THRIVE

Greetings from your Eventor! People like to ask lots of questions of the Eventor.... One of the most frequent: Are you The Food Dude (uh, no - I am not). The second most frequent: What is an Eventor... well, let me tell you, an "eventor" is a human aggregator of events (and a completely made-up title). In the beginning days of Thrive we would scour 150+ websites - looking for the most up-to-date events and add them into a Word doc. Not only did that take a lot of time and energy, it didn't allow for updates. Thank goodness we have updated our processes. A couple of years ago we launched electronic submissions. Anyone can create an account (you get to choose the login and password) and submit events for review. From there, my job takes over. I look at each submission, ask questions, tweak descriptions, publish the event to the live site, and make initial decisions on what events make it into the printed magazine. Folks can submit an event anytime they wish for the online calendar - but the print deadline is the 10th of the month preceding the event. Somewhere around the 10th - I grab all the events for the next month... do a little mail merge magic and send the file to the publisher. For all those events that don't make it into print, don't fear, they are used! We have an

event feed on our webpage (www.thrivedecatur. com), and the Limitless Decatur (www.limitlessdecatur. com) site utilizes our event calendar feed. All in all - it takes far less time than it used to... and for that I am grateful.

P.S. A big shoutout needs to go to all (300+) our event contributors... we couldn't do it without them. P.P.S Interested in getting your own RSS feed of the Thrive calendar of events (because let's be honest capturing events is tough)? - contact the publisher (publisher@thrivedecatur.com).

A look back at last month’s happenings

Decatur Lakeside Triathlon

The Decatur Lakeside Triathlon (formerly the Rodney T. Miller Triathlon) hosted its inaugural adult race in Nelson Park on July 9. Almost 150 athletes - some local and some traveling from all over Illinois and other states - participated in the duathlon, triathlon, and aquabike events. Keeping the same route as previous triathlons, city streets along the lakefront were closed and staffed by volunteers and law enforcement to keep the athletes safe.

The Decatur Lakeside Triathlon youth event took place in Chandler Park on July 8. The races were immediately followed by an awards ceremony where athletes received trophies for the top 3 places in age/ gender categories. August 2017 | 05

Decatur Performer Opens Celebration Stage This Summer Jeff Quick is bringing BlueRock to the stage at Decatur Celebration this summer. The unique brand of music came from Jeff’s creative, musical mind. Christian music recording artist, singersongwriter and owner of BlueRock Record studio inside Heroic Age Art Center, Jeff will open for the band Stars Go Dim on the Christian stage. Music called to him by age 10, and by 14 he was playing guitar. Much of his childhood was spent in bands at church. “I have always been able to write little parts of songs, or change lyrics to existing songs,” says Jeff. In his youth he was influenced by everything from country to rock and found himself drawn to bands like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. When writing the songs for his most recent album, he drew inspiration from artists like Mumford and Sons and Needtobreathe. Jeff says the relatable lyrics of his music will resonate with many. “These can be anyone’s stories,” he explains.

10 | August 2017

After writing lyrics, Jeff took his work to DreamVizion Productions here in Decatur and began recording in April 2016. “It’s not your typical Christian worship music,” he says. “I decided to create songs and a sound that has its own rhythmic style, utilizing some elements of blues, jazz and rock but at the same time delivering a Christian message.” He calls his unique style of music BlueRock Christian Music. BlueRock Record was born in 2016 to help launch Jeff’s music. Now BlueRock Record can act as a one-stop shop for live music and event planning. “If a business or venue is looking for live music, they are able to contact us and tell us the type of music they need, and then we set up bands to provide the entertainment, sound, staging, and lighting,” he says. BlueRock Record will be helping songwriters of many other genres publish their music. “Musicians don’t need to travel all the way to Nashville to put out commercial quality music,” says Jeff. “BlueRock Record is striving to show the music industry that there are many amazing things happening right here in Decatur.” Abi McIntosh is a freelance writer.

THE FOOD DUDE

by T. F. DUDE

Locals 101 The restaurant space in Decatur’s One Main Place has seen its fair share of turnover, but Locals 101 Bar & Grille has been going strong for more than a year now. When you walk inside, you’ll see a designated bar to your right. The inside dining area is decorated in sports memorabilia from local teams. Outside, there’s covered patio seating. The weather was so nice that a pal and I opted for a table on the patio, which was packed for lunchtime. Every visit I make to Locals, I order something different simply because of the interesting variety as well as daily specials, but since I’ve been trying to watch my dudeish figure, I ordered a “Locals Specialty”: a club sandwich ($8.99). My friend and I also split a red jalapeño poppers starter ($6.99 for 7). Not as healthy, but how could I resist? You might be asking, “What’s interesting about a club sandwich?” Well, what I like about Locals is they take each dish and give it an upscale “foodie” spin. Not only do you receive big portions, but along with the stack of ham and turkey, you get dill havarti cheese (oh, is there anything better?) and a tasty garlic aioli. It also has lettuce, tomato, crisp bacon, your choice of bread (rye, wheat or sourdough) and one side. I gave up hand-cut fries for cottage cheese.

12 | August 2017

The jalapeño poppers are delicious, too, and have quite the kick. They’re breaded, fried, stuffed with cream cheese and come with a blackberry jam dipping sauce. There are so many options to choose from at Locals: starters, wings, burgers, soups, salads, sandwiches, smothered fries, mouth-watering “shoes,” seafood, chicken and steak. It’s a place you could bring picky eaters, and there would be something for them on the menu. If you’re downtown and looking for food that’s just a little different than the norm, be sure to check out Locals 101.

Decatur Celebration Gets Wreckless (Whiskey) With a flair for modern country music, the occasional Southern rock throwback and even an original tune to round out its set lists, Wreckless Whiskey has been a local favorite since it formed in 2016. Last year, the group opened for Thompson Square at the Decatur Celebration, and—thanks to an overwhelmingly positive reception by fans— Wreckless Whiskey will open at this year’s Celebration for country megastar Travis Tritt on Friday, August 4, at 7 pm. Wreckless Whiskey might seem like a young band. Even its name reflects a certain rebellious youthfulness (and a love of Jack Daniels, according to the band), but its five members have a storied history of performing throughout Central Illinois and the Midwest. In 2015, lead vocalist Blake Harned won the 95Q Country Idol contest. Blake and Dustin Bradshaw, the band’s bass guitarist, met while Dustin was road manager for Mt. Zionbased band Third Shift. Dalton Goebel, who played rhythm guitar for Third Shift, was next to join. More recent additions include guitarist Jack Mahoney, a Millikin University student majoring in music business, and Kevin Wortman, who was recruited this summer as the new drummer. Kevin previously played with Christian band Day 40. So, what can you expect from a Wreckless Whiskey show? “We try to give the best high-energy experience to our fans each and every time we 14 | August 2017

take the stage, no matter which venue it is, big or small,” was the band’s collective answer. They also like to switch things up musically, so don’t expect to hear the same set list twice. “We’re constantly looking at what the fans will enjoy and what covers we can do that will impact the crowds the most,” they said. “Our covers mainly symbolize a country rock feel with a few throwbacks, as well as a couple cross-genre medleys. Any given night you are sure to hear a handful of original music either written by the members of the band or friends of ours from Nashville.” The band has been inspired by a variety of artists: Jason Aldean, Frankie Ballard, Randy Houser, Blackberry Smoke and Lynyrd Skynyrd. They also gave a shoutout to Nashville’s The Cadillac Three, whose lead singer, Jaren Johnston, co-wrote one of their original songs, and to all of their supporters: “We truly have been blessed with our friends, family, management and fans over the past year, and we can't say thank you enough to everyone involved with the quick success we've had!” CONNECT WITH THE BAND Facebook: facebook.com/wrecklesswhiskey Snapchat & Instagram @wrcklesswhiskey Website: wrecklesswhiskeyband.com Booking info: bhandwrecklesswhiskey@ gmail.com Beth DeBouck is a freelance writer.

Lace up your comfy shoes, lather on the sunscreen, and head out to Progress City for the nation’s largest outdoor farming event. From August 29-31 the Farm Progress Show (FPS) returns to Decatur for the show’s 64th year. FPS has streamlined a clean, fun, family-friendly experience that brings hundreds of thousands to our neighborhood every other harvest. So what keeps them coming back? Technology advancements, manufacturing innovation, seed ingenuity…and fun! The show is bursting with exciting nuggets for every age group around every corner. Each vendor booth, and there are hundreds of them, hosts a different opportunity to listen, learn and explore.

16 | August 2017

Listen Local and nationwide broadcast coverage will be live from the show featuring new products and practices. Stop by WANDTV (booth 344) or RFD-TV (booth 1112) to learn about the hot spots on site, or tune in before you hit the show to map out your day. Partners in Conservation (booth 26E) is featuring guest speaker Gabe Brown, one of the pioneers of the soil health movement. Gabe’s methods have regenerated the natural resources on his family’s 5,000-acre farm without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and fungicides. Farm Credit of Illinois (booth 763) is hosting Americana band Jericho Woods for a total of 10 free performances throughout the show. Jericho Woods, based in Kentucky, was selected as Kentucky’s Favorite Performing Band for 2016 by the readers of Kentucky Living Magazine. Shows start at 10 am Tuesday and wrap up Thursday at 1 pm.

Learn Agriculture creates the landscape of our community. It’s difficult to look around and not see the influence, but can you see the bigger picture? FS (booth 1233) is creating that visual through its #FSBIGPIC project. Guests bring a photo of their view of agriculture, and it will be included as a small piece of a large mosaic artwork. Don’t have a photo? You can still leave your mark on FS’s Tag-Ag Culture Wall. Visitors can spray-paint ag-inspired stencils on the multi-surface wall, or even create their own art. The Grain Handling Safety Coalition (booth 633) partnered with the Illinois FFA Association to create a grain safety scavenger hunt directed toward youth attending the show. Strategically placed displays with information about grain handling safety are positioned around the show grounds. Participants go to each display to learn about and answer a question about grain safety.

Explore The biggest, and we mean biggest, fun is being able to climb in the huge equipment and see all the different types of machinery that perform each agricultural task. Touch and feel, measure up and imagine…then head to the harvest demos to see your favorite equipment in action. Want to see how far we’ve come? Stop by Case IH (booth 867) to view vintage equipment as the company celebrates 175 years of agricultural equipment production. And don’t miss Antique Row on the southwest fence, featuring a variety of collectors clubs. These clubs offer decades, nay, centuries, of history to any willing ear.

18 | August August2017 2017

If expanding your mind gets a little overwhelming, chill out by dropping by the Illinois Farm Bureau (booth 753) for some free ice cream. Lactose-intolerant? Local manufacturer GSI (booth 959) will be giving away free bottles of water. Don’t forget to bring your wagon or grab a bag early because many booths offer free giveaway items to help you remember your time at FPS. Either way, you won’t leave empty handed or minded!

Hikes, concerts help commune with nature Written by Angela Myers Richie Wolf almost didn’t see the tiny deer fawn lying curled up in the bushes at his feet. It lay perfectly still, and its white-speckled coat nearly disappeared into the shadows of the forest. It’s almost invisible even in the photo on his phone. As manager of Rock Springs Nature Center, Richie walks the trails in the Conservation Area every day during his lunch break, and the fawn is just one of a long list of wildlife he’s sighted. “I walk the pine forest and I go down by the cattail ponds,” he says. “I love to watch the frogs, the birds. Anytime you can get near water, it’s good for wildlife.” The pine forest trail winds through an artificial habitat planted by the former owners of the land, so it isn’t the best example of prairie ecology. Although it isn’t an official trail, it’s the most popular walk in the Rock Springs Conservation Area. It’s very quiet and serene, Richie says, and hikers don’t have to worry about poison ivy or briars. The most popular official trail is a partnership between the Macon County Conservation District and the Decatur Park District. The paved trail winds from Nearing Lane in front of the Rock Springs Nature Center to Fairview Park through several different habitat types— woodlands, prairies, and wetlands. Called the Bike Trail, it’s actually a multi-use, handicappedaccessible trail for walking, running, bicycling, rollerblading and skate boarding. Sighting deer is almost guaranteed, Richie says, adding that they aren’t even skittish because they’re so used to people. River Trail is the longest continuous trail in the Conservation Area. It goes down by the historic Rock Springs Bottling Plant that gave the center its name and follows the Sangamon River where a lumber and gristmill once stood. The timbers are still there.

“It’s more challenging,” he says. “It’s about a two-hour walk. Some of the topography might make you question if you’re still in Macon County.” Other trails in the Conservation Area take hikers through woodlands, prairie grass and wildflowers, deciduous woods with deer, owls and woodpeckers, and the Rodney T. Miller Wetland. The trails offer new and interesting hikes with each season, and guided hikes are sometimes offered. August holds one the most unique annual events for Rock Springs: The Hummingbird Festival. Participants may adopt a hummingbird, watch the banding process, and help release a live hummingbird back into the wild. In the fall, the foliage takes on magnificent color, Richie says, and when winter brings snow, hikers can rent cross-country skis for exercise and a new way to see the Conservation Area. Rock Springs Nature Center also offers exhibits by local artists and educational exhibits and lectures. This year the center is presenting a summer concert series. THRIVE Q&A

JEFF SMITH

WHY WE SHOULDN’T MISS THE FARM PROGRESS SHOW

Photo: Sarah Jane

Every two years, the World’s Fair of Agriculture, the Farm Progress Show, comes to Decatur. It’s the nation’s largest outdoor farm event and a site to behold. But it’s not just for farmers and ag industry advocates. As Jeff Smith, regional sales manager for the Farm Progress Show and a longtime Decaturite, says, we all have to eat – and thus we’re all tied to farming and food production in some way. So we asked him, what’s the best way to see the Farm Progress Show – and what’s not to be missed?

FAVORITE THING TO DO IN SUMMER IN MACON COUNTY

My wife Debi and I are road bike enthusiasts and love to ride in rural Macon County by ourselves or with a group. Whether a quick 15-mile loop or 60-mile marathon, riding provides great outdoor scenery and beneficial exercise. We enjoy the sponsored biking events in Macon County, such as Ride United, Tour de Paws and Prairie Pedal, where most of the entry proceeds help fund these organizations.

MOST UNEXPECTED THING TO DO IN MACON COUNTY

Volunteer! I see so many events, including the Farm Progress Show, where people in Macon County assist with time and talent to help at an event or organized activity. Taking time off work or giving up a weekend to provide help to an organization of choice is a real “feel good” for anyone.

Everyone must eat. We are all part of the food cycle. The Farm Progress Show is the event that shows off the latest and greatest technology that is used at the beginning of the food production process. For most people in Central Illinois, you do not have to go back too many generations to know a farmer and farm family. The show really demonstrates the difference in agriculture between earlier generations of farming and food production today.

YOUR FAVORITE FOOD AT THE FARM PROGRESS SHOW

When it is 90 degrees at 3 pm – home-made ice cream. But in reality, it is all good, cooked just in time and served by all those great volunteers.

SOMETHING ABOUT THE FARM PROGRESS SHOW THAT WOULD SURPRISE US

The Farm Progress Show is the largest gathering of agriculture media in the world. And typically, we have visitors from over 50 foreign countries. We have held the event for 64 years, and at the 2017 Decatur site you would need to walk over 6 miles of streets to see every vendor. (You will want that ice cream at 3:00.)

WHAT’S NEW THIS YEAR FOR FARM PROGRESS SHOW

A few exhibitors put up new permanent structures earlier this year. There are always new product introductions from many of the major equipment companies. Look for something really special and very creative from one or more of our exhibitors. There will be plenty of new agriculture technologies on display.
