Kids Make a Joyful Noise at MUSICAMP Rockin’ the house takes on new meaning each year at MUSICAMP, a full week of swingin’ sounds for kids grades K through 6. Put on by First Baptist Church and made possible with the help of grants from the Decatur Area Arts Council and the Illinois Arts Council, MUSICAMP drums a beat to a different theme each year. This year’s choice: Specifically Pacific. Kids will enjoy and experience music and cultural arts from all over the Pacific Rim, from Australia to Alaska. Now in its 22nd iteration, MUSICAMP offers free music, guest artists and related arts and activities. Did we mention it’s FREE? That’s right, no charge at all! In 22 years they’ve never turned anyone away—all are welcome. “Our mission is to provide music and related arts in a Christian environment that’s completely free,” says MUSICAMP founder and leader Pastor Mike Waltenberger. “We want to stimulate creativity and develop their minds, give them things to do that may inspire a lifelong interest in music and arts.” Waltenberger, who helped found the camp 22 years ago after coming to First Baptist as minister of music, envisioned a place where kids could be exposed to all types of music from all over the world. At the same time he wanted to create an opportunity for anyone to experience the joys of music, where cost was no barrier. More than 20 volunteers, plus teen staff and adult leadership, help make the camp possible. Completely hands on and totally fun, MUSICAMP features a clever mix of
music and activity to keep the mind and the heart moving. On the docket for this year’s session: pottery making, ukulele playing and the popular dance-inspired workout Zumba. Guest artists include Kate Kuper, providing a creative movement experience, and Rocky Maffit, who will present a drumming program. Kids split into three groups for music and entertainment: kindergarten and 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and 4th through 6th. “We always have a great group of children eager to learn,” says Waltenberger. He likens the camp to his favorite quotation from famed novelist and humorist Garrison Keillor: “Nothing you ever do for a child is ever wasted.” Each year nearly 70 kids make music part of their lives from 9 to 11:30 every morning for a week. This year’s session runs from June 11-15. Contact the church at 8758034 for info and registration.

THE FOOD DUDE
La Tienda Burrito Truck
Spring has sprung in Decatur, and what better place for The Food Dude to hit than a food truck. The food truck creating the most buzz this year is the La Tienda Burrito Truck, parked on East Pershing Road, just to the east of Culver’s in the parking lot of the Sparkle Clean car wash. There’s no signage to speak of. Just look for the painted truck and a tiny black and white “yard sale” type sign in the boulevard. This burrito truck offers only four food items tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and tortas, which are Mexican sandwiches. Four food items with many combinations for someone as math challenged as the Dude. You see, the tacos, burritos, and tortas each come with a variety of fillings. For example, they have tacos filled with steak, chicken, Al Pastor (marinated pork with pineapple), or chorizo. Or, you can mix and match. One friend had a bean taco with cheese, cilantro, and onions, which is definitely not on the menu. Another filling not on the menu, but which is available, is lengua, or beef tongue, which is surprisingly tender and delicious. The food is authentically Mexican. At any given time Mexican Americans are frequenting this establishment, which is always a good sign. But, this fine food attracts customers from all walks of life. There are two picnic tables, where patrons can enjoy their meal. There is a real sense of community, sitting outside the Burrito Truck, believe it or not. And, the food is addictive. One business man the Dude encountered there one day confessed he’d been there five days in a row! What are they
by T. F. DUDE
putting in that salsa anyway? Seriously, the salsa is made fresh daily on the truck and is memorable. Everything here is outstanding and a little bit different. We like different. The Food Dude’s favorite torta is the Milanesa, which is a breaded steak sandwich. All tortas come with beans, lettuce, avocado, a hunk of cheese, tomatoes, and peppers, along with the topping. TFD’s favorite taco is the chicken taco. All tacos come with double corn tortillas, are topped with onion and cilantro, and are served with red and green salsa and fresh lime. This is street food, the owner told the Dude, so don’t expect any plastic utensils, and it can be a bit messy. But, who cares! You don’t want to waste even a morsel of this great food, so you may be tempted to abandon good table manners there at the picnic tables, or bring your own utensils which is a lot of fun. Even the soda is different and a step above that of the competition. All of the soda is made in Mexico, using real sugar, instead of high fructose corn syrup, even the Coke and Pepsi. The Food Dude’s favorite flavors are the Tamarind and the Non-Alcoholic Sangria. Other flavors offered are mango, pineapple, fruit punch, mandarin orange, and apple. The La Tienda Burrito Truck is a welcome addition to the outdoor food scene - delicious food at reasonable prices. What could be better?
Get There: East Pershing Road just east of 51 North (old Sparkle Clean parking lot)
Open: March - November, 11a-7p

Cell Phone - or Watch? Somewhere in one of your drawers is a broken watch. You can’t throw it away because it was a gift, it was your first watch, you remember where and when you wore it, etc. That’s why in 2008, a Boston architecture firm started the Thousand Watch Project collecting broken watches. The project is recognition of the watch’s personal nature but diminished role in our lives. LED clocks are ubiquitous, and everyone carries a clock on a cell phone.
When you need to check the time, do you use a WATCH or PHONE?
35%
Watch “Checking time on a cell phone is an affectation of people pretending to use a cell phone,” says Larry Klugman. “Using my cell phone has opened up a whole new world of bracelets to me,” says Karyn Webb.
65% Cell Phone Based on 2010 Census data, margin of error for this survey is +/- 22%. Seriously, this is the opposite of scientific.

ART SPEAK
by Jerry Johnson
Takin' It to the Streets
One of the most interesting things about art is how it celebrates the traditions and masterpieces of the past yet still encourages innovation and pushing the boundaries of what is identified as art. A good example of these expanding boundaries is the rise of "street art." The term usually refers to unsanctioned art, art created in a public location without receiving prior permission. This work is not mere vandalism, however; it has also been defined as “all art on the street that’s not graffiti.” The people who create street art are trying to communicate with everyday people about social and political issues of the day— art that is “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” As it has grown in popularity, often attracting high-end, celebrity buyers, there has been a trend toward bringing street art "inside" and making it "legit." In September 2009, the Decatur Area Arts Council staged one of its most popular exhibits ever, “Street Art: Another Dimension,” including local and national artists. The opening night event welcomed twice the number of people as an average monthly gallery opening and the crowd spilled out of the Anne Lloyd Gallery and on to Water Street to watch airbrush and pin striping artists demonstrate their skills. The exhibit was created from a much broader definition of street art. Beyond public locations like buildings and sidewalks, it included a variety of nontraditional "canvases" which you might see on the street. The exhibit presented a custom-sculpted motorcycle, pinstriped purses, airbrushed skateboards and car parts, and tattoo art. Inspired by the show, one of the exhibitors has assembled another touring exhibit that will display in our Anne Lloyd Gallery, September 6-29, 2012. Entitled “Heavy Hitters: The Return of Street Art!,” the show features talented graffiti and street artists from around the world.
Photo: 2009 Street Art: Another Dimension at the Anne Lloyd Gallery. Compliments of the Decatur Area Arts Council.
Many local artists also create work that expresses an attitude similar to the original street artists. They use a variety of styles, techniques, materials and subject matter borrowed from the graffiti and guerilla artist tradition. The epicenter of this local movement is Oakland Avenue. A mural on the wall of Garcia's Pizza was created last year by one of the godfathers of street art, Ron English, a Decatur native. Also, on Oakland Avenue, Donnie's Homespun Pizza provides a showcase for the art and music of local artists. Art gives us a way to understand and express how we see the world. It’s a conversation that can’t necessarily be put into words, hung on a wall or written in a book. Look around as you travel and see who’s takin’ it to the streets.
Jerry Johnson is the Executive Director of the Decatur Area Arts Council and may be spotted pretty much anywhere art is happening. 12 | may 2012

Dear Miss Manners,
L
Although I love the idea of a traditional wedding cake, my family loves all sorts of flavors. How do I please everyone? - Becky
Becky - You are in luck. Today there are several alternatives for your situation. If you want a traditional wedding cake, have several layers. Ask the bakery to make each layer a different flavor. Or select a flavor that you believe will be most popular for the main cake and have an array of flavored sheet cakes also ready to cut.... your guests can select their favorite at the dessert table. Another way to solve your problem is to serve multiple dessert options such as cupcakes or cake pops instead of cake. This is an up and coming trend for weddings and parties because they are often less expensive, not as messy and do not have to be cut (sometimes a caterer charges a cake cutting fee). This can also be easier to transport for both the bakery and the bridal party. This option again allows each guest to have a selection of flavors. Depending on the way they are presented, they can also act as a take away favor. Many brides choose desserts that are the specialty of the caterer, such as chocolate strawberries, in place of cake. No matter what you choose, the dessert reflects the personality of the bridal party. And although you may not please everyone, be sure your groom can have his favorite!

“Something to Believe In” - Poison
Since 2010, every Wednesday night, from 9p until eternity, the stage at Donnie’s Homespun Pizza comes alive with fresh, local talent. Frequented by seasoned regulars and new dandies alike, 100 square feet of elevated rhythm becomes a stage for all flavors of musicians.
Originally started by local musician, Ashley Riley, and fueled by instrumental talent Tom Johnson, Donnie’s Open Mic Night has landed in the capable hands of enthusiastic central Illinois native and musician Matt Skinner. This team, along with the help of many others, has created a notch in local performers’ bedposts as part of the Oakwood music scene. Open Mic allows musicians to build confidence, test the water or just replenish the desire to jam. “Donnie’s is the perfect venue. It has a nice sound system, good vibe and no televisions to distract the audience, just great food and craft beer,” says Skinner. Maybe it’s the food and beer that bring some in, but most patrons stick around to interact with performers, calling out requests and cheering on amateurs. Wait staff may call out from behind the bar or sit down to join guests at their table for a song. Donnie’s is like home cooking at the coolest house on the block. continued: p.16

continued from: p.15
“Easy” -Lionel Ritchie
Not many jitterbugs reside here, the locale is as comfortable and casual as your living room couch and Skinner is proud of that. “I’m happy to be able to hear live music and see people develop as musicians. We encourage each other and keep a loose schedule to allow for growth and creativity,” he says. And that’s no lie— a night that starts out with Skinner taking requests from the audience ends with every performer playing together, for the first time. Talk about crescendo! The event is fluid every time. The sign-up sheet by the stage is the only staple to this process, but that leaves room for potential. The host may share responsibility by allowing someone else to open or change up the order to get someone home by their kids’ bed time. And week to week it varies; one week’s

solo may grow into next week’s jam band. Seasoned local musician Tyler Bundy stops in to play with band members from the past and present; he has even dropped a few songs with his sweetheart. “It’s nice to reconnect with old sounds and try new things all while encouraging growth of the music scene in Decatur.”
“Come Together” – The Beatles
Donnie’s has made no pigeon holes for this event. “We have a good mix of regulars and new people, but it’s always a diverse crowd— not just folksy guitar duos, but DJs and full bands too,” Skinner points out. If an act can set up in five minutes or less, they’re on! No limits, no expectations — just an experience waiting to happen while an eager audience awaits.
In one night a Millikin student, a chaplain, a recording artist and a lawyer all graced the stage. They presented genres that spanned decades of musical history— all within a few hours on a week night. Donnie’s owner Neill Dresen concurs, “Anyone can come in here and feel welcome. There may be only five people in here one night, but we cheer them on just the same— and then, the next week, we’ll have more.” Dresen credits consistency and reliability to the event's longevity.
“Keep Me in Your Heart” – Warren Zevon How does it work? A mish-mosh of artists in a semi-organized event, performing very different acts with no director, no producer and no cover charge? The love of music is how it works.
as everyone else. They pump gas and buy toilet paper just like their neighbor, but the tune inside of them plays with a little more soul. Most musicians don’t sit at home and watch tv after work. They embrace instruments and fine tune new levels of talent: always growing, always dreaming and always seeking the next finish line. Musicians play for the birds, their kids, or their partners— anyone who will listen and respond. The stage at Donnie’s presents a grateful audience every time. Performers aren’t the only regulars at Donnie’s on Wednesday nights. Frequent diners and music connoisseurs belly up to the bar mid-week just to see what Decatur’s got. Most are pleasantly surprised, and all are entertained.
Musicians are brilliant, hard-working, gifted citizens who walk the same streets

SILVER FOX - This extra wide brim, white straw Derby Hat has sparkling Silver Accents, a vintage brooch and feathers.
The Kentucky Derby is known as "the greatest two minutes in sports," but there's more to the derby than just the race itself. All things considered-it's a fashion show with a splash of racing. The Derby is about going all-out, though, and that's probably why we think of "Derby Hats" as oversized, eccentric hats. This got us to wondering: what exactly is a "Derby hat?" To nail down an answer, we enlisted the help of Sallye May from All that Jazz Design who is always on the search for a unique, vintage hat she can revive or transform into a new, one - ofa-kind creation and has a knack for Derby Hats. The verdict? Derby Hats seem to be any kind of hat-if you wear it to the Derby! Consider this; the race only lasts a little over 2 minutes but the "Derby" festivities can run for a week or more in Louisville and there are plenty of parties right here in the Decatur area celebrating the race.
All hats shown are by Sallye Mae, and modeled by Erynn Hendricks. You can find several of these hats at Earthen Pottery in downtown Decatur or online at: etsy.com/shop/AllThatJazzDesign.

To go in true Kentucky Derby style, you'll want to be prepared with the perfect show-stopping, conversation inspiring hat for parades, brunches, lunches, cocktail parties, and more.
LADY AZALEA With a medium brim, this ivory sinamay hat with roses, azaleas and feathers makes quite the statement and would stand out in a crowd at the Kentucky Derby. CHIC NOIR CLOCHE Think simple. This chic black cloche hat would look great with a mint julep in hand, would it not? MAD MEN FEDORA This baby blue suede hat by John B. Stetson is a true vintage revival. Derby hats aren't just for women but men tend to stay on the conservative side. Toss on a classic Stetson and you'll be dressed to the nines.
Check out our events calendar (p18-27) for details on the Kentucky Derby festivities at The Decatur Club on May 5.
FOREVER AFTER FASCINATOR When is a Derby Hat not a Hat? When it's a fascinator! These adornments can be added to hats for a custom look or wear them alone for that little extra pizazz.

Mamma Mia! ABBAMANIA brings disco rock to Decatur words by : Joli Hohenstein
Mamma Mia! Here they go again. My, my! What a show this one will be! Lovers of ABBA, the ‘70s and retro kitsch alike, take note! ABBAMANIA is one show you won’t want to miss. Technically a tribute band but no less engaging and electric than the original, they put on a performance worthy of Sweden’s finest. Dancing, singing, and delighting audiences all over the globe, they’re coming down to our very own Decatur for a one-time smash hit production. Called the #1 musical production in the world, they’re a treat for the senses. These Canadians, masquerading as Swedes, performing hits from the ‘70s in the 2000s (get all that?), travel in true troupe style. The four headliners are backed by not just a band but background vocalists and a full 12-piece ensemble, including members of the London, Ontario, Symphony Orchestra. 30 | may 2012
One of the only shows to be invited to the Royal Alexander Theatre in Toronto, they make a splash wherever they go, with authentic costumes and stage performances. The playlist includes 21 of ABBA’s hits, from Waterloo and Voulez-vous to Super Trooper and Mamma Mia. It’s no wonder booking them was a no brainer for Kirkland Fine Arts Center’s Jan Traughber. “They’re wearing the costumes; they’ve got the huge boots; they do an elaborate light show—and they’re just plain fun,” she says. “The vocalists play against one another with the look and feel of a rock band.” And all the excitement and energy of one, plus the electricity of a center stage performance. “There’s just something special about live entertainment,” she says. “People can be more emotionally moved. It’s a spark that can make your day better.” Added to that, ABBA’s unique brand of pop rock is experiencing a new pop culture craze all its own, thanks to the immense popularity of the Mamma Mia! Broadway musical, the movie starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried, and, of course, the everpresent soundtrack.
As adults reminisce, twentysomethings dance it out, and tweens sing their hearts out, Kirkland looks to capture a fresh new audience. “This whole other segment that wouldn’t think of coming to a tribute band will come because of the familiarity of the numbers and the music,” says Jan. “When we ask people what they want, the most common answer is always Broadway. This brings a piece of Broadway at a much more user friendly rate.” True indeed, as the most expensive ticket for ABBAMANIA is $24, and any child can get a $5 ticket. The latter is thanks to Jan’s passion for exposing today’s youth to music and the arts from the beginning. “When children have an opportunity to see live entertainment at a very young age, it plants that seed,” she says. “This is the perfect chance. One of my nieces is a 2nd grader, and she loves the movie, loves the soundtrack, and plays it all the time; she’s so excited for this show.”

continued from page 31 Previous tribute bands have rocked the house and blown away the audience. Almost Elton John had little girls dressing up with Elton’s rose colored glasses and crazy costumes; Twist & Shout brought the Beatles back to the USA to tremendous reviews. With ABBAMANIA, Jan expects to pack the house with cheers higher than the sky high platform boots on stage. “It’s the Saturday before Mother’s Day, so we’d love to see mothers, daughters, aunts, cousins, grandmothers, husbands, and wives coming,” she says. “And if it’s anything like before, grandparents will bring their grandchildren and expose a whole new generation.”
