A look back at last month’s happenings
Despite the cold and rainy temperatures, volunteers and donors came out on October 6th in droves to the 11th annual WSOY Community Food Drive at Kroger on Route 36. Donations collected totaled more than 730,000 lbs of food, exceeding the food drive goal by 80,000 lbs. Food and monetary donations benefit the Catholic Charities and Salvation Army food pantries.

Rise & Shine The Community Leaders Breakfast flooded the Decatur Conference Center & Hotel on October 5th. Chris Phillips of Land of Lincoln Credit Union started with an update on Grow Decatur; United Way Campaign Chairman Brett Swallow followed with a program update and request for continued support. Anne Ryder, television journalist turned inspirational speaker, rounded out the morning by sharing personal stories of her interview with Mother Teresa.

Classic good times were had by all who took to the street to cruise "Eldo" last month. Donnelly Automotive Machine, long time resident of Eldorado Street, hosted a concert and food vendors for cruisers and gawkers alike.
Brew Ha Ha October 6th marked the second annual Brew Ha Ha fundraiser for the Decatur Area Arts Council. Event goers were treated to drinking games including beer pong, a stein hoisting competition, costume contest and the musical stylings of local band Imagine That. Scott Busboom, radio personality from Cromwell Radio, was crowned Mayor of Brew Ha Ha.

Pinewood Derby The local Boy Scouts 2nd annual Corporate Pinewood Derby at Hickory Point Mall created friendly competition on a small scale. Local businesses designed and raced scale cars for bragging rights and a trophy. Congrats to grand prize winner Rutherford Photo & Video. Best design was awarded to Decatur Electronics for their tube design. For fun, an election forecast race was held between Democratic and Republican parties; see the red and blue cars for results.

The Place to Be: Main Place Bar & Grill Mess with an icon, and people around Decatur start to get nervous. Make a new icon, and people start to take notice. It’s all happening right here at Main Place Bar & Grill, formerly the longtime downtown Decatur fixture Jimmy Ryan’s. For all the change, says General Manager Tiffany Jess, the core has stayed the same. “Same employees, same chef, same hours, but the restaurant has been remodeled, and we have a completely new menu with a more casual, laid back, affordable selection,” she says. “With all the changes to downtown, if we were going to do something, this was the time to do it.” Gone are the white tablecloths and dim lighting of yore. The redux sports bright lighting, big picture windows and a totally new layout and flow. The restrooms have been relocated from the front foyer; the bar moved to the former atrium area. The elevated area regulars called “the lift” is gone, in its place a massive high impact wine rack showcasing new and old selections. “We changed the house wine [adding 7 CK Mondavi options] and kept some old favorites,” says Tiffany. “We did the same thing with the menu, kept some old favorites but added all new burgers, paninis and more.” More goodness includes a revamped BLT with avocado and chipotle mayo, refreshed chicken salad with walnuts and apples, bacon-wrapped shrimp and hand cut French fries made in house. The menu will get a refresh every month with the addition of several seasonal sensations, and Tiffany’s latest favorite is
the new fall fun Late Night Burger, topped with an intriguing combination of cheddar cheese, bacon, jalapeños, chipotle mayo, and, of all things, peanut butter. Of course, diners will have the opportunity to round out every meal with a signature delectable dessert, including crème brûlée, peaches Zinfandel and bananas foster, a fan favorite. Something that hasn’t changed: Their well-known bent for hosting the perfect private party. With a banquet room that holds up to 75 people, they feature services including a full bar, appetizer parties, cocktail parties, sit down dinners and more. Design your own menu or let guests order from the menu, according to your size and style of party. In addition, the outdoor patio still offers a great al fresco option for gatherings large and small. With an upgrade on mood and menu, it’s sure to please all. “It’s a completely different restaurant, and people have been very responsive,” says Tiffany.

Noble Roman’s: Pizza for the Commoners What better party than a party with pizza? What better party than a pizza party? A pizza party with bowling? Yep, two of my favorite things come together at Spare Time Lanes here in Decatur. Little known fact: This bowling wonderland houses a Noble Roman’s Bistro. Available by the slice or fresh baked in full pies, these delicious creations tease taste buds. Sharpeyed tasters will recognize the flavor of this wellloved chain, a favorite and fixture among our Hoosier friends to the east. The crust has a slightly yeasty flavor with a bit of a doughy complement that gives a great bite. (The company bills it as made from “specially milled, high protein flour, flavorful cornmeal and lots of yeast.”) We say it’s good. The tangy sauce (made with the requisite “secret spices”) gives robust flavor, and the unique blend of cheeses (they say not just mozzarella but muenster, too, with a pinch of oregano) adds interest. On the side or as an appetizer, go for the signature Cheesy Sticks, delicious soft bread covered in a blend of cheeses and toasted.
We’re talking burgers, tenderloins, grilled cheese, hot dogs, a full array of sides including regular and waffle fries, a nice assortment of salads, plus a big, hearty breakfast menu served until 11 am every day. Food Dude, doing full due diligence as your head taster, checked out the Frisco melt and was more than a little surprised at the deliciousness. And even more impressed by the curve this one threw. Yes, the traditional elements were there (grilled bread, lettuce, tomato), but it was the sauce that made the difference. Tangy and creamy, the ideal complement for their thick burger. Could be standard, could be their own special recipe. Either way, guud. Of course, for this Dude, the added appeal comes from the chance to bowl a few frames in between snacks. For a kids’ party or an adult outing, bowling always engages, and Spare Time offers a range of party packages. The Dude’s favorite happens to be Moonlight bowling, Saturday nights at 10 pm starting in the fall and through early spring.

Your Food Dude didn’t partake this time, but “meaty buffalo wings”—hot-n-spicy or bar-bque—are also an option that could be in the future.

This month, I found two pre-mixed party-starters in a bag. First, let's talk about the Chocolate Espresso Cream Cheese Chewies in the "Eat Me" package. Well, there's not much to talk about. These probably won't last until my next party. The second find is the Peach Bellini mix which will come in handy next time I need a fun, casual drink to entertain friends with. All you need is a bottle of Champaign (or you can substitute white wine), and about 3.5 hours to let the slushie freeze to perfection. november 2012 | 11

Be Part of the Irresistible Experience Whenever I go see a theatrical performance, I am struck by how different it is from a movie-going experience. Examples abound on the divergent experience for the audience as well as the actors. The most obvious factor is that theater is live. The audience and actors are right there in the same room. The audience can interact with the actors, consciously or unconsciously, and to some degree influence the show. When audience members laugh, gasp or applaud, they inspire the actors. During a live performance, good actors and good audience members can create a positive feedback loop that brings out the best in both. Movies, on the other hand, are locked in time. No matter how much the audience laughs or cheers, the show, good or bad, will never change. For stage actors, performing live is like performing without a net. Regardless of what distractions the actors are experiencing, they must stay focused and try to deliver the same quality show the audience saw the night before. In film, the director can stop the action at any time and have the actors start over. He can have the actors perform a scene 12 different ways and later, during editing process, choose his favorite one to include in the movie. Many technical things that movies can do are difficult, often impossible, for live theatre. Movies can go “on location” and actually place their actors in a desert, on a mountain, or in a speeding car, changing locales in the blink of an eye. Theater, on the other hand, must suggest its locations with lighting, a prop, a gesture or a line of

dialogue. The audience must fill in the rest with their imagination. Films can use special effects, music and sounds to enhance the actor’s final performance, refining each element until it is precisely as desired. Most of this enhancement is done after the actors have done their jobs and gone. Theater creates all of its magic on stage as the show is taking place. Movies can bring the audience up close to the actors, where they can see the smallest tear and hear the softest whisper. Stage actors must learn to project themselves physically and vocally across the theatre. In spite of the distance in theater, the sensation of being in the same room with another human being and sensing the vulnerability of a tender or tragic moment can be inspiring. Movies deliver a highly crafted, often biggerthan-life experience based on a specific series of choices, with no direct interaction with the audience. I certainly enjoy a good blockbuster as much as the next guy. However, theater provides, within its limitations, a performance based upon a well-rehearsed plan that often flexes as the audience and actors live from moment to moment. Unplanned moments, both good and bad, can happen on the theater stage. I personally find, though, that being part of that shared experience, as an audience member or an actor, right here and right now, to be irresistible. The Decatur Area Arts Council offers an ongoing calendar of opportunities for you to be part of that irresistible experience. The latest plans include a series of bus trips to St. Louis’ Fox Theatre, where you can see Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (February 7), The Book of Mormon (March 2 or 3), War Horse (March 21) and Anything Goes (June 6). Tickets are on sale now and include bus ride, lunch at the Fox, premium seating for the show and a snack on the ride back. Call the Arts Council at 423-3189 to make your reservations.

You don’t have to break the bank for ambiance and entertainment. Pulling off the season’s coolest party is more about paying attention to the details than shelling out for the shiny things, say today’s professionals. Of course, there’s something to be said for making it happen without making yourself crazy, so we asked a few pros— those zany people who do this every day—to share their top tips with you.
The Planner
Themes are more prevalent now than ever before, and a theme well done transports guests to another time and place through sight, sound and scent, says Jody Cox of An Affair to Remember. “It’s less about cheesy décor and props than it is about clever use of color, fabrics, textures, lighting and aromas to create an authentic environment,” she says. 14 | november 2012
Think about the vibe of your theme; how do you want your guests to feel? Throwing a Parisian or French themed party? Don’t automatically look to the iconic Eiffel tower centerpiece. Pump French music through your sound system; serve your guests French style cuisine or designate a greeter or emcee/ host who’ll don a passable French accent, she suggests. Focus on the experience—the more interactive the better.
The Decorator
Add a little spice to any party by stepping away from the traditional color palette, says interior decorator Kim Peckert of Floral Designs by Kim. Use your current décor as a starting point; then take it up a notch with key pieces and accents in a mix of finishes and textures. For example, a family room in hues of brown, blue, grey and cream could benefit from adding some silver, crystal, whites and creams with lots of glitter. Include a coordinating centerpiece for the cocktail table and lighted floral pieces for a mantel or staircase. Another quick and easy tip for decorating: add clusters of ornaments to any existing greenery arrangements and consider adding throw
pillows to sofas and chairs with all of the new colors. Small accessory items can be easily changed to match the new decor as well. In the dining room, pull the look together by including coordinating placemats or a runner and accenting with fresh flowers and crystal with glowing candles for a simple but elegant decor. Always feel free to incorporate fresh greens with any artificial products for a more natural look, and the smell of fresh greens is a treat to the senses. “The best advice I can give is to use your imagination, incorporate your own colors and environment into your decor, and most of all have fun!” says Kim.

The most important consideration when planning with food and wine is to have fun, says Stephen Hartman, CCM, general manager/CEO for the Country Club of Decatur. “You’re inviting people into your home to have a good time, first and foremost,” he says. What’s more, contrary to popular belief, don’t try to have something for everyone. “Everybody has a different palate. Wine will play differently for each different person,” says Stephen. “Don’t get wrapped up in the perfect match or the perfect pairing.”
Unless you have a wine of a particular vintage or a special label, the first step should be setting the menu. Then choose wine with nuances that complement the cuisine. That means contrasting specific components of wine and food. For example, if your first course is rich, cheesy and buttery, choose a wine with more acidity to cut the cream. A good example: sauvignon blanc. For a main dish with proteins, such as filet with red wine sauce, integrate the wine you’re serving, such as cabernet sauvignon, into the sauce. “That’s not only going to enhance the flavor profile of the protein but you’ve prearranged that the wine works with the core components on the palate,” he says. For wine with dessert, go the opposite way: Pair sweet with sweet, choosing ports and sherrys. But don’t make the mistake of tasting a dessert wine alone and turning it away for its sticky sweetness. With your sinfully rich chocolate cake on the palate, the two counteract each other and cut the sweetness to tickle the tastebuds.

Some say the food makes the event. It’s all about what “food mood” you want to create, says Secret Recipes’ AnnaMarie Hanes, but it doesn’t take a white hat to make it happen. First, think about the time of day for your event. Earlier entertaining begets lighter fare; evening soirees can carry something heartier. Type of function also moves the menu. Casual get-togethers keep casual fare going, like pork loin or herb roasted chicken. Up the ante for more formal affairs with the sure fire prime rib, or Cajun salmon with risotto, the hot side of the moment. Worried about how much to have, but don’t want to mess with RSVPs? A good rule of thumb: Count on two-thirds of the people you invite attending, and then plan accordingly. “Whatever the occasion, there’s always a menu that fits,” says AnnaMarie. “If you’re not really sure what type of ‘food mood’ you want to set, ask for suggestions. Caterers love to get creative with you.”

Stumped on which wines to serve? Here’s how Country Club of Decatur’s Stephen Hartman pleases a crowd. Look to whites, fruitful in style. Top picks: Australian chardonnay, California sauvignon blanc, French Vouvray. Built a little more for mass appeal, all are easy drinking wines. Remember reds. Top picks: California zinfandel, California pinot noir. Typically not as robust as the burgundys from France or the California cabernets, they appeal to many palates. What to serve on Turkey Day? To draw out your bird, Stephen suggests pinot noir, especially from California; French Beaujolais; and California zinfandels. If you have white wine drinkers in the house, consider California sauvignon blancs and Rieslings.

Four Ideas for Fun Favors at Your Wine Party

1. Bottle Card Holder
Place cork in clean, rinsed out dark glass wine bottle. (Feeling creative? Fill a clear bottle with something fun like beads or tulle.) Using a Stanley knife, cut a small channel in the top of the wine cork. Scrape out excess cork. Insert place card or wine label in channel.
2. Cork Card Holder
Make place cards with guest names or cards with wine names. Size approximately 4”x3”.
Choose six corks of similar size (length and width). Place in two rows of 3 side by side. Wrap with brown twine or thin rope until stable and corks do not move. Insert place card or wine label in space between two rows of corks.

Fill a square, clear glass container half full with wine corks. Nestle a small, clear glass votive candle holder in the center of the container. Surround the votive holder with more corks, to the top of the square container. Place votive candle in holder; light and enjoy your ambiance!

A striking centerpiece is as easy as a large piece of shimmery tulle artfully arranged underneath clear glasses and containers of varying sizes (filled with corks, of course). Or get in the spirit with a beaded square placemat topped with accessories in metallic tones, our cork candle holder and beautiful etched glasses filled with more corks. Keep the feel elegant by staying largely monochromatic (here we went with champagne/ gold with a pop of silver and red for interest).

Home wine tasting parties bring the entertainment to you by Rachel Stuart Whether you’re a seasoned wine connoisseur or more of a vino novice, hosting a home wine tasting party is the perfect way to warm up this fall. Not sure where to begin? Take a trip downtown to visit the guys at The Decanter Fine Wine & Spirits, 215 North Main Street, whose wine expertise and expansive fine wine collection will provide you with just the right ingredients to make your home tasting a night to remember. First and foremost, wine tasting should be a fun and enjoyable experience, so make the party your own. The three minds behind Decatur’s fine wine shop, Kevin Graham, Jay Emrich and Mike Delaney, have the art of home tasting down to a science, and with their tips, you and your guests will be sipping away in no time.
Set the tone
Start your evening by establishing your approach. Are you looking for an educational affair that’s anything but stuffy? Then maybe a formal yet fun approach is what you need. Do homework on your wine selections beforehand, provide pad and pencils for your guests to take notes and open the floor for lively discussion. Maybe you’re leaning more on the casual side? Kick your shoes off, have guests bring complimentary appetizers and just enjoy trying new wines together. Choosing a theme is another great way to let your personality shine through and to customize a home wine tasting that’s distinctively yours. Old World wines, South American wines, all cabernets – the choices are as endless as your creativity.
Pick your price point
“Typically our wines start around $10 a bottle, with the bulk of our selection being in the $10-$30 range,” says Jay. For those keeping their party on a budget, the guys suggest having guests bring a bottle of their favorite wine to share, keeping costs minimal and options plentiful. A typical home tasting consists of approximately six bottles of wine, so keep that in mind when establishing a price point.

Craft your menu
“The tasting experience is best when wines are paired with complimentary food options,” says Kevin. The experts at The Decanter can guide you toward your best wine options when you have a good idea of what you’re planning to serve your guests. For any Italian dishes, steak or foods with BBQ sauce, Kevin suggests a red Zinfandel. For a meaty menu, a bold Shiraz would be a good choice. Thinking of a lighter, salad menu or a chicken dish? Grab some Pinot Grigio or a sparkling wine, which also goes great with seafood and desserts. Another crowd favorite is the chardonnay, which pairs well with a broad range of dishes with pork, chicken or seafood. For added seasonal appeal, ask for a popular spiced pumpkin apple variety that when served warm would deliciously complement any of your favorite fall foods.
Toast to the good times
When serving your wines, prepare 1-2 ounce pours for your guests to sample. “Start the evening off with your lightest wines, like any sparkling or white varieties, then move in to your heavier, drier reds and round out the evening with your sweetest variety,” says Kevin. Take at least 5 minutes between tastings. Between samples, it’s important to cleanse the palate with water, bread or unsalted crackers to experience fully the flavor of each of your options. “Hosting your own home wine party is more intimate than a night out on the town, and it allows you to really focus on something together while learning something new and having fun,” says Jay. “A home tasting brings people together and is great for so many groups of people – singles, couples, families with small children – and it can all be done in the comfort of one’s home.” Uncork a bottle and get to sharing with a little help from the guys at The Decanter.
