Reaccreditations, Renewed Spaces and a Resolute Pursuit Towards
Health Equity by Christine Fisher
West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital (WCCH) celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2023. As physicians and hospital leadership have taken time to recognize accomplishments, they’re also looking ahead to the future and methods to care for the community they serve. “Throughout our history, the growth of the hospital has reflected the region’s dynamic growth, with services added to meet the needs of our community,” explains Janie Frugé, CEO of WCCH. “We’re pleased to have recently received several recognitions honoring the quality of care we provide. We’re also excited about facility improvements that are underway, as well as renewing our efforts to ensure all members of our community have access to care.” The American Diabetes Association (ADA) honored the diabetes education program at WCCH recently and granted reaccreditation by the ADA for another four years. The program has been accredited by the ADA for the past 18 years. This recognition certifies that WCCH’s diabetes education program meets the national standards, ensuring the quality and success of education provided to people with diabetes. The program consists of weekly education classes and one-on-one education sessions with patients when needed. A support group is also held monthly, covering topics such as heart health, diet, exercise and more. Blue Cross Blue Shield recently recognized the Women’s Center at WCCH as a Blue Distinction Center for Maternity Care. It is given to facilities that display meaningful quality and value for consumers and show expertise in delivering specialty care. The Women’s Center combines the latest technology with wellrespected OB/GYNs and a certified midwife along with compassionate and experienced clinical staff members. Comfort, peace of mind and safety are delivered to every patient, making it among the most popular birthing centers in the region. The Joint Commission bestowed its Gold Seal of Approval® to the WCCH Laboratory recently, demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The reviewers evaluated compliance with laboratory standards spanning several areas including bacteriology,
blood transfusion services, clinical chemistry and molecular testing. The WCCH lab is under the medical direction of Robert L. Rumsey, MD. Outpatient lab testing is also available at the WCCH Outpatient Lab Draw Station and The Pathology Laboratory located at 1327 Stelly Lane, Suite 1, in Sulphur. Renovations are underway to OBG-1, the offices of Scott Bergstedt, MD, FACOG, OB/GYN and Allison Hansen, WHNP, certified nurse midwife, with a new provider joining the practice this month. Located at 1200 Stelly Lane, the updates are expected to be completed in the spring. OBG-1 offers complete care for women, including pregnancy and delivery, contraception, pelvic pain, breast disorders and menopause management. Responding to the healthcare needs of the community has been a long-standing pillar of WCCH, along with ensuring all have access to quality health services. Health equity aims to ensure that no one is disadvantaged from achieving this potential because of social position or any other socially defined circumstance, such as physical access, language barriers, disadvantaged communities or social injustice. WCCH recently participated in a months’ long health equity review to assess organizational structure with health equity in mind, define areas within the community where additional programs are needed, implement policies and assistance to address those populations and develop a multidisciplinary health equity task force to ensure the ongoing work of minimizing health disparities in the organization and community. With this focus in mind, the Community Health Center of WCCH provides a variety of healthcare services to all members of the community, including adult primary care, walk-ins, and specialty care for general surgery, gynecology and wound care with plans to expand service lines in the future. The Community Health Center of WCCH is open to all patients – including those with Medicaid, Medicare, insurance and those without insurance. “Healthcare is ever evolving. As providers, we are on the forefront of ensuring our community receives quality care,” says Frugé. “As we aim to achieve excellence in all areas, we recognize that exceptional care is found in compassion, understanding and experience. The healing that happens throughout our organization is a tribute to the skill and expertise of our physicians and staff.”

CHRISTUS Ochsner St. Patrick Hospital Debuts
Hybrid OR Suite by Taylor Trahan Henry
Traditional operating rooms have long been the hub of surgical procedures, providing a sterile environment for surgeons to perform interventions. On that same note, catheterization laboratories (cath labs) are dedicated to less invasive procedures focused more on diagnosing and imaging. In many hospitals the two exist independently, with patients moving from the cath lab to the operating room as needed for surgical intervention. In late summer of 2023, CHRISTUS Ochsner St. Patrick Hospital introduced a Hybrid OR Suite, the only one of its kind between Houston and Lafayette. Hybrid ORs are state-of-the-art facilities that seamlessly combine traditional surgical environments with cutting-edge imaging technology, offering a versatile space that significantly enhances the precision and efficacy of cardiovascular interventions. “For decades, our cardiologists have been at the forefront of medical technology and innovation,” says Jim Davidson, president and chief operating officer of CHRISTUS Ochsner Health Southwestern Louisiana. “This was the logical next step in continuing to bring the best cardiovascular care to our patients.” One of the primary advantages of hybrid ORs is the ability to quickly move from diagnostics to intervention. Without having to break down the sterile field, medical teams can easily transition. When treating cardiovascular issues, time is precious, and these seamless transitions improve patient outcomes and decrease risks. Another advantage of hybrid ORs in cardiovascular care is the ability to perform interventions with realtime imaging guidance. This allows surgeons to visualize intricate details of the cardiovascular system, facilitating precise navigation during procedures such as angioplasty, stent placement, and valve repairs. The versatility of hybrid ORs promotes collaboration between different medical specialties. Cardiovascular surgeons, interventional cardiologists, radiologists, and other specialists can work together seamlessly, combining their expertise to address complex cases in a single, integrated environment. When it comes to cardiovascular care in Southwest Louisiana, CHRISTUS Ochsner St. Patrick has long been the area’s choice for world-class care. “This addition was the result of philanthropic donations from our community,” says Davidson. “Patients who received and were extremely pleased with the care at our facility, and who had the means to do so, made gifts to make this a reality.” Hybrid ORs represent a groundbreaking shift in the paradigm of cardiovascular care, offering integration of surgical precision and advanced imaging technology. The benefits of real-time imaging, minimally invasive procedures, and multidisciplinary collaboration underscore the transformative impact of hybrid ORs on patient outcomes. As technology continues to advance, the future holds promising possibilities for further refining these innovative spaces.

Healthcare Update: Lake Charles Memorial Hospital In August 2023 Lake Charles Memorial was named on Becker’s Healthcare list of “Great Community Hospitals.” This list celebrates hospitals’ dedication to optimizing healthcare in their community. “As Southwest Louisiana’s largest community health system, it’s an honor to be named among other prestigious healthcare organizations from around the country. This award is a direct reflection of the elevated level of care and compassion that our healthcare team offers every day,” says Devon Hyde, President and CEO. According to American Hospital Association there are currently 5,157 community hospitals across the country. This places Lake Charles Memorial in the top 3% in the United States. Community education and injury prevention Since 2019, Lake Charles Memorial Hospital has been designated a Level III Trauma Center. As the region’s leader in trauma care, Memorial has taken on the responsibility of providing injury prevention education to the public, as well as high-level training to medical professionals and members of the community responsible for the provision of trauma care. Memorial’s Trauma Symposium is a full-day program with an audience of area nurses, physicians, EMS providers, and other allied healthcare professionals. The symposium teaches best practices, tips to achieving best outcomes, and navigating obstacles so that trauma patients in the SWLA community are better cared for, from pre-hospital care through their rehabilitation process. The trauma team is actively engaged in a state-wide effort to reduce distracted and impaired driving among teenage drivers, called Sudden Impact. The education is a three-part program in a classroom setting at the hospital, a mock car crash, and a mock legal trial to show the consequences of poor decisions. In 2022-2023 school year, the LCMHS trauma and outreach team engaged with four local high schools. For the 2023-2024 school year, the team is on track to increase that number to eight. Precise technology, compassionate cancer care One way Memorial is optimizing care close to home, is placing an emphasis on ensuring women in SWLA have access to accurate and advanced breast health care without having to leave the region. Radiologists, Dr. Richard Martinez and Dr. Mark Trahan work collaboratively with general and breast surgeon, Dr. Amanda Ellington, and the rest of the radiology and cancer navigation team, to provide timely care from suspicious find, to treatment, for patients with breast cancer. Memorial offers stereotactic breast biopsies. The stereotactic breast biopsy machine helps the doctor visualize the tissue of the breast from two different angles. These angles create a 3D

image used to target and guide the biopsy needle to a precise location. Stereotactic breast biopsies are performed as an outpatient procedure. There’s minimal pain and no scarring. By cutting down the time of a conventional biopsy, the technology available at Lake Charles Memorial ensures patients a less invasive procedure, higher level of comfort, and better accuracy—leading to earlier diagnosis of breast cancer and earlier treatment for SWLA women. “It’s all about the patient experience, giving them an answer quickly, reducing anxiety and walking with each patient on their journey,” says Dr. Amanda Ellington. Expansions Lake Charles Memorial Health System announced an agreement with the Lower Cameron Hospital Service District DBA “South Cameron Memorial Hospital,” to provide the citizens of Cameron Parish with access to healthcare services in Cameron Parish. The agreement includes the placement and operation of a temporary mobile health unit by Lake Charles Memorial Hospital that will provide primary care services to Cameron Parish residents and a lease to operate a health clinic. Additionally, the agreement names Lake Charles Memorial Hospital as the managing and operating partner of the South Cameron Memorial Hospital. “This is an exciting partnership with our healthcare neighbors in Cameron Parish,” states Devon Hyde, President & CEO of Lake Charles Memorial Health System. “More than anything, we view this partnership as an investment in the people of Cameron Parish. It’s a true privilege and it’s the right thing to do.” “The partnership allows Lake Charles Memorial to reach out to the peripheral of the 5-parish region, connecting the people of Cameron Parish to a strong network of providers and specialties, affording a healthcare home in their home parish,” says Jason Rashall, Chief Strategy Officer with Lake Charles Memorial Health System. While adding over 500 new employees, along with recruiting 25 new medical providers in 2023, Memorial continues to grow and remains the second largest employer in the region, offering a place for over 2,500+ employees to provide for their families and reach their career goals. In the new year the community can look forward to the new Memorial Diagnostic and Imaging Center. Serving the 19,000+ residents of Moss Bluff, plus the surrounding areas. Lake Charles Memorial is expanding and offering imaging and diagnostic services in the Moss Bluff area. In Spring 2024 you will no longer need to drive to Lake Charles for: CT scans, X-Rays, Mammograms, Bone Density Screenings, Ultrasounds and more.
No one wants to hear the words…”You have cancer.” If it happens though, the Cancer Center specialists at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital are with you every step of the journey. Commuting to a big city for ongoing treatments can be a thing of the past. Memorial provides cutting edge cancer surgery and treatments, exactly as your oncologist prescribes—right here and close to home. You and your quality of life are important to us.

Center for Orthopaedics by Kristy Como Armand
The Center for Orthopaedics (CFO) is the region’s largest musculoskeletal group, serving all of Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas. The group recently expanded to include a second location in Moss Bluff. The medical staff is now made up of 18 doctors in various specialties, along with three podiatric surgery residents and a large support staff of clinicians and office personnel. Part of the group’s commitment to their patients includes bringing the latest advances in care to the region, from surgical technology like the MAKO robotic-assisted system for more precise hip and knee replacement procedures, new innovations to manage pain without narcotics, and advanced wound healing capabilities. The CFO doctors also remain focused on working with young athletes. They supervise a team of experienced athletic trainers who provide sports medicine coverage for 22 regional high schools to prevent and treat injuries in young athletes. Dr. John Noble also serves as a team orthopaedic surgeon for McNeese Athletics. Under the direction of Dr. Tyson Green, the CHRISTUS St. Patrick Southwest Louisiana Podiatric Medicine & Surgical Residency Program has continued to grow, providing the next generation of foot and ankle specialists comprehensive training in podiatric medicine, with a strong emphasis on foot and ankle surgery. CFO’s OrthoExpress is a feature that makes quick access to care for an injury more convenient, providing an appointment within 24 hours. Within their offices, CFO has put a level of electronic health record technology in place to enhance the connectivity and efficiency of the patient experience, from scheduling, check-in to check-out and through follow-up, that cannot be found anywhere else in the region. The wide range of specialists at CFO allows patients to receive collaborative care when needed, all within one group. In addition, there is an imaging center contained within the group’s Lake Charles office. This collaborative approach is not only more convenient for patients, but also optimizes the level of care they receive. Learn more about the doctors and services at www.CenterForOrtho.com.

Lake Charles has a new place for residents to satisfy their sweet cravings —Crave Cookies of Lake Charles. Co-owned by Tommy Johns, Kristi and Cheyenne Boudreaux, and Toni and Kody Cannon, Crave Cookies has quickly become a popular place for treating yourself, friends, or family to the perfect cookie. Tommy Johns, one of the proud co-owners, shared the inspiration behind bringing the nationally acclaimed cookie chain to Lake Charles. “We saw the success of this business model elsewhere and we started researching it for ourselves,” he says. “We met with the company and after hearing their story and testing the product, we were sold.” The co-owners then started on a two-year journey from the conceptualization phase to the grand opening of Crave Cookies on August 19, 2023. Crave Cookies, originating from Utah, is a relatively new franchise that has taken the nation by storm with its unique approach to crafting cookies. Every Friday, Crave Cookies introduces a new lineup of six unforgettable flavors, ensuring that each visit offers a fresh excuse to forget your diet and indulge in a moment of selfcare with icing on top. What sets Crave Cookies apart is not just their commitment to flavor but also their dedication to the entire baking process. “We believe in the product. We sampled over 30 cookies – all fresh, flavorful, and unique,” says Johns. “Unlike other cookie chains, Crave Cookies ensures that every cookie is made in-house, avoiding the frozen shipment process.” The cookie craze isn’t new and it surely isn’t new to the area but Johns says it’s a great thing with each retailer having their niche. “We’re privileged to operate in such a supportive community,” says Johns. “We strive to continue to have quality products and excellent service. Our drive-thru option adds a layer of convenience for those on the go.” In addition to their mouthwatering cookies, Crave Cookies of Lake Charles offers a unique twist to the traditional soda menu. Patrons can complement their favorite cookies with a full soda menu featuring customizable flavor options. From the exotic Coke-O-Lada with pineapple and coconut cream to the tantalizing Georgia Peach with Dr. Pepper, vanilla, peach, and half and half, or the refreshing Fruity Dew with Mello Yello, raspberry, peach, and vanilla cream—Crave Cookies ensures that the cookie-soda pairing is an experience in itself. If you’re looking for a unique dessert, look no further! Recently, they've started offering custom cookie cakes, allowing you to pair a special message with that famous Crave flavor. These cookies are crafted with top-tier ingredients and made fresh in house. Swing by to satisfy your sweet tooth or make a delicious delivery to friends and family.
Sip in Style by Taylor Trahan Henry
The glass you choose can elevate your drinking experience from ordinary to extraordinary. Just as a chef selects the perfect utensil for a specific dish, a bartender carefully curates the drinkware to complement the nuances of various cocktails and spirits. When you’re party planning this season, keep in mind the tricks of the trade!
Highball Glass: The Everyday Champion
Copper Mugs: Mule Magic
Lowball Glass: Embracing Elegance
Wine Glasses: Beyond the Grape
Let’s start with the basics. The highball glass, tall and slim, is a versatile vessel suitable for a wide range of cocktails. Its design is perfect for drinks that are light on the alcohol content and heavy on mixers, such as a classic Gin and Tonic or a refreshing Mojito. The highball’s tall stature allows for a generous amount of ice, keeping your beverage cool and refreshing.
Also known as the rocks glass or oldfashioned glass, the lowball glass is a short, stout tumbler ideal for spirits served neat or on the rocks. This glass is the go-to choice for classic cocktails like the Old Fashioned or a perfectly crafted Whiskey Sour. Its wide mouth allows you to savor the complex aromas of aged spirits, enhancing the overall tasting experience.
Martini Glass: A Touch of Glamour
If you’re in the mood for sophistication and a touch of Hollywood glamour, the martini glass is your gal. With its iconic inverted cone shape and long stem, this glass is designed to showcase the clarity and color of the cocktail. Martinis, Manhattans, and other spirit-forward drinks find their home in this elegant vessel, making every sip a statement of style.
The copper mug has become synonymous with one particular cocktail—the Moscow Mule. The metal vessel not only keeps the drink chilled to perfection but also adds a unique sensory experience. The cold metal against your lips enhances the zesty kick of ginger beer and the crispness of vodka. It’s a must-have for anyone seeking the full flavor profile of this classic cocktail.
Don’t let the name fool you; wine glasses aren’t just for wine. The tulip shape of a wine glass is designed to concentrate aromas, making it an excellent choice for aromatic cocktails like a classic Negroni or a fruity Sangria. The delicate curvature of the glass allows you to appreciate the complex bouquet of flavors with every sip.
Tiki Mugs: Tropical Paradise in a Cup
Transport yourself to a tropical paradise with the whimsical tiki mug. These vibrant and elaborately designed vessels are the hallmark of exotic and fruity cocktails like the Mai Tai or Zombie. The elaborate shapes and sizes of tiki mugs not only contribute to the festive atmosphere but also enhance the overall experience of sipping a vacation-inspired drink. In the world of mixology, the glass is not just a container; it’s a tool to enhance flavor and complement the beverage. Cheers to sipping in style!

All That Glitters is Purple, Green & Gold by Katelynn Mouton
One of the perks of calling southern Louisiana home is having the holiday season, and all its festivities, extend well beyond the start of the New Year. Just days after the clock strikes midnight, signaling the start of the New Year, the glitzy glamour of Mardi Gras makes its flamboyant appearance. Whether you are attending a Krewe ball or attending a King Cake party and searching for a small token of appreciation for your host or guests, options abound on unique, festive ideas. Locally, gift shops, boutiques, and other specialty retailers are stocked and ready, with infinite possibilities. Mardi Gras themed service and drinkware pieces like decorative chip and dip bowls, painted wine glasses, wine glass charms, coasters, holiday-themed chargers, tea towels and shot glasses are the gifts that keep on giving since they can be decorative and functional. Mardi Gras themed tumblers offer the perfect opportunity to take your Carnival Season spirit, and your favorite beverage, to your next party, parade or ball. With each year presenting a number of opportunities to shout, “Throw me something mister,” from the parade route, seasonal dresses, t-shirts, sweaters and other tops make for nice gifts. No outfit is complete without the accompanying accessories, so earrings, bracelets, purses, coin wallets, scarves and more also top this list of gift ideas. Louisiana celebrates its seafood, and rightfully so, but do not toss out those oyster shells once dinner is over.
Once cleaned, they make the perfect canvas to create a unique and memorable gift. Speaking of Louisiana’s love language, a themed gift basket, stocked with Cajun/Louisiana-Certified seasonings, sauces, drink mixes, coffee brews and more makes way for a fun and festive gift. Don’t forget the specialty cocktail mixes and be sure to toss a sweet smelling candle in to round out the basket. A number of local gift shops carry a wide variety of products from Louisiana candle makers, helping add a little Louisiana flavored lagniappe to your basket. In many Southwest Louisiana homes Christmas trees transition to Mardi Gras trees, making Mardi Gras ornaments of all varieties a great gift selection. Look to purchase ready-made products, or if you are feeling crafty, consider creating your own custom painted set to gift your host or guests. For the crafter or DIYer, custom painted wine or champagne bottles are a trending gift. Inspiration, tips, and tricks are plentiful on the Internet thanks to sites like Pinterest and Etsy, or commissioning a local artist or talented friend to paint your masterpiece is also an option. If you’re wanting to bring something both edible and festive, customized royal icing cookies make the perfect addition to any party. You can customize with Krewe names, Mardi Gras sayings, logos, and the colors of the season. No matter the gift selected, the true value lies in the memories made and bonds formed through celebrating one of Louisiana’s richest and longest running cultural celebrations.

Let the Good Times Roll
— Safely!
Louisiana’s Mardi Gras season can be an unforgettable and fun experience for your whole family. However, the crowds and traffic do pose certain safety risks if you’re unprepared to deal with them. “Mardi Gras in Southwest Louisiana is a fun, family-oriented experience,” says Stitch Guillory, Chief Deputy/Sheriff-Elect of the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office (CPSO). “But it’s important to be smart and stay safe while reveling in the season.” The CPSO offers the following tips for safely enjoying Mardi Gras fun:
Parade Spectators
• Avoid getting close to parade floats when you are watching or trying to catch beads. Never run into the street — floats cannot stop quickly. • Respect barricades, ropes or other items that are placed to separate the crowd from the parade. • Don’t follow behind floats or bands. • Keep your head up. And your eyes open, watching for throws. You want to catch the beads and other treats while you stand along the parade routes, not get hit by these throws. • Don’t put your hand on the ground to grab items thrown from floats. Your hand can be injured by someone stepping on it while you are doing so. Put your foot on it, and when it's safe (typically between floats), reach down to pick it up. • Don’t throw items at floats. • Use extreme caution when attempting to cross the parade route. Look for traffic officers for guidance. • Watch children carefully and never leave them unattended. Make sure your child knows their name, your phone number and address in case of separation. Write that information, along with your name, on a piece of paper and place it in the child’s pocket for added safety. • If you decide to put your child on your shoulders so they can catch special throws, be careful. Crowds can swell forward suddenly and unexpectedly, making it easy to get knocked over. • If you are being picked up or dropped off near the parade, pay attention to vehicles around you. There is a great risk of being hit by a vehicle that is not paying attention to those entering and exiting vehicles. • If you consume alcohol at the parade, do not drink and drive. Have a designated drive or ride share plan for after the parade.

hitting another float or injuring someone aboard your float. • Do not hand items such as beads to someone over the side of the float. It is safer to throw or toss items from the sides so that spectators can move back from the float. • Keep the number of passengers on the float to a safe number. • Ensure your float is properly attached to towing vehicles to avoid the float separating and hitting bystanders or other vehicles. • Do not stand or climb on anything inside the float. This increases the risk of a fall off of the float. • Only throw or toss items during the parade itself. Throwing items while going to/from the parade can cause traffic accidents or injuries to those not expecting it.
Parade Participants
• If you are a driver of a vehicle towing a float, consider having someone ride in the vehicle or cab with you to help you focus on safety and to help you in the event you have an emergency. • Drive slowly. Mardi Gras parades maintain a slower speed so spectators may observe the float decorations and keep the procession moving at a steady pace. Speeding increases the risk for striking a pedestrian, thriveswla.com

Beyond the Parades and Pageantry by Katelynn Mouton
What would Mardi Gras be without the flamboyance provided by Mardi Gras krewes? While many see these groups as a means to gather for colorful balls, parades and other fun, each one has its own unique history and purpose running far deeper than the purple, green and gold. Mardi Gras lends itself to Mardi Cause for many krewes, with members spending the off season focused on acts of service.
Krewe du Sauvage
Established in 2003, Krewe du Sauvage, or Krewe of the Wild, is one of the area’s largest and loudest krewes. “What started as a small group of friends hoping to preserve a love for local culture, fellowship, community service, and celebration has blossomed,” says Krewe du Sauvage Board Member Deanna Russell. “We are now more than 300 members strong and have been an active participant in all things SWLA Mardi Gras.” Russell says their membership is most proud of the opportunities they have to give back. Their efforts have included a cemetery clean-up, collections for the homeless, local women’s shelter, Catholic Charities, hurricane recovery, Bowl for Kids’ Sake, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Salvation Army bell ringing, fundraising for local charitable organizations, and more. “Sauvage’s philanthropic involvement resonates with our membership and their true heart for giving back to the community,” explains Russell. “Most have deep ties to this area, so there is a genuine bond between the members and Southwest Louisiana.”

Krewe de Bien Faire
In 2016 Krewe de Bien Fiare formed. Bien faire, or do good, perfectly encapsulates the mission of its members according to Krewe President Crys Acuff. “Committed to generosity and service, our organization is dedicated to giving back to the community. Our krewe is passionate about traditional Mardi Gras activities, but our true joy comes from giving back.” Activities include participation in a supply drive for DeWanna’s Community Closet and various drives for Food for Thought. Members also collected food and supplies for first responders during last summer’s wildfires. Members regularly gather food and items for Hobo Hotel and they engage in the annual Pick It Up Calcasieu anti-litter campaign. Krewe de Bien Faire worked with other krewes to pull off a Trunkor-Treat at Sam Houston State Park and joined forces with fellow krewes to establish an annual toy drive benefiting Brennan’s Blessings. “Mardi Gras is not just about floats, beads and throws. We are dedicated to embodying the Mardi Gras spirit through year-round acts of giving back. We hold a deep affection for our community and its people, striving to serve and uplift them,” says Acuff.
Krewe de Valhalla
In 2020, Krewe de Valhalla formed with a membership limited to veterans and their families. “Our krewe loves traditional Mardi Gras activities, including our ball, parades and more,” says Krewe Captain Chas Farrell, a Marine Corps and Iraq War veteran. “What sets us apart is our goal of helping our veterans and community.” Activities include collecting Mardi Gras beads for the Autism Society and dedicating a percentage of their Krewe Bingo proceeds to Lighthouse Ministries. The krewe helped raise funds for Carry the Load on Memorial Day and they helped put up and take down flags for the annual Avenue of Flags display. Other efforts include volunteering with Catholic Charities, Food for Thought, and DeWanna’s Closet. Krewe de Valhala was also part of the multi-krewe Trunk-or-Treat and toy drive benefiting Brennan’s Blessings, as well as collecting and distributing toys with Toys for Tots and collecting supplies during last summer’s wildfires.
The proceeds from the krewe’s annual golf tournament were used to purchase 100 Christmas trees for veterans and for providing a Secret Santa to 15 veteran families in need. “We want the community to understand that our krewe membership has never thought there was an expiration date on our commitment to service,” explains Farell. “Although we are not in uniform, we see the duty of service as a calling that we will continue to fulfill.”

Lake Charles Welcomes
Gumbeaux Gators In late December, The Texas Collegiate League (TCL) announced the addition of the Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators as the sixth team in the league for the 2024 season. This expansion marks a significant milestone for TCL expanding its footprint in Louisiana with the third team in the state, alongside the Baton Rouge Rougarou and Acadiana Cane Cutters. The Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators will play a total of 48 games, including 24 home games at McNeese State University’s Joe Miller Ballpark in Lake Charles. The season will kick off on May 30 and run through July 28, promising an exciting minor league baseball experience for players and fans alike. The Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators roster will feature a diverse mix of 30 players from Division I, II, III, and Junior Colleges, showcasing elite talent from Southwest Louisiana and across the nation. The TCL’s reputation for being heavily scouted by major league baseball makes it a sought-after destination for underclass collegiate baseball players seeking to elevate their skills during the summer months. “Highlighting our role as the baseball capital of Louisiana, this team adds another layer to our existing lineup of events,” said Eric Zartler, the senior vice president of sports. “It elevates our sports profile and enhances tourism, making Lake Charles an even more appealing destination.” Four ownership groups, which include Mike and Sharamie Moore, Joey and Lydia Odom, Brent and Julie Reeves, Luke and Stacey David, and Daniel and Kayla Odom, jointly own the team, with each group contributing to the success and growth of the Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators. Sam Moore, currently the director of sports relations at Visit Lake Charles, will serve as the general manager, overseeing the roster, players, sponsorships, and day-to-day operations. “We can’t wait to bring the high-energy Gumbeaux vibes to Joe Miller Ballpark,” Moore said. “We are bringing in a talented roster of top-notch players that are bound to make it an electrifying baseball season.”
Season tickets and packages will become available soon, offering fans an opportunity to secure their spot for a summer filled with thrilling baseball action. Gameday and other sponsorship opportunities are available. A streaming service will be in place for fans unable to attend in person, with season passes available for the streaming service. In an effort to build strong community ties, the Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators are actively seeking host families to provide a welcoming home environment for players during the summer. Host families will play a vital role in the players’ experience, offering a bed, two meals per day, access to laundry facilities, and the chance to form lasting relationships. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact Moore for further information on becoming a host family. “This TCL expansion marks a significant milestone for Southwest Louisiana,” Kyle Edmiston, the president and CEO of Visit Lake Charles, said. “With a powerhouse roster and strong community support, the Gumbeaux Gators are set up for success, promising not only an exciting inaugural season of baseball but also a boost for our destination as fans from near and far make their way to our backyard.” Since its establishment, the TCL has been a breeding ground for talent, with over 300 TCL players drafted by major league teams and no fewer than 20 making it to the big leagues. The league’s commitment to providing a wholesome, minor league-type atmosphere using wooden bats aligns with its mission of offering quality, inexpensive entertainment in a distinctly Southern, intimate atmosphere while promoting the game of baseball in the communities involved. Best
Positive Practices for the New Year by Kristy Como Armand
Yes, the New Year has come and gone again. For many of us that means our New Year’s resolutions have already come and gone too. Does it seem like every year you have the hope for change, but it never really happens? “I frequently encounter people who want lasting change, but don’t know how to make habits stick,” says Keri Forbess-McCorquodale, MS, LPC-S, LMFT, CEAP, president of Solutions Counseling & EAP. “But did you know lasting behavior change doesn’t stick unless we really
change our beliefs? Some of the best and easiest practices for changing your behaviors AND your beliefs come from being positive. Most are ‘positively’ simple and easy to understand.” Forbess-McCorquodale shares some guidance for creating positive resolutions for the New Year that can lead to lasting change:
HAVE A POSITIVE LIFE PURPOSE: Be the best positive influence to all people and all things.
Many people wonder what their life’s purpose is, and the answer is being the best positive influence. Knowing this maximizes the capacity of our human experience. It may even help others to like us better. The Dalai Lama said, “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.” And, “If you can, help others; if you cannot do that, at least do not harm them.”
BE AND DO SPIRITUAL: Spirituality is not a state of mind; it is a state of doing good and doing good with others.
This practice can help you sort through stress, anxiety, and depression. The basic premise is we are all capable of doing good! Being caught up in thinking good thoughts is not enough, you have to GO DO IT!
VERBALIZE APPRECIATION FOR WHAT YOU WANT AND LIKE: By telling others what we appreciate, we tell others how to treat us.
getting what we need and want with others in a healthy way. The “victim stance” is blatantly negative and tells others we prefer to focus our lives on the negative. By telling others what we appreciate and want, we also are more likely to feel positive about ourselves.
FOCUS ON OUR GRATITUDE: Parts of happiness come from recognizing things for which we are grateful.
When most people are hurt, sad, scared, or angry, their focus becomes trying to be extremely happy. This really isn’t realistic. What helps is to focus on being in a normal range, not trying to achieve a level of extreme happiness. Cultivate a mindset of gratitude by reflecting on the positive aspects of your life – as it is right now. Try this exercise: At the beginning of the week, write a list of 5 things for which you are grateful and spend time with them each day/ night before you go to bed (especially if things are tough that day). Focus on balancing the good and the bad. “If we take the time to think about our best behavior and attitudes, we really can become good with ourselves,” adds ForbessMcCorquodale. “Take the time to consider these suggestions as a different type of resolution, and if you can’t get over the hump, or continue to feel overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to seek professional support. Therapy provides a safe space to explore emotions, develop coping strategies, and gain valuable insight.”
We all need to be able to tell others what we want. This is one of the simplest ways of

Unlocking The Path to
Optimal Health by Taylor Trahan Henry
In the pursuit of a thriving lifestyle, it's essential to embrace a holistic approach to health—one that looks at the intricate balance of hormones, preventative measures, and sustainable weight loss strategies. Dawn Hinton, a dedicated nurse practitioner, shares insights that promise to help you in setting goals for your health in 2024. Hinton’s journey into hormone optimization began in 2009, fueled by her personal experience of navigating symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, and anxiety in her late twenties. Traditional approaches offered no solace until she discovered the transformative power of hormone optimization through pellets. This pivotal moment led her to dedicate the last seven years of her career to researching and educating patients, culminating in the opening of Revitalized Health in 2021. "Hormones play a crucial role in overall wellness," Hinton says. "Our cells rely on them for proper functioning. As we age, the decline in hormone production becomes evident." Common misconceptions persist, with normal ranges masking optimization needs. She advocates for early intervention, asserting that optimizing hormones can prevent a myriad of age-related diseases. “Additionally, hormones are crucial to preventing breast cancer, uterine cancer, prostate cancer, osteoporosis, balance, weakness, frailty, heart disease, diabetes, cognitive dysfunction, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease,” says Hinton. “There is a difference between having normal levels of hormones and optimizing. If we optimize hormones when they start to decrease initially, we can help reduce the incidence of most disease processes associated with aging and improve quality of life.” Preventative health measures, according to Hinton, involve staying active, consuming quality food, reducing alcohol intake, managing stress, and prioritizing sleep. But, she cautions against a onesize-fits-all approach, urging individuals experiencing

hormone imbalances to seek providers who prioritize preventative health over mere disease management. When it comes to weight loss, Hinton challenges the term 'diet' and encourages lifestyle changes. She emphasizes the importance of tailored meal plans, incorporating lower calorie intake, reduced carbohydrates, and higher protein to maintain satiety and decrease inflammation. “Customization is key,” she says. “Extensive blood panels guide individualized health plans, considering factors like affordability and patient needs.” This thorough assessment allows for the diagnosis of multiple conditions during a single visit, providing a comprehensive roadmap for a patient's health journey. As with any journey, challenges exist, with resistance to hormones and lack of education posing significant hurdles. Hinton addresses these by empowering patients with evidence-based research, dispelling myths, and fostering open communication. She stresses the importance of finding experienced providers, as treating hormones requires a nuanced understanding to avoid potential side effects. “Physical activity is a cornerstone of any wellness journey,” Hinton says. “ Moving your body promotes natural hormone production, builds muscle mass, and improves cardiovascular health. Starting slow and gradually increasing intensity, with a goal of 300 minutes of moderate exercise per week and two days of weighted exercises, is a solid plan.” Looking ahead to 2024, Hinton anticipates groundbreaking developments, citing GLP-1 receptor agonists as game-changers in weight loss. While acknowledging their efficacy, she warns against clinics merely selling weight loss drugs without addressing the root causes of obesity. Establish a Consistent Sleep Schedule Strive to maintain a regular sleep schedule, even on your days off. Consistency helps regulate your body’s internal clock, making it easier to fall asleep and wake up naturally. Optimize Your Sleep Environment Transform your bedroom into a haven for resting. Ensure it is dark, quiet, and cool. Invest in comfortable bedding and consider blackout curtains to minimize external disruptions. Limit Exposure to Artificial Light Minimize exposure to electronic screens before bedtime, as the blue light emitted can interfere
with melatonin production. Create a windingdown routine that helps signal your body that it’s time to sleep. Prioritize Physical Activity and a Balanced Diet Regular exercise and a healthy diet contribute to overall well-being and can positively impact sleep. Incorporate physical activity into your routine and be mindful of your food choices, particularly close to bedtime.
Strategic Napping Incorporate short naps before your shift to combat fatigue. Avoid napping too close to bedtime to preserve the quality of your nighttime sleep.
The Sleep Disorder Center of Louisiana provides comprehensive solutions for your sleep health. In addition to these home-based strategies, they’ve recently introduced two new services designed to enhance your sleep care experience. Easy Nutrition Hacks to

Your Good Health
One of the best things about healthy eating is that we have the power to fuel our bodies with high quality foods filled with vitamins and minerals. On the other hand, we have the power to choose candy bars and fried foods, made up of sugar, fat, and empty calories. It’s all within our control. While those lower quality foods are tempting, choosing nutritious foods is one of the best ways to promote good health. “Your daily food choices make a

big impact,” says Cynthia Chantlin, RD, LDN, CDCES with West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital. “The body works with what it’s given. A person’s energy level, overall health, and even their ability to fight off viruses and illnesses, are influenced by the foods they eat on a regular basis.” Whether you’re just starting your health journey with a resolution this new year or you’re a seasoned veteran looking for ways to take things to the next level, Chantlin suggests several easy-to-implement tips. “Evaluate your current eating routine compared to these ideas and see if there is anything you can tweak or improve. Try implementing one or two ideas then move on to others. A gradual improvement is better than no improvement.”
Kick start your day with protein.
Whether to eat breakfast or not is an often-debated issue, but for most people, eating in the morning is beneficial. For those who eat breakfast, choose proteinrich foods, such as whole grain toast and eggs, or peanut butter toast. These foods will help you feel fuller longer, keeping you satisfied throughout the morning.
Plan ahead.
Even with the best of intentions, we can fall victim to time constraints and rushed schedules and end up reaching for convenience foods that may not be nutritious. Protein powders and bars can be a good alternative for a quick yet nutritious meal. “You can pre-pack an on-the-go meal,” says Chantlin. “Nuts, low-fat ham or turkey, crackers, cheese, boiled eggs and celery or carrot sticks makes a fabulous meal. Pick up a few reusable containers and make a few of these on the weekend to grab and go whenever needed in the week ahead.”
Add a multivitamin – and take it with food.
Multivitamins are a great way to ensure you’re getting those needed nutrients. Consistency is key to getting the full benefits of a daily multivitamin, and taking with food is most effective. So, taking it daily at breakfast will help accomplish both consistency and efficacy. “Many vitamins are fat-soluble, including A, K, E, and D; they need fat to absorb into the body,” explains Chantlin.
Select a salad more often.
From Caesar to the garden variety, salads can be a creative, nutritionally dense addition to your eating plan. The varieties of lettuce, vegetables and cheeses are abundant at grocery stores, you can come up with countless combinations. If the thought of washing and chopping is not appealing, you can build your own at many casual restaurants and even grocery stores. “Salads are filled with a variety of vegetables, which provide many vitamins and minerals. Add a protein such as cheese, chicken or a boiled egg to round out the nutrition to help keep you feeling fuller longer,” Chantlin says. Green leafy vegetables found in many salads, such as romaine lettuce, spinach and kale, are rich in vitamins A, C, and E which help support healthy eyesight, help immune function and protect against certain cancers. Many vitamins found in salads double as antioxidants with anti-inflammatory effects in the body, and many salads contain essential minerals, like potassium, iron, and magnesium. “Salad is one of the easiest ways to combine a lot of nutrition in one meal,” Chantlin says. Jumpstart your health with the nutrition hacks above and fuel your body with high quality foods for best results.

Motivation for
Movement by Christine Fisher
Bodies were made to move. In fact, researchers say that being too sedentary will shorten one’s lifespan, diminish the quality of life, and contribute to the development of chronic diseases. “The human body is made up of 360 joints and over 700 muscles,” says Shelby Hodges, CSCS, exercise specialist with Dynamic Dimensions Fitness Center of West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital. “The vascular and nervous systems depend on movement to function.” When we sit for too long at a time, our bodies begin to ache, reminding us that it’s time to get up and move around. Conversely, when we move for a long period of time, our bodies need rest. Balancing activities and rest are the keys to healthy living. However, there is no question that today, many of us lean much more toward a more sedentary lifestyle than being too active. “Think back to generations before us,” says Hodges. “Our parents and grandparents moved throughout their days; walking to the store, washing their own clothes

by hand, working in the garden, and cleaning their homes. As we’ve become more sedentary, we’ve seen a rise in heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes.” The World Health Organization reports that physical inactivity constitutes the fourth leading cause of death globally, causing an estimated 3.2 million deaths each year. “The key to changing a sedentary lifestyle is to be mindful of it. By including a few small changes each day, we can improve physical ability, strengthen muscles and promote flexibility,” says Hodges. “Whatever you do, it has to move you; meaning, it’s important to find your motivation.” Hodges offers these three ideas:
Start with where you are now.
Whether it’s walking, riding a bike, swimming, or gentle stretching, it’s all good. Don’t think you must run three miles for it to count. You can start to experience health benefits in as little as 10 to 15 minutes of movement a day. The more you do, increasing slowly and steadily, the healthier you become.
Move throughout the day.
Take mini-breaks often to walk around and stretch. Raise your arms over your head and stand on your tip toes to get a full body stretch. Bend gently at the waist toward each side, then forward. While standing, raise your knees and alternate for several counts. “Movements like these increase blood flow and your heart rate which can help clear mental cobwebs, make you more alert, and help you feel stronger,” says Hodges.
Find your joy.
Your personality can help dictate the type of exercise you prefer. Some people love hiking and adventure cycling; others prefer yoga and Pilates. “Just as we don’t eat one type of food, it’s ok to mix in a variety of exercises,” explains Hodges. “It helps work out different types of muscles, gives the body something new, and helps us stay interested in it.” It’s a good idea to have a simple exercise routine in place for those days when you don’t feel motivated to do much of anything, you can rely on your everyday plan, but when you feel inclined to try out a yoga class or join a friend for a group fitness class, go for it! “Whatever kind of physical activity that is fun and enjoyable for you, get up and go do that! If a certain type of exercise doesn’t sound fun to you, then don’t force yourself to do it,” says Hodges. “The best kind of exercise is the kind you’ll do.” By being mindful of the need to move our bodies, we can take the steps needed (literally) to move throughout the day. Anytime you’re exercising at any level, you’re doing something good for your health.

Transforming Your Home
with
Landscape Renovation by Kristy Como Armand
A well-designed and maintained landscape can last for years, but even if you love your landscape design, time can take a toll. According to Richie Everage, design consultant with Landscape Management, landscapes can fail for a variety of reasons. Insects, disease, and environmental extremes such as floods, droughts, heat, or freezes can destroy a landscape. Factors such as sunlight, drainage, and soil fertility can change over time and negatively impact plants.
“Regardless of the cause, once a landscape has deteriorated to a point where it no longer provides the full benefit of enhancing your property, landscape renovation is an option,” says Everage. He explains that landscape renovation is a relatively new term in the landscape field. “It’s the process of improving and/or modernizing an established landscape, versus starting with a completely blank slate.”

For example, he says there may be elements of your existing landscape that you want to keep. You may like the shape of your beds but want to refresh with new plants and features. Or you may want to enlarge your landscaped space. One of the main benefits of landscape renovation is that it can give your outdoor space a fresh, new look. “Styles and trends change over time, and just as you update different aspects of your home, updates to the landscape can keep your property looking the way you want it to,” says Everage. “This is particularly true if you’ve recently completed a renovation or purchased a new property. A renovation can breathe new life into an outdated or overgrown landscape and really enhance the curb appeal. You can choose to update individual features or overhaul the entire space. You can liven up the space by adding new plants, trees or flowers. You might also want to consider changing the layout of your landscape or adding features like a water fountain or pond." He adds that another benefit of a landscape renovation is to create a low maintenance landscape by removing some of the landscaping features that require regular upkeep and installing hardscape and softscape elements that are low or no-maintenance. “And as homeowners increasingly seek to maximize the potential of their outdoor living spaces, landscape renovation offers a great way to incorporate desired landscape elements in this space for relaxing and entertaining,” says Everage. “By combining aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability, a landscape renovation can turn your outdoor area into a beautiful, functional extension of your home.” If you’re not sure where to start, Everage says his team can work with you to provide options to make your decisions easier. “We’ll create virtual renderings, so you’ll know exactly what to expect. Our goal is to create a plan that makes the most of what you like, removes what is not working, and adds beautiful new elements to enhance your landscape.”

PREPARING TODAY FOR TOMORROW Financial Freedom Is Closer Than You Think by Tori Hebert
A new survey conducted by Forbes Health reported that 38% of respondents want to make improving their finances a top priority in 2024. Paying off debt or developing a budget may seem like daunting tasks, but financial coach Jacqueline Higginbotham says it’s easier than you think. “The easiest way to achieve your financial goals is to start small,” says Higginbotham, owner of JLH Financial Coaching, LLC. “If your goal is to pay off debt, pay off your lowest balance first and work your way up from there.” Creating goals that are achievable and relevant to your specific needs is important to keep you from being discouraged. Each small step is leading you to the next which will result in larger goals coming to fruition. “It’s important to keep in mind that whatever your financial situation is didn’t happen overnight, and it won’t change overnight,” says Higginbotham. “The most important thing is to keep trying. Don’t give up and don’t be hard on yourself if you must extend a goal longer than you wanted to. The progress you make every day will make a difference.” Before you send your money out, make sure you know how much is coming in. Creating a budget is the best way to manage your expenses and make sure you have enough money each month for your lifestyle needs. “Having a budget not only helps you stay on track with your goals, but it can help you find hidden expenses or show you the root of your financial struggles,” she says. Subscription payments can quickly add up and become wasted cash if you are not routinely using those services. Even the smallest expenses can become a problem over time. Higginbotham says budgeting isn’t meant to be restrictive or a punishment, but rather a guide to your savings plan.

Thrive Magazine for Better Living • January 2024
Perhaps the most important thing you can do to gain financial freedom is to create an emergency fund. Having an emergency fund can give you peace of mind when unexpected expenses come up. “Being in Louisiana there is always the possibility for a disaster to strike. Having money put to the side will allow you to cover travel expenses, food and gas without impacting your everyday spending cash.” Consider starting your emergency fund with any extra money you receive. Your income tax return, the percentage increase from a raise, or any money you receive from selling an item are all simple ways to begin building your savings. “If you can immediately put this money to the side, as if you never received it, you won’t be tempted to spend it,” says Higginbotham. “Plus, this will support you to continue working towards your financial goals by keeping your current budget in place.” Just like any goal, having an accountability partner can be beneficial. “We are here to support you and help you learn. It’s up to you to work the plan to make your dreams come true.”

BANK THE BEST WAY by Taylor Trahan Henry Community banks go beyond traditional banking services; they support local businesses with personalized banking services, actively engage with the community to promote financial literacy, and are often economic drivers in the communities they serve. “The key lies in empowering customers and communities with the facts, tools, and resources needed for secure banking,” says Lesley Warren McLamore, vice president of private banking with Red River Bank. “This involves preparing the younger generation for successful money management through programs in schools and workplaces, as well as online initiatives to improve financial access for everyone in the community.” Community banks actively contribute to financial education by volunteering and offering free seminars, credit clinics, and online courses. Red River Bank provides various opportunities for individuals to enhance their financial literacy, covering topics such as identity theft, credit repair, and first-time homebuying. “Choosing a local bank over larger financial institutions offers several advantages,” she says. “Your local banker often has a better understanding of the local market and can provide personalized, one-on-one coaching to meet specific financial goals.”
46
When it comes to setting financial goals for the year ahead, McLamore recommends a three-pronged approach. First, she emphasizes the importance of starting an emergency savings account, especially in regions like Southwest Louisiana that have faced various challenges, from the pandemic to natural disasters. Second, paying down high-interest debts, such as credit cards, remains a top priority. Lastly, McLamore advocates for meeting with a local community banker to discuss and kickstart a retirement savings plan. “If you’re looking to make a plan for the upcoming year and aren’t sure what step 1 is, it is absolutely learning the basics of financial literacy,” says McLamore. “Seek out those community resources to learn all you can.” Through partnerships with initiatives like Bank On, Red River Bank further emphasizes their commitment to expanding banking access for local residents. Accessibility is key! In today’s digital world, community banks are combining the convenience of technology with faceto-face contact, ensuring that customers receive the best of both worlds. To create a solid financial plan for the coming year, there are a few essential steps. “Establishing clear goals, creating a budget, and starting to save, no matter how modest the amount, are crucial,”
Thrive Magazine for Better Living • January 2024
says McLamore. “Additionally, understanding and monitoring your credit score, along with teaching financial literacy to the younger generation, are pivotal components of a comprehensive financial plan.” There has been a lot of discussion on interest rates in the upcoming year. It’s important to understand as interest rates play a significant role in savings and investment strategies. “Getting personalized advice from community bankers who can guide individuals through decisions ranging from paying down credit card debt to investing in competitive certificates of deposit is important,” she says. In times of economic uncertainty, McLamore always recommends a proactive approach. “Understanding one's current financial situation, reviewing bank accounts and statements,
and creating a personal financial statement are essential steps,” she says. “Formulate a plan that ensures your financial goals align with your current circumstances.” As an added tip, she emphasizes the importance of being vigilant against fraud. “Simple yet effective measures include setting card alerts, understanding bank policies for check fraud, and being cautious with online communications,” says McLamore. “Your bank is a valuable ally in the fight against fraud, providing guidance and support to keep individuals and businesses safe.” Your bank isn’t just a building, it’s full of knowledgable staff ready to assist you in establishing or improving financial stability. They are trusted partners in the pursuit of financial well-being for individuals, families, and the community at large.
Your unique needs, expertly anticipated. It’s been taken care of. Your dedicated private banker is always looking ahead to what’s coming next. At home, in your career and across your portfolio, count on us for personalized service that’s always a step ahead.

A YEAR-ROUND GUIDE TO ORGANIZING YOUR FINANCES by Taylor Trahan Henry
The new year is here, and it's the perfect time to implement small habits that make a big difference! These tips can help you in setting the stage for a stress-free tax season come year-end.
Establish a Dedicated Workspace Creating a designated area for handling financial matters is the first step to getting organized. Set up a home office or a specific corner where you can keep all your financial documents, receipts, and important paperwork. Having a centralized space will make it easier to locate necessary items when the time comes to prepare your taxes.
Keep Track of Income and Expenses Maintaining a real-time record of your income and expenses is crucial. Utilize budgeting tools, apps, or even a simple spreadsheet to track your financial transactions. Categorize expenses to streamline the process and make it easier to identify deductible items during tax season.
Utilize Technology Make the most of technology to simplify your financial record-keeping. Use apps or software that allow you to scan and store receipts digitally. Many tools also integrate with your 48

bank accounts and credit cards, automatically categorizing transactions and providing a clear overview of your financial health.
Set Reminders for Important Dates Avoid last-minute rushes and missed deadlines by setting up reminders for key financial dates. Mark your calendar for quarterly tax payments, filing deadlines, and any other financial commitments. Proactively staying on top of these dates will prevent unnecessary stress and ensure you meet all your obligations on time.
Organize Receipts and Documents Keep all relevant receipts, invoices, and financial statements in an organized manner. Use folders or envelopes to separate them by category, making it easier to locate specific documents when needed. Having a structured system in place throughout the year will save you from a frenzied search when tax season arrives.
Maximize Deductions and Credits Stay informed about tax deductions and credits that apply to your situation. This knowledge can help you make informed financial decisions throughout the year. Documenting potential deductions as they arise will save time and ensure you don't
overlook any opportunities to reduce your tax liability.
Regularly Review and Adjust Financial situations can change, so it's essential to regularly review and adjust your financial strategy. Assess your budget, update your records, and ensure that your financial plan aligns with your current circumstances. This proactive approach will make the year-end tax preparation smoother and more accurate.
Consult a Professional If taxes remain a complex and daunting task, consider seeking the assistance of a tax professional. A qualified accountant can provide valuable advice, ensure compliance with tax laws, and help you maximize your deductions. Establishing a relationship with a tax professional early in the year can be beneficial for ongoing guidance. By incorporating these organizational strategies into your routine, you'll not only streamline the tax preparation process but also gain a clearer understanding of your financial well-being throughout the year. Remember, the key to a stress-free tax season is proactive planning and consistent financial management.

NAVIGATING THE INSURANCE LANDSCAPE by Taylor Trahan Henry
It’s not secret to anyone in Southwest Louisiana that the insurance market is tumultuous at the moment. Regardless, everyone has to have it. It’s a necessity and viewing it as a tool in your financial toolbelt can help reframe your mindset on protecting your assets. Local State Farm agent, Jennifer Mabou, says there are ways to ensure you’re in the best shape possible when it comes to your protection portfolio. “Review your deductibles across the board and consider incorporating them into your budget or emergency fund,” says Mabou.

“By doing so, you not only gain a clearer understanding of your financial obligations in the event of a claim but also create a proactive strategy to manage unexpected expenses.” Furthermore, she emphasizes the importance of revisiting policies with your agent regularly. “Ensure your coverages are correct and adequate, and that you’re getting the best pricing available in the market.” This not only safeguards your assets but also ensures that you are not overpaying for coverage you may not need. For those committed to safe driving practices, Mabou suggests exploring Safe Driving telematic programs. “Safe drivers can benefit from better discounts through these programs, providing a win-win scenario for both the policyholder and the insurance company.” Lastly, never underestimate the power of documentation. “Re-inventory your home, apartment, and/or shop with photos or videos,” Mabou advises. “Having a detailed inventory can expedite the claims process and ensure that you receive fair compensation for any losses.” In the midst of a challenging insurance landscape, staying informed is crucial. “Pay attention to the crisis,” Mabou urges. With insurance markets tightening at a rapid pace, it’s essential to be proactive in understanding the factors contributing to the challenges faced by the industry.
So, what’s to blame for the current market? Mabou highlights the rising costs of auto and homeowner claims, the escalating expense of rebuilding homes due to supply chain issues and labor costs, and the surge in Bodily Injury claims from auto accidents. “Be in the know, contact your elected officials, and be aware of the discussions regarding possible solutions.” Amidst the uncertainties, there are proactive steps homeowners can take to fortify their properties. The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program (LFHP), offering grants of up to $10,000 for homeowners to repair or replace their roofs to the FORTIFIED Roof™ standard. “The FORTIFIED Roof™ standard, established by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), strengthens buildings against severe storms, high winds, and wind-driven rain,” explains Mabou. Homeowners who meet eligibility requirements can benefit from discounts offered by most insurance carriers once a Fortified Roof has been installed. For more information about the LFHP and to explore available discounts, homeowners are encouraged to visit www.ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes and consult with their insurance agent. Remember, an informed and proactive approach to insurance can make all the difference in safeguarding your family’s wellbeing.

Fusion Five:
Building the Next Generation of Leaders by Taylor Trahan Henry

Thrive Magazine for Better Living • January 2024
Fusion Five has re-emerged as a launchpad for young professionals. Their solid program of work provides endless opportunities for members to engage with colleagues and the community at large throughout the year. In 2023, the organization piloted what they believe will turn out to be a one of their most successful programs. The Mentor Program, a visionary initiative aimed at fostering the growth and development of the area's rising talents is guided by the unwavering commitment of the Fusion Five board, mentors, and this year’s generous sponsor, Healthy Image Marketing Agency. "We did it in a way that some may call backwards, but it made for the greatest impact," says Athena Gieger, secretary for the Fusion Five board of directors. "We sought out mentees first and asked what they were looking for in a mentor. From there, we were able to choose five mentors and create the small groups." This unique approach, although unconventional, proved to be a stroke of genius. By aligning the mentees and mentors based on shared personal and professional goals, Fusion Five ensured that the mentorship experience was not only impactful but tailored to the individual needs of its members. "As an example, we were able to pair young professionals seeking work-life balance and juggling parenting with someone who really had prioritized that throughout their career,” says Gieger. “We also had some participants who were very entrepreneurial. Who better to pair them with than the talented Eric Avery?" The mentorship program quickly became a living embodiment of Fusion Five's three pillars—civic engagement, networking, and professional growth. It wasn't merely a professional alliance but a holistic connection between seasoned leaders and the ambitious youth, fostering a symbiotic relationship that went beyond traditional mentorship. “I never set out to be in leadership, but it happened naturally over the course of my career,” says Erika Doshier, mentor for the program and the programs manager for the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury Human Services. “I know I wouldn’t be where I am without the people who were placed in my path along the way and I’m honored to have been chosen to pass that down to others.” Take it from program participant Madison Yates, it’s worth it’s weight in gold. “As part of my application, I shared that I’d really love to grow in experience and knowledge in sales,” says Yates. “I ended up in the small group with Matt Young (now with Visit Lake Charles) as my mentor. I truly couldn’t have gotten luckier.” “My experience is unique in that I actually moved jobs as a result of the relationships formed and connections made,” says Yates. “You just never know what putting yourself out there will yield. The resources are oftentimes right there in front of us. An added bonus is that Matt and I have become great friends, too. He’s such a wealth of insight and an inspiration for the work he wants to do in the community.”
The program unfolded over four months, commencing with a spirited meet and greet that set the tone for the collaborative journey ahead. Monthly meetings between mentors and mentees featured structured agendas, focusing on goals, progress, and shared challenges. As the program drew to a close, a celebratory wrap-up breakfast became the canvas for stories, experiences, and invaluable lessons learned. "Fusion Five has really come back in a big way since 2020 rocked Southwest Louisiana’s world," says Gieger. "There’s a lot of exciting growth. One of the things our board of directors is mindful of is that Fusion Five may be the first professional or civic organization that a person joins. If we can provide a valuable membership at this stage, we are creating a solid foundation for our area." In the intricate dance between experienced mentors and eager mentees, the Fusion Five Mentor Program is as a catalyst for change, ensuring that the torch of leadership and knowledge is being passed down to the next generation. The mentorship program didn't just cultivate professionals; it sowed the seeds of a resilient community, grounded in shared experiences and a collective commitment to the future.

Pantone's 2024
Color of the Year:
Peach Fuzz by Taylor Trahan Henry
As we ooh and ahh over the trends of 2024, we’d be remiss not to spotlight Peach Fuzz, a hue that encapsulates the essence of warmth, sophistication, and timeless charm. Chosen by Pantone, the world’s trusted voice on all things color, this hue is sure to be a winning choice anywhere it’s incorporated – from home décor to fashion finds! Celebrating its 25th year in 2024, the Pantone Color of the Year program has grown into a globally iconic cultural touchstone. Originally conceived in 1999, the program aims to explore the intricate relationship between culture and color, showcasing how the unfolding narrative of our global culture is expressed and reflected through the language of color. Over the years, Pantone's Color of the Year has become an influential force, capturing the imagination of designers, brands, and consumers worldwide. This milestone anniversary prompts reflection on the program's legacy, highlighting its profound impact on various industries, from fashion and cosmetics to home furnishings and beyond. The journey to select the Pantone Color of the Year involves a meticulous process led by a team of global color experts at the Pantone Color Institute. Drawing inspiration from diverse sources such as the entertainment industry, art collections, fashion, travel destinations, and socio-economic conditions, the team navigates the vast landscape of influences that shape our cultural zeitgeist. Contrary to common misconceptions, the selection process isn't a singular event but rather an ongoing, fluid conversation among colorattuned experts. These color anthropologists, hailing from diverse design, cultural, and geographical backgrounds, unite their expertise to interpret the global mood and translate it into the language of color. In a world where color is our most powerful communication tool, the Pantone Color of the Year program becomes a catalyst for change. It prompts companies to recognize the impact of color on consumer decisions and encourages individuals to be conscious of the messages

New Year, New Trends by Kerry Andersen
The New Year is always an opportune time to refresh your wardrobe, update your makeup, and try out a new hairstyle. Expressing yourself through hair and makeup is a fun way to try out the latest trends to see what works for you and helps you avoid the dreaded beauty rut. AnnaBeth Guillory is one of the owners at Blush Co. Salon and Beauty Bar in Lake Charles and gave us a rundown of what she’s excited about for hair, makeup, and skin as we head into 2024!
Hair
Updating your hairstyle is the fastest way to refresh your overall look. “My salon team is brushing up on razor cutting techniques as they prepare to give clients tons of layers and texture in the New Year ,” says Guillory. “Popular cuts will be choppy bobs that are a bit more laid-back, dramatic side bangs, and long butterfly layers.” To keep those playful layers bouncy and smooth, Blush stylists swear by Kevin Murphy’s Ever.Bounce – a heat activated blow dry spray that locks out humidity and frizz, seals in body, and just keeps your hair looking good longer. Kevin Murphy’s Body.Mass is another stylist’s secret. “The leave-in conditioning treatment uses the same technology that thickens eyelashes to plump up thinning hair strands with weightless volume without leaving your hair crunchy,” says Guillory. The biggest hair color trend for 2024 will have you seeing red! Specifically, the copper penny shade

of red. This shiny shade has been cropping up on style influencers and Hollywood leading ladies and will be a top trend this year along with other vibrant shades of red. However, if red is too bold for you, bright blondes will also be on trend. As far as hair accessories go, headbands are here to stay with an endless selection of fabrics and styles including leather and shine. Buns and bows round out the hot hair trend list. The classic updo returns but is getting new life adorned with supersize bows. You can easily create this trend by picking up some black velvet ribbon at the craft store, tie your hair up, and unleash a fashionable girly-girl look in a few seconds flat.
Makeup
If you’ve been using the same makeup products for a few years (or longer), it’s a perfect time to clear out your makeup bag and update your look. “First and foremost, no more dramatic and heavy winged eyeliner; leave it in 2016, sis,” says Guillory. The same goes for matte powders. To look fresh in 2024, replace heavy powders with more liquid and cream products. Cream contour and blush will give you glowing (not glittering) radiant makeup looks. Great news for lip-gloss lovers; glossy lips are back too. Pair a neutral lipliner with a sheer gloss for an of-the-moment look. Hybrid lip oils will grow in popularity too in shades like cherry cola for a modern look. “The overall focus now when it comes to makeup is that less is more,” Guillory says. “It’s all about embracing and enhancing your natural beauty instead of covering it up.”
That concept extends to the eyes as well. While laminated brows will continue to be popular in 2024, customers are now asking for more natural looking eyebrow and lash treatments in place of the dramatic brow treatments of recent years.
Skincare
When makeup is light and natural, the skin underneath must be flawless! “If you add one product to your skincare regime it should be salicylic acid,” Guillory says. “The ingredient helps clear and prevent breakouts and reduces the appearance of blackheads. After that, invest in a high quality broad spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from the UVA rays that cause cancer and aging.” She suggests always reading product labels because often generic or lower cost sunscreens don’t offer crucial UVA protection. The term ‘glass skin’ is more than just a catchphrase. Originating in Korea, the phrase refers to the trend of using lots of hydrating products to make skin look like newly polished glass. You can achieve it by using hyaluronic acid serums, niacinamide, and hydrating moisturizers. The Blush team expects to give lots of facials and chemical peels in 2024 too to help their clients put their best face forward in the New Year. Another skin trend growing in popularity is a customized skincare routine with products formulated just for your specific skin concerns. Brands such as Proven and Curology offer an online quiz to determine your specific skincare needs and send you a customized product regime based on the quiz results. Bottom line – fresh healthy skin is in!

The new year is set to unfold as a celebration of personal style, where each woman’s wardrobe serves as her unique canvas for self-expression. Look for accessories to be bold and personalitydefining. From dainty jewels to embellished headbands, nothing is off limits when it comes to this year’s go-to looks. Wardrobe basics will once again take center stage, emphasizing the enduring appeal of solid button-downs and classic crew necks. These timeless pieces prove to be versatile essentials, effortlessly transitioning from the office to casual settings. Paired with wide-leg trousers and the perfect pump, they exude sophistication for a professional look. Alternatively, when matched with jeans and sneakers, they effortlessly embrace a laid-back, casual vibe, reflecting the dynamic nature of modern lifestyles.
Preppy styles will make a notable resurgence, with a sophisticated array of blazers, pleats, and cable-knit sweaters. Footwear, too, embraced the preppy aesthetic, with chunky Mary-Jane-styled shoes making a bold statement. This revival brings back a time where classic elegance met contemporary flair, creating ensembles that seamlessly blended refinement and playfulness.

The echoes of the 90s and early 2000s are moving through the fashion landscape, breathing new life into high-waisted jeans, maxi skirts, and cargo pants. The return of light-washed denim also adds a nostalgic touch, inviting a wave of reminiscent fashion moments. As women embrace these throwback styles, they find themselves navigating the intersection of past and present, crafting looks that are both familiar and refreshingly modern.
Bow accents will continue to be popular, gracing both hairstyles and clothing with a classic and whimsical touch. Whether they adorn a chic updo or serving as a charming embellishment on sweaters, bows are the epitome of timeless femininity. This playful addition showcases how even the smallest details can make a significant impact.
No matter which fashion trend you choose to embrace, one theme cuts all the way through – making style your own will always be a win. Gone are the days when everyone in attendance at a particular event was in the same style of clothing, just a different color. Now, whether it’s office or date night, cocktail or casual, you can spot a personality from a mile away.

Let's
Kick It by Taylor Trahan Henry
Joel Moore, a Bethal Christian High School student, has launched his hobby after winning the SEED Center SWLA Business Pitch Competition, High School Division. The competition, known for propelling aspiring entrepreneurs into the business world, provided Joel with the opportunity to turn his passion for shoe customization into a thriving business. The seeds of Joel’s venture were planted when he started customizing his own shoes. The unique designs and personalized touch caught the attention of friends and family, who soon began requesting his creative flair for their footwear. What began as a personal hobby transformed into a business idea that Joel presented at the SEED Center competition. Essentially, Joel’s business model is simple yet ingenious – bring him a white sneaker, and he can turn it into a personalized work of art. His craftsmanship and attention to detail have garnered attention primarily through word of mouth, a testament to the quality and creativity he injects into each pair. Winning the SEED Center competition provided Joel with the financial boost he needed to take his business to the next level. The $5,000 prize allowed him to invest in high-quality equipment and supplies, elevating the overall quality of his work and increasing efficiency in the customization process. Joel’s entrepreneurial spirit doesn’t stop with shoe customization. He envisions himself owning multiple businesses in the future, with a particular dream of designing shoes for NBA players, especially his favorite, Jayson Tatum. “My dream is to see my designs on the court, making an impact in the world of sports,” Joel enthusiastically shares. For Joel, the joy of his business lies not just in the financial success but in the creative process itself. “I really enjoy getting creative and bringing someone’s vision to life through custom shoes,” he says. Each pair becomes a canvas for artistic expression, allowing him to connect with his customers on a personal level. Joel Moore’s story is a testament to the power of combining passion with entrepreneurship. From a high school student with a knack for customization to a budding business owner, Joel’s journey showcases the potential that young, creative minds can unleash when given the right platform. As Joel continues to leave his mark on the local fashion scene, one customized pair of sneakers at a time, the community eagerly anticipates where his entrepreneurial spirit will take him next.
