Never has there been a year when Thrive Magazine has been more excited to share the stories of Southwest Louisiana businesses and celebrate their victories won through grit, determination, and resilience. As a regional business, Thrive understands the challenges this past year has forced local businesspersons to overcome – from a global pandemic to four federally-declared natural disasters in a nine-month span. In this 2021 issue of Homegrown, Thrive spotlights locally-owned businesses, whether they are back to business as usual, or still striving to rebuild and fully reopen. We applaud them and their efforts to come back even stronger. We thank them for their dedication to our community; and we thank our community for their support of local businesses.

Andreas Global COMING SOON!
(337) 419-1855 • 1919B Southwood Drive, Lake Charles, LA 70605
GLOBAL ASSET MANAGEMENT GROUP Perseveres through the Storms Tim Andreas and his team at Global Asset Management Group
have been providing financial advice to regional and international clients for 21 years. When the many storms of 2020/2021 challenged both their business and personal lives, Andreas and his team demonstrated the determined resilience that has come to define the Southwest Louisiana community. First, the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted the financial markets, threatening clients’ portfolios. But GAMG plans ahead for disruptions, makes provisions to manage risk, and protects their clients’ resources. “Our clients trust us,” says Andreas. “We have the ability to make portfolio changes and manage unusual circumstances in the market that benefits everyone.” In August 2020, Hurricane Laura decimated the GAMG office in the hardhit Capital One Building. Fortunately, the 8
homes of the GAMG team suffered only minor damage; but initially, they were all displaced, however through their commitment and dedication they worked from Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. From there, they set up operations in Andreas’ living and dining rooms. In September 2020, after a team-building trip to Conroe, Tx., they found a temporary workplace. In early February 2021, heartbreak struck again when Don Clements, one of their trusted advisors, was tragically killed in a plane crash. “It is still so hard to believe,” Andreas says. “We still expect him to walk into the office with his boisterous voice and unique, comical personality. We still laugh and cry when memories are brought up.” Through all these overwhelming circumstances, GAMG has persevered. Andreas says their clients are a primary motivation for their courage. “Our clients are like family, and it is a joy for us to work with such wonderful people. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today. We’ve had clients from across the country and Thrive
around the world who check in with us and ask how Southwest Louisiana is doing; how we’re rebuilding and coming back. They still have us in their thoughts and prayers.” Tim was recently awarded a spot on the FORBES 2021 Best-In-State Wealth Advisors list which spotlights over 5,000 advisors across America. He ranked number 15 in the state of Louisiana for 2021. “I am honored to be named among the thousands of advisors,” Tim said, “but particularly humbled to be listed in Louisiana’s top 15 and the only advisor recognized in Lake Charles.” Andreas has appeared on the FORBES Best-In-State Wealth Advisors list for four consecutive years, ranking in the top 20 in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021. Andreas offers this advice to other entrepreneurs: “There are always opportunities to look within and change for the better. Use challenging situations in life to recreate yourself as an individual, and as a business person. We are more likely to form new habits when we clear away the obstacles that stand in our way. 2021 - Annual Issue
“We know many of our neighbors continue to struggle, putting homes back together after the storms. The resiliency of SWLA and the people who call this place home will continue to work towards a brighter future because we care for one another, focus on one another’s needs, and celebrate each other. We want to seize this moment and be a part of something new in this community. And we will continue to take your life and your investments
… FORWARD.“ Restructure your business model, get rid of existing, bad habits and create new, positive ones. Good habits happen when we set ourselves up for success. Imagine the person you want to be and strive to become that person. As tragic as this past year has been, we know the next chapter will bring new achievements and greater accomplishments. We will find our new corporate headquarters and continue to grow stronger and better. We plan to build a facility that gives back to the community – a landmark that makes Lake Charles proud and serves as a reminder of the confidence we have in this city.” In addition to his hopes and plans for GAMG, Tim Andreas is optimistic about the future of SWLA. And we will continue to take your life and your investments

firms). Overall, approximately 32,725 advisors were considered, and 5,000 (approximately 15.3 percent of candidates) were recognized. The full methodology2 that Forbes developed in partnership with SHOOK Research is available at www.forbes.com. This recognition and the due–diligence process conducted are not indicative of the advisor’s future performance. Your experience may vary. Winners are organized and ranked by state. Healthy Image: Thriving for 19 Years Nineteen years ago, Kristy Armand and Christine Fisher were cheering together in a hospital parking lot. They had just landed their first client, and they weren’t sure what to do next. There was no business plan or start-up money – they barely had a name. What they did have was a shared vision, experience and a reputation for doing good, thorough work. That’s how Healthy Image began, and it’s been steady growth ever since. In 2007 they were joined by a third partner, graphic designer Barbara VanGossen. The three had worked together for years on various projects in their previous positions and were already a tightknit team. Healthy Image moved over the years from in-home offices, to a first small office, then to a larger office and expanding that space. In 2017, the agency built a new, permanent office building in Lake Charles. Today they serve over 120 local, regional and national clients. The 12 team members offer a full range of marketing services, including strategic planning, advertising, public relations, graphic design, corporate communication, video production, photography, social media
management, website development, event planning and more – basically anything a client needs that falls under the marketing or imagemanagement umbrella. As communicators, not just advertisers, the team works to tell each client’s story to the people who need to hear it, and there are many different ways to do that, especially with the growth in online media options. In January of 2020, Healthy Image reached another milestone with the addition of a fourth partner, longtime employee Shonda Manuel, who is a graphic designer and photographer. Nearly two years after starting Healthy Image in 2002, Armand and Fisher founded Thrive magazine as a small quarterly publication focused on topics for better living. With VanGossen’s help, it matured to a full-color, high-quality, award-winning monthly magazine distributed throughout Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas. Healthy Image has been recognized on the local, regional and national level for business growth and achievement, and while the recognition and awards are appreciated – and humbling – what matters
most to the owners and their team is knowing they are helping their clients achieve their goals. They love what they do and feel their success comes from helping others be successful.

CHAMBER
SWLA
Economic Development Alliance
THE BENEFITS OF WORKING TOGETHER by Amanda White
Running a business means being informed and active in its every aspect. Each business must have a working knowledge of taxes, the legalities related to its purpose, and HR regulations and payroll – even if you are a one-person business. It’s a lot. This is the main reason that Chambers of Commerce started to pop up all over the world. Pioneered in France in 1599, Chambers represented the common interests of their members. Today, the means and methods have changed, but not the needs met and overall purpose of a Chamber. One business owner cannot stop in the middle of their day to meet with people interested in starting a business in their town. They cannot mentor upcoming entrepreneurs, and they don’t have time to meet with local, state and federal legislators to advocate for pro-business legislation. It requires a collective effort. The Chamber SWLA and its umbrella organization – the Southwest Louisiana Economic Development Alliance, serve the business community of our five-parish region and the area’s main economic development and business promotion organizations. 14
ADVOCACY As the “Voice for Business” in the region, The Chamber SWLA is one of largest advocates for Southwest Louisiana in Baton Rouge and Washington, D.C. The Picard Group has served as our public policy experts and consultants over the past years under the guidance of their Senior Director of State Affairs, Mike Michot. He is no stranger to the leaders of Southwest Louisiana. Michot served as State Senator and Representative over his 16-year legislative career and continues to easily navigate the corridors of the State Capitol championing Southwest Louisiana interests. Our legislative agenda is laid out prior to each year’s session and shared with all legislators. How votes went during the session is showcased at the Chamber’s Annual LegisGator Luncheon where an overview of the highs and lows of the session is given, U.S. and State legislators provide updates, and honors are awarded to politicians whose actions and voting records best helped Southwest Louisiana that year. Our upcoming LegisGator Luncheon will be held at L’Auberge Casino Resort on August 20, 2021. It is sold out at this time. Thrive

INFORMATION Gathering information from many different resources as well as in-house sources, the Alliance curates Southwest Louisiana business news and distributes it bi-weekly (Tuesday and Friday) to our members and other regional leaders. (You can sign up for the newsletter via our website at www.allianceswla.org.) A combination of information from governmental agencies and breaking business news and announcements, the e-newsletter does its best to provide up-to-date information and encourages members to share their insights, milestones, and events with fellow members. Our business community is stronger together and benefits when local businesses support each other. The e-newsletter also informs members about Alliance events and programs. Currently, the Alliance is hosting a series of nationally recognized 21st Century Business Forums (brought to the region through the support of B1 Bank and Suddenlink Business). The Alliance also offers programs like entrepreneurial training and Peer to Peer Roundtables for business owners through our regional business incubator.
THE POWER IS YOURS BEAUREGARD ELECTRIC CO-OP HAS
43,000 LOCAL OWNERS As an electric cooperative, Beauregard Electric serves some 43,000 member-owners. As one of our region’s oldest homegrown businesses, BECi has been powering Southwest Louisiana homes and businesses for more than 80 years.
BUSINESS TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES Like the aforementioned 21st Century Business Forum, recent Google-led programs and webinars hosted by the Alliance provide the business community the continuing education it needs to stay current on policy changes and business trends. In 2022, the Chamber and Alliance are putting together an impressive list of educational opportunities along with programs hosted by partner entities like McNeese State University’s Small Business Development Center and the Imperial Calcasieu Society for Human Resource Management. After a year of workshops and seminars being caught in limbo or moving online, the Alliance will be back in full-force, live and in-person as soon as it is safe to do so.
NEED MORE INCENTIVE? Your level of involvement in the Chamber and the Alliance is a personal and individual decision. Investment in the Chamber SWLA can be as basic as having information sent directly to your in-box and its legislative efforts for the business community on your behalf. Simply having the Chamber SWLA sticker in your front window increases your favorability and creditability rating among your clients by up to 44%, according to a research study by The Schapiro Group for Market Street. The lagniappe of membership comes from attending events and meeting new people. Networking may seem old school, but it still works; especially here in the South. Many members have forged business deals, met future clients, and nabbed that next great employee at a Chamber SWLA event. Options for networking are available for all types from the regular Business After Events (starting again in September), committees like Environmental Affairs, Technology and Small Business, and events like our Annual Golf Tournament (October 29 at Gray Plantation).

REAL ESTATE
is a Flavin Family Tradition At Flavin
, we are all about family. And that is exactly how we started. What began as a small family business in 1976 has grown into one of the most trusted and successful real estate firms in Louisiana. A longstanding Louisiana tradition rooted in family and client satisfaction, Flavin Realty is firmly committed to professional service and deep industry expertise, a commitment demonstrated in the selection of our associates. But our team did not start out as large as it is today. It began with Bill Flavin and Ed Blankenship – two friends who saw an opportunity to utilize their talents in sales and construction to benefit those in the Lake Charles area.
THE EARLY DAYS Bill Flavin, a dual Irish and American citizen, moved to Lake Charles in 1972 with his wife, Marilyn, and their eight children. A Midwest native, Bill found his way to Southwest Louisiana because of his job with a chemical company. A few years later, the company wanted to transfer him again, this time to Buffalo, New York. But by then, Lake Charles was home. In 1976, Bill left his job with the chemical company and, in partnership with friend and homebuilder Ed Blankenship, launched what was then known as Blankenship Realty.

THE FLAVIN FAMILY TRADITION
NEW SERVICES AND GROWING THE FAMILY
Initially, Ed and Bill decided to use the Blankenship name because it was more well-known. But they always planned for Bill to take over. Two years in, he bought the company, and Flavin Realty was born. In 1980, Flavin Realty welcomed its second generation when Bill’s son, Dan Flavin, joined the business. In 1990, Dan took his turn in ownership and purchased the company from his father. In 1995, his brother Tim, who had successfully worked in construction, joined in a leadership role. Together, the brothers expanded Flavin Realty until it was the No. 1 brokerage in Southwest Louisiana. In 2018, Flavin entered its third generation of family ownership. Before joining Flavin Realty, Dan’s son Beau was an insurance agent who also invested in real estate. With his success in the market, Beau’s family recognized him as an experienced, upcoming leader for the Flavin company. And the timing was serendipitous. Dan and Tim were ready to step back, and although many national franchises expressed interest in Flavin, they reached out to Beau. He purchased the company in 2018 with the mission of growth and diversifying the company’s business lines to better offer clients a comprehensive list of home services.
After adding property management and landscape services, Flavin began eyeing a geographic expansion. In 2020, they expanded the business’ reach to Baton Rouge. By the end of the first year, Flavin had a dozen agents working in the capital city. Each generation of the Flavin family has brought its own depth of knowledge and expertise to the business that ultimately made Flavin Realty what it is today. With family at the forefront of everything they do, the team ensures that each client feels as if they are a part of the Flavin family and is satisfied with their real estate services. And that, along with their extensive knowledge in the industry, is what has made Flavin Realty one of the top real estate companies in the state of Louisiana.

SWLA JOBS & ECONOMY on the rebound
by Daniel Groft, PhD.
Hurricanes Laura and Delta made landfall almost one year ago. These storms caused unprecedented devastation in our region amid the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic causing unparalleled worldwide economic damage. The Lake Charles area experienced a large drop in economic activity as illustrated in the graph of employment. The storms caused billions of dollars in damage to housing, automobiles, businesses, and agriculture, and led to the relocation of many citizens. In just one month, the area lost over 8,500 jobs and the unemployment rate in the area shot up to 12.6% (the highest level since Rita).
22
We are fortunate that employment in the region is finally slightly above pre-storm levels and the unemployment rate has come down. This jobs recovery has been slow and steady. The area has also seen recovery in important economic variables such as gaming revenues, exports, and taxable sales. Nonetheless, there is a great deal of work left to be done. Many structures are still awaiting repair and numerous citizens remain displaced. Southwest Louisiana is still, along with the rest of the nation, some distance away from prepandemic levels of economic activity. The economic rebound has hit obstacles along the way. The area experienced an ice storm in February and a flood in May. The floods, severe storms, and tornadoes were declared a federal disaster on June 2, 2021 affecting not only Calcasieu but Lafayette and parishes in the Baton Rouge area. FEMA has approved over $9 million in individual assistance from almost 2,000 applications so far. Estimates from a report commissioned by Louisiana Economic Development bring to light more of the economic effects of this event. The overall economic damages to the entire state were estimated to be almost $319 million. As the rains dropped more than 12 inches of water in Calcasieu, the flooding caused interruptions in over 2,000 parish businesses affecting almost 25,800 employees.
Thrive
This caused a drop of almost $21 million in the parish’s gross domestic product. It was also estimated that 1,300 residential housing structures experienced damages amounting to almost $50 million. There were also severe damages to automobiles, commercial building structures, and agriculture. Southwest Louisiana has gone through unprecedented trials. While much of the coverage has justifiably been focused on pandemic and storm recovery, it must be remembered there was great damage caused to our region and state from these other events. In July, 2020, mayor of Lake Charles, Nic Hunter, was in Washington, D.C. requesting billions in Federal Supplemental Relief. This supplemental disaster relief has been called for from all in the state since the storms. The disasters we’ve experienced have caused billions of dollars in damage to all facets of the economy as well as widespread hardship in our lives. After all the challenges Southwest Louisiana has faced, the benefits of receiving this aid would be crucial in rebuilding back faster and better for the long-term. Dan Groft is Associate Professor of Economics at McNeese State University, the Director of the Drew Center for Business and Economic Analysis (mcneesedrewecon.org), and an economist with the SWLA Alliance.

James’ father, James E. “Bo” Sudduth, II, used the family name for property management and development. After graduating from law school at Louisiana State University, James Sudduth, III aspired to return to his Southwest Louisiana roots and establish a path of his own through Sudduth and Associates, LLC. Since opening Sudduth and Associates, LLC in 2015, Sudduth and Associates has staffed itself with attorneys and staff that collectively bring 100 years of legal experience to the residents of Louisiana and Texas. They specialize in a wide variety of law concentrations, but they focus primarily on Criminal Defense, Labor and Employment Law, Family and Domestic Law, Personal Injury, Civil Litigation and Worker’s Compensation. Following the devastation from Hurricanes Laura and Delta, and in an effort to help and protect the rights of the residents of Southwest Louisiana, Sudduth and Associates expanded its practice areas to include Hurricane Insurance Claims. Since this expansion, Sudduth and Associates has been able to successfully obtain payouts for its clients in order to assist them in their rebuilding efforts. Sudduth and Associates takes pride in its foundation and roots in Southwest Louisiana and looks forward to rebuilding together! Sudduth and Associates is located at 1109 Pithon St, Lake Charles, LA 70601. Call 337-480-0101 or see their website, www.saa.legal for more information.

SWLA RESILIENT
by George Swift
It’s no secret that the effects of Hurricanes Laura and Delta linger. You can see the impact as you ride throughout our region. There are literally thousands of homes and businesses still awaiting repairs. Settlements with insurance companies, lack of contractors, and back orders for building materials, windows, air conditioners, appliances, and furniture are keeping our area in recovery mode. While Louisiana and in particular, our five-parish region, await a federal disaster appropriation, rebuilding continues at less than a desired pace. However, the industrial outlook continues to provide hope for our region’s recovery.
Now, almost eleven months after Hurricane Laura devastated our area, the usual federal funding response has not taken place. Census figures are to be released in September, but an accurate picture of how many residents have left the area may not be known. A good barometer of population loss will be school enrollment. With over 8500 persons unemployed and over 11,500 positions open in our five parishes, there are jobs available for everyone. Wages have gone up as well as prices on goods and services. The state discontinued the $300 weekly unemployment enhancement at the end of July 2021 which should encourage folks to return to the workforce. Training programs are available, some with scholarships at SOWELA , McNeese, and
28
ABC School. The new M.J. Foster Promise Program passed by the legislature will, starting next year, provide scholarships for adults over 21 wishing to retrain at our technical community colleges. Many residents are hindered by the lack of affordable housing. Long term recovery plans from the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury will be revealed soon and implementation of that plan is absolutely necessary for our region to make a full recovery. The Chamber SWLA continues to push our Louisiana Congressional Delegation to find a way to pass the $3 billion Disaster Relief Appropriation as requested by Governor Edwards and supported by our local officials. These funds are essential for housing and strengthening our infrastructure for the future.

Recently, some major projects are taking shape which give credibility to the belief that despite massive hurricane damage, our region is on the rebound. In Beauregard Parish, one of the first major industrial announcements in over forty years was made. Canfor Corporation will build a $160 million state-of-the-art lumber mill at the Louisiana Economic Development Certified Site at the Beauregard Regional Airport in DeRidder. This facility will create 130 jobs and 385 indirect jobs. This is the first project for the airport which should lead to more industrial expansion on the 1,100 acre mega-site. Another Canadian company, Interfor, has announced plans to re-open the shuttered Georgia Pacific Lumber Mill in DeQuincy which will bring jobs to that area.

Chennault Industrial Airpark had the groundbreaking for a new air cargo facility which Chennault officials believe will open the door to diversification. Tellurian exercised its long-term lease option with the Port of Lake Charles. The company is taking the necessary steps to prepare for the Driftwood LNG construction which will result in over 6,500 construction jobs and about 400 operational jobs. Other LNG projects are moving toward final investment decision. Governor John Bel Edwards was recently in Westlake for the groundbreaking of a new $170 million plant for BioLab, which had burned after Hurricane Laura. BioLab manufactures chlorine tablets and was such a major player in the industry that its destruction contributed to a shortage of chlorine tablets for pools nationwide. BioLab will retain 30 jobs, add over 70 new jobs and create over 230 indirect jobs when the plant is complete in spring of 2022. Governor Edwards also attended the groundbreaking of Port Wonder, a collaborative public-private effort shepherded by Mayor Nic Hunter. This $20 million showplace will house
Russell Castille
the Children’s Museum and a science and nature center to be operated by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. This project should be a catalyst for further lakefront development, according to Mayor Hunter, who began his second term July 1. Adjacent to Port Wonder will be a restaurant overlooking the lake and operated by Crying Eagle Brewing Company. With over 90,000 vehicles passing daily along I-10, this development should entice folks to stop and increase our area’s tourism. The Isle of Capri construction is underway with the new land-based casino scheduled to be opened by this time next year. The Lake Area Industry Alliance expects over 3,000 additional construction jobs will begin in October as existing industries conduct heavy maintenance, which was delayed by COVID-19. While recovery continues as residents and businesses deal with rebuilding issues, our region is exhibiting strong resilience. At the Alliance, we are currently working with several industrial prospects and potential commercial and residential developers so the interest in our area is high.
Opportunity is here despite the hardships we are enduring. Southwest Louisiana is our home and we want our children and grandchildren to stay here. This region is valuable to our nation with agriculture, timber, chemical products and energy production. We cannot afford to let the partisan bickering in our nation’s capital keep us from recovering. We not only want to recover, we want to build back stronger and better than before. Future generations depend on it. George Swift is the President/CEO of SWLA Economic Development Alliance

INCUBATOR SUCCESS STORY
GRADUATE Earline Marchand, E DPNA After working for the Social Security Administration for over thirtynine years, Earline Marchand was contacted by a local attorney who needed assistance with her Social Security case load. After a year, the attorney passed away, but Marchand decided to stay on working the cases to closure.
36
One day in 2013, while watching the evening news, Marchand saw information on the upcoming SEED Center Incubator Program being offered by the Southwest Louisiana Alliance at the newly built SEED Center. They were recruiting individuals interested in starting their own businesses, and she had already been working with the Small Business Development Center at McNeese on setting up her own business: drafting a business plan, paying the appropriate State of Louisiana fees for small business owners, and naming her business. “After completing the application for the Incubator program, and being interviewed by the SWLA Alliance group, I was notified that I had been accepted as an Incubator client,” said Marchand. “I was overjoyed and thankful that my dream of owning my own business and doing the type of work I had done my entire career was about to come true. I immediately selected my office in the beautiful SEED center, named my business Marchand Disability Consulting, LLC and got busy helping people in need of my services.” As one of the first Incubator clients at the SEED Center, Marchand received the additional training needed to keep and run a successful small business. “The Incubator Director, Mr. Adrian Wallace, made sure that we received training in taxes and deciding what type of business we’d have for tax purposes.

Expert Musculoskeletal Care is A Group Effort at Center for Orthopaedics Expertise, ethics, innovation, teamwork and patient-focused care provide the foundation for the tremendous growth the Center for Orthopaedics (CFO) has experienced. Initially founded in Lake Charles in 1994, the group moved to their new office on Imperial Blvd. in Lake Charles in 2009, and that marked a new beginning for CFO. This new office opened with just four doctors, but the group increased in number rapidly. Today, CFO is the region’s largest musculoskeletal group, serving all Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas, including two locations and 16 doctors in various specialties, along with three podiatric surgery residents and a large support staff of clinicians, technicians, and office personnel. A new office in Moss Bluff will open later this year. An essential factor in CFO’s growth is the doctors’ strong connection to this community. Most of the doctors are from this region, and those who are not have practiced here for most of their careers. As a group, they are committed not just to the Center for Orthopaedics, but also Southwest Louisiana. Part of this commitment means bringing the latest advances in care to their patients, from surgical technology like the MAKO robotic assisted system for more precise hip and knee replacement procedures, new innovations to manage pain without narcotics, and advanced podiatric wound healing technology. The wide range of specialists within one office allows patients to receive collaborative care when needed, all within one office. This is not only more 38
convenient for the patients but also optimizes the level of care they receive. Other specialized services enhance the level of excellent patient care and convenience. Bone Health Central provides osteoporosis prevention, diagnosis and management. An in-house durable medical supplies store offers a one-stop shop for braces, orthotic inserts and much more. OrthoExpress ensures appointments with a CFO specialist with 24 hours for musculoskeletal injuries. The CFO sports medicine department’s staff of experienced athletic trainers work under the direction of the doctors to provide sports medicine coverage for 16 area high schools, with the goal of preventing and treating injuries in young athletes. Growth at CFO was the impetus for a new development taking place on the Imperial Pointe campus around their Lake Charles office. Imperial Pointe is designed to be a healthy living community that merges health and wellness facilities with retail space and various residential components. Construction on The Villages of Imperial Pointe began earlier this year.
This independent living facility will be the first of its kind in the region. Age-restricted to those 62 and older, it will offer enhanced apartment living with a variety of amenities for residents to enjoy. Thrive

LAKE STREET LIQUOR Continues its Storied Legacy The legacy of Lake St. Liquor dates back to the early 1960s, when Curry Rozas established the business. Well-known Lake Charles attorney Scotty Rozas worked for his father as a stock boy while attending McNeese State University prior to law school. Curry sold Lake St. Liquor (LSL) to Ed LeLeaux in the mid-60s, who sold the business to his niece, Sue Vera, in 1977 when she was only 20 years old. During those early years, the popular shop was located at 4460 Lake St. – currently Walgreens. Vera purchased the property at 4336 Lake St. (then a flower and seed shop) from James and Mona Pellerin and held her grand opening in January, 1980. She and her husband, Peter, owned and operated LSL for 39 years.

The Veras sold LSL to Shayne and Stephen Laughlin in 2016. Shayne says the Veras wanted to sell LSL to people “who would love and appreciate the little store as much as they did.” In the fall of 2018, the Laughlins asked Ashley Rozas daughterin-law of Scotty Rozas – if she would manage the store. “I thought they were out of their minds,” says Ashley. “This wasn’t something I saw myself ever doing! Slow to commit, I began my journey there in February 2019. Unexpectedly, I absolutely fell in love with the business.” Ashley says the Laughlins offered to sell her the business up front, but Ashley was hesitant. “I needed some time to really decide if this is what I wanted to do. After learning the business and building strong relationships with my customers, reps, and even my

truck drivers, I began to see it in a different light. LSL became my baby. I was hired to run it like I owned it and that’s exactly what I did.” Fast forward to August 2020. Ashley was heartbroken to lock the doors and leave LSL to the ravages of Hurricane Laura. “When I finally came back and saw the damage, I stood in the middle of the store and cried. Watching it sit for months and wait for contractors to rebuild, I felt an overwhelming hunger and determination to come back stronger and better. We were able to start over with the building – a fresh canvas. The Laughlins allowed me to share my vision and recreate our happy place together.” After watching her dream unfold over several months, Ashley decided to take on ownership. “Incredibly, the business has come full circle back to the Rozas family,” she says. Shayne adds, “Our decision to sell LSL to Ashley, although an easy one, is bittersweet. We have put our hearts into the rebuild and we are so excited for the store’s future.” Ashley expects to re-open LSL by September 2021.

Mayor Hunter says everything changed with Port Wonder because it became the catalyst for attracting Crying Eagle Brewery to commit to a new location downtown. He was able to leverage the fully funded project (the BP oil settlement paid a large portion of the $20 million tab) to create a synergy for local investors and lessen their risk by building right next door to a large attraction. He says, “I believe we’ll look to this moment years from now as the starting point for a string of activity and new business along the lakefront. Port Wonder is a home run, but the addition of Crying Eagle made it a grand slam, because a family friendly restaurant is an absolute necessity along the lakefront for tourism and quality of life for locals.”

PORT WONDER
You’ll hear Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter use the word ‘synergy’ quite a bit in speaking about lakefront development. He innately understood that no one wanted to be first to commit millions to a barren piece of waterfront property and he would have to find the right mix of established and new offerings to make it work. That’s why the June 2021 groundbreaking for the fully funded Port Wonder project signified a turning point in the decades old effort to breathe new life into downtown Lake Charles. Port Wonder will be home to the Southwest Louisiana Children’s Museum and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Science Center and Educational Complex.

As for parking, developers will tell you it can make or break a project. Mayor Hunter knows that people are tired of looking at the decaying Harrah’s parking garage. He says, “Renovating the garage was the financially responsible thing to do. It would have cost up to $15 million to rebuild from scratch, but renovation will be closer to $3 million, and those 400 parking spots on the waterfront are crucial.” Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries (LWF) agents will be housed at Port Wonder, giving them a unique opportunity to interact with young people at the 8,400 square foot science and nature center where they can encourage them to respect and protect Louisiana’s natural assets. The center includes aquariums, a touch tank, Gulf-specific exhibits, and a covered fishing pier. LWF Press Secretary Ed Pratt says, “The complex will focus on what makes Sportsman’s Paradise special. Any town does better when they have a place where kids can be educated about our rich natural heritage and enjoy family activities.” After LSU Tiger Football, the Knock Knock Children’s Museum of Baton Rouge is the top tourism draw for the city. Its first year of operation attracted more than 200,000 visitors. The same designers will now turn their attention to the expansive Children’s Museum of SWLA, dreaming up an experience unique to Lake Charles. Children’s Museum Interim Director Allyson Montgomery says, “Most people don’t realize how big a tourism driver a children’s museum can be. Our old Broad Street location attracted more than 40,000 annual visitors with limited space and parking. We’re looking forward to doubling that number with our new custom designed space and high visibility to travelers on I-10 who are looking for a family friendly stop or day trip.”

Kids and parents alike will love the life-size Operation Game planned for the new space plus a dedicated health gallery and a racetrack where children sit on moving cars shaped like blood cells and zoom through the human body. The museum will also have a dedicated bus drop-off area, large outdoor play space and plenty of restrooms. Construction on Port Wonder is set to begin by late 2021 and will take 18 months to complete. Work on the children’s museum begins after the New Year with an opening date of early summer 2023. Parking garage renovations begin in a few months. Construction is fully funded but the museum is launching a fundraising drive for programs and staffing. and her State Farm Team Rally to Help the Community Post-Hurricane Laura Along with the rest of the Southwest Louisiana community, Jennifer Mabou closely watched the weather forecasts late August 2020. By the time it became apparent that Hurricane Laura was headed straight for a Cameron landfall, she and her team were already reaching out to the community via social media, providing vital information they would need in the coming days. One day after the storm, they were back at their office, ready to assist both their clients and the community. “We had no power and no running water, but we set up a tent in our parking lot and used a notebook and cell phones to start taking claims,” Mabou says. “We met with not only our customers, but State Farm customers from all over Southwest Louisiana. Being present and being visible was important. People showed up on foot, in their cars, and on bikes. There were so many people who showed up and just needed a hug and a shoulder to cry on. After four days of working in our parking lot, I secured a generator to run one window unit in my office. We had customers show up to file their claim and several even took naps on the floor of my office in the cool air.

Our presence mattered. Our customers needed us. One thing I said from the very beginning of the recovery process was that I couldn’t control everything, but I absolutely could control my and my team’s response to our customers. We have been hands on since day one and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I live in this community; I am raising my family here. I owe it to my customers, my friends, to be present and to be their advocates.” After the first few days post-Hurricane Laura, the magnitude of what Mabou and her team were facing started to set in. “I reached out to State Farm agents across the country and pleaded for their help for our community. Before long, my office had become the hub of donations and free meals. We handed out over 4,000 hot meals, countless cases of water, cleaning supplies, baby diapers, gift cards, clothes . . . the list goes on and on. It wasn’t just about my customers – we did it for everyone in our community. We had families show up to get meals and we discovered they were living out of their vehicles. It was such a sad time, but also one of such great hope. I saw so many people pull together to help one another. I was humbled to be able to help at a time when so many were feeling so helpless.”

Mabou says social media, especially Facebook, was a life saver for them during Hurricane Laura. “Before the storm, we communicated to mass quantities of people about how to prepare and what documents to have readily available. Once the storm hit, we used Facebook to blast links to file claims. Once the claims process started, we used social media to send daily tips on how to navigate through the claims process. We chimed in on topics like documenting damages, tracking expenses, understanding your coverages, and most importantly, fact checking so many false posts from people on social media. Our posts reached tens of thousands of people and the feedback was awesome. We kept that up for months.” “Hurricane Laura now sits as the #1 catastrophe in State Farm’s 99-year history,” says Mabou. “That shows you the magnitude of destruction that impacted our communities. It was a huge storm that hit us in the middle of a global pandemic. Our resources were scarce, our workforce was weakened, and the work to be done was vast. Ten months later, and I still spend six to seven hours a day working claims. I will continue to be an advocate for my customers.”

MAYFIELD CHIROPRACTIC HELPS CLIENTS REDUCE STRESS RYAN D. HEROLD, D.C., M.S.,
owner and practitioner at Mayfield Chiropractic, personally understands the added stress Southwest Louisiana residents have experienced since 2020. The pandemic forced his business to close in spring 2020, and in August, both his office and his residence suffered significant damage from Hurricane Laura. “Stress management has become a key player in our lives,” he says. “Throughout this time, we have done what we can to keep our doors open and be available to our patients to help alleviate some of their stress.
Our ability to help people maintain physical function through their daily labors of cleaning up and restoring their lives has been a blessing.” Even prior to 2020, Dr. Herold emphasized the value of stress management and made it a priority for his clients. He opened his clinic in 2015 and knows how important decreasing stress is to a person’s overall health. “We work to lower stress levels through the use of tools and the knowledge we have, for example: chiropractic care, nutrition, supplementation and exercises. Supplements help boost patient’s immune systems to help prevent them from getting sick or to aid in their recovery process.
Good nutrition is key to lowering inflammation throughout the body and to give the body the tools it needs for health and repair.” In addition to stress management, Mayfield Chiropractic also offers corrective exercise programs, sports injury treatment, and neck pain relief. They offer a friendly, professional atmosphere that you can rely on for all your chiropractic needs. Find us on Facebook or at MCLCchiro.com

he Local Heart Foundation was a dream within the hearts of co-founders Tim and Tammy Andreas, who wanted to help their neighbors in Southwest Louisiana who were dealing with heart disease after experiencing the impacts themselves. At the age of 36, Tim went for a jog while on a business trip in New York City. While running, he experienced a condition known as Sudden Cardiac Death. Tim had no heartbeat, pulse or response of blood pressure for over 18 minutes, but through many miracles and God’s mercy, he is fully recovered. With these experiences, Tim and Tammy made it their mission to raise awareness and funds by creating the Local Heart Foundation in 2017. They continually saw the unmet needs of local heart patients who could benefit from assistance with financial expenses, heart-felt support, and encouragement, and they sought to make a difference. Due to the pandemic and two major hurricanes, the Local Heart Foundation cancelled four annual fundraisers in 2020 and were displaced after their office was destroyed in Hurricane Laura. Many of the heart patients they assisted lost everything in the hurricanes, including their homes, and those who did have a home to go back to lacked electricity, air conditioning, and dealt with overall dangerous living conditions. The Local Heart Foundation was able to provide assistance with evacuation expenses for hotel rooms, food, and gas as well as donating generators and window air conditioning units to families who remained in the area. Although they faced many changes and challenges in the past year, they never stopped helping heart patients in our area,

including providing assistance with living expenses to two local families and their two young children who had heart transplants. DEAD PEDAL COFFEE COMPANY
Growing up, brothers Blaike and Cody Andreas were passionate about two things – extreme sports and coffee. “Coffee was such a big part of our lives growing up,” they say. “We were always drinking coffee with family, friends, and even on the dirt bike track as we camped out after we rode at the end of the day.”
IT’S NOT JUST COFFEE IT’S A LIFESTYLE
So it’s no surprise that, three years ago, they decided to merge their interests and start an online coffee company that mirrors their lifestyle – daring, edgy, adventurous. They market their products to serious coffee lovers who desire a bold, fresh roasted brew that will kickstart their day. Blaike and Cody spent over two years, day in and day out, roasting and tasting, perfecting their four main roasts from bean origins across the world’s coffee belt. In 2019, they started with a trial phase – no advertising, no social media, strictly word of mouth. “And it completely took off,” they said. “We knew we had something going. The power sports industry that we cater to is a very supportive, welcoming, and tight knit group. We want everyone who takes a sip of our coffee to feel like they are part of the Dead Pedal Coffee family!” The Andreas brothers roast, package, and ship every order from their location in Moss Bluff, La. Their customers run the gamut from individuals, businesses, pro racers and baseball players, MMA fighters, car and truck enthusiasts, and independent coffee shops across America. They offer whole bean and ground coffee, and coffee pods, aka Spark Plugs. “Everything we do at Dead Pedal Coffee is done by hand and to order, so we can provide our customers with the freshest cup of coffee we can possibly make,” Cody added. Blaike and Cody have a trailer they take to farmers markets, festivals, and other events. Follow them on social media or go to their website, deadpedalcoffee.com for more information.

WALNUT GROVE…
Past, Present and Future Walnut Grove is one of Southwest Louisiana’s most graceful and storied communities. From the late 1800s through the mid1920s, Walnut Grove was a scenic gathering place near the Calcasieu River. In 1926, the Port of Lake Charles occupied the property, which led to tremendous growth and development across the region.
In 2014,
another chapter began when Walnut Grove Development was established. This traditional neighborhood is now home to numerous businesses and private residences. Candace Scroggs, Walnut Grove Vice President, and her family call the community home. “Three generations of my family live here and we all love the picturesque setting. We especially enjoy riding bikes to the park or walking over to Calla for dinner,” said Scroggs. Walnut Grove successfully weathered the previous storms and residents are looking forward to new neighbors joining the community. Hoffpauir Properties is constructing two new buildings at Walnut Grove – one will house Thomas Guy Interiors, and the other everyone’s favorite local bakery, The Bekery. The Bekery will celebrate its fifth anniversary this October by opening a beautiful new restaurant in Walnut Grove. “The Bekery will be a great gathering spot for the entire neighborhood,” said Scroggs. With several prime residential lots remaining, now is the perfect time to build your forever home in Walnut Grove. Greg Wise, Latter and Blum Realtor, also calls Walnut Grove home. “Having lived near downtown Lake Charles most all my life, I appreciate the traditional southern architecture and superior infrastructure, especially drainage, that make Walnut Grove a great place to call home.” 2021 - Annual Issue

LAKE CHARLES CARE CENTER
Making an IMPACT
When Lake Charles Care Center (LCCC) management asked their residents for suggestions to name their monthly newsletter, the residents named it IMPACT, because they noticed the staff and management are committed to making a positive impact on the lives of their residents. From the moment you enter the facility, you can feel the difference.
Like most structures in Southwest Louisiana, LCCC was damaged by the 2020 hurricanes. Management had evacuated residents and staff to a sister facility prior to the storms, and everyone stayed safe and comfortable. They acted swiftly and renovated the entire facility, including all new furniture. Residents and staff returned to LCCC in April 2021. Conveniently located off the 210 Loop in Lake Charles, LCCC continues its legacy as a professionally managed community staffed by skilled members of the surrounding areas who work as a team and practice accountability. They offer friendly surroundings, personalized 24-hour service, and all the comforts of home while embracing values of dignity, understanding and respect. Whether you’re looking for shortterm rehabilitation, long-term nursing
care or specialized services for dementia care, the compassionate staff and a newly renovated community offer all the comforts of home in a warm, friendly atmosphere. An open communications policy is maintained between staff and residents’ family members to ensure that every resident’s needs are met. They also encourage relationships between the LCCC family and the community they serve. Established in 1974, LCCC has consistently made an impact on the Lake Charles community by providing an exceptional level of service and exceeding the expectations of employees, residents, families, vendors and friends. To meet the needs of the community, LCCC opened The Lodge in 2019. Located adjacent to the main building with a private entrance, The Lodge provides short-term rehabto-home services in a comfortable,
modern environment. It offers 20 private rooms with private restrooms, a state-of-the-art gym, a private dining room with inroom dining service available, and more. For those who are not quite ready to go home after a hospital stay, the Lodge provides a desirable option while transitioning back to home. LCCC amenities include: • Private accommodations • Television in each room with free cable and Wi-Fi • Three restaurant-style dining rooms • Secure memory care community • The Lodge, exclusive rehab-tohome community • State-of-the-art therapy gym • Custom programs to promote physical, emotional and social wellbeing
.
