BEHIND THE

THRIVE

This month we’ve got a veritable feast for your tastebuds, senses and entertainment instincts. In our continuing quest to dispel the myth that there’s nothing to do in Decatur, we’ve rounded up a range of cultural curiosities from food to music to more. There’s a big Brew Ha Ha! brewing in the Arts Council’s third annual Oktoberfeststyle celebration featuring beer, polka and bratwurst.

CONGRATS TO OUR AUGUST WINNER:

Peter Churukian

Keep your tastebuds rolling with a virtual visit to one of Richland’s Culinary Luncheons—these shindigs are guaranteed to get your goat (hint, with ice cream this time)! We caught up with 365-Day Song Challenge champion Jesse Hite, and you can catch this one-man band all around town.

August Answers:

1. Iced tea becomes lemonade 2. Extra breadstick appears 3. Cherry tomato disappears 4. Pasta disappears 5. Extra flower appears in vase 6. Ponytail gets shorter

Perhaps our favorites this issue are the Decatur Party Crashers, who personify THRIVE’s mission to show Decatur what entertainment is. This socially driven group chooses a different event to “crash” each week and then descends on it en masse for fun and frivolity. That’s our kind of party!

Blues In Central Park It was a gorgeous night on Thursday, August 15, as Blues in Central Park wrapped up its 2013 summer program. Rick Estrin & The Nightcats, award-winning musicians from San Francisco, graced the stage while hundreds of spectators watched from blankets and camping chairs in the newly designed Central Park.

YMCA Back Pack Attack Families in need with children entering K-6th grades were invited to the Decatur Family YMCA on Saturday, August 10, to play games, see a puppet show, jump in inflatable bouncy houses and, most importantly, receive a backpack filled with school supplies. With the help of community partners including ADM, CAT and Neuhoff Media, the Decatur Family YMCA was able to distribute over 2,200 backpacks during the 3rd annual YMCA Backpack Attack.

A One-Man Band and a 365-Day Song Challenge photo: compliments of Jesse Hite

Did you hear the one about the musician who undertook a self-imposed Song Challenge to learn a song a day for a year? So did we, and we wondered, after learning 365 songs (when you don’t read music), did he swear off the guitar forever? Many musicians might, but for Forsyth native Jesse Hite, the Song Challenge simply whetted his appetite for all things melodic, and posting them on YouTube added to the intrigue. “The best thing about it was accomplishing it,” says Jesse. “I heard from people in Argentina, Brazil, Australia. It was cool to reach worldwide.” How did he keep the inspiration going? “Most days I’d wake up hearing a song in my head; sometimes I posted on Facebook, ‘What do you want to hear today?’” he says. As he looks at the full year’s repertoire he created, he’s hard pressed to find a favorite, though he does have a soft spot for his version of Sweet Disposition by Australian band The Temper Trap. “I’d never heard an acoustical version before,” he says. “But that’s the cool thing. All musical backgrounds dig the challenge.” Learning covers of 365 songs is no small feat, but Jesse took it a step further and played them acoustically. It gets better. He’s been playing the

guitar since the age of 10 and even had lessons, but he never learned to read music. You read that right. He’s taught himself hundreds of songs, by the likes of Elvis, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Neon Trees, Poison, Elton John and beyond, but he doesn’t actually read a note. It’s all by ear. Whether performing alone or with a group, he’s learning it all for himself by hearing the notes. Recent gigs have included private parties in Chicago with his brother and their bass player friend, and he regularly graces the stages at Paco’s Sol Bistro and The Lincoln Lounge. For the solo gigs, he’s a literal one-man band. “I made a bass drum out of a guitar case, and I play harmonica, play guitar and sing,” he says. Now back at college (he’s a business marketing major at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville), he’s home often putting the one-man band back together. The ultimate goal, of course? “I’d like to play guitar for a living.” Get There: Jesse Hite October 18 Paco’s Sol Bistro, Decatur November 27 The Lincoln Lounge, Decatur November 29 Paco’s Sol Bistro, Decatur

Survey of the Month

Remember when we had that giant snowstorm this spring? Remember when I had this great realization we were going to have a baby boom in Decatur nine months later? Well, lower your expectations. I worked some of my many connections and got in touch with . . . let’s just say someone who knows. Using a list of women who are pregnant for the next six months (don’t ask), we’ve figured out the percentages of the total patients who were due in August through the end of February.

As you can see, there doesn’t appear to be any baby boom. Not even a baby bump. Other than a little dip in expected births in November, due dates just seem to be moving along right about at the average. Decatur, maybe we need to have a talk about the birds and the bees? september 2013 | 09

THE FOOD DUDE

by T. F. DUDE

Richland Serves Up Culinary Champions

As several of you savvy foodies might know already, the Culinary Arts Institute at Richland Community College has been hosting culinary lunches and dinners. This particular lunch was special because they served Chef Ryan Rogiers’ winning recipe created with his stepson for the White House’s Healthy Lunchtime Challenge. So what sort of recipe has even the First Lady impressed? A black bean wrap with Jicamagrilled corn salsa. Yum! First we received a delightfully refreshing smoothie of pineapple, watermelon, and–who would have guessed it?–basil. I was surprised at how well the basil complemented the fruity flavor! Then staff presented us with the much awaited, drool-worthy black bean wrap. The main entrée was burrito-esque, wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla. On the inside was a black bean puree with onion, carrots, celery, olive oil and quinoa (a tiny seed that comes from the Andes and is packed with protein). The wrap was also accompanied by sweet-flavored jicama-grilled corn salsa, giving the puree some extra texture and crunch. As a side dish, we were offered two smokyflavored grilled shrimp served with a citrusy garden gazpacho. I devoured the perfectlycooked shrimp in seconds flat and found myself trying to eagerly dig out the remnants of the marinade with my fork. It helped that the main course was good for us because what came next would not be so good for the non-elastic waistband of my pants.

Students from the Pastry Fundamentals class offered a selection of nine unique desserts. I was left to feel like Indiana Jones choosing which cup was the Holy Grail. I had narrowed it down to the Brown Butter Goat's Milk Ice Cream or the Chocolate Mousse Bomb. I’ve always enjoyed a little goat cheese on my salad or pizza or stuffed into a chicken breast–so why not try some ice cream made with goat’s milk? I found the ice cream was delicious and creamy. It came in a frozen crepe that was shaped more like a cup than a traditional crepe. It was “garnished” with some orange shortbread cookies and a candied orange slice. I happened to really love the earthy, tangy taste, but it’s certainly not your typical vanilla-flavored ice cream. I’ve gotta say, the overall eating experience was just plain fun! My table-friends noted that they might not have been adventurous enough to order these recipes off a restaurant menu, but they were exceptionally happy they came that day to try something new. Who knew eating amazing food could be so educational?

With Brew Ha Ha! quickly approaching, I thought I'd start getting serious about my conditioning. Sure, I tasted the goods from the McGorray's Craft Beer tent at the Celebration and have stopped by Donnie's Homespun for an Old Rasputin Imperial Stout Beer from time to time, but these days, crosstraining is all the rage. I thought it prudent to switch up my program. With a quick stop to The Decanter Fine Wines & Spirits in downtown Decatur, I scored a 3-Grain Belgian Ale (Tripel Karmeliet) plus a bottle of Rare Vos ($8.79), which is a Belgian-Style Amber Ale. They're both quite enjoyable, but I never had a doubt. The experts at The Decanter do a great job of pairing beer or wine to my taste! september 2013 | 11

ART SPEAK

by Jerry Johnson

3 Rs and an A – Add Arts for Your Kids I’m writing this column on opening day of the school year in Decatur. Some kids are off for their first day of kindergarten and others for their senior year of high school. Their lists of required school supplies may differ, but it’s my hope that there is room somewhere in those bulging backpacks for a few art supplies. I hope there will be time in their classrooms devoted to important subjects like music, dance, painting or poetry. And when I say “time,” I mean more than 30 minutes of arts education each week. The arts can’t be learned through occasional or random exposure any more than math or science can. Test scores in the three Rs are only one reflection of student growth. Students need to be thinkers, have people skills, be problem-solvers, demonstrate creativity and work as a member of a team. The arts provide exposure to all of these skills. They also provide non-academic benefits like confidence, self-discipline, perseverance, flexibility and appreciation of diversity.

and Richland Community College. The Decatur Area Arts Council offers a wide variety of arts classes for everyone, ages two years old and up. The arts are what make our lives richer, more complete and, let’s face it, more fun. THRIVE is an entertainment magazine, and virtually everything we view as entertaining is an art form. Offer your kids the chance to learn something that is fun and challenging and that they’ll cherish for the rest of their lives. Who knows—maybe next time they ask you to help with homework, you’ll want to because it’ll be fun. If you aren’t sure where to look for an arts experience, give the Decatur Area Arts Council a call (423-3189), and we’ll do our best to help you find it.

Encourage your kids to explore the arts, and find out which ones speak to them. Maybe they’ll want to learn to play a musical instrument, paint watercolors, dance ballet or act in a play. You can find many examples of arts opportunities for your kids in our local schools. They can sign up for band with Jason Waddell at Argenta-Oreana. At Warrensburg-Latham, they can take an art class with Jacob Manning. Christopher Weisenborn offers choir and stage musicals to students at Maroa-Forsyth. If your school doesn’t offer the opportunity that your child is looking for, then look around the community. You’ll find quite a few outstanding dance programs. There are theatre experiences for kids available through the Decatur Park District

2012 Brew Ha Ha! Photo: Kim Mangan

As your fall calendars fill up with family activities and charitable events, we encourage you to keep the 3rd annual Brew Ha Ha! in mind. The Brew Dude and

his friends at the Decatur Area Arts Council are hard at work finalizing the details for this year’s event slated for Saturday, September 28. While all your favorite beer-guzzling activities and German-inspired munchies will still be present, the Brew Ha Ha! is changing locations this year. The Brew Dude has answered the cries from the masses and agreed to host the event “street party” style in front of the Madden Arts Center beginning at 6:00 pm. Brew Ha Ha! is a rousing, social, fundraising tent party celebrating Bavarian culture benefiting the Decatur Area Arts Council. Proceeds from this event will help provide DAAC classroom grants for area educators, free First Friday gallery openings and PASS programming for area grade school students. Tickets to attend are $35 a person and include tantalizing Heinkel’s bratwurst and the 100-year-old family recipe for bockworst, delectable side dishes ala McGorray’s Golf and Grille and domestic draft beer provided by Skeff Distributing. Party goers will have the opportunity to listen to Polka accordion music, participate in the beer stein hoisting contest, toss bags and play beer pong while enjoying an assortment of German craft beers. At 8 pm the party will kick it up a notch with local band favorite, The Veggies,

continued from page 15 who said this about Brew Ha Ha!, "We're so excited to be a part of this fun and unique event to support the arts. Not to mention, German beer and sausage are always great with a side of Veggies!” In addition to the array of live entertainment and drinking games, Mark Scranton and Josh Rohrscheib will be debating the issues, shaking hands and kissing babies in their quests to be named Mayor of Brew Ha Ha!

Mark Scranton kicked off his race in early August by pledging “ice cold beer and tasty smoked sausage and brats for everyone!” He encouraged all to “vote for me early and often!” While the validity of his challenge has yet to be verified, Josh Rohrscheib countered Mark’s claim by stating publicly, “A vote for Mark Scranton is a vote for the reinstatement of prohibition and replacing pork and brats with tofurkey and tofsausage. Vote for Josh Rohrscheib for overflowing frosty mugs of beer with the word "beer" written on the mugs in cartooned icicles.” Both candidates clearly want to be named Mayor of Brew Ha Ha! and need your votes to make it happen! As you call the DAAC at 4233189 or stop in at McGorray’s Golf and Grille to secure your tickets for the event, cast your vote (one per ticket purchased) for your favorite mayoral candidate. Additional votes can be bought–or rather–cast at the event when you purchase German craft beers from one of the two designated bars.

And as if that wasn’t enough, party goers can also dress in their finest lederhosen and colorful dirndl dresses to participate in the Brew Ha Ha! costume contest. In his first act as Mayor of Brew Ha Ha!, the winning candidate will judge contest participants. While not available for immediate comment on the subject, it has been rumored that both mayoral candidates are willing to trade costume votes for mayoral votes. To help the Decatur Area Arts Council get the word out about Brew Ha Ha!, the Brew Dude is taking to the streets of Decatur. In the coming weeks, he’ll be found at area restaurants and pubs slinging drinks with the prettiest of barmaids and hanging out with some of Decatur’s finest servers. The best way to track his movement is to like him on Facebook at www. facebook.com/Brewhahadude.

You Can Crash My Party Decatur Party Crashers Spotlight Area Entertainment By Joli A. Hohenstein

Further proof of Decatur’s entertainment overload: Organizers of the Decatur Party Crashers group thought there was so much to do, people have trouble choosing. So they decided to help, with a group that focuses on a different party every weekend. “One of the most difficult things each week is to decide what activity to attend because there’s so much going on in Decatur,” says current group Administrator Jo Caulkins. Founded in January, the group has quickly multiplied its members. Now on Facebook (a super-easy way to manage it, say organizers), they have more than 820 members. Their profile identifies them as “A fun loving group dedicated to the success of Decatur social, sports or arts events.” “I see the benefits of the group as threefold,” says Jo. “There is the obvious economic benefit to the businesses and non-profits that are showcased. 30 | september 2013

“The social networking is a major positive. Crashing gives your regular group an opportunity to break out of a 'rut' to meet new people or make time to re-connect with friends without all of the phone calls and arrangements. The time and place is set for you! “The third benefit is that we are able to showcase many of Decatur's 'hidden gems'. These are lesser known events that feature talent or fun activities but may not have a large advertising budget.” While they originally focused on sporting events and theater productions, the group has expanded and now also includes activities linked to charities. “There are so many worthy causes and so much to do” that they’ve even varied the format a bit, she says. One week, for example, they chose three different activities for group members to attend: Blues in the Park, a Relay for Life fundraiser and Homeward Bound Pet Shelter’s Woofstock.

Turnout is hard to gauge because they don’t require members to wear nametags, many don’t know each other outside of the Facebook group, and often Facebook profiles don’t have pictures. But to encourage socialization and raise awareness, they got a banner from Refreshment Pepsi that trumpets their presence and encourages interested parties to reach out via Facebook or by e-mailing Jo. They’ve also started putting up a tent at events they attend to provide a central gathering place. In fact, at an event at Long Creek Vineyards, a young couple saw the frivolity happening under the tent and came over to check it out. “Her parents are moving here, and they left saying it looks like a group that would be good for them, and for her parents to meet people!” says Jo.

“So far, most events have been free or low cost,” says Jo. “Certain organizations have big events coming up, and we like to make sure we hit at least one of them, but we’re always looking at the affordable aspect, too.” Through it all, they try to keep a full range of events on the docket to keep all interests entertained. They’ve crashed an Oakwood Street Festival, sports events (a Decatur Derby Dames match is on the radar) and of course various theater productions. “Some are spur of the moment; some are dependent on organizations,” says Jo. All ages and stages are welcome, from singles to couples to families. And anyone can get involved—it’s as easy as finding them on Facebook! (Note the group is closed; just ask to be a member and voila!) “The reaction has been great,” says Jo. “People love the name, and they love the idea of meeting new people.” They normally announce crash sites on Tuesdays prior to the event. In the immediate future, crashers have the opportunity to impact Arts in Central Park September 20-22 this year.
