Wild Liz here, one of the new Scovill Zoo penguins. I know I’ve only been here a minute, but man, I’m wild about Decatur, and you should be, too! Believe it or not, I’m a sports fan from way back. (Truth be told, I like Pittsburgh hockey best, but who could blame me?) Failing that, I’m a sucker for college ball of any kind, and you’ve got a doozy right here in Millikin’s bevy of sports—read more on that in this issue.

CONGRATS TO OUR SEPTEMBER WINNER:

Andy Hynds

I also can’t resist a good debate, so you can bet I’ll be high-tailing it to the Oglesby Mansion’s He Said She Said event. Doesn’t hurt that the debate is beer vs. wine either. Flyin’ fish, is there a lot to do here! If you can’t decide, check out THRIVE’s latest regular feature, the Party Crash of the Month. You’ll find great tips on greater events in each issue! Wait a minute, is that smelt I smell? Gotta go; supper’s on. I think I see a keeper’s leg to peck! (We Humboldts are an ornery bunch. See for yourself when we make our debut at Boo at the Zoo!)

SPOTLIGHT

The Stars Are Out at Millikin’s Requarth Observatory

by Joli Hohenstein

Named for accomplished Millikin alum and former Millikin Estate trustee and financial advisor Dr. William H. Requarth, the Observatory opened along with the rest of Leighty-Tabor Building in 2000. It features viewing from the main telescope as well as an observation deck on the fifth floor surrounding the base of the dome. Small windows each year give the public a shot at stargazing, with free Observation Nights hosted since 2007. This year’s fall events will be held every clear Wednesday night from 8 to 10 pm (weather permitting) from September 11 to late October or early November depending on seasonal changes and levels of attendance. Part of the excitement is “the enthusiasm shown by attendees—young and old—and from on and off campus,” Casey says. “Many have never looked through a telescope, so we get some very excited and appreciative folks.”

photo: compliments of Millikin University

Who needs to reach for the stars when you can see them for yourself from Millikin University’s Requarth Observatory? A mere six flights of stairs elevate Decatur to astronomical proportions. Use some of the state’s best astronomy equipment to see Saturn’s rings and beyond, including the main telescope (a 20inch, 300-lb. mirror reflecting behemoth) plus a complement of smaller 8-inch units. In fact, Requarth houses Illinois’ largest publicly available telescope. It’s just one of many benefits the Observatory offers. “The students get the opportunity to interact with and teach science to the public as they become more familiar with the equipment and astronomy concepts,” says Dr. Casey Watson, astrophysicist and assistant professor of physics and astronomy.

And note, Millikin alums in particular get another perk: During Homecoming, they’re invited to a special alums-only stargazing session at the Observatory. This year it’s set for Saturday, October 4. The class of 1988 has its own special viewing during a reunion reception starting at 6:30 p.m., while the rest of the alumni-verse can gaze away from 8:30 to 10 p.m. Public Observation Nights are free, though donations to help with upkeep of the telescopes are appreciated. Says Casey, “We hope you'll join us and see the moon, planets, red giants, binary stars, star clusters and other wonders of the universe.”

THE FOOD DUDE

by T. F. DUDE

He Said Beer, She Said Wine “Emma,” says Gov. Richard J. Oglesby, “Ulysses just called and said it’s my turn to host poker night.”

“If it’s good enough for the monks, then it’s good enough for me,” he says.

“Not until the house gets painted,” says his lovely young wife, Emma Gillett Keays. “Tell him he’ll just have to wait.”

“I guess on this point,” says Emma, “we will just have to disagree.”

“I believe it is poor manners,” he says, “to make a President wait.” They’re sitting in the library of the Oglesby Mansion, the Governor in his favorite chair, a cigar in one hand and a half pint of a domestic beer in the other. Mrs. Oglesby sits on the couch, attending one of their three children. “I’m not sure how you can drink that stuff, dear,” says Emma, “especially before dinner. Don’t you think a glass of wine would taste much better with the roast duck we’re having?” “Nonsense,” the Governor replies gruffly. “With wine, there is only one ingredient to work with, and that’s grapes, but with beer, you have barley, hops, yeast and several other ingredients that can be used to play with flavor and find the perfect complement to any food.” Emma regards him as she reaches for the fan she placed on the side table. “But wine is so much more refined! You certainly can’t have a grand party, invite your guests for dinner, and then serve them courses paired with a beer!” “Maybe you have a point, Emma,” says the Governor, “but in all my travels across the world, it is beer that causes men to gather around the table to discuss world politics, literature and society.” “What about women?” Emma asks. “You can’t suggest women must engage in the same manner as men. We don’t stagger home from the pubs. Rather, we converse in a civilized manner while sipping on red Bordeaux!” She smiles coyly at him, but the Governor is not moved.

Weigh in on the debate at the fourth annual He Said Beer, She Said Wine event at The Decatur Club on Friday, October 18. Reservations are required; please RSVP by October 6. Cost is $75 a person or $600 per table. All proceeds go toward painting and maintenance of the Oglesby Mansion. The night includes a five-course gourmet dinner. Reception (and first course) begins at 6:30 pm on the mezzanine, with Mr. and Mrs. Oglesby there to greet their guests. The other four courses will be served in the ballroom, and each will be paired with a wine, chosen by Kevin Graham, co-owner of The Decanter Fine Wines and Spirits, and a beer, suggested by Charlie McGorray, owner and manager of McGorray’s Golf & Grille. Following every course, Graham and McGorray will have a “friendly” debate on why they’ve chosen each wine and beer as a complement to the food. Guests will be able to cast a vote for their preferred pairing: beer or wine. Votes will be tallied, and we’ll find out if it’s Emma’s grapes that have won you over for a third time or the Governor’s barley.

Get There He Said Beer, She Said Wine October 18, RSVP (required) by October 6 $75 per person, $600/table of 8 The Decatur Club, 158 W. I usually leave the food dude-ing to the professional food dude, so I'll spare you the full review, but I found a wonderful surprise at the new Oakwood morning food place, the Blue Spoon. Everything I tasted exceeded my expectations, but I never thought I'd see "Morning Cookies" on the clever little menu. I think you can get the gist from the menu description: After years of development, the perfect Morning Cookie has arrived. It has milk chocolate chips, oatmeal, pecans and the perfect amount of everyone's favorite meat candy, bacon. s is thi , G e. OMacon ooki b ac on

ART SPEAK

by Jerry Johnson

photos submitted by the DAAC

Let Your Muse Express Your Artistic Side People create art for different reasons. They create to express thoughts and feelings that cannot be expressed through a simple explanation, in a way that can be experienced by other people. Those thoughts and feelings are inspired by many things. We’re all inspired by something that fascinates us. We all have our “muse.” How we express it takes many different forms, from theatrical performance to jewelry to painting. Matthew Dearing from Springfield is fascinated by science and has been inspired to direct a series of theatrical productions that explore different scientific fields. This month Matthew’s theatrical company, Dynamic Patterns Theatre, will present the first in his Science at the Theatre series, a show called QED: A Play. It’s a touching, whimsical, thought-provoking play that provides a peek into the mind of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman, an eccentric genius who was often thinking and clowning at the same time. “My academic background is in physics, so I am personally excited to merge my theatre and science interests into a new cultural event...,” says Matthew. You can see QED: A Play on October 4 and 5 at 8 pm on the third floor of the Madden Arts Center. General admission tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at the Decatur Area Arts Council, 423-3189.

Likewise, my daughter-in-law, Christy Campbell, has always loved the wonders of nature and the great outdoors. Though she worked toward a master’s degree in jewelry design, she says, “If I hadn’t been so consumed with art at an early age, it would have been a biology thesis in front of me now.” The thesis she ultimately presented took the form of a series of fascinating, custom-made jewelry pieces inspired by insects and sea creatures. Two are pictured here. I have always been a history buff. If I hadn’t studied art, I would likely have been a history teacher. That probably explains why one of the few pieces of art hanging in my house that I created is a silkscreen print of Chief Joseph, the famed leader of the Nez Perce Indian tribe. Also, when I had the good fortune to paint a mural on a downtown Decatur building, I chose as my subject Commodore Stephen Decatur, another historic, noble, courageous, yet tragic American hero. We all have something or someone that inspires us. Though we may not all think of ourselves as artists, we’re all capable of expressing ourselves in a way that others may call artistic. Let your muse inspire you. You may surprise yourself when you create something you can share proudly with the world.

Jerry Johnson is the Executive Director of the Decatur Area Arts Council and may be spotted pretty much anywhere art is happening. 12 | october 2013

Costume Corner

Although I’m not a huge fan of fall or winter, I do LOVE Halloween! I’m always looking for great costume ideas and ran across this great At-At getup for dogs. I feel a little bad dressing my dogs up, though, so I thought I’d try this out on my cat. She is a jerk and I figure Karma is a real thing. What seemed like a great idea turned out to be a little underwhelming. Check out my Halloween Pinterest Fail.

STAR WARS AT-AT WALKER

NAILED IT Clearly, there's no way my cat will wear a costume. Not even with catnip. She will, however, sit in a box.

By Wild Liz

Well, hellooo there, Decatur peeps! My name’s Liz, but you can call me Wild Liz— most people do. (And yes, for the record, chicks, or in this case penguins, wear tuxedos, too.)

M.K., Ella, two peeps we’ve yet to meet, and yours truly. We’re all Humboldt penguins, named for the ocean current along the South American coastline, which keeps the water there just exploding with nutrients. (I mean, 1/5 of the fish eaten in the world comes from there!)

Holy mackerel, are my colony and I excited to hit the Soy City! And who wouldn’t be, But things aren’t as great as they used to with the chill digs Scovill Zoo has set up be, at least for my penguin pals. See, you humans discovered that our guano (you for us! know, our scat?) makes great fertilizer Knowing our South American roots (we (duh). And that’s fine for you, except that all hail from Peru or Chile, via various zoos we nest in it (hey, to each our own). So in locales like Wichita, Philadelphia, Santa when you load it on your ships and take Barbara, Seattle and St. Louis), they’re it away, our babies got no place to go. keeping our water at a perfect 40° to 60°F. Since we’re South American, John Henry, Royce, Chief, Huffy, Bogey, we’re also temperate. So we like relatively

warmer weather than our peers, which is why Scovill Zoo will keep our water temperature moderated, even heating it in the winter and cooling it in the summer so we can still come out and swim. Like most penguins, we love to swim and eat—capelin, trout and smelt especially. (For little guys, we eat a lot—a pound of fish a day!) And like most penguins, we’re black and white—black heads and bodies and white bellies with some sassy speckling and a cool black band across our chests. Plus, we have something else other penguins don’t: pink patches on our faces and feet! It’s not feathers; it’s skin, and it’s part of that whole temperate thing we’ve got going on—that bare skin keeps us cool in warmer weather. We can even blush! To keep from overheating (it gets up to 108°F where we’re from), our feet, face and wings can flush pink. Or it could be we’re excited to see you! continued on page 16

And see us you will, from three different vantage points! There’s a dome that lets you pop up in the middle of our house, a glass wall for underwater viewing and a deck with a glass door for a bird’s eye view. They’ve built our new habitat to look just like our native one, with craggy rock formations that mimic the ones on our coasts and a derrick and pilings like the ones by the shipyards. We’ve got a sweet pool to swim in, those rocks to play on, and misters and fans to keep us cool. An equally cool ozone generator, sand filter and refiltering system keep our water clean and clear. I hear they’ve set up not one, but two nesting areas (one indoor, one out—you’ve heard we nest in our poo?). You’ll see some of us at Boo at the Zoo, and the rest of my peeps will join yours for the Zoo’s spring grand opening. (In summer we molt—you know, lose feathers, stop eating, generally get stressed out—and we’re waiting until that’s over so we’re sure to be at our best for you.) So come bring your wild things to see ours—we can’t wait to meetcha!

Wild Liz is a Humboldt penguin, new to Decatur and Scovill Zoo. She enjoys a good perfectly chilled smelt, long walks on short legs and twilight swims with her soon-to-be mate. Editor’s Note: Scovill Zoo’s Boo at the Zoo runs October 18-20 and 25-31, 5:30-8 pm weeknights and 3-8 pm weekends.

If you’ve put off attending any Millikin Big Blue athletic events this year or if you’ve just never tried out the sports viewing opportunities the Decatur university offers, now is the time to get interested. Millikin fall sports are in full swing, and the entertainment value is off the charts. Just in October, the Big Blue will feature 19 different chances to see the teams on campus. Between Homecoming (Saturday, October 5) to the Linda Slagell Classic volleyball tournament (October 25-26), men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s cross country and women’s tennis, all will be featured in home matches or games. You can now even buy a yearly pass that will get you into football, volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball, all for one low price. “There are a lot of exciting things going on here athletically,” said Director of Athletics Craig White. “We are always improving our facilities and ability to compete in the CCIW (Collegiate Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), so allowing our fans and customers a chance to pay one price to get into all sports seemed a logical thing to do.” With single game tickets sold at $6 for adults and $4 for seniors (60 and up), an all-sports pass for $65 and $45 respectively is a bargain. Big events are especially heavy in October.

Continued from page 28 Homecoming is up first, with the Big Blue taking on arch-rival Illinois Wesleyan on the football field the first Saturday of the month.

Kiick has been the Big Blue coach since 2001 and entered the season with a 287160 mark. She looks forward to the Pink Event, in its fourth year, each season.

“Homecoming is just a lot of fun for everyone around campus,” head football coach Patrick Etherton said. “It’s a chance for players to meet alums, and for the alums, they get to see the players and what we are doing as a program for maybe the only time all year.

“Not only do we get to honor Coach Slagell for all she did the program,” Kiick said, “we get to raise awareness for those who have fought, will fight and are fighting the battle against cancer.”

“We get to play our rival, and everyone is especially jacked up for it. It’s such a great weekend.” The Big Blue, featuring a high-powered offense and a young, athletic defense, also play Augustana at home on the 19th.

In addition to the Big Blue all-sports pass, Millikin also offers passes to specific sports. Football and volleyball passes cost $25 for adults and $15 for seniors, and basketball passes are $40 and $30, respectively.

“It’s a terrific way to honor Coach Slagell,” said current volleyball head coach Debbie Kiick. “She’s the winningest volleyball coach in Millikin history, and she’s also a survivor, which makes it a truly special event.”

If you need another reason to plunge into Big Blue athletics, teams are filled with local athletes. St. Teresa graduate Sean Dunning leads the offense at running back for the football team. Maroa-Forsyth grad Wes Beach leads the defense. Mount Zion graduate Jade Becker plays volleyball. St. Teresa graduate Gabbi Scheuerman is the top golfer on the women’s team. Timothee McElroy and Patrick Tharp, both Mount Zion grads, are men’s cross country runners. MacArthur graduate Sarah Bradley, Maroa-Forsyth’s Ashley Livingood and Meridian’s Rachel Sapp all run for the Big Blue women’s cross country team. St. Teresa’s Connor Smith, Warrensburg-Latham’s Tucker Mathiesen and Mount Zion’s Kyle Kovacs all play soccer for Millikin.

The Slagell Classic, held October 25 and 26, features the Big Blue against Albion College, Loras College, the University of Dubuque and Transylvania University.

Millikin volleyball hosts its most anticipated tournament of the year in October, presenting the Linda Slagell Classic late in the month. Slagell was the Big Blue head coach for 14 years, compiling a 327-190 record, including four CCIW titles, in that span. It’s also a Pink Event, raising awareness for breast cancer.

“Transylvania is having a really nice season, and the competition will be great from everyone,” Kiick said. “There should be some really great volleyball played.” 30 | october 2013
