take shorter showers, reduce food waste or make eco-minded choices at the grocery store, adopting one simple habit can make a difference in protecting Earth’s natural resources this summer. According to findings from a scientific study and survey commissioned by Tetra Pak, adopting simple renewable lifestyle habits can help people go from feeling glum to good. According to the survey, a majority of people—70 percent—feel happier when they make choices that help preserve natural resources. This study comes on the heels of the world’s first social experiment in renewability, conducted by three esteemed academic experts in habit and behavioral science, which uncovered how renewable lifestyle choices—habits that help preserve natural resources— influence levels of happiness.

Your Kid. Your Choice.

Make the right one.

Your young athlete is one-of-a-kind. And you should know, you’re their biggest fan, behind them all the way. So when they have a sports injury, don’t stay on the sidelines. Take an active role in getting them back in the game and choose the region’s most experienced orthopaedic and sports medicine team: Center for Orthopaedics.

Clever Ways to Keep Kids Learning

In your own backyard Staycations aren’t just for those on a limited budget; they provide an opportunity for the family to research and explore places in their neighborhoods. From a hike in a state park to a day at the county fair, there are lots of places to go near you.

Summer is here and that means it’s time for baseball games, barbecues, camping trips and other vacations. However, it’s also a time for continued learning, whether you’re staying at home or out on the go exploring your community and beyond. Research shows that children who don’t read over the summer risk losing up to three months of important skills they obtained during the school year, and for students from economically disadvantaged communities, as many as 80 percent are at risk of falling behind academically. “The summer learning slide is an issue for most children,” said Carol H. Rasco, president and CEO of Reading Is Fundamental. “To minimize learning loss, we have developed activities and booklists to inspire the imaginations of children of all ages this summer.” Whether families are planning a staycation or a vacation to a far away destination, reading and sharing stories together is easier than ever. Always have a book, mobile phone or tablet handy for reading and use these activities to help your children thrive during the summer months.

• Visit a museum or art gallery. When you get home, use sidewalk chalk to make your own mural or paint your own masterpiece. • Have a “book-nic.” Grab a blanket, snacks and books to celebrate a beautiful summer day together. • Plan a backyard camping trip for friends. List all the things you will need to survive the night outside, including a flashlight to read scary stories. • Visit the library and check out books about local birds or insects. Go on an adventure walk to see what ones you can find in your neighborhood. • Walk around your neighborhood and look at the houses. Draw pictures of your favorites and make up stories about someone who might be in them.

Vacations and adventures are filled with easy ways to expand your child’s mind, vocabulary and creative side. Be sure to talk about what you see, where you’re going and what you loved most about your trip. • Hit the library before you leave, or download 50 free e-books at RIF.org/50ebooks, to make sure everyone in the family has a book to enjoy during downtime. • Play the alphabet game and find objects beginning with letters from A-Z while traveling. • Browse online and look at maps together to identify where you will visit, how far you will travel and keep track of any must-see places or must-do activities along your route. • Write letters to friends and family. Tell them all about your adventures away from home. • Keep an explorer’s journal. Draw pictures of your favorite sites and keep notes about what you learned and how places differ from home. Top 5 Benefits of Exercise for Kids

YOUR

All kids benefit The percentage of obese kids and teens has more than doubled in the past 30 years. All children, even less-coordinated ones, need to be physically active. Activity is especially helpful for the physical and psychological wellbeing of children with weight problems.

IS OUR SPECIALTY at Crawford Orthodontics

Exercise develops healthy habits Kids who exercise regularly at an early age develop healthy habits into adulthood. Parents who are role models for active lifestyles provide children with opportunities for increased physical activity and the family makes healthy decisions together. Exercise improves behaviour Strong evidence suggests that physical activity, outdoor play and time in nature improve behaviour problems in kids of all ages. Exercise has helped reduce ADHD symptoms in children as their stress levels fall within minutes of exercising.

Summer is the perfect time to begin orthodontic treatment, and we offer a variety of advanced techniques that create great smiles, and provide:

increased comfort • advanced technology • faster results

We accept most insurance and flexible benefit plans, and offer affordable, convenient payment plans to fit any budget, including nodown payment options.

Exercise prevents disease Physical activity helps kids control weight, lower blood pressure, raise HDL (“good”) cholesterol, reduces the risk of diabetes and strengthens children’s bone mass.

We’ll give you–and your kids– something to smile about.

Exercise improves sleep Physically fit kids sleep better and handle physical and emotional challenges more effectively. Active kids enjoy improved psychological well being, including self-confidence and higher self-esteem. Research shows that exercise promotes improved school attendance and enhances academic performance.

4 Steps for Raising Happy Children If you ask young parents how to best raise children, they’ll give a variety of answers. But ask them what they ultimately want for their children, and the answer is probably the same, according to Roger Herst, author of A Simple Formula for Raising Happy Children—parents want their kids to be happy. Raising children to be happy later in life is not about the luck of the draw,” says Herst. “Happy adults are people who make good decisions. Therefore, if you want your kids to be happy, encourage them to improve their decisionmaking so they can develop into happy people.” Herst offers these tangible steps: Never make a decision for children that they can make for themselves. If parents want children to make good decisions that yield success and happiness as an adult, they must let them practice trial and error. Unilateral decisions made by parents obstruct the decisionresults perspective for kids—and kids need the practice. Don’t worry about sheltering them from failure. Failure works best as a lesson when a child is able to own their decisions. Lead and show by example. Kids imitate more than they listen. For young parents with very small children, it may not have dawned on them that the “Do as I say, not as I do” idiom doesn’t work for child rearing. “Eat your vegetables because they’re good for you” doesn’t work alone. However, a father who participates in vegetable eating, and shows approval when a child eats them, will see more veggie consumption, Herst says.

Summer education Safe Sitter® Classes

from Lake Area Medical Center.

Safe Sitter® is a hands-on class that teaches boys and girls ages 11 to 13 how to handle emergencies and care for children safely.

Ask your children for their advice. This is an exercise to encourage independent thought. Asking children for their advice lets them know you care about and respect their perspective, which tells them that their voice matters. It also lets them know they are responsible for their opinions, which have impact on the real world. Practice negotiation. A child often doesn’t play by the rules of gentlemanly negotiation, which feature an adversarial element. The younger they are, the less they think that their parent’s interests are the same as the child’s interest. Start by offering an alternative to their wish if you’d prefer an alternative to their request. If they don’t like your suggestion, ask questions to yield a sensible middle ground. Good parents are not tyrants.
