A look back at last month’s happenings
The Real Men Wear Pink Campaign was in full effect last month as every weekend was painted pink through various local sporting events. Proceeds from the campaign go toward community breast cancer awareness, prevention and treatment.

#myway United Way of Decatur & Mid-Illinois kicked off a social media campaign October 10th at the Beach House. Supporting just became easier; simply text UNITED to 501501 to make a $10 donation. Paying It Forward
Dale's Southlake Pharmacy hosted an open house October 10-12. The first 100 patrons who spent $20 received a $2 bill to pay forward to another locally owned business. There was such a warm response to the notion that Dale's plans to run the program again this December.
WSOY Community Food Drive Volunteers and donors alike came out in droves on October 4 to support the 12th annual food drive. By the end of the 12-hour radio marathon, 820,000 lbs. of food were collected, which exceeded the goal by 70,000 lbs! Each year the food drive is held at Kroger on Route 36, near Mt. Zion.

Millikin alumni from all over the U.S. returned to Decatur the first weekend in October to celebrate Homecoming with their alma mater. Over the course of three days, alumni were engaged in a number of activities and events including Career Connection presentations, all-alumni receptions, tours of campus, sorority/fraternity reunions, athletic events, music performances and specific class year reunions. Restored Pedal Tractors Roll On Think the only workshop working overtime this time of year is up north? Think again! It’s out east, back in Richard Lieth’s Mt. Zion garage. The former farm boy and retired Caterpillar employee stays close to his roots with a hobby that results in great gifts for all: pedal tractor restoration. Many of us recall the glory days of rolling down the sidewalk, legs pumping, hair flying as we guided our metal steed to adventures of all walks (or as far as the next driveway in mom terms). Richard helps bring those memories back to life. It’s a hobby he picked up a couple decades ago and one that’s resulted not only in personal satisfaction but an impressive collection as well. “I tore down a barn that had a pedal tractor in it and decided to fix it up. It kind of took off from there and now I probably have between 90 and 100 of them,” he says. His skills and collection span all brands, from John Deere, International and Case to Allis-Chalmers, Oliver, Ford and Minneapolis-Moline. He’s even gotten into accessories here and there. “I have a few implements I’ve customized, and I built a wheat drill one winter, just to see if I could,” he laughs. “I built eight of them and then sold them.” Last year he built a John Deere pull-type plow by measuring the full-size version and scaling it down. He calls them “pretty accurate” at 98-99% of the original. Time takes on little meaning here—Richard estimates he put 120 hours or so into the plow. To restore a whole pedal tractor? He puts that at about a week, not working consecutively of course. He does it for the love and the passion, so whatever he puts into it he’s sure to get out

of it. “I just enjoy it. You have to like it and enjoy it to do it.” Born and raised on a farm south of Effingham, he didn’t particularly learn the skills of restoration, but through farm life, work at Caterpillar and now helping out a contractor friend part time, he’s acquired more than a fair range of abilities. “I’m kind of a jack of all trades, master of none,” he laughs. Selling himself short to be sure, as restoration like this takes not just paint but parts, sandblasting, mechanical work and more. His garage holds a host of tools from a metal brake and a lathe to welders. From the moment he sees one, he knows what it takes to restore it. That’s why he wants an inperson review before he’ll agree to quote or work on a piece. “When the full-size tractors made a body style change or an engineering change, the pedal tractors did the same thing,” he said. “Later on they changed every three to four years when they had longer production runs.” Between all the variations and all the wear and tear and love pedal tractors endure, that can mean a lot of work. But for Richard and his customers, it’s all worthwhile: “Most people restore because they’re restoring memories from their childhood.”

Doherty's Pub and Pins: roasted red pepper with Smoked Gouda

Soup Showdown Now that summer’s over and the weather’s cooling down, this Dude looks forward to having one food in particular: soup! Yeah, I know, you’re saying, “FD, it doesn’t have to be cool out just to eat soup!” Well, for me it’s just so much more satisfying when there’s a chill in the air and you sit down to a hearty bowl. The first place I went was Doherty’s Pub and Pins to try the roasted red pepper with smoked Gouda. This stuff is awesome! It’s got a tomato base, which gives you that warm and cozy snow day kind of feeling. But it ramps up the flavor with great smoked Gouda and just enough roasted red pepper flavor to let you know it’s there but not overpower the whole soup. It’s great by itself, but I decided to make a nice meal out of it with half of their Irish Pub Club, which is a great turkey salad sandwich on a hoagie roll. It was a great contrast to the soup and really complemented it well! Next on my list was Paco’s Sol Bistro for the white chicken chili. If you’ve never tried white chicken chili, do yourself a favor and try Paco’s. You’ll never want any other kind out there. It’s got nice chunks of all white meat chicken, white beans, and a great blend of chilies and spices. Oh, and don’t worry that it may be too spicy for you. It’s got a nice flavor that isn’t too spicy, so anyone can enjoy it! A bowl of it makes a great, filling meal. Or get a cup of it as a side to go along with one of Paco’s outstanding dishes like the chipotle salad or the chicken meatloaf.
The last place I checked out was the Beach House. What’s great about this place is that the soup selection changes daily, so you can always expect something different when you stop by. The night I went, I tried the chicken fajita soup. Holy cow, was it good! It was like a cross between a soup and chili, with almost a gumbo-like consistency. It was full of great shredded chicken and hearty beans, with a good amount of kick to it. I’ve had more than a few “fajita” soups in my time, but this is the one that tastes like it was right off the grill! It came garnished with some crisp homemade tortilla chips for texture, and they really made the dish. It made a great side to my awesome Beach Melt. Now after all of that praise, you may be wondering which one of these tasty treats I think is the best. Well, I’d love to tell you all just that except that I can’t decide! With all these options and all the variety, can you blame me? They’re all so good that you’ll just have to head out and try them all for yourselves!

How many times have you showed up for a potluck at work and realized there aren't any dishes that are gluten free? If you're like me, you always think about trying a recipe that your gluten sensitive friends at work can enjoy, but it's tough to be 100% sure you're excluding all gluten and you want to get it right! I decided enough is enough and went to Good Naber to find a workable solution. My go-to for potlucks has always been pie, but the crust is a real challenge with gluten-free baking. Thankful for the Arts
October is National Arts & Humanities Month. It’s designed to encourage us to explore how the arts and humanities enrich our lives and to live a life of active appreciation and participation in the arts and humanities. November is the month when we recognize the things we are thankful for. I’d like to thank the many people who make the arts an important part of our community. Thank you to the parents who introduce their children to the world of the arts. The experiences you share in a theatre, at a museum or a concert hall will connect you in special ways. These experiences are also the seeds of a richer, more fulfilling life for your kids. Thank you to the teachers who share their artistic gifts and passion, inspiring and encouraging students to explore what they too are capable of creating. Sharing what you know and love with the next generation is one of the greatest joys of being an artist. Thank you to everyone who attends an arts event and supports those who have taken the risky step of offering their art to the community. The arts are about sharing your talent and ideas, but it’s the sharing that is the scariest part. Painters, musicians, actors and writers ultimately must be prepared to hear the criticism along with the praise, but it’s always comforting to see a friendly face in the crowd. Thank you to the generous individuals, businesses and organizations who provide financial support and volunteer hours to the arts in Decatur. Your generosity creates a thriving community that keeps us engaged and makes us proud of where we live. Finally, I’d like to thank all the creative people in our community. They offer us art that reflects the stories, the songs, the dances, the images, the shapes of our city. I’ve heard it said that the arts scene in a community is like a local farmer’s market, filled with products that grew organically

The holidays in Decatur kick off early with a host of fabulously festive events you won’t want to miss. Lest you overlook, let us review:
Lighted Nighttime Christmas Parade
For more than 60 years, the Decatur Jaycees have presented the community with a festive moving celebration of the holidays, and this year’s iteration, “All I Want for Christmas,” is poised to light up the night downtown on November 23. As many as 60 entries entertain young and old, and typically at least half of them are floats, says Jaycees Administrative Vice President and Parade Chairman Tanya

Haubner. “It’s the sixth year of the lighted parade, and we’re so happy to still do this for the community.” When this year’s parade steps off shortly after the 5:30 pm trophies and awards, expect a host of floats set to lights and music with coordinated walkers, the Toys for Tots wagon accepting toy donations and new this year, the Sheriff’s office with a fleet of antique police cars. Kids should have their letters for Santa at the ready, too, as local letter carriers will be walking the route, ready to post them back to Santa at the North Pole. The parade route runs north up 51 (Franklin Street), west across North Street and back south on 51 (Main Street). Find your favorite spot to watch, or consider volunteering—they’re always looking for people to help with lineup and walkers to hand out candy!

Heritage & Holly Tour
Decatur’s Captains of Industry will come roaring back to life as historical gems from the 1800s and 1900s open their doors for the 2013 Heritage & Holly Tour, November 29 and 30 (with a candlelight tour available on the first night). Sponsored by NWRAPS (Near West Restoration and Preservation Society), this year’s version features homes owned by major industrial leaders as well as displays of manufacturing memorabilia and more. Starting at Central Christian Church, tour-goers will be treated to live music and sweet treats along the way, with the option of traveling by the convenient hop-on-hop-off trolley service or making their own way. “It’s always fun to ride the trolley—it adds to the atmosphere,” says NWRAPS President Donna Williams.
Some of the 10 stops include the Mueller Museum, Decatur manufacturing museum the Culver House, the Millikin Homestead and a Civil War-era home on Edward Street. “We’ll have special music at different stops and a few other surprises,” says Donna. On William Street, the Gebhart House, formerly owned by the venerable downtown Decatur department store proprietor, will highlight a special trend of the time, “The Captain’s Wife Goes Shopping.” With a department store windows theme, it will hearken to the excitement of the old Marshall Fieldsstyle windows the industry wives would see while Christmas shopping. Also not to miss on the roster: #4 Millikin Place, which was designed and built for the Muellers by Marion Mahony, the first woman registered as an architect in the state of Illinois. This year’s downtown holiday shopping extravaganza, set for Wednesday, December 4, is facilitated by the newly formed dTown CoOp, a group of downtown merchants who came together to maintain traditions and move downtown retail forward.

“The Christmas Walk is one of the most time-honored Decatur traditions,” says CoOp member Stephanie Irby of Events Plus. “It’s one of the many times a year you’re proud to be from Decatur.” Shoppers this year can expect the usual festive mix of offerings, from carolers and carriage rides to treats, warm drinks and festive decorations and music. Hours for the 2013 Walk are 4:30 to 8 pm, and a list of participating merchants will be available in November.

4 Ways to Be a Great Patron Making Dining Out Fun No Matter How Big Your Party Is

Like when your favorite restaurant gets new wines and lets you do a mini-tasting of them all. Or when a server at a new restaurant remembers not just your name but your order, on only your second trip back. We all know it’s not us versus them, though. Dining out is a team project. Our group can at times be up to 14 people, and we try to make it as simple and enjoyable as possible for everyone. Here are some ways you can be an awesome patron... If you know the number in your group, always make a reservation. This helps keep the flow of customers at a pace the restaurant can accommodate, and you won’t have a long wait. Always be on time for the reservation. Reservations are set so that all patrons will have ample time to enjoy their dinner and have time for conversation. If you aren’t going to be able to keep your reservation or your number of guests has changed, always call to let them know about the changes. Always be aware of your wait staff. They have more than your table to serve and will give you the time you need, but others also need their attention. Even if you’re in the middle of a conversation, politely stop and let the wait staff take your drink and/or dinner order. Usually the allotted time is one and a half to two hours. Try not to stay past that time because often others are waiting to be seated. A good indication is that other customers are standing around and seem to be looking in the direction of the tables. You may also ask your waiter if there are any other reservations. If not, then your party will probably be welcome to stay longer if you desire.
