Kids Rock!
at Macon Resources Talk about your easy-to-write headlines. Macon Resources’ fourth annual Kids Rock! event promises families the organization’s signature opportunity to explore, create and play together—while rocking the house in a whole new way. The event, set for Saturday, March 9, from 9:30 am to noon, features a family concert headlined by members of the award winning children’s band ScribbleMonster. Described as “Sesame Street on steroids,” the group cleverly blends traditional children’s music, improv comedy and pop rock. They’re regular guest hosts on Sirius/ XM Radio, were chosen as a Parenting Magazine “Parenting Pick” and were named a Top 10 Kids and Family Album of the Year by NPR (National Public Radio). Good enough for Lollapalooza (they really did perform there); good enough for Decatur. Called “a celebration of rock music done family style,” ScribbleMonster promises high-energy, play-along fun. “It’s very interactive, with kids encouraged to get up and move around and lots of audience participation,” says Amy Malachowski-Taute, Macon Resources Director of Public Relations. When the house isn’t rockin’, kids 12 and under can shake things up with a full slate of creative potential, including face painting by The Zoo Lady, a fun art project, Funky Hairdooz, make your own Papa Murphy’s Mini Murph pizzas and decorate your own cupcakes with Babycakes by Brandi.
To top it off, the Children’s Museum of Illinois and the Scovill Mobile Zoo will put two of Decatur’s favorite attractions on wheels to bring educational fun to Kids Rock! There’ll be vendors and door prizes and music to spare. Perhaps the best part is that all proceeds go to Bright Start, the local at-home visiting program that provides families support for active involvement in their children’s development. “Families will explore, create and play together—we started from there and set out to create a memorable day for kids,” says Amy. Advance tickets are $5 or $20 for 5. Tickets are $6 per person at the door. Admission is free for kids 3 and under. All activities are included in the ticket price, too! To purchase advance tickets, call or visit Macon Resources.
Get There: Kids Rock! Saturday, March 9 9:30 am to 12 pm (family concert at 10:30 am) Macon Resources 2121 Hubbard Ave., Decatur 875-1910 ext. 880 www.maconresources.org

MUSIC: are we doing it right?
Since we’re all rockin’ and rollin’, maybe we should consider whether we’re doing it right. But who knows enough about music to tell us what we should be listening to? Oh, right, everyone has an opinion on what music we should be listening to. So instead of guessing at the taste of the people you can eavesdrop on while checking out at Dollar General, let’s ask a couple of trusted sources what music everyone should have on hand. Gary Laskowski of GB’s CDs & DVDs • Mumford & Sons • The Black Keys • Jack White “He’s the best thing to happen to rock music for the last 15 years.”
Matt Daugherty of the band Cadet • Failure: Fantastic Planet • Queens of the Stone Age: Songs for the Deaf • Torche: Meanderthal • Local H: Pack Up the Cats • Open Hand: You and Me
John Grubb of Rock of Ages Anything that has to do with 70s rock, but you should especially be listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bob Seger.

THE FOOD DUDE
Café Brio One of my favorite things to do when I cook is come up with exciting, new combinations of food. Some are a lot more successful than others. While my experiments may be hit or miss, there’s one place you can go that’s got it right, and that’s Café Brio. I’ve had the pleasure of going to their first location in Springfield a couple of times, so I was really excited to see them open a second location here in good old Decatur. I was ecstatic to see (and taste) that all of the things that make the original location great survived the drive east. Café Brio is one of the best examples of a fusion restaurant. What’s a fusion restaurant, you may ask? It’s what happens when a great chef takes little bits of the food that excites him and finds amazing and tasty ways of combining them together. Café Brio’s style is a mixture of Latin, Caribbean, Mediterranean and even some Italian and Asian thrown in. It’s basically the greatest hits of the world’s cuisine! Sometimes the combinations will make you think, “Why didn’t I think of that?" Others may seem strange at first, but trust me, give the combinations a chance and you’ll discover a whole new world of flavors to explore. We started our meal with the delicious (and complementary) tri-colored tortilla chips and salsa and a selection from the tapas (appetizer) menu. We went with the tamale cakes, and they were awesome. They were just crisp on the

outside and soft and sweet on the inside. They’re delicious on their own, but the toppings that come with them are too good to ignore. You get a salsa fresca, a chipotle cheese sauce, and a southwest sour cream, and they’re all killer. Our dinners were nothing short of amazing. Mrs. Food Dude went with the pesto chicken sandwich. It’s pan-seared to perfection and topped with sun-dried tomato mayo, basil pesto and spring greens. All that, and it’s served on a homemade bun with fresh-cut fries. Delicious! One of our foodie friends accompanied us on our adventure, and she chose the shrimp BLT. It has everything you’d expect on a great BLT: thick, crisp bacon, juicy tomatoes, and tangy lettuce. But the thing that sets this apart is obviously the shrimp! It’s seared in a chipotle glaze that our friend described as awesome! I went with the habanero chicken, and I wasn’t disappointed! It’s seared in a habanero crust that was just spicy enough to taste good and not be overpowering. It was topped with a raisin-andpeanut sauce and cilantro. That may seem strange to some of you, but trust me, the combination of heat, sweet and savory just makes it outstanding! It came with generous portions of black beans and rice that rounded out an amazing entrée. In addition to what we sampled, they have soups, salads, a vegetarian menu and dessert to top it all off! Give your taste buds a thrill at Café Brio!
Get There: Café Brio 2880 North Oakland Avenue Monday to Thursday 11 am–2 pm, 5:00 pm–9:00 pm Friday to Saturday 11 am–2 pm, 5pm - 10pm Sunday 11 am - 2 pm 875.2746 The Food Dude is not a professional critic. He just really, really likes food.

I guess I still have cake on my mind from last month! I decided to take a walk down memory lane and grab a couple of CDs that I used to love back in the day. Both Cake: Fashion Nugget and The Cure: Mixed Up jumped out at me right away. It's easy to get caught up listening to music online these days, but there's still something to be said for having a physical disc covered with artwork complete with the liner notes, and if you're lucky, lyrics! Believe me when I say I'm hooked all over again. The only part I haven't missed is trying to get the disc out of the stupid plastic wrapper. Oh, and the impenetrable plastic sticker that goes along the top. What I didn't know about GB's until this most recent visit is that they can order just about anything you're looking for. It's a great place to check out when you're working on your music collection or just looking for great conversation. march 2013 | 11

ART SPEAK
by Jerry Johnson
I love rock 'n' roll I love music, and rock ‘n’ roll has always been my favorite music. During the four years I attended college, I worked at Musicland record store. I deejayed at Millikin’s WJMU radio station during my senior year. I have even been lucky enough to be a part of several bands over the past 30 years. Whether you’re a singer, musician or music lover, you can find virtually every type of music in Decatur to enjoy--from blues to jazz or bluegrass to opera. Plenty of Decatur residents, with or without a great deal of formal training, have an unquenchable passion for music. But what does a musician in Decatur do when he loves to play music? He could set up his drum kit, get a few friends and start a band. Decatur continues to turn out lots of great bands, banging out pop, rock and country songs from the past six decades. He could grab a horn and join the Decatur Municipal Band, one the oldest bands in continuous service in the United States. These are just a couple of opportunities found locally that my friend Steve Schepper, for example, has taken advantage of during his musical career. Having studied music at Millikin University, Steve taught music in the Decatur School District for many years. He has played in a couple of rock bands and a jazz combo. He also performs with the Decatur Big Band and the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra. You may even have seen him in the pit orchestra for a local musical theatre production. We probably all know people whose day jobs find them in an office cubicle or behind a retail counter but who have also managed to find an outlet for the music in their hearts. Music, like any form of art, is one of the ways we make sense

of our lives, express feelings when we have no words or understand things with our hearts when we can't with our minds. In addition to bringing joy into our lives, the act of playing music gives us so much more. It improves our memory and cognitive ability. It enhances our coordination, boosts our immune system and relieves stress. It also teaches us about teamwork, perseverance and self-discipline. So why not take steps to express and improve yourself at the same time? You could take piano lessons at Sound Check Music Center or learn how to play the guitar at Linda’s Music Center, play in the First Christian Church praise band or sing in the Greater Decatur Chorale, or show up at an open mic night at Donnie's Homespun Pizza or karaoke night at Jabroni’s Bar. Though you may not be good enough to quit your day job, just think of everything you’ll gain.
Jerry Johnson is the Executive Director of the Decatur Area Arts Council and may be spotted pretty much anywhere art is happening. 12 | march 2013

Perfect Pair Want a little music with your food? Written by Rachel Stuart | Photos by Sarah Jane
Some days you’re a little bit country, others a little bit rock n’ roll, but regardless of what kind of musical mood you’re in, what is the one thing that will always satisfy? Dinner and live music—the dynamic duo of Decatur nighttime entertainment. Few things pair as well as live music and a great sit-down meal. Add in a little ambiance, a handful of friends, a few generous shakes of the good times and your favorite beverage of choice – and congratulations, my friends. You’ve found the perfect pairing for a night of soul- and stomach-satisfying entertainment. Have your cake and eat it, too! Figuratively speaking, of course, but luckily Decatur residents have this perfect combination right here at home. Next time you and your crew are in need of a meal and some music, check out some of our local establishments that are serving up some hearty entertainment.
Donnie’s Homespun Owner Neill Dresen is both a musician and a food entrepreneur. “I’ve always wanted to pair music with food,” he says. In 2010, Donnie’s Homespun grew out of a small takeout pizza and sandwich shop and moved to the building next door, allowing for more dining area, a bar and a stage. “We offer live music two or three nights a week,” says Neill. “Wednesday night is open mic night, and Fridays and Saturdays, we almost always have a band.” Donnie’s has brought a diverse lineup to the stage with local musicians, Millikin students, people Neill has 14 | march 2013
played with, and the random passerby acts traveling through the area. “We host all genres of music, and we get a pretty alternative mix,” he says. At Donnie’s Homespun, customers can enjoy not only a diverse music line-up but a diverse, one-of-a-kind menu. Specialty pizzas, brick oven sandwiches, pita wraps, salads, smoothies and multiple vegan and vegetarian options are sure to satisfy an array of appetites. Neill’s idea of the perfect night out at Donnie’s Homespun? “I would order the Dank Veggie pizza and listen to some of the great local talent that we host here in Decatur,” he says.

Paco’s Sol Bistro
Spend 10 minutes talking to the man himself, owner Paco Greenwell, and you’ll find a man passionate about pairing music and food to create an unique ambiance of “casually sophisticated” dining right in the “We have bands usually every weekend, along with the heart of Decatur. occasional Monday night and Saturday afternoon jazz,” From the food to the live music offering, Paco’s Sol says Gregg Meisenhelter, owner of LSB. Live music and great food have been synonymous with Lock Stock & Barrel (LSB) since the day it opened in 1978.

Continued from page 15 “LHP, a classic rock band with the occasional saxophone; the Matt Carter Band with its roots in rock, Tom Petty and Train favorites; and Escaping Neverland, a band covering music from the ’70s to today, are crowd favorites,” he says. “If you’re coming to Paco’s for the first time, I would suggest a Friday evening LHP show paired with our Bacon BBQ Stuffed Pork Chop and your favorite beer or wine,” he says.
At Doherty’s, it’s all about being part of the family, and John has created an atmosphere made just for that. “If it’s your first time in Doherty’s, we will greet you at the door and thank you when you leave. If it’s your second time at Doherty’s, we will greet you at the door and already know what you want to drink,” he says. John encourages you to remember Doherty’s as the spot for a Thursday night meal and music cravings. A perfect night at Doherty’s, according to John?
Doherty’s Pub and Pins For a laid-back evening with good food and good times, try on downtown Decatur’s Irish pub and restaurant for size.
“A perfect Doherty’s evening would be a filet mignon with asparagus and a potato,” he says. And on stage? “If the Eagles would start touring again, that would be great.”
“We offer live music usually two Thursdays a month,” says owner John Hawkins. “Whether you’re in the mood for blues, country, traditional Celtic music, or just about anything in between, we keep our lineup fresh and updated.”

Latin Jazz Project rocks a tour, CD and gigs galore by Joli A. Hohenstein Looking to get your groove on? Just follow the rockin’ rhythms of Millikin’s Latin Jazz Project.
The offshoot of MU’s acclaimed World Percussion Ensemble has come into its own, recently performing at the Jazz Educators Network National Conference in Atlanta, releasing its third CD in January and heading out on a Chicago tour in March. Oh, and becoming one of the first student groups to travel to Cuba, studying with a world-renowned percussionist. No worries, though, you can catch the rhythm right here in Decatur. The group regularly performs around the area, with gigs at local watering holes like Katz on Merchant and Lock Stock and Barrel. “You can dance, you can listen—there are just a lot of things happening with this group,” says Director Brian Justison, Millikin’s Coordinator of Percussion Studies. That’s of course in addition to popular performances at Kirkland Fine Arts Center. The annual Synergy concert, held in February, showcases Latin Jazz Project along with all of Millikin’s Percussion Ensembles in a collaboration across the Fine Arts Department. The Ensembles’ Halloween Concert sells out every year. And on April 28, the Percussion Ensembles will present their Masterworks Concert, featuring the premiere of a commissioned work for electronics & percussion by Daniel Wohl.

Cuban-Influenced Latin Jazz Outside the hallowed concert halls, Latin Jazz Project keeps the joint jumpin’, too, with its distinctive Cuban-influenced fusion of styles from salsa to timba. “Salsa is synonymous with Cuban music, and salsa has its epicenter in Cuba,” Brian says of the group’s style. “Timba is a fusion of all Cuban styles. We bring all of those together.” The group takes its Cuban roots seriously, even becoming one of the first student groups to travel into the country after regulations changed. They had the honor of studying under one of the world’s leading percussionists, Jose Eladio Amat, at Havana’s premier music school, Escuela Nacional de Arte (National School for the Arts). Ten strong, the group features five percussionists, two horn players, guitar, bass, and drums, and occasionally Brian himself jumps in on percussion.
Expanding the Catalog
As the group’s popularity picks up speed, so does their performance schedule. A recent Rumba & Romance event combining Latin music, dancing, demos and lessons at Katz on Merchant was a hit across town. Like everything the group does, it puts a new rhythm to Decatur’s jazz roots. “We want to make a connection to the community,” says Brian.
