Knockerball Max - A Whole New Ball Game! Are you ready to get in the ball? Knockerball is finally here! The concept is simple: Get in an inflatable ball and roll, flip and bump into other people. You can also play organized games like KnockerSoccer or Combat Knockerball, but the real enjoyment is from defying gravity and laughing at your competitors. Dan Nash, owner of Knockerball Max, says Knockerball has really taken off – it’s a big hit at fairs, festivals and Illini football games – and Hickory Point Mall has the biggest indoor Knockerball area in the country! “This community is amazing, embracing Knockerball, and definitely surpassed our expectations… I believe there are a lot of positive things going on in Decatur and Macon County; the quality of life here is good,” says Dan. Knockerball is popping up all over the country, with more than 300 affiliates in the US! Anyone from ages 2-92 who can walk can participate, and different sized balls are available for different sized people. You can play organized games like KombatBow Archery Tag or Knockerball Football, rent out the space for a party or event or just come to have a great time and knock your friends down! And if you want to really get the ball rolling (or sliding), try Knockerball… On Ice! At the Decatur Civic Center, you can get into a Knockerball and play on the ice. For one hour every Sunday through March, Knockerball will be open to the public at the Decatur Civic Center. Want to try before you slide (or play Knocker Hockey)? Check out a video of Knockerball on Ice at the mall location. On the ice, you can go faster, but it will be a little colder. With traditional play, you have
a little more room to move around, but both are equally as fun. What’s it like? Imagine you’re in a giant bubble of saran wrap. The primary focus of Knockerball Max is to keep you safe and have fun. Be sure to keep an eye out for Knockerball tournaments on weeknights—fun for all ages!

THE FOOD DUDE
by T. F. DUDE
Feel the burn at India's Kitchen As I was still mourning the loss of my beloved Tandoor Indian Grill, I saw a beacon of light on Pershing Road with a sign that said, “Coming Soon--India’s Kitchen!” I was ecstatic. I was also thrilled to find out there would be a buffet not only for lunch but also for dinner, and this opportunity made me a very happy dude. I immediately made plans for my first visit. Upon arrival, my “dudes” and I were warmly greeted by a friendly gentleman in a turban, who quickly escorted us to a table. We ordered our drinks, and without hesitation, we were off to the buffet. For starters there were a couple of appetizer options like Veg Samosa, potatoes and green peas floured and fried, and Fish Pakora, a crispy battered fish. Both were very tasty. Moving on to the main course options, I was delighted to find several to choose from. Tandoori Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Vindaloo and Goat Curry were dishes for the carnivores, but there are also several vegetarian options such as Kadi Pakora, crispy battered veggies cooked in yogurt and spices, Saag Paneer, homemade cheese cooked in spinach, greens and cream, and Malai Kofta, mixed veggies and cheese balls cooked in a creamy sauce. And don’t forget the rice, lots of rice! Last but not least, my very favorite thing on earth, the naan. Naan, a flatbread cooked in a tandoor oven, is warm and fresh and is worth every, single, carb.
10 | January 2018
They also offer a small salad bar with lettuce, fruits and several sauces along with rice pudding and Gulab Jamun (cheese balls cooked in sugar) for dessert. I didn’t have room on my plate for everything, but what I did sample was delicious, and I knew immediately that I would be a regular customer, no doubt about it. For those of you who have never tried Indian cuisine, don’t be afraid. A buffet is a great way to sample a lot of different flavors and see what dishes you like. For beginners, I recommend the Chicken Tikka Masala or the Chicken Vindaloo, which have a little kick to them as far as spice and just enough cilantro to make these two dishes my very favorites. Spoon these over a bed of rice, and you can’t go wrong. Another perk to India’s Kitchen is that you can order take-out quickly and easily with online ordering or by using the app Khana2Go. Just choose from the extensive menu and pick up your order within minutes. Easy peasy. If you’re in the mood for something different and a little spicy, let India’s Kitchen do the cooking. And don’t forget the naan!! GET THERE India's Kitchen 2912 N. Martin Luther King Dr., Decatur 706-5111, www.decaturindian.com Open every day 11a - 3p & 4:30p - 9:00p

WILDCARD
by Caroline Bruder
4D Fun with Mark Nizer & Kirkland Mark Nizer, an accomplished performer who has been wowing audiences the world over for years, is used to delivering the so-called impossible to mesmerized audiences—in fact, he began his act as a child. Describing that act, though, is a little more complicated. You could start by noting that Mark is an accomplished juggler, who began juggling as a child when his mother signed him up for lessons. After he became a whiz at juggling balls, he began to juggle “crazier and crazier” items, including electric carving knives (turned on), a bowling ball and even a propane tank. “My friends in high school would say, ‘Hey Mark, juggle this,’” he says. “I was always up for the challenge.” Mark worked in a hardware store in high school and scanned the aisles looking for things to juggle. “That’s how I landed on the electric carving knife,” he laughs. While attending college, Mark took his act to the streets, incorporating his natural affinity for comedy into his juggling routine. He went on to win a talent contest—“sort of the early version of Star Search,” he says—and began performing for bigger and bigger audiences, alongside performers like Bob Hope and Ray Charles.
Currently, Mark’s act, “Mark Nizer 4D: Expect the Impossible!” features much more than juggling crazy items: He incorporates comedy, technology and visuals into the act. Every audience member gets a pair of special 3D glasses that shift the way they see the colors Mark uses in his show. For example, the color red appears in the foreground of the audience’s vision, the color blue appears in the background, and the color green appears in the middle. This makes for a wild visual experience when Mark juggles blue and red objects while also using a green laser. “I also juggle a metal pipe filled with sensors that connect to audience members' phones, and the phones all sync and become part of the light show,” he explains. Like we said, expect the impossible! GET THERE Mark Nizer 4D: The Only Live 3D Show in the World Kirkland Fine Arts Center January 27, 2018 7:30 pm Tickets $15/$20/$25. Conversation with A Picker Written by Olivia Jones
Picking…that art of hunting flea markets, antique shops and thrift stores for those unique finds made wildly popular by shows like American Pickers and Junk Gypsies, and a favorite pastime for hundreds of Decaturites. But how do you find the honey spots? Natalie McKee has been combing the county for years, turning trash into treasure. We asked for her local-made tips and tricks for finding that diamond in the rough.
There’s something about the thrill of hunting through flea markets and antique shops to find those one of a kind pieces that appeals to all of us. For Natalie, it started out when, as a newborn photographer, she was trying to find vintage pieces for unique setups. “When I’m out antiquing, people often ask what I’m going to do with the items I just purchased. I always reply, 'I’m going to put a baby in it,'” Natalie says. “They look at me crazy until I explain I’m a photographer, and these items are one-a-kind statement pieces for sessions.”
14 | January 2018
Natalie says she’s hit over 100 antique stores, thrift stores and flea markets across the Midwest this year alone. With all that experience we were eager to find out her top secrets. She always recommends attending 3rd Sunday Market, which runs May through October at Decatur’s Progress City. Another tip: “One secret I would say is to keep up with your local antique dealers. A lot of the places in town have a little book to write down what you are looking for, so if they find an item

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 15 they can tell you,” Natalie says. “Also sometimes it’s the luck of the find and if the picker gods are in your favor.” Some of her favorite shops are the Raspberry Tea Room in Elwin and Never Forgotten Thymes in downtown Decatur. Her favorite find to date is an old iron crib, which came from Never Forgotten Thymes. While some people refurbish finds, McKee likes the wear and tear that give the item character. “I don’t refurbish anything unless the item I’m going to use is super rusted out and would look cute painted.” Natalie doesn’t personally keep every find; she resells them to newborn photographers around the world. “I pick for my customer; I pair the item with other items for the perfect photo setup,” she explains. Natalie started her resale business in 2012 making her own headbands and then began to shop around to find props that would photograph well with a baby. “I was in a few photography groups, and people wanted to know where I found all my goodies,” she says. “I would share, and they’d want me to hunt for them and ship it.” She encourages people interested in picking to make sure to scout their local area and become friends with the dealers. They’re there to help you find what you’re looking for. Natalie saved the best piece of advice for last: “Make sure you’re ready to dig,” she says. “Some items I’ve found have been buried under a pile of other items. And bring a partner! That will help put more eyes out.”

Are You the Next Yoga Athlete? Written by Beth DeBouck | Photos by Sarah Jane If this was a stressful holiday season (or year) for you or if you’ve made the New Year’s resolution to get in better shape, yoga is a great go-to option for real results. Yoga is accessible to people of all ages, backgrounds and experience levels. Whether you’re looking for some mindful relaxation techniques or want to build flexibility and strength, yoga provides a variety of health benefits. While the area has some wonderful, already-established yogis, one of the newest additions is Josh Manning’s The Yoga Athlete, which opened in September in Forsyth. “I think everyone is an athlete, and I’ve found yoga to be ideal for developing strength, balance and flexibility. It is perfect for enabling our bodies to function at their highest level,” says Josh, who has a background in teaching and athletics. “If you play football, baseball or tennis, yoga will help improve your
28 | January 2018
performance. If you are an avid bowler, shoot pool, lift weights, play basketball—yoga will improve your performance.” Josh has practiced yoga for 10 years, has a certification in strength and conditioning and is working on a 300-hour power yoga certification. He’s taught yoga six years, including a stint at Awakened Yoga Studio in Decatur. He’s also led sessions at Body of Bloomington, taught yoga to high school and junior high students and instructed college athletic teams and pro athletes. Classes at The Yoga Athlete are held Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Choices include hot power yoga, all-levels yoga, kids’ yoga and beginners’ yoga. For a full list of session times, check out The Yoga Athlete’s Facebook page. You can sign up as late as just 5 minutes before a session. Mats are provided, as well as blocks or foam rollers.
“The beginners class is ideal for anyone wanting a slower, gentle stretch,” explains Josh. “It’s a good fit for people with certain limitations, as well. The kids’ classes are for kids and parents. The younger they are exposed to practicing yoga, the more consistent they will practice in the future, even if that means they return to it later as adults. The all-levels class is just that, but for an hour. I try to push the group, yet make it accessible for everyone. The hot power classes are a bit warmer than the others, and we try to push ourselves to our edge during class.”

If you’ve been a skeptic of yoga despite how long it’s been popular, just remember it’s as physical as it is mental, with actual benefits for those suffering from certain body pains.

THE YOGA ATHLETE FROM PAGE 29 “I have had new clients over the years return after an initial class and report enormous changes for the better in regards to knee, hip and joint pain, sleep patterns and overall well-being,” he says. “I feel those individuals buy in immediately because they can feel an immediate result.” In addition to yoga classes, Josh also offers sports enhancement sessions at the studio. They’re an hour long and for athletes ages 8+. The next session begins January 7 and lasts eight weeks. Focus is on footwork, balance, strength, explosiveness and flexibility. The cost of the 8-week session is $60. Each participant will also receive two free yoga sessions. “Everyone’s story is different,” says Josh, “but if practiced regularly, yoga can be a great piece to add to your everyday lifestyle and something you look forward to on a weekly, if not daily, basis.”

THRIVE Q&A
LISA MILOSER
Hockey fans are a different breed. Heck, truth be told, some say you’ve got to have ice in your veins to be a hockey family. Certainly the Decatur Flames and their vast and growing following prove there’s something to getting in on the action on ice. We wondered, among the plains of the prairie, how do you get hockey fever – and what does it take to be the ultimate fan? So we asked the greatest fan of all – a hockey mom. In this case we tapped Lisa Miloser, a stylist by day, whose son Dakota plays center and wing for the Decatur Flames high school team.
