As I watched the breakfast options in and around Decatur explode, my mission was clear: Grab my bacon and take over an issue. I chose January because who doesn’t like warm comfort food and full bellies in Arctic cold? Dispatching our shorty of an editor was easy (I tucked her in my pocket with a glazed donut to entertain her). The publisher was more challenging, but one hint of a new beer candied bacon specialist on the south side of town, and she was gone. Freedom (and bacon) are mine! I quickly tapped a new friend for a review of our fair town’s breakfast bonanza. New, old and nouveau, the bacon is sizzling, crepes are creping (or whatever they do) and the flapjacks are flipping. There’s a delish option for everyone. Not to be forgotten: the bevy of breakfast favorites burgeoning in small towns all around us. My next mark: the Spotlight, which I took for my very own with a biscuits and gravy throwdown. No you’re not dreaming; I’ve gorged myself to your benefit, with a review of Decatur’s finest favorite comfort food (burp). When the publisher did sneak back, I threw her a bone and told her about the bacon and eggs dog treats at Millie and Bo's Barkery. With three canine kiddos at home it was a fool-proof distraction. The pièce de résistance: Much to my delight, beer candied bacon is a real thing! I made the supreme sacrifice of trying it for you, and even sharing my newfound skills—check out my visual guide! Christmas Walk An unseasonably warm night brought out community members in droves on December 4 for the Destination Downtown Christmas Walk. Men, women, children and even dancing elves filled the sidewalks popping in and out of each storefront with ease. Shoppers could make their way toward Millikin and end the night at Wildflour Artisan Bakery and the Root Cellar with hand-made baked goods and unique gifts.

Chamber Breakfast
Three teams of Decatur Leadership Institute members presented at the December 4 Chamber of Commerce Breakfast at the Decatur Club. The DLI teams were charged with creating a social media presence for the City of Decatur, an ilovedecatur.com website and videos to promote Decatur Park District amenities. The Dance Centre Students from The Dance Centre graced the stage at the Masonic Temple for their annual Christmas recital to benefit the Salvation Army tree on Saturday, December 7. The dance program featured Santa Claus reading from 'Twas the Night Before Christmas and dancers of all ages performing to traditional and contemporary Christmas tunes.
Giving Circle On December 2, Giving Tuesday, a grant reception was held at Baby TALK Offices on Lake Shore Drive to present Baby TALK with a check for local programming. Baby TALK was chosen by The Young Philanthropist Giving Circle to receive the funding for their efforts with children aged birth to 3 years old and their families.

Biscuits & Gravy Throwdown: Food Dude Gets Real I never really thought about what qualified a good order of biscuits and gravy until I ventured around town (I guess even I can be accused of bein’ a creature of habit) to find who serves some of the best of one of my favorite breakfast options. I visited eight local hot spots (ha) and of those, I picked my five faves. One of my first stops was Coney McKane’s American Eatery. What’s distinguishing about their biscuits & gravy is the sausage—it’s spicy. Personally, I like my sausage to carry as much flavor as my gravy, so for me this was a bonus. The menu advertises it as an original “from the farm” recipe, and at $3.29 it’s a bargain. What’s great about visiting local restaurants is that you’ll get that sense of homemade or “made from scratch” taste. Since it’s across the street, I also visited The Downtown Café. For me, the biscuits won me over. They’re light and fluffy, not weighed down with too much flour. They were just the right size—not too thin or too thick—so they weren’t drowning in gravy. The taste is mild but flavorful. The sausage is more crumbled than it is bombarded with big chunks, and for the price (just $2.75), I think it would appease even the toughest breakfast critic’s palate. After makin’ my way across town, I grabbed a stool at the Four Star Family Restaurant in Mt. Zion (formerly known as the All Star Diner), and it was like love at first taste. Sometimes the mornings are too early for me to wallow in so much spicy goodness, but their biscuits & gravy helped me make an exception. With Coney McKane’s, you got the sense the wallop was in the sausage, but here, I really tasted the spice throughout the gravy. The gravy is a bit darker in color, too, which lets you know the flavor of the browned sausage really sunk into it. I liked that the sausage isn’t just an afterthought, either. Sometimes it can exist in the gravy like shattered pieces of iceberg in the ocean, never really presenting much of an impact.
But you won’t have that problem if you come here for breakfast, and you’ll only drop $2.99. Another great spot is Jan’s East End Grill, and the price is right at $2.99. You’ll get generously-sized pieces of sausage. They’ve chosen to go light on the pepper, so the gravy and sausage contain just the minimum amount of seasoning. The gravy is a bit thinner, so you really get a taste of the flour and milk, just like homemade. The final gravy boat dock was The Main Hangar. It’s the priciest of the options (a still reasonable $4.29) but well worth it. It tastes more like your typical restaurant biscuits & gravy. Well-seasoned gravy, and the biscuits have a nice consistency, not cakey. The gravy is peppery but not spicy: a step above mild. The sausage isn't too big, but it's not too small, either. And it's not under- or overseasoned. It was deliciously perfect, with all three elements harmonizing wonderfully. Because of the holidays, I feel generous, so I’m torn between two (who only wants to eat one place for breakfast anyway?). My favorites *drum roll, please* would have to be the biscuits & gravy at The Main Hangar or Four Star Family Restaurant. It’s a matter of personal taste, but those two places offer the kinda taste that would get me to come back for more. PS: I do anticipate that the day the Blue Spoon comes out with biscuits & gravy on the menu (I’m salivating already at the thought of the gravy alone), I will be one of the first in line to try it!

Art Is the Bacon of My World This issue of Thrive is dedicated to breakfast. The word “breakfast” literally refers to breaking the fasting period of the prior night. But we all know that breakfast is about more than just filling our empty bellies after a long night’s sleep. It helps us wake up, gives us time to think about the day before us and hopefully gives us new perspective on what is facing us in the new day ahead. Bacon certainly seems to make everything a little better. Since this column is about art, I would contend that, at least for me, art is the bacon of life. Like the aroma of fresh cooked bacon, seeing a photo of a beautiful sunset hanging in your den, hearing a touching song on the car radio or watching an inspiring play at a theatre can help you put life or events in perspective, even if you don’t know how. Engaging in arts activities, like playing music, painting, acting or writing a poem, awakens that part of your brain that may otherwise spend time asleep. Doing new things, creative things, often breaks down the barriers of boredom and fear and inspires you to explore even more new and interesting experiences. The arts are all about new perspectives, new ideas and risk-taking.
Another group helping to create something extraordinary is Millikin University’s New Musicals Workshop. Each January, Millikin’s Department of Theatre and Dance offers students and faculty the opportunity to work with professional writing teams as they develop a new musical intended for commercial production. The students get a firsthand look into the process of developing, writing, re-writing and rehearsing a new musical that might be Broadway bound. This year, the project is BASTARD JONES: A Rock Musical, based on Henry Fielding's TOM JONES. The public is invited to a staged reading of the show on Saturday, January 19, at 6 pm in Kaeuper Hall at Millikin. There will even be a talk-back with the creative team after the performance. Like eating a good breakfast, experiencing art prepares you to take on the world. It opens your eyes to your potential. That’s why everything is better with bacon...and art. Many people in our community have “smelled the bacon” and are out exploring their potential and creating new works of art. A couple of examples this January, the month of new beginnings, include the following: Students in and around Macon County will have their artwork on display throughout the month of January in the Anne Lloyd Gallery at the Decatur Area Arts Council as part of the Young Artists’ Showcase. Coordinated by Gallery 510, this annual exhibit offers approximately 100 5th through 8th grade students the opportunity to show their work in a professional gallery. Put aside your notions of children’s art and prepare to be amazed when you visit the Young Artists’ Showcase. Jerry Johnson is the Executive Director of the Decatur Area Arts Council and may be spotted pretty much anywhere art is happening. 10 | January 2014

Although the Food Dude worked to completely derail this issue all month, I managed to get a great lead on gourmet breakfast treats for my three mutts at home. When I try out the Beer Candied Bacon recipe (check out page 28 for all the details), I expect to see all three eager noses in the air sniffing in the intoxicating beer glaze and premium bacon smells. I don't think I can handle the guilt of putting them through that and not letting them have a taste. But don't you worry, they will NOT eat my bacon. I will have plenty of these bacon and egg flavored Gourmutt pet treats on hand as a distraction so we can all get along. By the way, did you notice they are egg and pig shapes? Best pet owner ever — check!

Fortunately, Decatur has an array of delectable restaurants serving up your morning favorites. Some dish it out during typical breakfast hours, and others offer a tasty breakfast for dinner. A few have called Decatur home for a decade or more, and one is finding success after being opened only a few short months. All agree: Decatur loves breakfast! For three years, McGorray’s Golf and Grille has been a popular north end spot for Sunday Brunch, which is served from 10 am to 3 pm. Offered are a fun, golfthemed environment and scrumptious favorites, which include a large assortment of omelets, tasty flatbreads and breakfast sandwiches. McGorray’s credits their success to great food that is reasonably priced. Where else can you get a gourmet omelet for $7.49? 12 | January 2014
Open since mid-September, the Blue Spoon was conceived by owner Donovan Marschner, who moved to the area in 2000 to attend Millikin University…and never left! He recognized the great need for a breakfast/brunch spot on the west end, so he opened the Blue Spoon. A real hit has been the Blue Spoon Shoe, which is a yummy conglomeration of toast, gravy, eggs, and meat if requested. Donovan attributes the popularity to the food being made on site. Even the gravy and fruit spreads are made in house! Located in the same spot for 11 years, the Downtown Café is still going strong and dishing up favorites! Residents love the downtown location and that the café is consistent: always great food and excellent service. Top requests include the Working Man’s Breakfast, which consists of two eggs, any way, with meat, hash browns and toast. Of course, their pancakes are also sure to be a hit.

A Guide to making

When I sent the Publisher on a wild goose chase to find a "Beer Candied Bacon specialist," I hadn't even dreamed bacon candy might really exist. Where would my mind have come up with the concept, though? The universe, man. The universe. I was listening to the vibes, and people are out there making this stuff! When Kat came back empty handed as far as the "specialist" goes, but with recipe in hand, I heard my calling. A batch of Beer Candied Bacon would be mine! Here's how I whipped up my batch of pure awesome. 1. Start with great bacon. I picked up a half pound from Jeffrey's Meat Market (135 S. Oakland Ave., Decatur). Nothing fancy, but thick cut is a MUST. Thin = burnt candy. Also, if you only get a half pound, you'll regret not getting more. I speak from experience here, folks!

2. Mix your glaze. For one pound of bacon use
• 1/2 cup brown sugar • 1/4 cup beer
Combine the sugar and beer in a bowl and whisk the heck out of it. You'll be amazed at how great just the glaze smells.
Anything but an IPA should work for this recipe. I went with a homebrewed American brown ale that was awesome. Thanks, Rob Zimmerman!
3. Preheat the oven. Bring your oven up to 400˚F.
4. Glaze the bacon. Glaze both sides and place on a wire rack. Feel free to overlap if needed. It's also important to place the rack on a baking pan that's lined with aluminum foil because you won't want doing dishes to get in the way of eating bacon. As you can see to the left, I cut the bacon into half thinking it would be easier to share. You can skip that step, though; you won't want to share anyway.
6. Eat bacon candy. 5. Bake and re-glaze. Place your bacon in the 400˚F oven and set your timer of choice. I marked my beer bottle, but you may want to be more scientific and try to hit 10 minutes right on the dot. At 10-minute intervals, remove, glaze both sides, and bake again. My batch went through only 2 intervals and transformed into pure awesome! Next time around I plan to shoot for 4 shorter intervals in hopes of an even thicker candy coating.
To dress the bacon up even more, dredge it in brown sugar while still a bit warm; then brush off the excess to leave a nice texture.
