When someone asks me what I do for THRIVE, I like to say I serve as the proofreader for a small publication with a big impact on answering the question, "But what can we do in Decatur?" I have been a reader all my life and knew from eighth grade that I wanted to be an English teacher. While attending Eureka College confirmed my career choice as an educator, the broader exposure to literature also nurtured my love of the English language and the written word. I am an unapologetic grammarian, the one who drives down the street and nearly off the road at the sight of

a billboard with a typo. The one who finds grammatical errors and comma splices in brochures, magazines and newspapers. (And yes, the one who silently yet thoroughly edits your Facebook posts in her head.) I will happily debate proper punctuation, bemoan usage of its/it's or discuss the validity of the serial comma - even better if we can do it in the context of Dr. Who. In short, this THRIVE gig affords me the opportunity to do what I love - and fund my love of books at the Library book sales.

Farmers' Market The WE Grow Community Garden wrapped up its inaugural West End Farmers' Market season in September. Each week local vendors including Wren's Gate Garden & Studio, Del's Popcorn, Peace, Love & Cookies, and McGrath Farms & Artisan Soap sold their wares and were joined by local artists and musicians.

Over 90 arts and craft vendors gathered indoors and outdoors at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel on September 9th. Market attendees were treated to unique shopping, eating, musical entertainment and a live auction.

Timbuktu patrons took to the dance floor during The NATU Band's show in September. Natu Visinia, pro-boxer turned country rock singer/songwriter, was joined by several Decatur-based musicians who covered songs by Zac Brown, AC/DC, and Jason Aldean as well as original songs such as "Wild Turkey Style."

Stretch Summer with Stargazing and More Lincoln Homestead end-of-season event engages with live music, classic cookout Ah, summer—the warm weather, the freedom, the cookouts...all of those things are distant memories now, right? But wait! You still have one last chance to enjoy the best of summer at the Lincoln Trail Homestead's End-of-Season Cookout, scheduled for October 7 from 6 to 8 pm. The Lincoln Trail Homestead is one of Macon County's hidden gems, just 10 miles west of Decatur by the Sangamon River. Jeff Tish, First Vice President of the Community Environmental Council, oversees this event, as well as the many other events at the Homestead. The Community Environmental Council works in conjunction with the Friends of Lincoln Trail Homestead, a volunteer group that is working to bring historic preservation of the site to the same standards as other Lincoln sites in Illinois and to raise awareness about its offerings. “The Homestead is approximately 140 acres of beautiful park and forest area, with kayak, canoe and fishing access to the Sangamon River, hiking trails, a playground and pavilions for parties and events,” he says. “The Friends of Lincoln Trail Homestead has worked hard to restore and beautify this site and host activities there.” The End-of-Season Cookout features a free meal with classic cookout food, including hamburgers, hot dogs and chips, and the ambiance will be Photo by: Astrosystem / Fotolia.com

After the sun sets, Jeff will lead a stargazing session, pointing out the visible constellations. You might also bump into other members of the Friends of Lincoln Trail Homestead there as well, as they’re passionate about attending events. “We want to have someone there personally, to open people's minds and hearts to this special place,” says Jeff. Through events like the End-ofSummer Cookout, he hopes to raise community awareness about all the Lincoln Homestead has to offer. “It's so important for all of us to get out into nature, and this is such a great place to do it.”

Kinnie Pop’s Chicken Cuug Fresh unique flavors. Made-to-order pipinghot wings and fries. Homestyle classics. A fresh take on a timeless dessert. And what can only be described as the best of southern hospitality (even here in the Midwest) is what you’ll find at my new favorite family-run restaurant, Kinnie Pop’s Chicken Cuug. After hearing high praises from a friend, I was intrigued to learn there was, indeed, a restaurant tucked back in the far corner of Woodmound Plaza! Just walking in the door brought a smile to my face and got me excited for my meal. Not much beats a genuinely excited, warm welcome and hello, and that’s what you’ll find greeting you here. Before tucking into some comfort food classics, you might, like me, be interested in the story behind that unique logo (a butterfly) and name. I found out each element has a family tie. I learned from talking with the owner’s daughter that Kinnie Pop was her grandmother’s nickname for her mom, who is the artist behind the butterfly logo. And that ‘chicken cuug’ is an homage to how her grandmother said “chicken coop.” Having become a frequent visitor already, I can tell you that while a few cozy booths welcome you to stay and dine, the majority of patrons opt for the carry-out option. With everything made fresh to order, the ability to call ahead can save you a 10-15-minute wait. But, oh, is it ever worth the wait! Sure, they could likely fry batches of wings and fries to speed up the time, but you’d miss out on the HOT fresh flavors that I’ve come to love here.

Their most unique flavor has to be the Big Hen. This is a one-of-a-kind combination of nacho cheese/buffalo sauce spun wings with a ranch dressing drizzle that encompasses all the best flavors in one power-packed wing sauce. I’d suggest going boneless here just for logistics’ sake, or grab that stack of extra napkins and consider a bib. Despite an offering of 31 different flavors (they’re nearly the Baskin Robbins of wings here), I cannot get myself away from the first flavor I sampled, which was the Spicy Honey Pop. It has the perfect mix of sweet honey with a kick (or without if you just want to go with the Honey Pop). While they boast a simple menu with traditional and boneless wings, plus a choice of classic sides like fries, potato salad or coleslaw, they do those flavors so well you’ll be coming back for more of the same OR (unlike me) mixing it up every time with a brand new sauce. One thing you won’t want to skip, though, are the funnel cake fries! Everything you love about this sweet fair classic in an easy-to-munch fry form. Good luck getting these all the way home without munching a few; bet you can’t do it! Romp with Rocky Horror at The Avon

Annual audience participation extravaganza amps up a classic It’s been 10 years since a group of Millikin University students known as Shadow Cast reached out to the iconic Avon Theatre in Decatur about bringing a well-known cult movie classic a little more to life for audiences. If you haven’t already been, every October over the last decade The Avon has shown The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but with a twist. If you’re expecting the expected or you want to enjoy the movie in peace and solitude (in order to actually hear the lines), then this may not be your shtick. But if you love fun, dressing up, audience participation and seeing some skin—make sure you check out The Avon’s Facebook page for information on advanced ticket sales on two showings, October 20 and 21 at midnight. Tickets are $10. While you’re welcome to show up beforehand for fun and games with members of Shadow Cast, just remember that no outside food or beverages will be allowed inside the theatre (even if you were planning on using them as props). “Everyone should experience Rocky Horror the way The Avon does it at least once in their life,” says Avon Theatre owner and “Head Honcho” Skip Huston. “And if you come, be prepared to be a little shocked. But, if you can get past that, you’re gonna have a lot of fun!” He says people ask whether it’s a play or a movie, and he has to tell them: “It’s both!” So, what can you expect if you go? For many participants, this isn’t their first Rocky Horror rodeo, but don’t let that intimidate you because it really is a heck of a lot of fun! You’ll also be seeing quite a bit of skin (think: sexy lingerie). Skip, who maintains a loyal staff, says the lovely ladies who work for him attempt to outdo each other every year with their costume choices (typically as bare as they dare). If you love delicious BBQ, car shows and live music, now is your chance to attend an event that features all three! The Decatur Smokin’ BBQ Festival will include a BBQ competition, food vendors, live music and a car show. But wait, that’s not all—the event will also have beer, wine and bourbon tastings. To start, this is a BBQ competition featuring everything from pit masters to amateurs. “Our goal is to give you the best culinary experience with different BBQ items. With different vendors we will be able to give that incredible experience,” says organizer LaVell Peete. The competition will be broken up into three categories: Pro Division, Backyard and People’s Choice. Pro Division includes a team or an individual who has competed before or is a restaurant owner. The cost to enter the pro division will be $275, and competitors will be tested on a Master’s series, which consists of brisket, pork ribs, pork butt and chicken. Pro teams compete for a $10,000 cash purse that breaks down to the top 10 teams. The Backyard division is for amateurs; this means you have not competed before. If you enter this division, you will be judged by a Kansas City BBQ Society official judge. If you win the Backyard division, you get an automatic FREE entry into the Pro Division next year. The People’s Choice category is where the community can really get involved! This division is sponsored by MJ Kellner Food Service. They’re donating four racks of ribs for up to 40 teams. Run the Runway Third Annual Scareport Race Hit the road for Illinois’ only lights out airport 5/10K By Abi McIntosh Picture it: Halloween-costumed runners run down an airport runway guided by glow lights, headlamps and runway and taxiway lights. Now see it and be part of it at Scareport: Run the Runway, the only lights-out 5K and 10K race on an airport runway in Illinois! Running at the airport is an uncommon experience. Stepping on an airport runway is unique in itself, but being there in the dark, with the runway and taxiway lights on: well, it’s just cool. (Headlamps are recommended and will be available for sale for $1 if needed.) The course offers the added benefit of being flat and fast. Top finishers of the men’s/women’s 5K and 10K receive the Runway Light award. Runners receive a glow-in-the-dark medal and long-sleeved tech tee (if registered by October 9). Also, the event is on the Decatur Running Club’s 2017 Grand Slam Medal Series as a Wild Card. It’s definitely family-friendly, with a DJ, photo booth, prizes and food. Parents can watch or walk/run with their children during the Tot Trot and then run the 5K or 10K if they choose. 1-mile/Tot Trot participants receive glow 28 | October 2017

necklaces and a Halloween cookie. The event has been timed so that parents can participate in both races if they wish. Costumes make the event more fun, and they’re encouraged but not required, with a few caveats for safety, of course: no bikes, rollerblades, inline skates or pets. Creative costumes over the years have included Pacman, Where’s Waldo, zombies, a bumblebee and an inflatable dinosaur (but no airplanes yet)! Two years ago, Park District staff dressed as characters from Gilligan’s Island. Prizes will be awarded for best costume.
