Finders Keepers Six years ago, local Decaturite Joy Snow was informed that her corporate position was being eliminated. As she was contemplating the next chapter of her life, she sought sunshine and treated herself with a trip to Florida. While visiting, she stumbled upon an area flea market and had such a great time perusing its finds that she thought to herself, Macon County needs something like this! “I did research with three different markets trying to determine what type of market I wanted to have,” says Joy. “A specialized market? A vintage market? I essentially wanted something in the middle that put a spotlight on small business owners and gave them the opportunity to promote their businesses.” Her idea turned into Finders Market.

Finders Fall Market

On Saturday, September 9, the Finders Fall Market will take place from 9 am to 3 pm at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel. The shopping event will be both inside and outside with 80-plus handpicked vendors in attendance showcasing their goods for sale. An array of activities scheduled throughout the day includes live music, door prizes, food trucks outside and a cash bar with food options inside

its venue. One exciting new feature is the live tailgate auction performed by Cody Redman Auctioneer Service.

Finders Holiday Market

Same time, same place, but different day… The Finders Holiday Market will be Saturday, October 14. All the wonders of Fall Market return for the Holiday Market. The only major difference between the two is that the Finders Fall Market will have things for Halloween and Thanksgiving, while the Finders Holiday Market will have items more related to Jolly Old Saint Nick’s favorite holiday—Christmas. The auction is tentatively being scheduled for this event, too.

THE FOOD DUDE

by T. F. DUDE

Door 4 Brewing Co. Food Truck I spy with my little eye… a big green logo on the side of a truck. It’s almost noon; I smell BBQ, and the window is open… I just might be in luck! Parked outside of Woody’s Bar, Door 4 Brewing Co. Food Truck is open for business and serving the tastiest sandwiches, sides and other treats that will be sure to have your taste buds watering. Being the avid fan of pulled pork that I am, I was instantly drawn to the smell of the grill. However, once I got up to the window and took a glance at the menu, things became more difficult. I guess that’s the great thing about a food truck—options! Door 4 Brewing Co. Food Truck has unique choices that cater to a variety of appetites: pulled pork sandwiches, a savory Angus burger, fresh grilled chicken salad and other made-toorder menu items. I decided to change up my go-to pulled pork sandwich and went with the Korean BBQ tacos. It was tangy, it was crunchy, and what made it five stars was the chipotle BBQ sauce. If you’re familiar with the local flair, you know you can’t pass up the opportunity for smothered taters. Yup, I said it. Smothered taters, also known as waffle fries covered in

melted cheese and bacon bits, are an option on the Door 4 Brewing Co. Food Truck’s menu. Another hot commodity is the unique BBQ sauces: classic, mustard, Korean… again, options! Affordable prices, great service and a delicious lunch made for a perfect summer afternoon. What I am really looking forward to is when the truck will be found outside Door 4 Brewing Co., which is set to open later this summer at 1214 W. Cerro Gordo St. in Decatur. Seasoned to perfection BBQ; cold craft beer; and a unique, fun atmosphere—I’m already getting excited! GET THERE Door 4 Brewing Co. Food Truck 1190 W. BLUES & BREWS FEST Blues and Brews Fest Strikes the Right Note in Mt. Zion Blues and brews are coming to Mt. Zion’s Fletcher Park in the form of a brand-new festival on Saturday, September 30. Fletcher Park has been hosting the Chill on the Hill outdoor concert series for the past couple of summers, bringing the community together for good music and good times. Even though the kids are going back to school and the leaves are starting to change, the fun doesn’t have to stop! At the new Blues & Brews Fest, Saturday in the park will be full of soulful sound, with a variety of styles appealing to audiences young and old. Kilborn Alley Blues kick off the afternoon at 12 pm, followed by sweet sounds of Mary Jo Curry. A returning visitor to Fletcher Park, James Armstrong will serenade the crowd into the evening, and the phenomenal Ghost Town Blues Band will cap off the night. Presented by the Village of Mount Zion, Neuhoff Media, Skeff Distributing and the Thrive Entertainment Guide, the festival opens its gates at 12 pm, with all-day wristbands available for only $8. Kids under 4 are free. The Gin Mill will be serving delicious customized menu items that will give you that down-home, Cajun, Memphis feel. Skeff 14 | September 2017

Distributing will also be serving wine and craft and domestic beers for purchase by adults. “The music will stir your soul, and you can dance, listen, enjoy yourself and have fun,” says Kelly Edwards, founder of the event. “We are a small town with a big city feel.” The bands will interact with the crowd, and it’s a family-friendly event, so everyone is welcome and bound to have an exciting time! Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, family and friends, come out for a relaxing, fun day, and enjoy the summer blues! GET THERE Blues & Brews Fest September 30 Fletcher Park, Mt. It’s back! After last year’s successful event, which sold over 700 tickets, the Decatur Craft Beer Festival will return to its downtown location on September 30. A couple of things are new this year, including a collaboration between last year’s organizer Macon Resources, Inc. (MRI) and Decatur Area Arts Council (DAAC). This synergistic team-up has enabled the two non-profit groups to expand the event and make it an even better experience than the last. Although the beer is certainly at the center of the Decatur Craft Beer Festival, this is an important fundraising opportunity for two local, amazing non-profit organizations. MRI provides services that promote independence in children and adults who have disabilities; DAAC is involved with introducing and promoting the arts through arts education programs and generally making the arts more accessible to the entire community.

CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL FROM PAGE 17 MRI Executive Director Amy Bliefnick and DAAC Executive Director Jerry Johnson were kind enough to walk me through what to expect at this year’s festival, which will include the addition of an extra VIP event to be held September 29 on the third floor of the Madden Arts Center. VIP tickets sold for $100, and only 100 were up for grabs. Not only does the VIP ticket include admission to Saturday’s event, but on Friday, ticket holders will be able to sample from a rare selection of beers and ciders, enjoy hors d’oeuvres, and receive a VIP goodie bag, souvenir glass, extra tasting tickets, and a chance to bid on exclusive auction items. General admission tickets will be sold in advance on the website or on the day of the event for $25. You’ll receive admission to the festival, as well as a commemorative tasting glass and eight tasting tickets. Each tasting ticket will earn you a 3 oz. sample. Many of the craft beers and ciders will be on tap, and members of Decatur’s Full Volume home brew club will be working the pouring stations. Bottled and can options will also be available. Over a dozen Central Illinois breweries are expected to participate, and you’ll get a chance to taste from over 100 craft beers and ciders. Additional tasting tickets can be purchased for $1 each. Anyone attending as a designated driver can purchase a reduced general admission ticket for $10. For drinkers and non-drinkers alike, expect live music from local bands throughout the day. Food trucks

will be on standby to soothe your hunger pains. A few of those vendors will be Door 4 Brewing Co., Casa Fuentes and a jumbo tenderloin food truck. “What makes an event like this so great,” said MRI and DAAC executive directors Amy and Jerry, “is that it provides a fun, unique opportunity for members of the Decatur community to support two great organizations and hopefully learn more about them in the process. At MRI, the proceeds will fund important programs such as autism therapy for children, community-based development training for adults, and job training for adults with disabilities. At the DAAC, proceeds will go toward sustaining and enhancing its many arts programs, which include low-cost art classes for all ages, monthly gallery exhibits in the Anne Lloyd Gallery, and the Performing Arts Series for Students (PASS) that serves approximately 8,000 kids each year.”

Arts, Animals and Entertainment in Argenta Written by Angela Myers “I don’t do dunk tanks,” said Mayor Cindy Luedke of Argenta. But that’s OK. Ron Grider, member of the festival committee, was just kidding when he volunteered her. Mostly. He wasn’t kidding about all the attractions that will be part of the Argenta Autumn Art and Animal Festival on September 9, though. Brenda Grider is event coordinator, and she has lots of fun scheduled. “We have horse and buggy rides this year, and free pony rides and bounce houses for the kids,” she said. The couple continued, taking turns naming the events: walking tacos and strawberry shortcake served by the ladies of the Methodist church… “…for a donation to the Argenta Methodist Food Pantry,” said Brenda. …an ice cream truck… “We’re working on a food truck,” added Ron. …a cakewalk, and vendors.

The vendors come from as far away as Bloomington, Mattoon, Champaign and Taylorville to sell a wide variety of treasures— repurposed items, handmade candles and jewelry, kitchen goods, burlap wreaths, cleaning products, local honey, Amish foods, books and flea market items. One vendor sells Argenta-Oreana mascot costumes for pets. Vendors can be added at almost the last minute, so the variety continues to grow. When vendors arrive, the fee for booth rental will be refunded, or they can leave it to be donated to the Macon County Humane Society. Proceeds from other attractions will benefit the Baptist Youth Group and the Friends of Argenta. Of course, there’s a story behind the somewhat unusual name of the festival. Four years ago, Pastor Kate Pyle, the Presbyterian minister, included a blessing of the animals as part of the church fish fry. Brenda took over planning the next year, and the festival began to expand. Arts and crafts were added first, and then last year, a business expo.

“This year,” said Ron, “we’re also adding a car show and hopefully a BBQ cook-off.” The animals remain the highlight of the festival, though. Joining Pastor Kate in blessing the animals are Pastor Will Ferguson of the Baptist Church and Pastor Bob Baker of the Methodist Church. Although most of the pets brought by their owners to be blessed in the past were dogs, from Pekingese to golden retrievers, and a few cats, one person brought a snake. “It’s kind of neat watching the ministers bless the animals,” said Brenda. “Pastor Kate does hands-on.” The snake, however, was blessed from a good distance. The pet costume competition will be repeated this year with the ministers helping judge the costumes, and the three will also team up for a song as part of the entertainment. And who knows, maybe Mayor Luedke will have second thoughts about that dunk tank.

THRIVE Q&A

KAYTLYND SPANGLER

WHY TAKE OVER BORG-WARNER? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Having our own home field location is huge for Decatur Family YMCA Sports and the families whom we serve. Having our own sports complex allows for endless opportunities! Not only are there six baseball diamonds and our current five soccer fields, but there are 10 acres of undeveloped land that we plan to utilize to grow YMCA programming. Our day camp has the opportunity to move out there as well! Taking over Borg-Warner gives us the ability to help local leagues find the field space they need. We are striving to serve the needs of other organizations that may need to rent diamonds and field space throughout the year. Photo: Sarah Jane

Like us, you may have heard that the Y is taking over the Borg-Warner sports complex—and like us, you may have wondered what that meant. So we went straight to the source, Sports Director Kaytlynd Spangler, to find out what’s on tap with Y sports these days and why they’re so excited about the big BW move.

FAVORITE SPORTS ACTIVITY IN THE DECATUR AREA

Playing basketball at the Y is of course my go-to activity. Some people unwind by reading a book, but shooting threes for an hour or so does it for me! I also play in a volleyball league and on a softball team here in town, which I really enjoy, too.

WHY Y SPORTS ARE A GREAT THING FOR MACON COUNTY

Something Y sports has always done well is reaching beyond our Decatur borders with our activities. Our leagues have players representing every school. We have players from Decatur Public Schools down the street clear out to even Tuscola and Sullivan! Families are driving from up to an hour away to play in Y sports. Our staff personally drive to each school prior to every season to make sure they have everything they need to get their students registered and financially assisted if needed. YMCA Sports Programs have been bringing all of Macon County together for a long time now!

WHAT’S NEW FOR Y SPORTS

MOST UNEXPECTED SPORTS OPPORTUNITY IN THE AREA

We have such a wonderful pickleball community here at the Decatur Family YMCA. They get together 6 days a week! If you have not played pickleball yet, you must check it out. Pickleball has similarities to tennis but is played on a smaller court with paddles and whiffle balls. There are players of all skill types, so everyone is welcome. The Decatur Pickleball Club has been growing, and the YMCA is incredibly happy to be a supportive partner!

Our leagues now include fun family nights! During winter basketball the past two seasons we have taken families to an Illinois State University game where our own players get to play the halftime game in the Redbird Arena. It was such a fun experience for them! This fall soccer season, we are heading to a soccer game, Chicago Fire v. New York FC, on Saturday, September 30. Chicago Fire FC has given the YMCA discounted ticket rates for the event. Be on the lookout for new updates coming from the Decatur Family YMCA!
