Millie & Bo's Barks Up the Right Tree
Where do the best dressed dogs in Decatur style and profile? Why, Millie & Bo’s Barkery, of course! They go for the feel-good feeling, not only from looking good on the outside but for having done some good just by shopping. Ten percent of all profits goes to local animal care agencies and rescue organizations. In fact, you may have noticed that’s a growing part of Millie & Bo’s business— they’re seen more and more frequently at local events supporting animals. That’s because the real Millie & Bo are rescue dogs, beloved by their owners Dr. Larry and Angee Baker, founders of the Barkery. “This time of year we’re going to lots of shows and events, like [Homeward Bound’s] Woofstock and other events benefiting shelters or rescuing animals in need,” says Millie & Bo’s Store Manager Jennifer Voelker. “We get our name out but also help rescues and organizations—since that’s what we’re all about.” That passion for pets translates into dayto-day business, with this unique boutique offering a selection of tricks and treats to make any pooch say “Bowwow!” Spring clothes, dresses and shirts are all the rage right now, with trendy owls and flowers making regular appearances. Also in: the “vintage-y” style, as Jen has coined it. A new palette of teals and Tiffany blue freshen looks for canines of all walks. They cater to all sizes, though as she points out, “It’s hard to find clothes for larger dogs, especially cute dresses!”
The full Millie & Bo’s selection features Cardinals and Cubs gear and toys, bedding, collars, harnesses, leashes, toys, grooming items, home décor and even human apparel. Anything can be made into gift baskets, gift wrap is available while you wait, and they ship anywhere UPS does. Particularly popular: breed-specific gifts like wall hangings, pillows, pens and mugs, plus personalizable dog bowls and treat jars. Of course the real drool comes with their Gourmutt Pet Treats, especially their cookies, which are fresh baked in house. The most popular are the oatmeal small bites. Seasonal iced cookies are dipped and decorated in yogurt for holidays, birthdays or any occasion. New flavors include the Elvis cookie, a peanut butter, bacon and banana concoction.

Survey of the Month
Dogs vs. Cats The world is divided into two groups: crazy people who let animals with limited skills and high need for support into their homes, and crazy people who don’t. From there, we can divide pet owners into people who encourage their pets to poop in a box inside their home, and those who don’t. This month, we’re asking Decatur a basic dating question. The ultimate shortcutto-learning-about-you question:
Are you a dog person or a cat person? Notice you can say “neither” but not “both.” There is no such thing as a “both” person. If you think you’re a “both” person, consider: If you could only have one, which would you choose? Now you realize that you’re going to have an awkward conversation with your cat.
Dog Person 66% Cat Person 26% Neither 8% The best part about asking this question is the absolute certainty people had about their choice. They didn’t have to denigrate dogs as being needy or cats as evil. But there was one really great quote that stuck out.
“Neither. We have two dogs, but the truth is neither.” Based on 2010 Census data, the margin of error for this survey is +/- 16.56%. Seriously, this is the opposite of scientific. photo: grumpycat.com

THE FOOD DUDE
by T. F. DUDE
CherryBerry Summertime is just around the corner, and you know what that means: notoriously hot central Illinois weather. But have no fear! Fate has once again smiled upon our fair city and given us an awesome new place to cool off and satisfy our sweet tooth at the same time! That place is CherryBerry Frozen Yogurt. I, like many others, braved the long lines to check this place out during its opening weekend, and it was awesome. But, for journalistic accuracy (and the satisfaction of my tummy), I went back again when it was significantly less crazy to really take it all in. Not that it takes too much to want to go back! This place has it all: bright, friendly atmosphere, delicious frozen yogurt, and all the crazy toppings you could ever ask for. CherryBerry is a self-serve yogurt bar, which is great because you get to decide what you want and how much you want. You can get a little or a lot; it’s totally up to you. Once you figure out what flavors you want (more on those in a bit), you move on to the toppings. I’ve been to some ice cream and yogurt bars in my time, but I have never seen the amount of stuff they have here to put on your yogurt. There’s at least 40, if not more, different candies, nuts, or fruit to work with. Heck, they even have cereal and waffle cone pieces! But enough about the toppings! Let’s talk about the yogurt! For me, this has got to be one of, if not the best, frozen yogurts I’ve ever had. It’s light but still has a creaminess that I’ve never really experienced before. When it comes to flavors, CherryBerry knocks it out of the park. They’ve got all of the classic flavors like vanilla, strawberry and chocolate, but what’s even better are the specialty flavors! They’ve got birthday cake, peanut butter, peach medley, and my personal favorite, salted caramel pretzel! On top of those, they also offer two different
flavors of sorbet, watermelon and orange. The other great thing about this yogurt is that it’s kinda good for you! Yes that’s right, nearly guilt free sweets! CherryBerry yogurt is either low fat or no fat depending on the flavor, and they usually have at least two no-sugar-added flavors to choose from. Like I said before, my favorite flavor is the salted caramel pretzel, but I try to mix it up a bit. The last time I went, I put a nice layer of peach on the bottom and topped it with my already stated favorite. This may sound kind of weird, but hey, it’s my bowl and I can fill it how I want! I topped it off with some waffle cone pieces, coconut flakes, and some of these little juice-filled balls that reminded me of fruit snacks. (You have to try those things; they’re awesome!) So this summer, as the temperature climbs and the urge for a cool treat consumes you, head on over to CherryBerry, the new hot spot for something cool!

Pick of the Month Just a little something we ran across and wanted to share.
Big Dog on Campus $9.00 from University Dogs 1135 West Wood Street, Suite #4
Billed as a “half-pound footlong hot dog worthy of any mascot,” this bad boy more than lives up to its name. I tried it with kraut and mustard and was, to say the least, blown away. I had them throw on the grill (they offer that option with all of their dogs) and loved the flavor. Big and juicy and on a big, hearty, sub-style bun, it more than satisfied. (Notice any overwhelming theme here?) When I asked the staff if we need fries with that, I got a laugh and the comeback, “We hope that’s enough!” Of course, I wasn't REALLY the Big Dog on Campus—I didn’t take the Challenge. Are you up for it? Take 25 minutes to finish not one, but TWO 1/2 lb. footlong Vienna Beef hot dogs and a large chili, cheese and chopped onion Disaster Fry! If you try it—and especially if you win—send pictures!

ART SPEAK
Paws for a Cause Now that spring is finally here, everyone’s looking for outdoor activities. That’s why Blue Connection, Millikin’s student-run retail art gallery, is hosting Paws for a Cause on Friday, May 3, from 5-7:30 p.m. on the street in front of the Madden Arts Center in downtown Decatur. Presented by Millikin University’s Carriage House Press and Macon County Animal Shelter Foundation, this event will use art and art making to focus attention on the Animal Shelter’s work finding homes for adoptable pets. It’s offered in conjunction with the Spring Art Fair, presented inside and outside the Madden Arts Center. You can watch students create prints using traditional techniques along with a unique, nontraditional technique. They’ll take over North Water Street to create giant woodcut prints, 3 feet square, using a steamroller instead of a printing press. According to Millikin Art Professor Lyle Salmi, “Our previous steamroller event last fall received overwhelmingly positive feedback. Let’s be honest, running over something with a steamroller—who doesn’t want to see that?” The Animal Shelter will have a booth giving visitors the opportunity to meet some the adoptable pets, as well as booths selling food and drink. A silent auction from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
by Jerry Johnson
inside Blue Connection will offer woodcut prints created by students based on photos taken of pets at the shelter. Also on the street, nearly 20 Millikin University seniors will present artistic impressions of Decatur. Perceptions Public Art Display, part of the Spring Art Fair, was created by students who spent the semester touring Decatur, collecting materials and having conversations with community members. Presentations range from original songs and multimedia dance presentations to a fashion show of found objects. The Spring Art Fair continues inside the Madden Arts Center in the Anne Lloyd Gallery with the Barn Colony Artists, Inc., Annual Spring Show. The exhibit showcases group members’ progress in skill and enthusiasm over the past year. On the third floor, the Decatur Public School District 61 Middle & High School Art Show will be host to a reception recognizing artwork from students across the District. Enjoy a great evening out on North Water Street Friday evening, May 3, for Paws for a Cause and the Spring Art Fair. Enjoy art created by Decatur artists of all ages, and learn about perceptions of our community as seen through fresh eyes. Then see art being created with construction equipment and meet new furry friends. A great time to paws and reflect!
Jerry Johnson is the Executive Director of the Decatur Area Arts Council and may be spotted pretty much anywhere art is happening. 12 | may 2013

Decatur area dog lovers, UNITE! by Rachel Stuart
Every dog has its day, especially at Progress City USA this spring for two local AKC canine competitive events. Area kennel and training clubs are bringing some big-time competition to the local stage, and we’ve got the details on tail waggin’ entertainment that’s just doggone delightful. New to the competitive dog show scene? Great, so are we—but don’t let that discourage you. Local dog shows and agility trials offer some serious entertainment value for an amazingly low cost.
Progress City Cluster AKC Championship Dog Show – April 24-28

“We’re a small show, but small shows help make top dogs,” says Merle, noting the deep quality you can expect from the 670 entries for this year’s show. Merle is himself an AKC competition veteran who has shown since the mid-’70s. Today, he and his wife are less competitive with their Scottish Terriers, instead focusing their competitive energies toward dog show judging careers. His suggestions for what to check out at the Progress City Cluster: • See a breed you’ve never seen before. Have you ever seen a Chinese Shar-Pei or an Old English sheepdog in person? Consider checking out the 2013 additions to the AKC recognized breed list: Russell Terriers and Treeing Walker Coonhounds. • See high-quality dogs. “Although a small show, the Progress City Cluster isn’t lacking on quality. Nationally ranked competitors will be in attendance and vying for championship honors,” says Merle.
This event, hosted by three area kennel clubs – Champaign Illinois Kennel Club, Mattoon Kennel Club and Sandemac Kennel Club – offers a four-day lineup of • Learn what AKC Conformation AKC all-breed competition. Merle Taylor, Competition is all about. “The purpose cluster co-chair and Champaign Illinois of conformation competition is to evaluate Kennel Club president, invites you to breeding stock,” he says. Each dog’s overall watch entrants—including Westminster appearance and structure are examined and Eukanuba veterans—from throughout and compared against their peers. The the Midwest. For $5 per car, what’s not top dogs are the ones who best represent to love? their breed’s AKC standards. 14 | may 2013
• Standard Course. “The standard course consists of completing various ‘contact’ obstacles such as the dog walk, A-frame and teeter-totter, as well as various types of jumps, tunnels and weave pole challenges,” says Ken Michels, agility trial chairman and member of the Decatur Obedience Training Club. “The teams are judged on both speed and accuracy to determine qualifying scores and placements.” • Jumpers with Weaves. Jumps, tunnels and weave poles—oh my!
photo: Ken Michels
Individual breed classes take place during the day, with best of show competitions each afternoon. Other events not to miss: Purebreds in PINK on Saturday, April 27, with proceeds going toward Breast Cancer Awareness and attendees encouraged to wear pink. Also that evening, the Champaign Illinois Kennel Club is hosting a match for future AKC competitors. Registered AKC puppies and their handlers are invited to practice competition and gain experience in the show ring.
Progress City AKC Agility Trials – May 10-12 If you consider yourself an adventure seeker, the AKC agility trials may be your speed. AKC agility teams run, jump and weave their way through obstacle courses designed to show dogs’ and handlers’ ability to work together as a team as they navigate various courses working toward a qualifying score. Watch competitors maneuver their way through four different types of courses:
• FAST (Fifteen And Send Time). “This class requires teams to develop their own strategy to successfully complete enough obstacles, as well as a distance challenge in the specified time, to earn enough points to get a qualifying score,” says Ken. “Teams are judged on point accumulation and the completion of a distance challenge.” • Time 2 Beat. “This event is similar to the standard class except that all skill levels of dog and handler teams run the same course,” he says. The teams work to post the time to beat against other dogs in their jump height and class.
This is an outdoor event that’s free to the public. Runs start at 9 am on Friday and 8 am on Saturday and Sunday.
Put Your Best Paw Forward At either local AKC event, it’s important for all show-goers to be respectful of the dogs and their handlers by following these simple rules: • Don’t pet the dogs unless the owner gives you permission. • Stay back from the ring, be quiet during performances and avoid eating close to the animals. • Leave your pets at home, and consider registering them for a future AKC event. • Be conscious of the dogs’ and their handlers’ time. If they’re preparing to go into the ring, save your questions for them until after they’re done. may 2013 | 15

Giddy Up—Big Creek Riding Center Season Is Off and Running! written by Joli A. Hohenstein | photo compliments of the Decatur Park District
30 | may 2013
Big Creek Riding Center has your ticket to ride—or watch! Whether you’re ready to saddle up or ride the rails like a true spectator does, you’ll find your breed of fun on the east side of Decatur. “Horses are a magical kind of animal,” says Manager Rebecca Lloyd. “And horse people are a different breed—very friendly, and they always want to sell you on what they’re doing.” Which makes Big Creek’s many events the perfect opportunity to get to know these gentle giants and everything that surrounds them. You’re in luck—May kicks off events season at the arena.
Fast-Paced Entertainment
The May 4 cattle event by the Southern Illinois Team Penning Association features penning and sorting by experts from Illinois and Missouri. Watch fast-moving teams on horses move groups of cattle according to different assignments such as by number or three of the same number. On May 11, the Illinois Fox Trotter Horse Association comes to Decatur for the first time with their Open Fun Horse Show fundraiser. See showmanship demonstrations, pleasure class competitions and speed events for youth and adults. This breed is known for its signature gait: the fluid, diagonal four-beat fox trot—fun to watch! Then on May 18-19 comes the Decatur Trail Riders Speed Show. A longtime Decatur fixture—they’ve been around since 1940!—the group brings in competitors from a multi-state area. Catch barrel racing, where riders complete a clover leaf pattern around three barrels before crossing the finish line, or pole bending, when riders race in a set pattern around six poles without knocking any over. Did you know that world champion barrel racers often take home some of the highest season earnings of any professional rodeo athlete? On June 8, some of the area’s most enthusiastic competitors come to Big Creek in the Macon-Piatt County 4H Horse Show. 4H-ers, all youth 18 and under, do all the work, caring for their horses, grooming, training, cleaning stalls, and then compete in this friendly competition to the cheers of fans like us. Anyone can and should come to a horse show, says Rebecca. “They’re completely different than any other event,” she explains. “There’s a lot of camaraderie, and if you want to ask questions, people will always tell you what you want to know.”
Saddle Up
Want a closer experience with horses? Big Creek offers lessons for beginners on up, from ages 4 to infinity. Cost is $30 per lesson (length varies with ability and age). Lessons start in May and are by appointment. “We teach more than riding,” says Rebecca. “We teach them grooming, cleaning stalls, picking feet, everything they need to know about a horse.”
Continued on page 32
Continued from page 31 In fact, lessons aren’t the only way to get to know Big Creek’s horses. The center constantly hosts groups for field trips and educational sessions, and they often take a horse or pony on location to teach horsemanship or just familiarize kids with large animals. Parents regularly bring kids to walk the stables and visit the horses. “We had a church group from Decatur out, and many of the kids had never seen any animals but dogs and cats,” she says. The YMCA will be bringing a group out soon; daycares come frequently, and the center participates in events like Ag Day at Richland Community College and hosts horse care clinics for the Mt. Zion Recreation Department. “We have four horses on loan for our lesson programs,” says Rebecca, “so we can always find the right horse for you.” Bill is a Quarter Horse belonging to a Millikin senior (who’s sadly going to have to sell him when she graduates), and Twister is a former

show pony who was ranked in his prime. Hercules is Rebecca’s own, a Shetland full of personality and aptly named. The matriarch is Dotty, a 26-year-old pony still great for riding. Because Big Creek is owned by the Park District, and the Park District doesn’t own any horses, the center doesn’t offer public trail rides. BUT, if you own or have access to a horse, you’re welcome to take advantage of their 2 ½ to 3 miles of trails. (You can also use them for hiking; simply beware of, ahem, land mines. After all, this is horse country.) Just check in at the office and pay the nominal $10 fee. Get There: Big Creek Riding Center 4961 E.
