Building a Legacy of Excellence

Alfred Palma LLC is one of Southwest Louisiana’s most respected full-service commercial and industrial general contractors. Our founder, Alfred A. Palma Jr., offers our clients 60 years of experience in the construction industry. He founded Alfred Palma LLC in 1986, during a time when the regional economy was weak and chances for growth were limited. But he and his son James, who joined the company soon after it opened, defied the odds. 34 years later, Alfred and James, now co-owner and vice president, continue to lead the family-owned corporation. They specialize in large-scale projects, from churches and schools to industrial, hospitality and public facilities – and everything in between. NAME YOU KNOW, ATTORNEYS YOU TRUST Sudduth and Associates has a storied history in Southwest Louisiana. James E. “James” Sudduth, III’s grandfather, James E. “Jim” Sudduth, worked in public service for 50 years (including as mayor of Lake Charles from 1965-1973) and later opened an economic consulting firm. James father, James E. “Bo” Sudduth, II, used the family name for property management and development. In 2013, upon his graduation from law school, James approached Bo about using the family trade name to open a law firm in the Lake Charles area. At the time, James was a prosecutor with the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s Office, where he had spent two years serving as an Assistant District Attorney prosecuting misdemeanor and felony matters. Sudduth joined the District Attorney’s Office fresh out of law school (Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center) with aspirations of one day opening up a firm of his own in his hometown. Sudduth and Associates, LLC is now composed of attorneys and staff who collectively have 100 years of legal experience. They specialize in a wide variety of law concentrations, but they focus primarily on Criminal Defense, Labor and Employment Law, Family and Domestic Law, Personal Injury, Civil Litigation and Worker’s Compensation. Sudduth and Associates, LLC welcomed James R. Morris in early 2020 as their office’s new Of Counsel attorney. After 40 years as a solo practitioner, Morris joined Sudduth and Associates to provide the firm with his experience and expertise in Worker’s Compensation and Personal Injury Law. After five years of planning, architectural revisions, permitting, and construction, James finished the historic renovation, construction, and expansion of the over 100-year-old historic McLeod Family Home in the heart of Lake Charles, Louisiana. In July of 2018, the law firm Sudduth and Associates, LLC moved into its beautiful new facility where the firm continues to grow and provide new services to its existing family of clients and those new clients that join the family daily.

Few things define a community as well as locally-owned businesses, whether small mom and pop shops or large bustling industries. These companies support both our local and state economy and infuse our culture with a unique identity and vibe. The COVID-19 pandemic delivered an unexpected blow to businesses across the globe, including here in Southwest Louisiana; but local business owners have been working mightily to continue delivering products and services to their loyal customers. In this year’s Homegrown issue, Thrive magazine celebrates the cultural and economic contributions of local businesses to our resilient community. In these pages, you’ll read of the steadfast efforts of The SWLA Economic Development Alliance to support area businesses. You’ll find inspiring stories of perseverance and discover proprietors and services you may not have been aware of. Now more than ever, we encourage you to “shop local” and support area businesses through these challenging economic times.

Our region is getting back to business after months of quarantine and we can speed up our economic recovery by spending money at our local businesses while following social distancing guidelines and encouraging our friends and neighbors to do so as well. Buying local supports our neighbors. Currently, there are several programs already working towards the same goals and are a great resource in finding local businesses that are open and need your support. Two of these programs are ChooseLocalSWLA and #ShopSafelyLC, a social media campaign that spotlights businesses taking social distancing measures.

ChooseLocalSWLA encourages the community to shop locally. Volunteers have researched other programs nationwide and gathered information on the benefits of shopping locally. As a test run, the group reached out to small businesses that focused on retail and food service to put together and distribute a Small Business Saturday guide which was accessed nearly 3000 times directly through the SWLA Economic Development Alliance’s Facebook page and also shared to a wider audience through KPLC’s social media. These efforts are backed by the Chamber SWLA, Healthy Image, Image 360, and more. As the campaign progresses, we expect more media partners to sign on. In order to maintain a safe environment, we ask that all businesses adhere to the guidelines outlined by the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Louisiana Department of Health. Local Banking at its Best 5-Star Rating for Strength and Stability. Top 200 Bank in United States - Only One in Louisiana Some banks never earn the double level of recognition listed above, but Lakeside Bank has received both prestigious rankings multiple times, and both this year, as they celebrate their 10th anniversary. The 5-Star rating is the highest possible awarded by Bauer Financial, the nation’s leading independent bank rating firm. This rating denotes the absolute highest level of banking performance and indicates the institution is safe, financially sound and operating well above its regulatory capital requirements. Receiving an A+ rating earned Lakeside a spot on Deposit Accounts’ “Top 200 Healthiest Banks in America” annual report. Lakeside was the only bank in Louisiana to be included in the 2020 Top 200 list. Each year, DepositAccounts.com looks at the financial health of over 10,000 banks and credit unions in the United States. Banks are evaluated based on several factors, including capitalization, deposit growth and loan-to-reserve ratios, and ranked on a scale from F (worst) to A+ (healthiest). “We’re honored to receive this level of recognition from such respected and prestigious companies as Bauer Financial and as DepositAccounts.com,” said Roy M. Raftery, Jr., President and CEO of Lakeside Bank. “What this means for our customers is the peace of mind that comes from having a bank recognized for the safety and security of their banking practices. So, if you are looking for a safe bank for your money in these challenging economic times, maybe it should be Lakeside.” A well-recognized name in the banking industry, Raftery joined Lakeside earlier this year. He previously served as President and CEO of Cameron State Bank for 19 years.

While there, he built a reputation for his unwavering commitment to personalized, local banking services. Lakeside was founded on the same premise, and Raftery has already begun to expand on the bank’s 10-year foundation of strong growth. He’s added some familiar, experienced bankers who worked with him in the past to the Roy M. Raftery, Jr. President and CEO Lakeside team, including experienced commercial lender Bobby Broussard at the main office in Lake Charles, and experienced loan officer and branch manager Jamie Schiro at the Westlake branch. Lakeside offers a full range of personal and business banking services, with quick, local decision-making, more personalized service and relationships with experienced bankers who are accessible and invested in the financial security of their customers. “As we begin our second decade, Lakeside is wellpositioned for continued growth and success,” said Raftery. “We are committed to always giving our customers the convenience and service they deserve.” To find out more about the healthiest, fastest growing, community and customer-focused local bank in Southwest Louisiana, call Lakeside at 337-474-3766 or visit www.mlksb.bank.

Healthy Image: Thriving for 18 Years Eighteen years ago, Kristy Armand and Christine Fisher were cheering together in a hospital parking lot. They had just landed their first client, and they weren’t sure what to do next. There was no business plan or startup money – they barely had a name. What they did have was a shared vision, experience and a reputation for doing good, thorough work. That’s how Healthy Image began, and it’s been steady growth ever since. In 2007 they were joined by a third partner, graphic designer Barbara VanGossen. The three had worked together for years on various projects in their previous position and were already a tight-knit team. Healthy Image moved over the years from home offices, to a first small office; then to a larger office and expanding that. In 2017, the agency moved into their new, permanent office building in Lake Charles. The new building offers ample space for the agency to serve over 120 local, regional and national clients. The 12 team members offer a full range of marketing services, including strategic planning, advertising, public relations, graphic design, corporate communication, video production, photography, social media management, website development, event planning and more – basically anything a client needs that falls under the marketing or image-management umbrella.

As communicators, not just advertisers, the team work to tell each client’s story to the people who need to hear it, and there are many different ways to do that, especially with the growth in online media options. Earlier this year, Healthy Image reached another milestone, with the addition of a fourth partner, longtime employee, Shonda Manuel, who is a graphic designer and photographer. Nearly two years after starting Healthy Image in 2002, Armand and Fisher founded Thrive magazine as a small quarterly publication focused on topics for better living. With VanGossen’s help, it matured to a full-color, high-quality, award-winning monthly magazine distributed throughout SWLA and Southeast Texas. Healthy Image has been recognized on the local, regional and national level for business growth and achievement, and while the recognition and awards are appreciated – and humbling – what matters most to the owners and their team is knowing they are helping their clients achieve their goals. They love what they do and feel their success comes from helping others be successful.

Fuerst, Carrier & Ogden was created with the purpose of catering to families, and is believed to be the only Lake Charles law firm who dedicates more than 90% of its practice to family law. Our attorneys provide over 50 combined years of family law specific experience. FCO is truly dedicated to the practice of family law, but any family law attorney knows that the law is only part of the process. Our real purpose is to help achieve positive, practical solutions to the difficult realities encountered with divorce, custody, support and other family issues.

FCO’s attorneys are highlighted on the next page, but the firm wouldn’t be capable of advocating for hundreds of families every year without our extremely competent and talented paralegals: Tanya Camel, Virginia “Crissy” Damerell, Kristy Belaire and Robin Reed. The paralegals at FCO are the lifeblood of the operation, which is organized and run through the management of Diana Burnworth (office manager) and Gabrielle Murillo (Asst. office manager).

GLOBAL ASSET MANAGEMENT GROUP Taking your life and your investments…FORWARD.

L

ake Charles native Tim Andreas has worked in the business of money management since 2001,but when he realized Wall Street was more concerned about cashing in than assisting their clients, he set a new course. In 2013, he opened Andreas Global Asset Management Group where, with integrity, he helps clients manage their resources today to achieve their goals for the future through financial, retirement, and estate planning. Andreas says it’s never too early or too late to analyze and begin a saving strategy. “No matter where you are in life, there are steps you can take to create a more secure future. Retirement planning can be a challenging process, requiring the guidance of a financial advisor and investment vehicles such as individual retirement arrangements (IRAs).

Andreas Global Asset Management Group was later changed to Global Asset Management Group. We help you understand how using various retirement options can help you plan for a more positive retirement. We can advise you when there are changes in the markets, tax legislation, or the economy, and can help you adjust accordingly. An advisor you trust and the financial plan you create together will guide you through financial ups and downs to stay on track toward your goals.” Global Asset Management Group sets themselves apart from other financial management businesses through their trademark, “The U.P. Process,” developed by Andreas. Through an initial no-obligation review, the plan provides clients an opportunity to envision what their portfolio might look like in an ever-fluctuating market and evaluate their risk tolerance prior to making a commitment. Their U.P. Process is a five-step process that guides clients along their life-long financial journey. Innovative Strategies include expert research, unbiased advice, personalized services, and comprehensive wealth management solutions. “We specialize in developing innovative strategies to help investors secure their financial goals while managing risk,” says Andreas.

Investment Discipline combines time-tested investment specialization, extensive industry knowledge, and active risk management to help clients navigate the global markets. Andreas says, “We strive to integrate market opportunities with balanced diversification for individual and institutional investors.” Purposeful Planning means clients have choices and flexibility to create quality investment portfolios that match their financial goals and risk tolerance. Through Active Implementation, Global Asset Management Group analyzes market, economic, and geopolitical data to actively implement their clients’ personal financial plans. ‘We never feel pressured to invest just because you hold cash,” adds Andreas. Continuous Monitoring and Rebalancing allows each element of a client’s investment strategy to be proactively

and continuously monitored. “The market changes, your life changes, and so should your strategies, always moving . . . FORWARD.” Born and raised in Southwest Louisiana, Andreas and his team are dedicated to their community. “To be a good steward over your own finances you need to give back to your community. We are invested and passionate about giving back to foundations such as the Local Heart Foundation, Family and Youth Counseling Center, and several others.” Global Asset Management Group supports imaginative visions and ideas in handling their client’s financial matters.

As per their motto, We take your life and your investments . . . FORWARD. Andreas says his business is about relationships. “People aren’t clients – they’re family. We are their financial partner through every stage of life and for life.”

You’re in Good Hands with Hight-Doland Allstate Craig Doland became owner/agent at HightDoland Insurance Agency LLC in 2017 when his uncle, Pat Hight, passed the insurance baton to his nephew. Hight started his Allstate insurance career under the escalator at the Sears in downtown Lake Charles in 1974. For over 40 years, he provided insurance services and policies to Southwest Louisiana residents. Doland, a Lake Charles native, graduated from Barbe High School and attended LSU. After college, he took jobs in California, Colorado, and Texas, but he always returned to Louisiana. “The people, the food and Laissez les bon temps rouler!” he says. Hight encouraged Doland to pursue a career in the insurance business, in hopes of having a successor for Hight Allstate and keep the agency in the family. Doland worked for an insurance agency in Baton Rouge for a couple years, returned to Lake Charles in 2012 and worked for Hight until he assumed the owner/agent mantle in 2017. Doland and his staff of five primarily offer insurance for homeowners, renters, auto, life, boat, ATV, business, and retirement. He says Allstate affords a unique business model that allows agents to accommodate customers who need more than

Allstate’s scope through partnerships with outside brokers. Hight-Doland Allstate is known for their friendly, exemplary customer service. They work with their customers to give them the best coverage for the best rate. “Our customers are the most important part of our business,” Doland says. “Without them we wouldn’t be here. I treat everyone I speak with like a mother, brother, uncle . . . I even say, ‘Mrs. Guillory, if you were my grandma I’d be telling her the exact same thing.’” Doland loves living in his hometown of Lake Charles. “I couldn’t be happier to be here. We have a great community, city, and location proximity to so many things; wildlife, the Gulf, New Orleans, Houston.” He praises his Uncle Pat as a perfect example of how to be a great agent for his clients and says Hight continues to be a valuable resource and mentor. “He still has an office at the agency, and he comes in daily, cracking jokes, harassing the staff, even meeting with customers.” Find peace of mind with an insurance agent you can trust. Imperial Health More Than A Doctor, We’re Your Healthcare Team.

Imperial Health’s vital role in meeting the healthcare needs of the Southwest Louisiana community go back to 1957 when the doors of what was originally called Lake Charles Medical and Surgical Clinic, or simply, “The Clinic,” first opened.

Events of 2020 have presented challenges that were not foreseen at the beginning of this year. We anticipated a second wave of industrial projects to begin and to continue to lead the state in job creation. Then came the COVID-19 outbreak and in mid-March, the government ordered closure of non-essential businesses, cancelled schools, and stay-at-home orders. The economy of the nation ground to almost a halt. Despite devastating small businesses, and restaurants in particular, our area’s industries continued to operate along with grocery and large retail outlets. Then came the drop in oil prices upon which our state relies for jobs and revenue. The combination of the coronavirus effects with large numbers of cases and deaths and the oil crisis has caused most of the expected LNG projects to be delayed. Recovery task forces were appointed by the governor and another by the Senate president and House speaker to make policy recommendations for re-starting the state’s economy. Many pieces of legislation were drafted and presented at the shortened regular legislative session and at the special legislative session. Conflict between the governor and most of the Legislature has yet to be resolved. The governor has vetoed some legislation and it remains to be seen if the legislature has the votes to override the vetoes.

Then on May 25, the very unfortunate death of George Floyd in Minneapolis resulted in hundreds of protests in cities around our nation and the world to protest heavy-handed police tactics. Now, we have a third crisis to deal with. The U.S. Chamber and over 400 Chambers around the nation including the Chamber SWLA, have signed on to a national initiative to address inequality of opportunity. The U.S. Chamber conducted a national virtual town hall June 25. Details of the meeting will be released soon. After this national event, with the planning of the Chamber SWLA’s Business Development and Inclusion Task Force, we will conduct regional town hall meetings (see sidebar for dates and times) to discuss inequality through education, employment, entrepreneurship, and criminal justice reform.

The world is going through unprecedented times, as are our responses and reactions to it. At least the Southwest region has the hurricane model to fall back on. Most of us have experienced the dread, hard-work, and perseverance that comes from a hurricane hit. This pandemic is akin to a long hurricane slowly slogging through our communities. At the time of this writing, our local unemployment rate is 13% and will most likely grow larger as the effects of mass unemployment hit. If you don’t have a job, you are not going to spend as much at the grocery; you are not going to splurge at the store; you will do more with less; and more for yourself than you would have done before. This will lead to the next round of layoff of service workers like landscapers, maid services, day care workers, and waitstaff.

This grim forecast can be staved off through applying for financial parachutes for your business. There are a few out there to explore: The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) through the Small Business Administration – In Louisiana, more than 73,800 loans have been approved totaling more than $7.3 billion. Across the state, it is estimated that the PPP has helped support 800,000 jobs. This loan program provides loan forgiveness by temporarily expanding the traditional SBA 7(a) loan program. The PPP was recently extended to August 8. To learn more about the PPP, visit the SBA.gov and explore their small business loan resources. EIDL Loan Advance through the Small Business Administration – This loan provides up to $10,000 of economic relief to businesses that are currently experiencing temporary difficulties. Louisiana Main Street Recovery Program through the Louisiana Treasury – The program will provide grants of up to $15,000 for eligible small businesses (50 or fewer employees). BUILDING ON EXCELLENCE Expertise, ethics, innovation, and patientfocused care provide the foundation that has stimulated the tremendous growth the Center for Orthopaedics (CFO) has experienced over the past decade. Initially founded in Lake Charles in 1994, the group moved to their new office on Imperial Blvd. in Lake Charles in 2009, and that marked a new beginning for CFO, according to orthopaedic surgeon Dr. John Noble. This new office opened with just four doctors, but the group increased in number rapidly. Today, CFO is the region’s largest musculoskeletal group, serving all Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas, including two locations and 15 doctors in various specialties, along with three podiatric surgery residents. There is also a large support staff of clinicians, technicians, and office personnel. An essential factor in CFO’s growth is the doctors’ strong connection to this community. Most of the doctors are from this region, and those who are not have practiced here for their entire career. As a group, they are committed not just to the Center for Orthopaedics, but also Southwest Louisiana. Part of the commitment means bringing the latest advances in care to their patients, from surgical technology like the MAKO roboticassisted system for more precise hip and knee replacement procedures, regenerative

medicine to regrow damaged cells, and advanced podiatric wound healing technology. CFO’s sports medicine department’s staff of experienced athletic trainers work with the doctors to provide sports medicine coverage for 14 area high schools, working to prevent and treat injuries in young athletes. This year, board-certified rheumatologist Enrique Mendez, MD, joined CFO, expanding the range of care the group offers. He treats those with rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematous, and a wide range of other rheumatologic disorders. In September, Michael “Mickey” Garitty, a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon raised in Baton Rouge, will join CFO, bringing additional sports medicine and joint reconstruction expertise to the group. Growth at CFO is keeping pace with the rapid growth in the region, and the new development taking place on the Imperial Pointe campus around their Lake Charles office will only enhance this, adds Dr. Noble. “This promises to be different from anything else going on in the region -- a healthy living community that merges health and wellness facilities with retail space and various residential components. We are very proud to be part of such a progressive project that makes the future of healthcare and healthier living a reality today.”

“Local shops, service industries, retail, hotels and restaurants that benefit from tourism experienced an unforeseen downturn that has altered business projections that were previously in store for 2020. It is a natural fit to partner with Visit Lake Charles to encourage residents to shop local, and we are proud to be able to bring awareness to attractions and offerings prevalent throughout the Lake Area,” said Mayor Nic Hunter of the City of Lake Charles. This spring, residents across the country reevaluated travel plans. Of those traveling, 25% changed their plans from a destination that required flying to one that is closer to home. The City of Lake Charles partnered with Visit Lake Charles to encourage the idea of vacationing closer to home, which appealed to 34% of those surveyed, to bolster local businesses and inspire residents to rediscover attractions, the great outdoors, restaurants, local retail outlets and hidden gems. The online campaign targets the five-parish region and showcases the appeal of Southwest Louisiana and the myriad of adventures to be had this summer. Itinerary ideas, restaurants, resorts and attractions are outlined on the “rediscover” section of the Visit Lake Charles website to jumpstart ideas for residents to begin planning staycations.

“The powerful ripple-effect of the pandemic has been widespread and difficult to overcome for the travel and tourism industry. Many of our events, conventions and groups had to either be canceled or postponed, and our industry partners have felt the loss across the board. We are fortunate to collaborate with Mayor Hunter and the City of Lake Charles to launch the stay local campaign not only to boost the regional economy by supporting our businesses but also to strengthen morale through the spirit of rediscovering Southwest Louisiana as we move forward through the summer months with resilience,” said Edmiston.

A NOTE FROM SALON OWNER -Shereé McNease

“WE STRIVE TO TURN SIMPLE CUTS INTO HAIR ARTISTRY AND SKIN CARE ROUTINES INTO TRULY REJUVENATING EXPERIENCES. WE WANT EACH OF OUR CLIENTS TO LEAVE FEELING HAPPY, CONFIDENT, AND BEAUTIFUL, BECAUSE THAT IS THE ULTIMATE TOTAL LOOK...” At The Total Look we strive to be a professional warm and welcoming salon. Our story is unique, it is one of grateful transformation, good old fashion work ethic, attention to detail, and giving the love and attention that each client deserves. Our journey has been shaped by all of our unique talents and specialties, along with a diverse clientele ranging from the very young to the young at heart. We aim to please every client with an approach of kindness and welcoming conversation, listening to your every need.

The Total Look has cultivated an environment rich with education and opportunities for our team to thrive. This environment has led the salon to be dedicated to providing exceptional service for all of its clients. We offer a variety of haircuts for men, women and children, all your color and highlight needs, full body waxing, lash bar and tinting, hair extensions, perms, Jane Iredale mineral and air brush make-up, special occasion styles for your special events, and on-site hair and makeup. We also offer full service skin care and facials, oncology safe facials, peels, dermaplaning, and customized facials for men and women.

At the young age of 23, a vision of becoming a salon owner began as a dream of thoughts and ideas. I had been surrounded by many of my loved ones in the art of creativity in many aspects of the art and beauty industry. I knew as a young girl that I would work in a salon one day. I started in my bathroom at home practicing on my sisters, cousins, and whoever else wanted to get in line! I had the opportunity to work in a barber shop in Lafayette, Louisiana before moving to Lake Charles. I was working alongside some very talented, creative businessmen & women who inspired me and molded me to become the business owner and stylist that I am today. I soon realized that God had given me the tools necessary to move on and grow myself and continue to serve my clients doing what I love to do. I quickly put into action all of the pieces and it all came together. At 24 years old I became a salon owner on June 15, 1993! I leased a building and staffed 5 stylists and 1 nail technician. From our opening day, we quickly became family, an environment I always envisioned. We stayed at that location for 6 years, and in 1999 we moved into a newly built salon that I designed from the ground up. I had the amazing opportunity to be the very first salon in Lake Charles that was designed in every detail to fit everything we needed to function as a top-notch salon in the Lake Area. Our vision was to be a salon that caters to all the needs of one’s well-being. I have been extremely blessed throughout all of the ever-changing beauty world that my Salon has been staffed with amazing stylists. Moving into the next big shift, we continue to grow, catering to the needs of our clients. We now offer full body waxing, lash lift and brow tint, customized skin care, and hair and makeup in the salon or on location for special events. These last 27 years have passed very quickly, and we are extremely grateful for the many years of love and support from our family and friends. We look forward to continuing to serve you for many more years to come.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all of your continued love and support. AESTHETICS BY TAMARA 33 7. 4 79 . 2 777 PURE 1910 SOUTHWOOD DRIVE

SWLA Economic Development Alliance

Shifts Perception of Workforce Development Before our current historic unemployment levels in Southwest Louisiana, The SWLA Economic Development Alliance was already pushing for a shift in perception of what life looks like after high school. The modern American Dream is that everyone gets a great college education and moves into the workforce towards a better life for them and their children. However, the workforce make-up of the United States since World War II has been fairly stable at 20% requiring four-year degrees or above, and 70% requiring additional education and training past a high school education. Only 10% or less of the workforce needs only a high school diploma or less. For the past decade, industry has called for a shift towards more opportunities for career and technical education in and after high school. This often offers future workers a quicker and more specialized path from education to employment.

Our shift from stay-at-home orders to Phase 2 and eventually Phase 3 spotlights the vulnerable jobs in our region. The hospitality industry has long been a mainstay of our economy, but its workforce is usually more fluid and volatile than the steady reliable fields of petrochemical and healthcare. Maybe now is the time for some of the workers who are currently hanging on through unemployment to explore the long-term solution of highly sought careers available after some additional training. The 21st century workforce requires that each worker not only has skills and experience, but also is a lifelong learner to adapt to new careers and technologies as they emerge. Now in its 2nd edition, the Southwest Louisiana Workforce Resource Guide is a road map for job seekers to get from point A to point B on their workforce preparation journey. It includes information to help individuals choose a career, gain the training and certifications required, prepare a resume, acquire basic life skills and ultimately, land a job. Southwest Louisiana residents who want to work and succeed in today’s workforce should consider getting the required training and credentials now.
