Mind & Body TOP DOCS Toughest Cases

In this month’s special section, Top Docs, we'll introduce you to dedicated, local physicians who are not only masters of their craft but also compassionate listeners, empathetic healers, and champions of hope. They've chosen a path filled with challenges, triumphs, and moments of profound impact.

Southwest Louisiana is a hub for medical innovation, and our physicians are at the forefront of these advancements. From cutting-edge treatments to groundbreaking research, they're rewriting the narrative of healthcare in our region. Thrive captured their commitment to improving lives, one patient at a time.

What truly sets these stories apart are the patients themselves – individuals who have faced extraordinary circumstances and emerged stronger, often with the guidance and expertise of these remarkable physicians. Each patient has a story to tell, one that serves as a testament to the spirit of our community.

Whether it's a challenging case that pushed the boundaries of medical knowledge or a heartwarming tale of recovery against all odds, you'll find inspiration in each. These stories remind us that healthcare is not just about treating ailments; it's about restoring hope, rekindling resilience, and reimagining what's possible.

Dr. Kamran Shahid, MD

Dr. Shahid received his undergraduate and medical degree from Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan. Following this, he completed his internship and residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (Shreveport). He also completed his fellowship in hematology and oncology at the same location.

Dr. Shahid joined Ochsner in July 2020; he has been practicing medicine since 2016. Dr. Shahid came to Ochsner from the University of Texas Health North Campus Tyler - MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he was an assistant professor of hematology and oncology, an Oncology Survivorship Champion Physician representing medical oncology and a principal investigator for a wide variety of research trials. He has a special interest in treating solid tumors and hematological malignancies.

Dr. Kamran Shahid Ochsner CHRISTUS Cancer Center

In the realm of medical oncology, where every diagnosis carries profound weight and each treatment decision can change a life, Dr. Kamran Shahid excels. For Dr. Shahid, it's not just about administering chemotherapy; it's about weaving compassion into every thread of care.

Dr. Shahid, specializing in medical oncology with expertise in treating all types of cancers, shares a story that is familiar for many. It's a story that touched hearts and brought tears of joy to a grieving family.

The story begins with a 65-year-old patient who had traveled a long and painful road. He had recently lost his beloved wife. In the depths of his grief, he found himself in a role he had never anticipated, that of a sole caregiver for his 85-year-old mother. A daunting task, made even more challenging by his own health battle with cancer.

Seeking the best possible care, the patient had previously turned to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. There, he was prescribed a specific chemotherapy regimen that was not readily available in Lake Charles. This posed a significant dilemma - continue to travel to Houston for treatment, separated from his aging mother, or explore alternatives closer to home.

Enter Dr. Shahid, a physician known for his dedication to his patients' well-being. Driven by a deep sense of compassion, he reached out to the patient's primary oncologist in Houston, leveraging his prior affiliation to facilitate a remarkable solution. The goal was clear: to make this crucial chemotherapy available right here in Lake Charles, sparing the patient from the taxing journeys to Houston and allowing him to remain by his mother's side.

With determination and a heart full of empathy, Dr. Shahid coordinated the intricate details of this complex endeavor. This included training the nurse practitioners at his practice, ensuring they were well-prepared to handle the infusion process and monitor for potential side effects that came with this specialized treatment.

The result? A remarkable success story that transcends medical boundaries. The patient could now spend precious time with his aging mother, providing her the comfort and care she deserved. The relief, gratitude, and sheer joy emanating from their shared moments cannot be measured, Dr. Shahid remarked. It's the profound impact of a compassionate physician who made the impossible, possible.

Niazy Selim

Imagine the anxiety of facing a daunting GI surgery, grappling with the decision, and seeking a second opinion to alleviate your doubts. This was the crossroads a patient faced when they walked into Dr. Selim's office. Uncertain and fearful, they explored other options, even venturing to the renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center. However, it was Dr. Selim's compassionate approach and expertise that ultimately won their heart. His commitment to performing the procedure laparoscopically, when others insisted on an open surgery, marked the beginning of a profound bond.

In the patient's own words, "Dr. Selim made me comfortable when I needed it most." This trust was the foundation upon which a life-changing surgery was built. This trust extends beyond the operating room, with the patient valuing Dr. Selim's opinion above all else when it comes to medical decisions for their family.

But Dr. Selim's impact doesn't stop at the borders of our community. A case never before attempted here was conquered by Dr. Selim's expertise. He also played a pivotal role in changing the life of a patient from Baton Rouge who had spent years unable to lay down due to a mysterious condition. She affectionately calls him her savior, a title he wears with humility.

For those who have faced the dire consequences of bariatric surgeries gone wrong, Dr. Selim is a lifeline. He has brought healing and hope to patients whose lives were hanging in the balance, showcasing his unwavering commitment to their well-being.

Dr. Niazy Selim is not just a remarkable surgeon; he is a beacon of excellence in our community. With a Medical Degree earned in Egypt in 1986, he brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to Lake Charles when he arrived in November 2015. Dr. Selim introduced advanced surgical techniques, including robotics, eliminating the need for patients to travel to distant medical hubs. Both patients and hospitals quickly realized the value of his vast experience and exceptional results.

Currently serving as the Chief of Surgery at Lake Area Christus Hospital, Dr. Selim's dedication to his profession is further exemplified through his involvement in multiple medical committees. He tirelessly seeks to improve the quality of surgical care in our community and beyond.

Beyond his hospital endeavors, Dr. Selim is the sole owner of a multispecialty Ambulatory Surgery Center right here in Lake Charles. It's a testament to his commitment to providing the best surgical options in Southwest Louisiana. The center boasts state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, but what truly sets it apart is the personal touch. Patients are not just numbers; they experience genuine care from a staff that goes above and beyond to guide them on their journey to recovery. In our corner of the world, where trust is cherished, Dr. Niazy Selim is a name synonymous with compassion, expertise, and unwavering dedication to the health and well-being of our community.

Dr. Richard Shimer, general surgeon, serves as the trauma medical director at Memorial Hospital, the area’s only designated Level III Trauma Center. He specializes in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, endoscopy, and trauma surgeries.

Memorial’s Trauma Center treats over 1,600 trauma patients each year, and 63% of those are considered a Level I or II, requiring extensive care. Because of the extraordinary teamwork and coordinated care of talented physicians, like Dr. Shimer, the survival rate of trauma patients treated at Memorial is 98%.

“As a trauma surgeon, I encounter the most severe injuries that come through our doors. It’s a difficult job, but one that brings me a lot of satisfaction,” says Dr. Shimer.

In his line of work, many cases have been impactful or notable, but one that comes to mind when reflecting on the toughest cases actually involves two patients. Upon arrival, one after the other, each was afflicted with life-threatening gunshot wounds.

“When it comes to trauma, time is of the essence. The goal is to get patients to definitive care within 60 minutes, or during ‘The Golden Hour of Trauma’ for the best outcomes,” explains Dr. Shimer. Fortunately, in this particular situation, both patients arrived in time to be treated within the “Golden Hour.”

The patients were both in critical condition, and Dr. Shimer was fully aware of the challenge that he, and the care team, were about to face. The possibility of death began to loom over them. Even though the situation was intensely complex, “I knew the team had what it takes to deliver the best outcome possible for these patients and their families,” recalls Dr. Shimer.

As the emergency staff rushed to assess the patients, other physicians and staff arrived. Their care involved a collaborative approach between the emergency department staff and physicians, surgeons, operating room staff, ICU (Intensive Care Unit) staff, orthopedics, neurosurgery, pulmonology, and countless other essential hospital departments.

“Both patients underwent multiple surgeries and spent a significant amount of time in the Intensive Care Unit. It was uncertain, at times, whether their injuries would be too much for their bodies to recover,” recalls Dr. Shimer.

In the end, both patients involved lived but have a hard road to recovery. Months of rehabilitation services are to follow.

“I am satisfied knowing that our team is providing a level of readiness that is unique to Memorial and ensuring the best care possible in a patient’s time of need. Because of this their families have another day with their loved ones,” recalls Dr. Shimer.

A Legacy of Caring for the Community

West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital Celebrates 70 Years of Service

In the 1940s and 50s, Sulphur grew rapidly thanks to the addition of several large industries that were contributing to the manufacturing and fuel needs during WWII and the post-war boom. These companies relocated hundreds of employees and their families from across the country; that, along with the natural progress of a vibrant city, enhanced the growth of Sulphur and surrounding areas.

With the growing number of families came the need for quality healthcare in the community where they lived and worked. “Civic leaders, physicians and dentists realized the desperate need for a healthcare facility west of the Calcasieu River and took the necessary action to bring the need to reality,” explained Frank Gayle, administrator of West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital from 1963 – 1991, in a hospital newsletter published in 1978.

On August 19, 1953, West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital (WCCH) was established — a 50-bed hospital dedicated to serving the healthcare needs of West Calcasieu and Cameron parishes. As a testament to the need of the hospital, the first baby was born two days later.

The architectural design of the original hospital was progressive enough to draw attention from Architectural Record, a national publication. WCCH was named one of the five best designed hospitals in 1953 — “an exceptionally good example of planning for function.”

From the beginning, the strength of WCCH has been its physicians, leaders and employees. Their camaraderie and vision have created a strong foundation. “Beyond the brick, mortar and equipment of the hospital buildings, the health services that it offers are directly related to the employees of the hospital,” explained Gayle. “We have been, over the years, blessed with dedicated, hardworking people who were sincerely interested in providing the finest care possible.”

“Patient care has always been the driving force of growth and advancements at WCCH,” says Dr. Walter P. Ledet, Jr., general surgeon and member of the WCCH medical staff since 1975. “Since the beginning, the medical staff and hospital administration have approached patient care with a collaborative spirit, which in turn has created a positive synergy that benefits our community.” The medical staff has grown from 12 members to nearly 350 members today, providing access to a wide array of healthcare services.

The science of medicine is ever-evolving, and as new technologies are created, more precise diagnostic and surgical capabilities and treatments become available. Throughout its 70 years, WCCH has continually invested in state-of-the art technology, to ensure our community has access to the latest in medical advancements here at home.

The COVID-19 pandemic tested everyone from patients to physicians during 2020 and beyond. While the times were challenging, the resiliency of the WCCH team and the community was evident. Supportive procedures were implemented to keep patients, employees and the community as healthy as possible and to comply with governmental mandates.

added X-ray service, lab and emergency room along with 25 beds for a total of 75 beds; obtained accreditation by Joint Commission for Accreditation of Hospitals and American Dental Association; received outstanding service recognition for care provided in the aftermath of Hurricane Audrey.

40 patient beds were added, bringing the total to 115 beds; established a medical library for physician use; installed the area’s first inhalation therapy department and intensive coronary care unit; began pharmacy operations.

established WCCH Ambulance Service; completed Phase I expansion project: new three-story patient tower facing Cypress Street.

began orthopaedic service line; dedicated Phase II expansion project: clinical and anatomical lab, new cafeteria, medical records, computer services department and general business office space; opened Home Health Agency, Child Development Center and Vinton Medical Center.

cardiology services began; opened Dynamic Dimensions Fitness Centers in Sulphur and Moss Bluff, Hackberry Rural Health Center and Therapeutic Riding Center; WCCH Foundation was established; cardiac services were expanded.

new annex completed establishing Stelly Lane entrance and renovated emergency department; surgical suites added; APTC center formed; Sallye Jean Toniette, MD Women’s Center of WCCH opened; continued to care for the community during aftermath of Hurricane Rita; Johnson Bayou Rural Health Center and Sulphur Diagnostic Center opened.

expansion continued with the opening of new admissions, radiology, ICU, cath lab, respiratory therapy and APTC areas; established OBG-1 of WCCH and Calcasieu Family Physicians of WCCH; opened Westlake Diagnostic Center and ENT Associates of WCCH.

responded to needs of community during COVID-19 pandemic; continual care provided to community during Hurricanes Laura and Delta; opened Community Health Center and Calcasieu Family Physicians – Carlyss clinic; unveiled new, state-of-the-art cath lab technology.

The strength of the community was also tested through natural disasters in 2020 — Hurricanes Laura and Delta — and continuing in 2021 — Winter Storm Uri and the 1000-years’ flood. “During some of the hospital’s most challenging times, we remained confident in the future because of the resiliency, dedication and focus of our physicians and team members,” says Janie Frugé, CEO of WCCH. “We’ve proven that by working together, we can overcome anything.”

Providing care beyond the hospital walls is a cornerstone of a healthy community. WCCH has continuously brought healthcare to the residents of rural areas of West Calcasieu and Cameron parishes through the establishment of the Hackberry Rural Health Center, Johnson Bayou Rural Health Center and Vinton Medical Clinic. These locations provide general healthcare for minor and major illnesses, physicals, preventive education and screening along with the peace of mind that comes with knowing that competent medical care is available in one’s community.

“We continuously expand our events and classes, from cooking demonstrations and grocery store tours, to support groups and health fairs, to bring health and wellness directly to our community, in a format that empowers residents to lead healthier lives,” explains Matthew Welsh, chief marketing and community impact officer.

The Community Health Center of WCCH (CHC), which opened in Sulphur in 2021, embodies this commitment, ensuring every member of the community has access to exceptional healthcare. The CHC is available to all patients, including the medically underserved and uninsured, and offers primary care, walk-ins, general surgery, gynecological and wound care services.

“Care and community are at the core of our organization; they are two pillars that guide our growth and operational improvement measures,” explains Frugé. “Through recent achievements – the opening of clinics,

expansion of services, and implementation of new equipment and treatments — we remember our first mission, which is to treat each patient with the utmost care and dignity. It is our honor to provide this care and we do not take it lightly. It’s thanks to our physicians, clinical team and every team member we’ve had that we’ve been able to do this for 70 years, and I look forward to many more years of service. We remain grateful for the commitment of our physicians; they are our lifeline and the heart of our organization.”

WCCH embodies all that makes Southwest Louisiana a thriving region: compassion, hard work, and hope for the future. Thanks to visionary leadership, steadfast fiscal responsibility, and the support of the community, WCCH will continue to provide an unsurpassed tradition of caring every moment, every day.

A Tail-Waggin' Good Time

Grab your party hat and party attire because everyone loves a birthday party, your family’s four-legged companion included! According to Forbes, in 2023, 66 percent of United States households (86.9 million homes) own a pet. Additionally, 85 percent of dog owners and 76 percent of cat owners consider their pets to be a member of the family. It makes sense then, that in recent years, pet parties, specifically doggy birthday parties have risen in popularity.

Local adventure and entertainment complex, Lake Area Adventures is taking their birthday party offerings to a completely new level with their latest roll out of Doggy Birthday Parties.

A pet-friendly hang out on any given day, the idea to offer Doggy Birthday Parties was inspired by the team’s love for dogs and demand from the community.

“Our Lake Area Adventures team is filled with dog lovers, so we already cater to four-legged family members with our pet-friendly patio, special ‘For the Puppers’ menu and Chef Amanda Cusey’s Buddy’s Brew,” says Tim Robles, General Manager, Operator and Co-owner of Lake Area Adventures. “We began getting questions about Doggy Birthday Parties and since we already offer kids’ birthday parties; it was an easy decision to make these canine celebrations an offering.”

The first Doggy Birthday Party was held in mid-August and was a smashing success.

“Since we booked the first Doggy Birthday Party last month, we have gotten a lot of interest in future bookings,” adds Robles. “We expect these bookings to really ramp up in the coming months.”

So how exactly does a Doggy Birthday Party work? Get your invitations ready and plan for the best doggy playdate ever, because this party is designed for 10 furry friends!

“We fence off a portion of our very large outdoor covered patio and it’s off to the races for our dog friends to run around and play during their party,” Robles explains. “The party package includes a doggy pool, decorated table, two pitchers of Buddy’s Brew, doggy gift bags which include party toys and dehydrated veggie bites, a Lake Area Adventures bandana for the birthday girl or boy and pupcakes for all our doggy participants.”

This new offering for guests fits in nicely with Lake Area Adventures overall mission of providing entertainment for the entire family according to Robles.

“Our goal is to provide adventure for every member of the family and we know that pets are important family members.”

In addition to serving up adventure for all members of the family, these parties also meet another critically important goal for Lake Area Adventures.

“We strive to always being open to requests and feedback from our guests and the community-at-large,” says Robles. “Offering Doggy Birthday Parties was something our guests

requested and it was easy to put in place. We are so happy to say we did it!” If a pet of the feline persuasion is more your style, they are welcome at Lake Area Adventures, too!

“Our patio is always pet-friendly, but outside of a booked party with its own space, a leash is required,” adds Robles.

Lake Area Adventures is located at 1337 Country Club Road in Lake Charles.

In addition to parties and events, the family-friendly venue offers boat and kayak rentals and tours. Bounce houses are also available for rent. The adventure complex features an airpark, rock-climbing walls, gamers lounge, Omni arena, ropes course and aquatics center.

The venue is also home to The Terrace Restaurant, featuring award-winning Chef Amanda Cusey.

JUST IMAGINE SWLA HOUSING IN THE HEART OF THE CITY

When Lake Charles was awarded the $40 Million Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant this summer to redevelop Lloyd Oaks and the Mid City neighborhood, it was a gamechanger for the entire city. In order to obtain the grant, the Lake Charles Housing Authority and the City of Lake Charles worked with the Community Foundation, Mid City Transformation Committee members from Just Imagine SWLA, the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, and community advocates to prepare the complex and competitive grant process that would transform the area immediately surrounding the Prien Lake Mall. Through this grant, a revitalized, more vibrant and diverse space for housing in the heart of the city will come to fruition due to the hard work of everyone who champions the future of Lake Charles.

“Having safe, attainable housing for residents is a priority of the City of Lake Charles. It is because of a multi-layered partnership that we have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revitalize and transform this neighborhood in a way that is positive for all. The redevelopment will create expanded economic and quality of life opportunities, which will in turn create additional benefits for the entire City,” said Mayor Hunter of the City of Lake Charles.

HRI Communities, LLC (HRI) and Integrand will be the lead developers of the housing component of the Mid City neighborhood transformation. Since Hurricanes Laura and Delta, the Lloyd Oaks housing community has remained in disrepair. The housing initiative will bring approximately 550 high-quality, safe, well-managed mixed-income units while providing a 1 for 1 replacement of the current 240-distressed units. The community will also include community spaces, a fitness center, parks and welcoming green spaces, access to quality schools, economic hubs with commercial activity, and added public safety measures.

The people component of the Mid City neighborhood transformation will be led by Urban Strategies, Inc. (USI), who specializes in creating successful and thriving neighborhoods that include equitable pathways to social and economic mobility for families. USI was founded in 1978 and is a leader in the field of community development nationwide. USI works with housing authorities, city government officials, property managers, developers, and stakeholders to support neighborhood conditions and human service needs.

“Our role in the Mid City Transformation

CNI will be to support the children, families, and greater community through strategic community engagement, results driven planning and implementation, and equitable collaboration to support the Lloyd Oaks/ Dixie Drive transformation, as well as being a critical partner for the neighborhood strategies through our Family Supportive Services,” said Erika Wilson, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for USI.

As an example of success in Louisiana, USI and HRI previously partnered in New Orleans on the Iberville/Treme Choice Neighborhood to implement economic, education, health, and community engagement strategies for residents. HRI and USI collaborated with federal housing officials and the greater community to implement a reinvented housing community without losing the context and connection to the city’s second-to-none culture. The strategies implemented resulted in strengthening access to health care for uninsured and underinsured residents and coordinating health and wellness workshops. Notable results include: 90+% of adult residents now have health insurance; 93% of youth are engaged in enrichment programs; 922 mixed income units created across the New Orleans portfolio, and the average annual

Fall Hair Trends to Love in 2023

Ah, the fall. Time to dig out our sweaters and cute boots, swap our bright summer colors for moodier hues, and yes, think about hair trends. Summer can be tough on hair – especially in the South between the heat, chlorine, salt water, and sun –and you might be thinking a refresh is due. Why not change when the leaves are doing the same, right?

For fall hair, it’s all about lower maintenance and warmer hues. Sun-bleached hair can be low-lighted and broken up to give it more dimension. Dump the high pony and try new silhouettes or bangs, or just start all over and cut that summer hair off.

Three rising stylists located in Lake Charles’ Revive Salon Studios weigh in on some of the biggest fall hair trends that will give you all the inspiration you need to make a beautiful change.

Balayage

What’s balayage you say?

Pronounced BAH-LEE-AHGE, balayage is a French word meaning sweeping, as in to sweep on a hair lightener to create highlights. Balayage is the technique of free-hand painting highlights onto the hair, creating a soft and natural gradation of lightness towards the ends. This natural-looking highlighting technique is not just for blondes but is used on all shades of hair to add soft, sun kissed dimension.

“I am creating countless balayage options for clients, ranging from fashion colors to a nice caramel color to any type of blonde,” says Cierra Aguillard, stylist at CA Hair Studios. “It’s great way to introduce a new color into your hair without having a solid look.”

Blondes and Brondes

Not everyone is looking to warm their hair color totally up in those cool months. Blondes can try a more rooted look and add a few lowlights to break up heavy blonde tones and give their color dimension. “Blonde can be really fun in the fall,” says Cierra. “It’s also the perfect time for strawberry blonde to make an entrance.”

Then there are the brondes- a mix of brunette and blonde. This summer into fall trend favored by Jennifer Lopez is nearly the most universal shade out there—for brunettes who want to go brighter, blondes who want to look less summery, and

first-timers who are a little skeptical about jumping in with both feet, Cierra says it's a perfectly low-commitment color for anyone looking to switch things up.

Mushroom Brown

This craze has been spotted on celebrities including Kate Middleton and Angelina Jolie. Quite literally, the hue favors the ashy grey-brown tint of the popular portobello mushroom. Prettier than it sounds, this hairstyle is a step between brunette and blonde with various shades of silver highlights that complement a smoky, subtle, and understated brown that can easily be achieved via balayage with a toner.

“As an ashy brown color, mushroom brown hair complements skin types with warmer undertones,” says Cierra. “Mushroom brown can act as a neutral hue or lean towards the cooler side when combined with gray undertones.” Adjusting mushroom brown hair to include more highlights or earthy tones depends on your eye color and skin tone.

Layers and Fringe

Layering is one of the 2023 fall trends that industry leaders continue to stand by. “Layers are important as they can debulk a style without losing length,” says Courtney Andrepont of Revive. “I’m a visual cutter who loves adding texture while dry cutting in layers.” Growing up with two grandparents that were both artists, Courtney attributes her upbringing as the inspiration needed to creatively break the rules when she designs a layered cut.

The "butterfly cut" is currently high in demand. This style produces face framing layers that create that 90s bombshell supermodel look rocked back in the day by both Cindy Crawford and Tyra Banks. A butterfly cut builds volume and seamlessly blends layers into an overall look that doesn't compromise length. Also popular are internal layers that build volume throughout the interior and remove excess bulk. This undone look – otherwise casually cool - moves with an airy texture that looks great air-dried, waved or straight.

Last, but not least, there’s the fringe, or bangs. “It’s a great time of the year

24 Thrive Magazine for Better Living • September 2023

to entertain this look with the weather cooling down,” says Courtney. “Bangs and a sweaty brow do not get along great in those sweltering summer months.” Among the most requested type of fringe stylists are currently seeing are curtain bangs. These long eye swept bangs are a style that every face shape and every hair texture can have.

Autumnal Hues

When people think of the word fall, they think of warm colors like brown, red, orange, yellow. It’s a good transition from spring and summer colors that are light and bright, to warmer shades for those autumn months.

“Clients are requesting warmer color changes to reflect any shade of brown, copper or gold that deepen the color they have on their hair now,” says Abby Hayes, stylist at Studio H. “For example, if they have brown hair, a warmer chocolate brown or even a copper or cinnamon are being asked for.”

While some of these color changes can

be drastic, Abby suggests if you’re interested in trying one out, to go for a semi/demi permanent hair color first. This hair color only lasts 6-8 weeks, depending on how often you wash your hair. It’s great for clients wanting to test the waters without a permanent commitment.

As you can see from these experts, there are plenty of ways to integrate different trends into any hair style. Fall is a fun time to try new things. After all, hair is the one accessory you can’t take off!

As we prepare for the sweltering days of summer to wane, it’s time to shift our focus towards preparing our wardrobes for the cooler, crisper days of autumn. In Louisiana, where the transition from hot to cool can sometimes be slow, building a versatile transitional wardrobe is essential. Whether you’re enjoying a college football game or sipping on a pumpkin spice latte, our guide will help you curate the perfect collection of pieces to embrace the upcoming season in style. Local boutiques and department stores will soon begin to bring out fall merchandise. So, now is the perfect time to start shopping for those pieces that will be essential through fall and winter!

Transitional & Timeless Keys for Your Fall Wardrobe

Boots

A staple for any fall wardrobe, a good pair of boots can instantly elevate your look. Opt for ankle boots or midcalf boots in neutral shades like taupe, olive, or black. These can easily be paired with dresses, jeans, or even shorts as you navigate the fluctuating temperatures. Look for styles with breathable linings to keep your feet comfortable.

Denim

Jeans are a year-round wardrobe essential, but for fall, consider adding a pair of versatile high-rise or straightleg jeans to your collection. These styles are both comfortable and trendy, and they can be worn with virtually any type of footwear, from sneakers to ankle boots. A medium wash will make the perfect shade for shifting from warm to cool.

Sweaters

Lightweight sweaters are the MVPs of transitional dressing. Choose cozy knits in materials like cotton or linen for those warmer days and chilly evenings. Neutrals like camel, cream, and heather gray are not only timeless but also easy to mix and match with your existing wardrobe. A classic crewneck or V-neck sweater can be layered over a simple tee and paired with denim or skirts for an effortlessly chic look.

Basics and Layering

Basic pieces are the building blocks of any wardrobe. Stock up on quality t-shirts and long-sleeve tees in a variety of colors. These can be layered under cardigans, blazers, or worn on their own as the temperature fluctuates. Look for breathable, natural fabrics to stay comfortable.

Fashion Sneakers

The recent popularity of fashion sneakers isn’t dwindling anytime soon. For those days when you’re on the go, a pair of fashion-forward sneakers is a must. White or neutral-toned sneakers with subtle detailing give a chic yet casual look. They pair effortlessly with jeans, dresses, and skirts, making them a must-have for your closet.

Outerwear

While it might not be time to break out the heavy coats just yet, investing in a lightweight jacket or trench coat is a smart move. Look for styles in classic colors like beige or navy that you can layer over your sweaters and dresses as the weather cools down.

The key to a successful transitional wardrobe is versatility; pieces that can be mixed and matched effortlessly, allowing you to adapt to the ever-changing weather. Layering is your best friend during this time of year, too. We’re all familiar with those fall mornings that quickly turn to summertime by lunch. So, don’t be afraid to experiment with different combinations to create unique and stylish looks. By building your wardrobe with these essential pieces, you’ll be well-prepared to navigate the changing seasons in style.

The history of gaming in Louisiana is a tale of economic evolution, cultural convergence, and legislative transformation. From the early days of riverboat gambling to the emergence of vibrant casino resorts, Louisiana's gaming industry has undergone a remarkable journey.

The origins of gaming in Louisiana can be traced back to the 18th century when French settlers brought their penchant for games of chance to the region. While informal gambling activities were prevalent, it wasn't until the 19th century that a more structured form of gambling emerged. Steam-powered paddlewheel boats, carrying travelers along the Mississippi River, often became hubs for gambling, and the riverboat casino concept was born.

The real game-changer for Louisiana's gaming industry occurred in 1993 when the legislature approved land-based casinos, allowing operators to establish large-scale casino resorts beyond the

Additionally, Louisiana's unique cultural heritage played a significant role in shaping its gaming industry. The state's rich history, lively music, and vibrant cuisine became integral components of the casino experience, making it distinct from other gaming destinations. In recent years, gaming has continued to evolve in Louisiana, with the introduction of sports betting and online gaming, keeping the state at the forefront of the industry's developments.

Only one person, Ronnie Johns, in the state’s history has chaired both the state’s Lottery Corporation Board and the Gaming Control Board. A well-respected state legislator from Southwest Louisiana, Johns served 12 years as a Representative, and nine years as a Senator before accepting the appointment in 2021 from Governor John Bel Edwards to become Chaiman of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board. The State Gaming Control Board serves as the regulatory body for the state’s riverboat licenses, racetracks, video poker the land-based casino in New Orleans, and now, sports betting. Johns called SWLA home for nearly 40 years before he and his wife Michelle recently moved to Lafayette. He took the helm of the Control Board just after sports betting was approved by voters in 55 of the state’s 64 parishes. Now two years into his new leadership role, Johns talked with Thrive about the gaming industry in Louisiana.

What factors influenced your decision to accept the appointment as the Chairman of the Louisiana State Gaming Control Board? There were a number of factors that helped me make such a hard decision. I was particularly close to former Chairman Ronnie Jones and he encouraged me to pursue the job as he and I had worked on a number of pieces of legislation that completely modernized the gaming industry. I had passed legislation in 2018 that allowed the old legacy riverboats to become land-based operations, and I really wanted to be a part of the transition process. Additionally, I recognized that this position absolutely requires the highest level of integrity and I honestly felt I could bring that to the table, while continuing to serve the state in a meaningful way.

How did your time in the state legislature prepare you for the chairman position?

The 22 years I spent in the legislature has proven to be invaluable to me and the regulatory process. I fully understood going in what it meant to not only regulate the gaming industry, but to also be able to sit down and listen to their legitimate business concerns and work with them in a fair, but consistent manner. Also, as the first ever former legislator to chair this board, I had a complete understanding of the legislative process and how to work with legislators to draft good and meaningful legislation. We have not always agreed on everything, but they know my door is open to them and they will get a fair answer.

first person with Ronnie

How challenging was the process of developing Sports Betting regulations before it could begin?

In 2020, we passed legislation calling for a statewide referendum on Sports Betting. In the 2021 session, which ended in June of that year, we passed the final version of how it would work. A month later, I resigned from the Senate and accepted the job as regulator over all aspects of gaming. My first and most important order of business was to implement a Sports Betting format for our state. Let me say, it was not easy. So many people thought we’d just turn on a switch and sports betting would commence. It was complicated going through all of the legal aspects and what could be done and what could not be done. We had to figure out a way to prevent those living in the nine “no” parishes from betting on their mobile devices while in the confines of those parishes. Incredible technology makes this possible. We had to work with betting platforms to ensure no one under 21 could get into the system, as well as recognizing problem gambling. A lot of people put in long hours over a stretch of mere months to get this done, and while some people were pushing us to roll it out, we were patient and did it the right way. I’m very proud of how we did it and to see very few issues with the finished product.

What has been most challenging about this position?

Learning that gaming law is completely different from civil or criminal law. That’s why one of the first things I did was hire an outstanding in-house attorney who works directly with me. The Attorney General’s office also has a Gaming Division with approximately 20 attorneys who do nothing but gaming work. They have all taught me a lot. Another challenge was stepping back completely from all political activity. I am prohibited by law from this. I cannot publicly support any candidate, contribute to campaigns, or even attend any kind of political function. After giving a total of over 30 years to public service, this has been a big change, but is absolutely necessary to protect the regulatory process.

Did anything surprise you about the position?

Yes, the amount of people it takes to regulate the gaming industry. There are 16 casinos, four racetrack casinos, over 200 video poker truck stops, and sports betting in our state. In addition to the team at the Attorney General’s office, I have a staff of five and the State Police Gaming Division has over 200 troopers and a staff of civilians who do nothing but gamingrelated work. It takes a lot of people and effort on a daily basis to keep the industry compliant and running the way it should.

What is a typical work week like for you?

This is a full-time position and my office is in Baton Rouge in the State Police compound. Every employee of every gaming entity in the state has to hold a gaming license, and we have to sign off on every application approved by the State Police. The vendors who do work or supply the gaming entities have to hold a license – about 30,000 to 35,000 licenses that are valid at any one time. We also have to approve administrative actions against those license holders who violate our laws or rules. It’s our responsibility to approve the licensing of all of the casinos and video poker truck stops, as well as the bars and restaurants who have the machines. There are over 12,000 video poker machines in operation on any given day. Every day I am working with all of the support staff who make this huge industry work. The gaming Industry is the most regulated industry in our state, and it is my job to see that is done fairly and efficiently.

What insight regarding the gaming industry’s role in the state’s economy can you give us, specifically the Southwest Louisiana gaming market?

The gaming industry statewide is now the leading source of private industry revenue for the state budget. It brings in over $1 billion a year in state revenue. That includes the Lottery, which I don’t regulate. For comparison, oil and gas was the top source of private industry revenue for many years Today it brings in less than $600 million a year. The revenue for gaming does not include local gaming taxes that the casinos pay, which is in the multiple of millions; nor does it include the sales taxes it generates, huge property taxes, and the over 30 thousand jobs it creates. So, the impact to our state is huge. The SWLA market absolutely dominates the industry in our state. The three casinos and one racetrack here do far more than any other market in the state. The SWLA market far outpaces the New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport/Bossier market and the reason is simple: Texas customers coming into the destination properties that have been built. The investment in SWLA is in the billions, and it’s not just the gaming aspect that drives this. It’s the amenities such as restaurants, pools areas, spas, golf courses, and more that draw people in. That is one reason why our Board will not allow a casino to operate without some degree of amenities to add to the draw of customers.

Is there anything you wish people would understand about the gaming industry in our state that you feel they don’t?

This is an interesting question because since I became Chairman, I have tried to drive this point home about the gaming industry. We tax the gaming industry more than most states do. They pay 21.5% of state tax plus an average of an additional 6% local gaming taxes. As I

said earlier, this is on top of the property and sales taxes they pay, as well as the sales taxes their vendors pay. They also pay taxes on any promotional dollars they may offer to get a customer to come to their property – basically paying taxes on their own money. Very few states tax this, but Louisiana does. These businesses get absolutely none of the tax incentives most other businesses enjoy, such as industrial tax exemptions on their property, Quality Jobs tax credits, or Enterprise Zone tax breaks. If our state wants to entice a private business to come to Louisiana, they typically offer a multitude of tax breaks and incentives, yet the gaming industry is prohibited from participating in those incentives. I’m not saying this is right or wrong, but it is a reality most people are unaware of. Also, I remind people constantly that every form of gaming we have in our state was voted on by the people where it’s located. The legislature has never enacted a form of gaming not voted on by the people. This is why you see such a difference in every parish of this state of what gaming is allowed and what is not allowed.

Any immediate concerns about the industry and its future?

We are always concerned about what Texas is going to do in the future with gaming. The Texas legislature has always taken an opposing view to gaming, but the demand from its constituents is likely going change that. I predict Texas will some day have various forms of legalized gaming. It may not be in the immediate future, but it eventually will happen, and when it does, it will have a huge impact on Louisiana revenue, especially in the SWLA and Shreveport/Bossier markets. The industry here is aware of this and keeping a close eye on what may happen.

My second concern is problem and compulsive gambling. It’s been refreshing to see the proactive approach the industry is taking to be responsible with their customer base. The industry realizes they have an obligation to address this directly. I’m proud that in Louisiana we have a very active and first-class compulsive gambling program for those who need it. There are both inpatient and outpatient programs available at no cost to the public. This past legislative session, I advocated for, and was successful in getting, more of the sports betting revenue dedicated to compulsive gambling. We have a moral obligation to do that.

The third issue facing the industry is the proliferation of offshore illegal gambling. These are unregulated, online gambling sites that do not restrict underage participants and pay no tax revenue. We estimate it to be a $14 billion a year problem. Only Congress can get a handle on this and Louisiana is leading the way in advocating for control of this very serious problem.

DOUGH2GOUGH

Every Cookie is Your Masterpiece

In Lake Charles, a local man is stirring up quite the delicious storm. Meet Taylor Gagneaux, the mastermind behind Dough2Gough, a local cookie company that’s taking the art of cookie baking to a whole new level. With literally thousands of mouthwatering options for customization, Dough2Gough is redefining the way we savor these sweet treats.

Taylor’s journey into the realm of cookies from his professional real estate background may seem like an unusual one, but it’s a testament to the power of passion and the allure of creating something truly unique. “By trade, I’m a realtor but I have a true passion for baking,” he says. “I’ve spent a lot of time refining my recipes to bake the perfect cookie each time. The investment of my time is worth it when I see satisfied customers with their masterpiece.”

In April of this year, Taylor’s dream became a reality with the launch of Dough2Gough. Calling the idea a dream is no cliché, the idea actually came to Taylor in a deep sleep. “I tell the story often and it may seem silly, but I really did dream this idea up,” he says. “I woke up from a dead sleep and typed the words customizable cookie company into a Notes app on my phone. It took off from there!”

What sets Dough2Gough apart is its revolutionary concept of complete customization. Customers can choose from an extensive menu of flavors, add-ins, and count of their cookie order, resulting in a staggering 223,000 possible combinations. It’s a cookie lover’s paradise where you can have your cookie exactly the way you want it. The concept behind Dough2Gough is simple yet brilliant. Taylor believes that the perfect cookie should be a reflection of the individual enjoying it. “Cookies are personal,” he says. “Why settle for mass-produced options when you can have a cookie tailor-made just for you?”

And tailor-made they are. Imagine crafting a cookie with flavors that evoke childhood memories, adding in your favorite nuts, chocolates, or even a sprinkle of sea salt. With half a dozen, a dozen, and two dozen ordering options, you can indulge on occasion or stock up! At Dough2Gough, the possibilities are endless.

Though, the beauty of Taylor’s customizable cookies extends beyond personal indulgence. It’s a concept that lends itself perfectly to branding, special occasions, and celebrations. Want to surprise a loved one with a unique

gift? Why not name a cookie after them? Planning a wedding or a birthday party? Let Dough2Gough create cookies that perfectly match your theme. The options are limited only by your imagination. For Taylor, every cookie is a work of art, and it shows in the meticulous attention to detail that goes into crafting each batch. “Quality is paramount for us,” he emphasizes. “We source the finest ingredients, and every cookie is made with love and care.”

Dough2Gough offers two ways to enjoy their creations. Customers can opt to purchase frozen dough, allowing them to bake these heavenly treats in the comfort of their own homes. This option not only guarantees the freshest cookies imaginable but also allows you to cook as much or as little as you’d like. Alternatively, you can request your order to be baked prior to pick up.

In just a few short months, Dough2Gough has garnered a dedicated following of cookie connoisseurs who appreciate the art of customization. “We’re not just selling cookies,” he says. “We’re creating experiences and memories, one cookie at a time.” The success is a testament to the power of passion and the idea that dreams can become reality with dedication and creativity.

Family Works: HOKUS POKUS LIQUORS The House of Many Spirits

In Lake Charles, there’s a unique gem that has been passed down through four generations, bringing joy and spirits to our community for 83 years. This month, Family Works takes you on a journey through the rich history and vibrant present of Hokus Pokus Liquors.

With its three locations across Louisiana –Alexandria, Lake Charles, and Prairieville - it isn’t just a liquor store; it’s a testament to family values, community, and a passion for fine spirits. The original Alexandria store, established in 1940, was the dream of Simon “Si” Sherman. In 1970, the Lake Charles store was added, and the family would eventually branch into Southeastern Louisiana with the addition of the Prairieville location.

Since 1940, Hokus Pokus Liquors has expanded and contracted from one store to five and back again, and then to two, finally reaching today’s permutation of three stores. In 2008, Gus organized the wholesale side of the business into a separately run entity and renamed it Mystic Vine. Mystic Vine is now located in New Orleans Louisiana and operates statewide.

Perhaps the most endearing aspect of Hokus Pokus Liquors is its legacy of generational ownership. Now in its fourth generation of ownership, the business has seen three sets of parents and children working alongside each other in its over eight decades.

Si’s son, Steve Sherman, grew up around his father’s liquor business, but after serving in the Navy and graduating from New Orleans’ Tulane University in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in business, he moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where he worked in the shoe business. After spending a summer month in 1962 working at France’s Chateau Lascombes, where he was involved in all aspects of winemaking, it didn’t take a magic wand to make him reappear in 1976, ready to help his father in the business. Si retired in 1982 and Steve and his wife Lillian took over.

Gus Olah, too, grew up in the liquor businessas Steve Sherman’s stepson. Working at the store during high school, he learned the business from the bottom up. In 1994, he joined the company full time. Then, in 1998, he graduated from

Louisiana College in Pineville with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

Now, his daughters, Elizabeth and Isabella are poised to continue the family legacy. Elizabeth joined the business in 2020 and currently serves as an area manager. Isabella is currently completing her marketing degree at Loyola University with plans to join the business upon graduation.

In an era when large corporations often overshadow family-owned businesses, they stand as a symbol of resilience and determination. They’ve shown that staying true to one’s roots, embracing change, and prioritizing the community can lead to longterm success.

What sets Hokus Pokus apart isn’t just its impressive collection of liquors, wines, beers, and other spirits, but the unwavering commitment to adapt and innovate while staying true to its roots. It’s evident that they have mastered the delicate art of blending tradition with modernity.

In today’s fast-paced digital age, they’ve not only embraced e-commerce but have excelled at it. They offer a seamless online ordering and pickup system, and a user-friendly app that provides customers with a digital gateway to explore their vast collection, order, and earn rewards. The rewards program reflects their commitment to giving back to their loyal clientele.

Walking into any Hokus Pokus store is like stepping into a world of endless possibilities. They offer a remarkable selection of liquors from around the world, a treasure trove for connoisseurs and enthusiasts. But it’s not just the vast collection that makes this place special; it’s the people behind the counters. The staff, affectionately referred to as “Spiritual Advisors,” are more than just employees. They are experts, ready to guide you through world of spirits, helping you find the perfect bottle for any occasion. It’s this personal touch that sets them apart from the big-box retailers. Regular tastings at their stores also offer an opportunity for patrons to discover new flavors.

Bayou Ballet Sharing the Art of Ballet with Southwest Louisiana

Katelyn Chargois began practicing ballet at age five. Today, this savvy 27-year-old has crafted a successful career from the art of dance. In 2021, she opened the Dance Conservatory of Louisiana, where she teaches ballet, tap, Pilates and strength training. When parents began asking if their children would perform in productions, Chargois realized she needed to take her ballet business to the next level. “I want to give my students performance opportunities, but the arts aren’t always well-supported. It’s hard to put on the level of performance you want to put on without financial support. I opened a school, but if you want to produce large artful ballets, you need a non-profit.”

One year after opening her studio, Chargois assembled a board of directors and founded Bayou Ballet. The primary purpose for her non-profit is to grow the art of ballet within the community. “I want to flip the script on people’s conception of what ballet is. Ballet has an undeserved reputation that it’s ‘boring’. My goal is to get ballet out in front of people and show them that it’s athletic, it’s fun, it’s entertaining.”

Chargois and her board brainstormed ways to make that goal happen. They decided to create a short ballet production and present it to local elementary school students in the form of an assembly. “The days of selling out the Rosa Hart Theatre to school groups for a classical ballet performance are over,” she says. “So, I’m taking the ballet to them.”

costumes, not theater costumes; and I want the dancers to look like dancers and embody the characters. I chose simple leotards that can be painted on. Characters include Clyde, of course, as well as sunflowers, cowbirds, and corn stalks.”

The ballet production is 22 minutes long and each assembly will last approximately 45 minutes. “I’ll start by having the students try some simple ballet moves,” says Chargois. “When people watch ballet, they often think it looks easy. We’re taught that a dancer’s job is to make it appear effortless. I disagree with that a bit. I tell my dancers we need to show them the difficulty, but not with our faces.”

Chargois says the show will present ballet to students in a way that’s connected to Louisiana culture. “It’s fun and exciting. It’s also good for my dancers to experience taking a show “on tour” and learn how to manage those potential challenges. I think they’ll really have fun with it!”

Clyde the Cajun Calf debuts in elementary schools beginning January 2024.

To develop a show, Chargois connected with children’s writer Tommie Townsley, who has written and published numerous Louisiana-themed animal stories. Chargois chose Townsley’s book, Clyde the Cajun Calf. She adapted a few sections, sketched some costume designs and sent it back to Townsley for input. “Tommie loved the concept,” says Chargois.

For the musical score, she chose Aaron Copland’s Rodeo – a fivesong series with a western vibe. “I wanted it to feel like home.” In addition to narrating and choreographing the show, Chargois also created all the costumes with some help from her friend and costume designer, Lauren Carmen. “Like many people involved in the arts, I’m very particular. I need control over the details. Tommie’s book, illustrated by Anne Dentler, is full of beautiful watercolors. I want the costumes to have that same feel. I want them to look like dance

Southlake Theatre Expands SWLA's Performance Arts Opportunities

Take one step into the lobby of Southlake Theater and you know you’re in for something special. With state-of-the-art audio and visual technology, this newly opened performance venue offers art patrons a unique experience unprecedented in Southwest Louisiana. “There aren’t many rooms like this,” says owner Jake Porche’, adding that there are very few theaters in the world with this level of audio technology. But that is only the beginning of what makes Southlake Theater distinctive.

The theater is part of the Southlake Crossing Plaza, which is the former site of Skate City. Porche’ says the location is nostalgic for people old enough to remember the attraction and have fond memories of family and friends gathering together and having fun. The space that once was home to a roller rink is once again meeting the needs of the community, but in very different ways. The multi-purpose room can accommodate traditional theater productions, catered dinner theaters, concerts, films, corporate events, even wedding receptions. Theater director Taylor Trahan says she and Porche’ have backgrounds in music and they’ve partnered with Calcasieu Theatrical Arts for many years. “We’ve seen the benefits the arts can do for kids and the joy it brings them. We recognized the need for a space like this to perform.”

An elegant atmosphere welcomes guests into the theater lobby, along with the inviting aroma of coffee. Exposed brick imbues a sense of warmth and nostalgia. Works by local artists are featured on the walls. The space was initially designed to simply be a theater lobby. “We needed a bar, a concession area, restrooms, with good flow,” Porche’ says. “But even if we scheduled two events a week, the lobby would sit empty the other five days.” Porche’ realized the

lobby could be better utilized by accommodating an everyday café, but he had no business experience in food and beverage. A chance encounter with Josh Smith, owner of Coffee:30 on College St. – and a simple question about coffee machines – opened the door to the perfect partnership. Porche’ kept the lobby space occupied, and Smith found a move-inready place for a second Coffee:30 location. “We saw this partnership as an opportunity to bring gourmet coffee and New Orleans-style beignets together with the creativity and entertainment that Southlake Theater brings to the community,” says Smith.

Step beyond the curtains into the theater, and as your eyes adjust to the dimness, you’re smitten with the newness of it all. Extra-wide seats ensure comfort through the lengthiest production. And despite its 300-person capacity, there’s not a bad seat in the house! The stage is enhanced by a 30x10 foot LED screen that can display photos, theatrical backdrops, present movies, and more. But the pinnacle of what sets Southlake Theater apart from other performance venues in SWLA is the audio/visual aspects and the advanced technology behind the D&B Audiotechnik Soundscape System. Porche’ calls it “adaptive acoustics.”

“The ability of a room to adapt its acoustic properties in real time provides an unforgettable performance experience,” he says. “For example, in a musical, when someone is speaking, you don’t want any sound reflections. You want to hear that voice as if they are two feet away from you. But when they start singing, you want the acoustics to be alive and sound like the voice is reverberating in a cathedral!”

To enhance the function of the high-tech audio/ visual system, Porche’, who also owns Porche’ Advanced Systems adjacent to the theater, staffs

the venue with his own highly trained technicians. “Few theaters, even in larger cities, have that level of talented in-house AV techs in terms of knowledge of the audio/visual equipment,” he says. Trahan adds, “The techs are very involved with every event that goes on in the theater.”They assist with the creative process, become familiar with a production, learn the actors’ cues and set the mood of a scene with advanced lighting and visual effects.

For Porche’, the grand opening of Southlake Theater marked a celebration of patience and perseverance. He purchased the property in November of 2018. His original plan for the space was a demonstration and training area to showcase Porche’ Advanced Systems’ products. But he quickly realized he could multipurpose the space and bring a

much-needed theater to south Lake Charles and still have a working showroom. Construction began in 2020, but they didn’t get far. Hurricane damage and COVID-19 put progress on hold until late 2022 when they resumed work. Southlake Theater opened for business on April 27, 2023, with a soft launch of Our Lady Queen of Heaven’s The Music Man Jr. production. “That first event was a really good test of not only the room, the flow, the lobby, but also the parking capacity,” Porche’ said. “We wanted to ensure that the facility had the infrastructure to support 300 people in attendance plus the cast. Things could not have gone more smoothly!”

In July, Lake Charles Little Theatre enthusiastically opened their 2022-2023 season with the crowd-

pleasing production On with the Show. “The response from the community has been great,” says Porche’. “It’s been a very rewarding journey so far; to create a space where people can come and experience truly special moments. We want Southlake Theater to be a catalyst for people who wish to pursue performing arts.” He and Trahan emphasize that Southlake Theater is a community performance and event space. Trahan’s dream is to foster a wide variety of choral options in SWLA for people who might not otherwise have an outlet for their talent. “I love classical choir, but not everyone does, and I grew up singing gospel, but not everyone attends a house of worship. I want to start several different types of community-based choirs, so that people looking for those opportunities can find them.”

Porche’ encourages the community to consider Southlake Theater for any event they might be planning. “Give us a call, schedule a tour. It’s a very special and unique space.”

Local Updates

Lake Area Ballet Theatre is Home for the Holidays

Under the artistic direction of Colleen Cannon Benoit, the faculty and board of Lake Area Ballet Theatre (LABT) are dedicated to staging full-scale ballet performances, producing new and innovative works, and providing a strong and diverse curriculum for the next generation of dancers. The LABT is in its ninth season as a non-profit performance company and the 2023-24 season promises to transport you into an enchanted world of dance theatre. The dancers train at Lake Charles Dance Academy in Lake Charles. Dr. Lonny Benoit and McNeese State University have supported this local mission over the past few years and allowed them to use the Tritico Theatre while the Civic Center repaired damages from Hurricanes Laura and Delta.

A bit of exciting news to share is that the Rosa Hart Theatre’s repairs will be completed in time for the LABT’s production of The Nutcracker. They will be home for the holidays with a local performing cast of approximately 150 dancers. In addition, they are thrilled to present an all new, full-length story ballet, Alice in Wonderland, March 22-24, 2024. Both productions will be held at the Lake Charles Civic Center’s Rosa Hart Theatre. Tickets can be purchased online through Ticketmaster and it is not too late to become a sponsor of LABT!

Lake Charles Little Theatre

The Lake Charles Little Theatre is back on stage after the storms, offering a full slate of entertainment — and acting and singing opportunities — for 2023-24.

LCLT’s performance space for mainstage productions this season is the new Southlake Theater off Nelson Road. It’s a state-of-the-art theater that has a full-service coffee shop (Coffee:30 Express) in the lobby.

LCLT performs at Southlake because its longtime downtown theatre was destroyed by Hurricane Laura. Its interim headquarters is at the historic Central School Arts and Humanities Center, with office and rehearsal space in a spacious second-floor studio.

Founded in 1926 by Rosa Hart, LCLT is the oldest arts organization in Southwest Louisiana. Its board president is Brett Downer, whose family members have appeared on the LCLT stage since its very first season.

Historic City Hall Arts & Cultural Center

Historic City Hall Arts & Cultural Center has reemerged as a gem, fully restored to its former glory. Though battered by the relentless hurricanes of 2020, the structure has undergone meticulous repair, revitalizing both its iconic Bell Tower and the rich tapestry of its interior and exterior.

Amanda Donaldson, the City of Lake Charles’ Director of Cultural Affairs, expressed her delight in working within a building that now brims with potential. With the restoration project at its triumphant conclusion, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the full splendor, all free of charge.

Inside these hallowed walls, creativity knows no bounds. Rotating exhibits breathe life into every corner, while stationary galleries like the Black Heritage Gallery and Gallery by the Lake provide a glimpse into the enduring artistry of our community.

One upcoming exhibit promises to be a crowning jewel – “Bill Iles: A Retrospective.” Bill Iles, a luminary artist with roots in Lake Charles, now graces the Culpratt Gallery in New Orleans but remains steadfast in his connection to this city. His remarkable work holds the power to mesmerize.

Donaldson aptly sums up the center’s mission: “We are bridging communities and demographics with art,” she declares, reaffirming that visitors from all walks of life are not only welcomed but celebrated.

The Historic City Hall Arts & Cultural Center is not just a building reborn; it’s a vibrant testament to the enduring spirit of our city, offering a profound connection between the past and present through the universal language of art.

An Exploration of Possibility

A Different Kind of Leader, for Real Change.

Dustan started a career in law enforcement at 18 years old. After 15 years serving as a deputy, he went to law school and became a Prosecutor with the District Attorney’s Office, helping put violent offenders where they belong.

Currently operating his own firm working in Family Law and Criminal Defense. He’s been hands-on in the Parish Jail, on the streets of our community, and investigating the worst criminal cases – the abuse of children and sex crimes.

He’s been both a prosecutor and defense lawyer, so he knows the law from all sides.

This October, we will elect a new sheriff. Let change the way the Sheriff Office does business.

All candidates were contacted using the contact information provided during qualifying. Those who responded by press time are included.

SWLA Candidates for Sheriff

CALCASIEU PARISH

Dustan Abshire is a lifelong resident of Calcasieu Parish. Abshire embarked on his law enforcement journey immediately after high school, working in various roles, including corrections, patrol, and specialized investigations such as sex crimes and child abuse. After serving as a deputy for 15 years, Abshire pursued a career shift, attending law school and ultimately becoming a prosecutor with the District Attorney's Office. Following his time as a prosecutor, he opened his own law firm, specializing in family law and criminal defense. Abshire is a committed family man, having been married for 22 years and raising three children. He and his wife are also proud grandparents to four grandchildren. He brings a profound blend of experiences to the table. “I have the unique experience of knowing both sides of the law,” he says. “I’ve been a cop, a prosecutor, and now I’m a criminal defense attorney and a business owner.” Abshire’s motivation in seeking the position of Sheriff is to bring about the necessary changes required to restore trust in law enforcement within the community. He is committed to enhancing the safety of the community and prioritizing the well-being of the men and women serving in the Sheriff's

“My primary goal is to rebuild trust within the community,” Abshire says. “I recognize that effective law enforcement relies on strong bonds between the public and the department.” Building relationships in the community will open the lines of communication. Abshire recognizes the importance of trust as a foundation for success and aims to foster relationships that facilitate effective dialogue. One key component in accomplishing that goal is to create a committee that will help bridge communication gaps and provide valuable insights to enhance community-police relations.

Abshire believes the Sheriff’s office should focus on building their department around the challenges in our world today. “I’m committed to enhancing public safety, emphasizing community involvement, bringing in mental health professionals for crisis situations, ensuring school safety through training and procedures, and developing programs to address drug-related crimes and violence.”

Another part of his plan is to establish a new command structure and staff with a plan to create a structured system based on four pillars; enforcement, corrections, investigation, and special services. “Deputy retention and development of leadership is pivotal,” Abshire says. “Providing excellent training, creating a fair system for promotions, communication about long term goals, and a defined pay scale are all a part of that.”

Abshire believes that his extensive background in law enforcement combined with his dedication to improving community relations and enhancing the Sheriff's Office, uniquely qualifies them for the role of Sheriff in Calcasieu Parish.

Les Blanchard

Les Blanchard was born and raised in Lake Charles. He graduated from Barbe High School in 1991 and McNeese State University in 1995, earning a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. Blanchard earned his college degree while working twelve-hour shifts at the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office, demonstrating a strong commitment to dedication, work ethic, and sacrifice. Les is married to his best friend and is the proud father of four. The upcoming election for the new Sheriff in Calcasieu Parish marks an exciting time for the community. “I am honored for this opportunity. I understand the immense task ahead of me and am eager to return to serving our great parish,” says Blanchard. “Public service is my life's blood and I'm passionate about this office.”

After over thirty years of dedicated service to the people of the parish and beyond, Blanchard retired in July to devote his efforts, focus, and energy to the campaign for Calcasieu Parish Sheriff – a move that he says is not the end but rather a new beginning.

If elected, Blanchard’s priority is to improve the quality of life for all residents. While law enforcement is a crucial aspect of the role, he emphasizes the office's fundamental mission - helping people. And that starts with the boots on the ground. “I will empower our deputies to be their best,” he says. “I will place emphasis on employee retention and development, proper compensation, operational consistency, fiscal responsibility, mental health, human trafficking, opioid crisis and much more.” Accountability will be a cornerstone, ensuring adherence to the law. “I’m going to invest in our most valuable asset, our deputies,” he adds.

Blanchard’s extensive experience began at the age of 19, working his way up from corrections to patrol and investigations. Most of his career was spent as a unit leader in areas such as narcotics, violent crimes, domestic violence, juveniles, sex crimes, and participation in federal task forces, with approximately 18 years of this service focused primarily on handling violent crimes. This breadth of experience has uniquely prepared him for the role of Sheriff. “I've seen more faces of evil than any man should,” says Blanchard. “This has not only equipped me for the job but made me appreciate the true value of life.” Blanchard brings empathy, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to fairness.

Stitch Guillory

Gary “Stitch” Guillory is one of the most trusted leaders in Calcasieu Parish and will bring 40 years of law enforcement experience as the next Sheriff of Calcasieu Parish.

“I believe God gave us life and this great country provided us with opportunity, which is why I have devoted my life to maintaining law and order for the people of Calcasieu Parish. It has been my honor to be the Chief Deputy and lead one of the nation’s finest law enforcement agencies for the last 19 years. As Sheriff, I will use my decades of experience, fresh ideas, and vision to take the office to even greater heights,” said Guillory.

At age 21, Guillory discovered his passion for law enforcement while serving as a patrolman for the Westlake Police Department. During his 21-year career there, he rose through the ranks and was appointed interim Chief of Police in 1997, then elected to the position the following year. In 2004, he joined the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office as Chief Deputy.

Throughout his decades-long law enforcement career, Guillory has served as a Juvenile Officer, a Firearms Instructor, and a D.A.R.E. Officer. His educational credentials include the FBI National Academy, an intensive ten-week course attended by only one percent of law enforcement leaders worldwide; the LSU Basic Training Academy; the LSU Juvenile Officers Institute; the D.A.R.E. Instructor School; and the P.O.S.T. Firearms Instructor School.

Guillory has shown compassion for crime victims as well as first-time offenders convicted of nonviolent crimes. He was appointed by the Governor to the Crime Victims Board and currently serves as its chairman. In addition, he is a member of the Crime Reparations Board, which is responsible for assisting victims of crime with their expenses.

If elected, Guillory will continue to take a strong stance against violent and repeat offenders to keep Calcasieu Parish a safe and secure place for our families to live. He also plans to respond vigorously to the massive spike in fentanyl use and trafficking.

As a fiscal conservative, Guillory believes tax dollars should be prioritized and spent wisely. “I will be a responsible steward of our taxpayers’ money. Before anything else, I will invest in our most valuable resource, our deputies. I will continuously strive to ensure that our deputies are highly trained and wellcompensated. Our community deserves the best, and I know what it takes to provide that.”

CAMERON PARISH

Chris Savoie

Chris Savoie, Chief Deputy for the Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office, is a lifelong Cameron Parish resident with 27 years of law enforcement experience.

“I am committed to providing a solid, welltrained, well-educated law enforcement department to serve and protect our community,” Savoie says.

“My goal is to build upon our current success with continuing education, advanced technology and increased visibility and engagement across the parish.”

Savoie began his law enforcement career with the Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office in 1996, serving in the patrol division for five years before being promoted to the criminal detective division, a position he held for 11 years. He was promoted to Chief Deputy 11 years ago. As Chief Deputy, Savoie has established several new divisions and programs including the School Resource Officer Division and courtroom security, as well as creating a dedicated officer position to monitor parish-wide sex offenders.

Savoie has created, implemented and increased required officer training in firearms, patrol rifle, radar, DWI/Field Sobriety, first-aid and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage. Under his direction, all Cameron Parish Sheriff employees are CPR certified, and AEDs have been placed in all patrol units.

During the 2020 natural disasters, Savoie was tasked with setting up temporary office space in order to continue communicating and responding to the community. Savoie has also adopted new technology systems for each patrol unit as well as new traffic trailers, ATVs and watercraft to efficiently meet the unique needs of Cameron Parish residents.

Savoie has completed extensive law enforcement training throughout his career, including the Calcasieu Regional Law Enforcement Training Academy, FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association Institute, and Traffic Reconstruction, Hostage Negotiation and Crime Scene Investigation Training, all through the Institute of Police Technology & Management. He is also a certified DWI/Standardized Field Sobriety Test instructor.

Active in professional and community organizations, Savoie is a member of the Louisiana Sheriff’s Association, FBI-L.E.E.D.A., Cameron Parish Recovery Board, Cameron Parish Lions Club, Cameron Parish Council on Aging Board and Grand Lake Faith Temple. He is a volunteer coach of youth and high school sports and is

JEFFERSON DAVIS PARISH

Kyle Miers

Kyle Miers was born in the heart of Jennings at the then Jennings American Legion Hospital in 1975. He spent his childhood living in Roanoke, graduated from Welsh High School, and later graduated from SOWELA. His journey into public service began when he enlisted in the Louisiana Army National Guard before graduating, a career during which he would go on to receive the Army Achievement Medal.

Miers began his career in law enforcement in 2000 at the Ward 3 City Marshal’s Office in Lake Charles under then City Marshal Tony Mancuso. He followed Mancuso to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office after his election as Sheriff. He was named the president of his class at the Calcasieu Parish Regional Law Enforcement Training Academy and went on to serve nearly two decades with the department before taking an amicable leave of absence to pursue election to Sheriff of Jeff Davis Parish.

Sheriff Ivy Woods

Sheriff Ivy Woods is seeking reelection to a fourth term as Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff. A lifelong resident of the parish, Sheriff Woods has raised his family here and takes pride in seeing his children choose to do the same. “I patrolled this parish as a Louisiana State Trooper and it was a lifelong goal to one become Sheriff,” he says. “That dream became reality in 2011 and the goal remains the same as I seek reelection.”

Sheriff Woods is resolute about the importance of keeping up with the ever-evolving world of crime and its prevention. Harnessing newer and better technology across various aspects of law enforcement, from administration to criminal investigations, is vital in keeping the department running efficiently.

Additionally, he emphasizes the significance of employee motivation and equipped personnel. "They are the key to keeping this agency running,” Sheriff Woods says. “They need the proper tools and morale to continue to serve the people of the parish properly and safely."

During his tenure at the CPSO, he gained a broad spectrum of experience, spanning corrections, patrol, SWAT, Dive Team/UCIU (Underwater Criminal Investigation Unit) supervision, and coordination of operations with several federal agencies. He received recognition for his heroic actions, including being awarded the CPSO Challenge Coin for saving a potential drowning victim.

If elected Sheriff, Miers pledges to prioritize communication and trust-building within the community. "I’ve been active in this community for the past four years,” he says. “I know how vital communication and trust within the community and between municipal and parish law enforcement agencies is.”

Miers brings unique experiences with cutting-edge technology and collaborations with high-tech companies like Google, AT&T, and T-Mobile, among others. “I’ve been fortunate to use the most up-to-date technology to solve major federal crimes,” he says. “I’d like to implement that same technology to protect the people of the parish.”

Miers also plans address issues related to parish jail to ensure every felon is booked. Additional goals are to create a proactive crime deterrent unit, which will consist of additional patrol officers on the streets, establishing a Federal Drug Task Force, and proactively addressing juvenile crime. Lastly, Miers emphasizes a strong focus on deputy development and training.

With an impressive thirty-two years of law enforcement experience, Sheriff Woods brings a wealth of knowledge and dedication to public service to the table. Before his current 11 tenure as the sitting Sheriff, he served for 21 years with the Louisiana State Police (LSP). “The time I’ve served with these two agencies has given me a wealth of experience needed to continue as Sheriff of Jeff Davis Parish."

In his tenure as Sheriff, Woods has assembled a command staff boasting over 120 years of combined law enforcement experience, encompassing patrol, investigations, and administration; a testament to his leadership and his department’s dedication to the parish. But, as all good leaders know, there is always room for growth. “I still have a lot to do,” he says. “During my term as Sheriff, I’ve begun the much-needed task of expanding the Sheriff’s Office operations to a new administration building, as well as a dispatch building. Currently, we are in the beginning phase of constructing a new evidence and training building.” He considers these improvements to be an investment in his employees, which is not only beneficial to the agency but also to the people of the parish.

The strategy is complex but the goal, according to Sheriff Woods, is a simple one. “Ultimately, this is always the goal, to serve and protect those who make our community the best that it can be: the people.”

Cool Jobs:

Sports Information Director

A Bonnette Family Legacy

The name Bonnette has been synonymous with collegiate athletics in Louisiana for over a half century since Louis Bonnette took the Sports Information Director job at McNeese in 1966. After 46 years, over 500 consecutive McNeese football games, having the McNeese football field named after him, as well as the Southland Conference’s Sports Media Award, Louis Bonnette retired from a job that took him to 48 of the 50 states, leaving behind a legacy that his sons Michael and Matthew both carry on today at LSU and McNeese, respectively.

The job of Sports Information Director has evolved over the course of time and differs depending on a school’s size and number of sports, but it takes more than just a passion for sports to do the job right, so it’s only natural to ask all three Bonnettes for their experience on this cool job.

First things first, what does a Sports Information Director do?

LB: When I first started sports information by itself was more than a full-time job. I also handled our ticket office, our travel, and some of our budget. We kept our statistics in all sports ourselves. Saturday nights after football games were long, especially when there were no computers.

MiB: A little bit of everything. Our main responsibility is to publicize our teams and student athletes. Being able to tell those feel-good stories about our student-athletes overcoming adversity, doing good things in the community, getting their degree – that’s what we strive to do.

MaB: The job has evolved so much over the 22 years I’ve been in it. It’s mainly a media relations position. Being the athletics department spokesperson and liaison with the media is still the number one thing.

What was your path to the SID position?

LB: It was immediate into the journalism field for me. I graduated from Louisiana Tech in January of 1963 and the next day began working for the Beaumont (TX) Enterprise. They had planned on me joining the news staff but a sports job had opened. I was with Enterprise for three years before getting the job at McNeese.

MiB: I was a general studies major at LSU with an emphasis on marketing, management, and journalism. I basically grew up in

my dad’s office – I would go there after school just about every day. I idolized my dad and was so proud of the work he did and the job he had. I was fortunate to be able to work in the sports information department as a student at LSU. It validated what I was thinking growing up.

MaB: I was a student worker for my dad in the SID department, so I was at all the home football, basketball, and baseball games. I was also the sports editor for the school newspaper The Contraband. I wanted to go into film study and write and produce movies. But when I realized that dream was not happening, I started to work at KPLC and got into commercial production. At some point, I saw the light and decided to finish my degree.

What effect has social media and technology had on the job?

LB: You’re able to get info out a lot quicker to a lot more people. There is no holding onto stories. When it happens, it’s out. Also, a lot of people on Facebook think that they might know more.

MiB: Technology has made some things much easier, but it’s also created another layer of work that wasn’t available to us early in my career. We are fortunate to have so many former athletes doing great things in the professional leagues and social media gives us the chance to share that with our fans.

MaB: The first mention of any news is no longer coming from the SID office, but now it’s out on social media. The advancement of technology has really sped up the profession, especially when it comes to keeping game stats.

What are some of your favorite memories of being on the job?

LB: Working in the same press box with Michael in 2010 when McNeese played at LSU and with Matthew a couple of times when McNeese played at Northwestern State. Michael and Matthew following along in the job is what I am most proud about. They knew the hard work that it takes.

64 Thrive Magazine for Better Living • September 2023 Places & Faces

MiB: Being part of three national championships in football is always something I will remember, but the things that mean the most to me are the friendships with the players and coaches through the years. It’s also really cool to have a brother in the business at a school right down the interstate.

MaB: One of the most special things in my life was working for dad - seeing how professional he was at the job and how well respected he was by everyone in the community. In terms of events worked, my favorite has been when football beat the heck out of South Florida, a BCS school who was a year removed from being No. 2. Of course, the near shocker at Nebraska, when Nebraska won in the final seconds, as our team walked off the field, the entire Nebraska fanbase gave our guys a standing ovation.

What would you tell someone that wanted to become a Sports Information Director? What steps should they take?

MiB: You obviously have to be passionate about it and be willing to take any opportunity to get your foot in the door. Being able to communicate in a must – you have to be able to communicate both verbally and through the written word. Writing seems to be a lost art but it’s extremely important when it comes to story-telling, press releases, and spreading the word about your teams.

MaB: Be ready to work. If anyone is looking to get into the field, I’d say to contact that department and ask about volunteering or shadowing the SID or assistants to see what all is involved. There’s so much to the job that people don’t know about.
