SPOTLIGHT

by Joli Hohenstein

West End Decatur Reunion Rocks ‘Til the Street Lights Come On Where do West End Girls (and Boys) come to play? Back in the day, it was always Kiwanis Park, and thanks to Brian Pierce and his posse, it’s back in the mix. Every three years, the West End Decatur Reunion brings together West End alums from all over, and this is the year! The idea formed in 2010 when Brian reconnected on Facebook with an old friend who commented that she’d like to see more people. The “West End Decatur” Facebook page was born, with up to 1,000 likes in just a few weeks. Within a month or two, more than 2,000 had liked it, and today they’re at more than 2,800. That spun off the idea for the West End Decatur Reunion, and Brian and a few old chums organized the event as an opportunity to see people from all walks. “You know, you go to your class reunions and it’s great, but you only see people in your class—I always wanted to see other people, of all ages,” says Brian. The 2010 Reunion, held at Kiwanis Park because “in the ‘70s that was probably the busiest park in the city,” drew about 500 people—hundreds more than they expected. Brian’s old t-ball coach came all the way from California, and friends and family from across the country gathered.

They got a band, offered print-on-demand t-shirts, opened the concession stand selling ‘70s candy and sold Bondoogle (the kitschy game of the time). The event was, unquestionably, a success. But the question on everyone’s minds was, when’s the next one? “This is like a job,” said Brian. “I can only do this every few years; let’s say three.” And from there it was on. The 2013 edition will be held August 3, the same weekend as the Decatur Celebration and several area class reunions, including Brian’s, providing even more opportunity for connections. The appropriately titled West End Blues Project will perform, west end business University Dogs will bring the Dogs-Mobile to feed the masses, and the concession stand will be open again with retro ‘70s style candy offerings. Prevailing upon five friends to help organize, Brian suspects the event has grown immensely. In fact, the Decatur Park District, who graciously assents to the use of Kiwanis Park, projects attendance at more than 1,000. But for Brian, it’s not about numbers or funds or entertainment. “We want people to talk to each other, see old friends and reconnect,” he says. “We want to celebrate Kiwanis Park because that’s where we all grew up.”

In fact, he and his friends have such fond memories that they coined a tagline based on childhood memories: “Til the street lights come on” evokes the old universal signal for the end of playtime. And this event’s family friendly, too—bring your lawn chairs, lawn games, even your own food and drink. Last time, kids cracked open the baseball diamonds and tether ball circles and got into fun they may have never experienced. And that’s something in particular Brian loves seeing. “It used to be those diamonds were always full all day—you don’t see that any more,” he says. “My dad probably umped more games there than anyone else at that park.” They’d hoped he’d be there to help celebrate the park’s resurgence, but sadly, he passed away in December. This Reunion will be dedicated to him. “He loved the West End and loved Kiwanis Park, so it’s fitting,” says Brian. Often asked how much they make off the event or what the admission price is, Brian always has the same response: “It’s not about money or profit. Growing up in the West End was special to us, and that park is special to us. We do this from our hearts.”

Thrive's

Survey of the Month

THE FOOD DUDE

Coz's Pizza

Considering myself a pizza connoisseur dude, I finally gave into the urge and dropped into Mt. Zion’s Coz’s Pizza. This also fulfilled a nagging question of whether they’re affiliated with the Springfield version. Similar menu and logo! My buddy Moe and I hit the joint for some good old fashioned pizza pie. Except it’s more than that, to our delight! A gigantic menu awaited us, full of not just pizza but wings, sandwiches, pub food and more. (We’re told the walleye special is a must, and if the percentage of takers was any indicator, we need to go back.) On top of that, the pizza is anything but ordinary. I mean sure, you can get your traditional pizzas, but there’s some creativity here, too. Like the grilled chicken pizza, or the Italian beef pizza (with white sauce, no less!). Moe and I opted to go for both and requested the Coz’s Special (sausage, mushroom, onion and pepper) plus the Hot Hawaiian (ham, pineapple, jalapeño, bacon and bbq drizzle). Also on our comeback list: the double decker, which is just what it sounds like.

by T. F. DUDE

At the waitress’ behest (and OK, maybe a little drooling), we started with the Garlic Cheese Crust, a tasty creation of folded Coz's dough topped with garlic butter and mozzarella cheese and served with marinara. More than lived up to the waitress’ billing as “the best appetizer on the menu!” Then came the pizza. Setting aside the fact that it’s awesome that they offer individual sizes for endless sharing combinations… This pizza rocks! Thin-ish with a bit of crunch, yet slightly doughy in thicker spots. Sweet tomatoey sauce with a good blend of spices. The Special was the great kitchen sink pizza, with huge chunks of thick-cut vegetables piled high under just the right amount of mozzarella. The Hot Hawaiian is where it gets interesting. That bbq drizzle (a sweet yet smoky style accent) was a great partner for the traditional ham and pineapple pairing. The bacon kicked it up a notch, and the jalapeño kept things kickin’. Were we to go back (and we will!), we’ll be sure to try the waitress’ other can’t miss: parmesan pretzel bites, apparently delicious for dippin’. And there are any number of sandwiches we’d like to get our mouths on. Like the Pork and Plum Wrap, a grilled hand-cut pork tenderloin topped with shredded lettuce, green peppers, and sweet plum sauce in a soft flour tortilla. Or the Pizza Torpedo, a sub bun topped with pizza sauce, shredded mozzarella, sausage, pepperoni, onion and green pepper, baked and served with a side of marinara. All in all, we’d have them throw a pie anytime!

Get There: Coz's Pizza & Pub 1405 Village Pkwy, Mt Zion 864-1311 The Food Dude is not a professional critic. He just really, really likes food.

Pick of the Month Just a little something we ran across and wanted to share.

Heinkel's

Polish Sausages $3.99

It seems like we finally made it to grilling season! I was stoked to find these Polish Sausages from our very own Heinkel's Packing Co. of Decatur when shopping at County Market. It's nice to know that even when you find yourself in a big box store, you can still choose local! Keep your eyes peeled for Heinkel's products in The House of Meats, Butcher Block Plus, and yes, even chains like County Market and Kroger. I look forward to grilling these and going back for more. With all the buzz about the hot dog eating contest at the Decatur Celebration, I've worked up a hankerin', so next time I'll be stocking up on hot dogs (packaged as weiners), and I might even try them in Jalape単o Cheese!

ART SPEAK

Theatre 7 Strikes Gold

Congratulations to THRIVE magazine on its 50th issue! This year the number 50 is significant to another organization in Decatur. Theatre 7, Decatur’s community theatre, is celebrating its golden anniversary during the upcoming 201314 season. Over the past half-century, Theatre 7 has staged nearly 180 shows consisting of musicals, comedies, mysteries and dramas. The group has taken its productions to locations across the city, including the Masonic Temple, Millikin University’s Albert Taylor Theater and Kirkland Fine Arts Center, the Decatur Civic Center Theater, churches, high school auditoriums, taverns and even an automobile sales showroom. Its first full production, the comedy Light Up the Sky, was staged in May 1964 at Eisenhower High School. Theatre 7’s My Fair Lady, presented in 1971, was among the first shows mounted in the newly built Kirkland Fine Arts Center. In November 1980, Theatre 7 christened the stage of the new Decatur Civic Center with the musical Hello Dolly. Today, the group performs in Richland Community College’s Shilling Auditorium. Theatre 7 has offered the Decatur community the opportunity not only to enjoy many terrific shows but also to be a part of them. As an all-volunteer group, Theatre 7 welcomes anyone interested in getting involved in both performing onstage and working backstage. Join the actors, costumers and set crew at Theatre 7’s headquarters, 131 N. Water St. (across from Central Park)…where all the magic starts.

by Sue Powell

To celebrate its 50-year milestone, Theatre 7 will present another outstanding three-show season (to be announced later this summer), along with a variety of other fun activities throughout the community. It all starts in August when Theatre 7 invites you to join them in the Decatur Celebration’s Razzle Dazzle Good Times Parade. Also at the Celebration, Theatre 7 will offer up a couple of fun surprises, the Golden Spontaneous Community Pianos and the Improv Mob. Kicking off the 2013-14 season will be another community event, the Theatre 7 Golden Gala on Sept. 14 at the Decatur Club. This will be an evening of food, show tunes, colorful costumes and great memories. Watch for information on how to get tickets. In December, join Theatre 7 in the Downtown Lighted Christmas Parade. Wrapping up the 50th year will be a banquet to celebrate the 2013-14 season and express appreciation for the thousands of people who made Theatre 7’s first 50 years possible. These people are just like you, your friends, neighbors and co-workers. Theatre 7 invites you to become part of this group of ordinary people working together to do extraordinary things over the next 50 years. Want to get involved or get more info?
