THRIVE
There's no denying it's summer now! We have just seen the longest day in the year, kicked off the 12th year of Blues in Central Park and we have about one Bazillion Running events in our calendar. That's right, it's summertime. In this issue of Thrive, we do a lot of talking about places we like to gather with friends or things we collect. Our calendar is packed with places to go and things to do or see. Plus, many of the events are held to support organizations or individuals that need a little help. There is one event in particular I'd like to draw special attention to, though, and that is the Family Fun Day & Phoenix Run on Saturday, July 14th. All of the benefits will go towards rebuilding the Mt. Zion Fire Districts' firehouse and will help replace items not covered by insurance. The Family Fun Day will start off at 8am with the 5k and 1 mile fun run/ walk. A course is set for the country roads just south of Mt. Zion. The kids area, car show and firefigher challenge competitions will begin at 9am. The event will run until 2pm. Firefighters work very hard to protect us our families and all that we cherish. If you're looking for a way to say thank you, check out their website for more information. www.phoenixrun.weebly.com

A look back at last month’s happenings
It's Fresh
Farmers' Markets are popping up all over town! We visited Central Park Saturday morning for veggies, bread, plants and Arthur originals—then headed to Richland Community College for grass-fed meat, fresh fruits and veggies and a montage of Polish sausages. Visit either of these locations Saturday mornings through October.

Great Food Gathers Here
The Gathering Place at Haines & Essick Entertaining season is upon us! Or for you, maybe it’s grillin’ season, kick-back season, pool party season or my personal favorite, umbrella drink season. However you party, there’s inspiration for you at The Gathering Place at Haines & Essick. A mouthful in more ways than one, this clever corner (once its own biz, now a niche in one of Decatur’s favorite retailers) yields a bonanza of big ideas and beautiful presentation. “The best thing is, between all of us, [the staff ] has tried it all, so we’ve always got lots of great ideas for you,” says Store Manager Sue Miller. From hard-to-find food items (Tahitian lime olive oil, anyone?) to wayback machine classics (pure cane sugar sodas!), The Gathering Place delivers, deliciously. But there’s far more to the recipe than tastebud teasers. In the commercialquality in-store kitchen, Donna Dunnick, the in-house culinary guru and cook, whips up on-the-spot samples, leads regular cooking classes (look for a schedule online), and generally shows everyone how it’s done. They pride themselves on adding something unexpected, whether we’re talking rooms or recipes. “Mix grape tomatoes with olive oil and Sarah’s Mediterranean Sea Salt—it’s a very light summer idea,” says Sue. Indeed, part of the appeal lies in their ability to cook up ideas and inspiration. Along with fabulous fare for foodies, the shelves are stocked with a range of entertainment must-haves guaranteed to make even Martha Stewart swoon. Culinary gadgets vie for space with chic napkins, linens and
serving dishes. The current staff favorite: iced serving dishes that make cold storage safe and easy. With margarita rimmers, tea and coffee beverages, dip mixes, oils, pastas, gourmet spices, sauces and more, The Gathering Place gets your gatherings going, from summer parties to fall tailgating. The Gathering Place Staff Pick! Winning Key Lime Bars 2 sticks (8 oz.) butter 2 cups flour 1/2 cup confectioner’s sugar 4 beaten eggs 2 cups granulated sugar 4 tablespoons flour 1/4 cup Floribean’s Key Lime Juice Sift confectioner's sugar. Heat oven to 325 degrees. For crust: Blend stick of butter, 2 cups flour and 1/2 cup confectioner's sugar. Pat into ungreased 13×9” pan. Bake for 18-20 minutes. For filling: Blend together eggs, 2 cups granulated sugar, 4 tablespoons flour and key lime juice. Pour over crust. Bake 20 minutes until lightly brown around the edge. Sprinkle confectioner’s sugar on top while warm. Let cool; then loosen around the edges, and cut into bars.

Pick of the Month Just a little something we ran across and wanted to share.
URBAN FARM Magazine
$5.99 from the Newsstand 801 North Water Street, Decatur
I tend to stop by the Newsstand any time I'm looking for inspiration. Typically, I come away with one or two architecture or interior design magazines, but this time Urban Farm, a bimonthly magazine about sustainable city living, jumped right out at me. I'm a sucker for blackberries, so I didn't have a chance with the oversized berries flaunted on the front cover. The feature article shares a number of unexpected recipes for the fruit and proves "Blackberries Are Not Just for Texting." I also perked up at the articles on harvesting honphotos: Kat Smalley ey, midsummer plantings, and composting in trenches.

THE FOOD DUDE
by T. F. DUDE
Looking for (the) Lincoln
New look, new & fave food, same great vibe Upon entering, the Lincoln Square Lounge in downtown Decatur looks as it has for decades: über-dim lighting and dark wood wall paneling, the bar along one side wall and a row of lowback booths along the other. In recent months, however, the Chiligiris family, who have owned the Lincoln Lounge since it opened in 1933, have been renovating. Once the eyes adjust to the characteristic darkness of the place, the updates come into better view: new hardwood floors have replaced the old, beat-up linoleum, and a beautiful new bar—complete with a footrest, shiny new fixtures and strategic lighting—is complemented by two large flat-screen TVs now inset between the liquor-cabinet shelves. The bathrooms are nicely updated as well, now looking more like what you would find at a mid-scale restaurant and less like those of a college dive bar. The renovations are far from complete, however. A peek behind a thick curtain into the “other side” makes it evident there is still work to be done, as a leaky roof in need of costly repairs has stalled progress on this portion of the restaurant. I visited the Lincoln Lounge on a Friday evening. At one end of the bar sat a group of what appeared to be regulars, a group of young men sharing a cold one, watching golf and chatting like old friends with bartender and co-owner Kostaki Chiligiris.
While I had had my choice of booths when I entered, by the time I left an hour later, each of the tables was occupied by a couple or foursome who seemed to have been there before as well. For a moment I felt like an extra on the set of Cheers. But the moment of feeling like an outsider passed quickly when I realized that it wouldn’t take much effort to become a regular myself. Although the Lounge’s menu is anything but extensive, you can’t go wrong with any of the available options. They offer the classic Midwestern bar fare of hamburgers and potato chips, and they recently added Butch’s pizza and gourmet sandwiches from Ralph’s West End Market. But perhaps what the Lounge is best known for is their classic Greek gyros. The meat was tender and perfectly sliced; the veggies were fresh and plentiful; the pita bread was warm and sturdy; the cucumber sauce was chilled and flavorful. With food like that, it’s no wonder the Lincoln Lounge has stayed a Decatur mainstay for so many years.

What do you COLLECT? In the book Observatory Mansion by Edward Carrey, the main character curates his own little museum of objects he has stolen or found. None of the objects are valuable, only that they were important to the original owner. Â Not all of our collections can be that creepy, but we certainly try.
Here are what some local folks confessed to collecting: Dust Coach purses Cars Teapots Recipes Antique chairs Junk Shot glasses Lost souls Java Jackets Books Nothing Boyd's Bears Pitchers Gadgets Beanie Babies Coca cola memorabilia Memorable quotes: "My sister bought me my first Coach purse with her first two paychecks." ART SPEAK
ART CONNECTS YOU TO PEOPLE As someone who has been involved in the arts all my life, my arts interests have evolved over time. Most of my early years were focused on two-dimensional art. As a kid, I was always drawing—creating my own comic books, illustrating my favorite books or scribbling something from my imagination. As I grew, my artistic interests grew. I explored painting and printmaking and eventually a bit of pottery and sculpture. Lately, I’ve even dabbled in writing. But for me, and maybe for you, working by myself and pouring my heart onto a canvas or into a poem never felt satisfying. I am a social animal and prefer interacting and collaborating with people—fun, creative people. I’ve found that sharing an arts experience with others offers benefits you wouldn’t get from working on your own.
by Jerry Johnson
You get to make new, interesting friends of all ages and backgrounds. If you’re a painter, you can share and express your passion for painting with a group of equally passionate painters. Members of the group might enhance your knowledge or painting skills. Your involvement with yet another group could allow you to learn about theatre or gardening or writing. As a collaborator in a local arts group, you might even help create or perform something that can be shared with the community. All of this, and more, allows you to have fun, learn and grow not just artistically but personally. Fortunately, Decatur’s arts scene offers many opportunities to share your ideas and talents with other people so that you can discuss or create art that is interesting and special. You could attend a weekly Barn Colony Artists meeting, sing in your church choir or the Greater Decatur Chorale, act in a Theatre 7 play, join a library reading or writing club, play in the Decatur Municipal Band or attend an art gallery opening at the Madden Arts Center. Whatever you do, find someone to talk to about your arts experiences, a painting or sculpture you saw, a movie or play you attended, or a song you heard. Art is ultimately about expressing yourself and sharing your impressions and views about the world around you with others. Why not connect with people in your community who have similar creative curiosity and desire and make new friends while you’re at it? After all, as Will Rogers said, “A stranger is just a friend I haven't met yet.”
Art helps you connect with all people. Jerry Johnson is the Executive Director of the Decatur Area Arts Council and may be spotted pretty much anywhere art is happening. 12 | july 2012

Dear Miss Manners,
L
Dear Miss Manners – I am in desperate need of advice! My mother and I have been pouring over the seating chart for my wedding. Can you help me make the process easier? - Laura
Laura – The seating chart is often the most
frustrating part of any wedding! The following are some tips to make the task easier on both yourself and your guests: Begin with an organized floor plan and a solid guest list. Keep in mind the relationship, age and any special needs of your guests and attempt to be sensitive to their individual personalities. However it is YOUR big day and pleasing everyone is not always possible. Your best attempt at making all of your guests happy requires the following steps:
4335 W. Main Decatur,Illinois
Every Friday: Catfish,Cod and Walleye
July Bands The Leslie Starky Band Saturday July 7th
Dave Hardy (Bike Night) Thursday, July 19th: 7-10p
Sams (Blues Band) Wednesday, July 25th: 8p-12a
Be sure to assign a perfect hostess. A smiling face and sense of humor will definitely make the task successful and help ensure that even your crankiest uncle will have little to complain about. Be organized. Provide your guests an alphabetical diagram as well as easy to read table numbers incorporated into your décor. Individual place cards make no question as to where your guests belong. When in doubt…. consult a professional. Your special day should be a celebration of your union. A wedding planner can help ease frustrating burdens. Remember, manners matter! Making the process as easy as possible for your guests ensures that they are all able to enjoy the evening and be at ease.

Local Goes Wild at Wildflour Artisan Bakery & Cafe Thinking Wildflour means croissants and cupcakes? You’d be right, but you’d also be missing the main morsel because European charm, café coziness and music house mood effortlessly combine at Wildflour Artisan Bakery & Cafe. As Owner Kelly Wingard’s alwaysdynamic vision rises, Wildflour takes shape as a gathering place for young and old, elegant and eclectic, movers and muses.
Cocktails (cocktails with no regrets!), and of course a full docket of the local music they’re becoming known for. “We want to stay as local as possible,” says Kelly, noting that’s true of the music they showcase as well as the foods they stock, which are as fresh and preservative free as possible.
Wildflour regular Mary Jo Comerford couldn’t agree more. “The atmosphere is comfortable, making it perfect for lunch with friends or just a quick “It’s become a good place to gather, snack. words by Joli Hohenstein | images by Sarah Jane becoming known as a hot spot for undiscovered talent, Wildflour’s roster includes new groups, up-and-coming Millikin professors, local favorites and even a house band, Rebel Yell (a duo featuring one of their own servers). Between the music and the mood, friends gather and business transpires at Wildflour. “It’s good coffee, good food, good ambiance and a great location,” says Rick Ackerly, a local writer and educational consultant who makes Wildflour his base for both business and pleasure about five days a week. “They have the best bakery foods; it’s a nice place to sit and talk to people, and they have the best music selection.” Rick isn’t alone. Red Hat Society ladies, book clubs, writers' groups and the Decatur Gamers have made their homes here. The local ministry Sow Good Sow Sweet holds its 2nd Saturday Sow here, often bursting into spontaneous song to the delight of diners.
“I appreciate the music, poetry readings, and the opportunity for bridge players, gamers, etc. to gather,” says Mary Jo. Wildflour is a fan favorite for wedding showers and private tea parties as well. Expect regular Afternoon Teas this fall, as Kelly just became an Apprentice Tea Sommelier and will be hosting traditional English teas with a side of tea tasting and teaching. In fact, once the air cools and autumn brings its special ambiance, things will really heat up (and we’re not just talking coffee) with weekly craft nights, game nights and more. Special occasions like Valentine’s Day bring a recurring favorite, Dancing & Desserts. “We have a band playing standards from the 30s, 40s, 50s; it’s BYOB, and we push tables back for a dance floor,” says Kelly. Continued on Page 16

As the eclectic events and entertainment unfold, the food line is coming up. “We started with just an indoor farmer’s market, then added coffee,” says Kelly. Soon a full slate of European-style baked goods; daily quiche, soup and sandwich specials; and gourmet drinks joined the fray.
“It’s kind of cool because we’re for people from 18 to 80,” says Kelly. “There aren’t many places you can take your kids, grandparents and everyone to the same place for live music and food.”
Next up: a new frappe line, new signature drinks like the Main Street Mocha (a step up from your average mocha) and new syrups that offer an endless array of possibilities. Also on the slate: drip coffees, the hottest thing going with a filter directly in the glass and set on your cup. We’re told it enhances the taste of coffee and you have to see it to truly experience it— and perhaps that’s the bottom line on Wildflour as a whole.

NOT-SO-UNCOMMON COMIC CROSSOVERS! WRITTEN BY KAT SMALLEY WITH HELP FROM CAPITAL COMICS OWNER AND ARTIST, JERRY HINKLE
HERE'S A LOOK AT SOME STORIES THAT CROSS THE BOUNDARIES OF TELEVISION, BOOKS, COMIC BOOKS, AND GRAPHIC NOVELS!
WE'VE SEEN IT HAPPEN A HUNDRED TIMES BEFORE. A POPULAR TV SHOW BECOMES A MOVIE, OR VICE VERSA. IT HAPPENS JUST AS OFTEN WITH COMIC BOOKS . . . PERHAPS, EVEN MORE OFTEN. HERE ARE SOME OF THE COMMON PATHS A STORY TAKES AS IT RELATES TO THE COMIC BOOK WORLD.
#1. COMIC-TO-TV
#2. COMIC-TO-MOVIE Migrating a story from comic book to movie is a little more commonplace. You can probably think of dozens of examples off the top of your head. Remember Superman? Here's one that threw me for a loop: 300. Frank Miller's fictionalized retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae had me fooled, and I would have never guessed it was a comic book first!
The Walking Dead comic book series by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard first went to print way back in 2003. It wasn't until 2010 that it premiered as an AMC television series. What happened in between? The comic became extremely popular! Once the comic had amassed an army of followers, it was time to launch the T.V. series. Translating comic book to television isn't so far-fetched and fans of this comic are cashing in. The comic was quite rare and now that it's a popular T.V. series, collectors are offering high dollar for some issues.

COMIC-TO-MOVIE PART 2
COMIC-TO-MOVIE PART 3
Comic-to-movie. I think you've got the idea, but let's give a little extra thought to those stories (Batman) that get retold over and over and over again. Diehard fans of The Bat-Man from Detective Comics originating way back in 1939 would like to pretend most of the movies never happened.
But, wait! There's more! What about those stories that originated in the world of comic books a little too complicated for just one movie? If you know anything about comic book fans and creators, it's that they have miles and miles of back-story. In the Marvel Comics Universe, the Avengers have been a rotating team many superheroes deep, so how could you sum it all up in one movie? Comic-to-movie, part 3 is a shout-out to movies like Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America and Thor that laid the groundwork for an awesome movie like The Avengers. Should I bother to mention that it made $628.9 million at the box office in 19 days?

TV-TO-COMIC
BOOK-TO-TV-TOCOMIC
Comic-to-T.V. is a no-brainer these days, too. If you have an audience, why not give them something more? And, if you have a good story built, why not see if you have another audience. Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the spin-off show Angel have each become a popular comic book series. In fact, about 6 months after the Buffy season finale, the first comics were published as "Series 8," a direct continuation.
Believe it or not, it happens! A Game of Thrones is a great example with HBO emblazoned on the front.

Collections for Life Manning’s memory montages put moments on display

If you don’t know where to put your collection of memories, you might try asking Diana Manning to put it on your shoes. When the popularity of Diana Manning’s Shelf Sitter people allowed her to take four years off work, she realized she wasn’t ready to retire. So she started creating montages. “I like montages because you can keep looking and keep looking and see something new each time. There’s lots of information in there.” One of her montages, featuring a night out at a nice restaurant, hangs on the wall at Paco’s Sol Bistro. But she doesn’t do them just to hang on the wall—she does montages to sit on, store other memories in, or carry. And they’re all works of art. Some of her favorite montages are those that commemorate the lives of her clients—and she’ll do montages about anything you want on anything you want. Except shoes. On shoes she draws. “I’ve done montages on purses, and I do memory boxes. I made a chair for Ray Batman when he retired from Dove. I’ve done a memory box for a wedding gift with lists of music and places and pictures of the couple. It was a surprise, so it was kind of cool. One man had a canvas montaged for his father and stepmother—things the kids remembered from growing up.” Diana has only one requirement when it comes to crafting montages. “I don’t like to make ugly art—art that makes people feel creepy. I like to make people smile.” But that didn’t keep her from honoring a request for a montage with a Twilight theme. “It was a little out of my realm, so I had to research it before I could make it.” Diana likes to do a variety of types of art and shows not only montaged handbags and memory boxes, canvas, and furniture on her web site but also T-shirts, jewelry, and detailed prints of country scenes. “I have a tendency to work on a montage, then on a person, then on shoes, then on jewelry.” Continued on Page 32
