420 of Decatur’s bravest took to the chilly waters at the Lake Decatur Polar Plunge. Chilly? Try arctic-icy, colder-than-anyoneshould-ever-leap-into COLD. With a wintery mix falling and temps near freezing, this year’s Polar Plunge was easily one of the coldest Decatur has seen. But that didn’t stop this year’s “plungers” from raising nearly $80,000 for Illinois Special Olympic athletes, surpassing their goal freezing happily all the way. Thrive was on hand for the second year in a row to award trophies to the craziest, most original team and individual costumes. It’s all about enthusiasm, and the folks listed to the right had it! --KS

Bowl for Kids Sake

(March 11, 12, 13) “This was our most successful Bowl For Kids Sake ever,” declared Zach Shields, community partnership coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Macon County. For the third year in a row, this annual fundraiser brought in north of $100,000 thanks to 136 teams (up from last year’s 82) and more than $44,000 in sponsor donations. “The bowlers have spoken,” says Shields, “and as always, we are very, very appreciative.”

Knit Night You can hear the cheeriness of the group as soon as you step off the elevator! Lots of laughter shared at this weekly (every Tuesday) gathering at the Decatur Area Arts Council. Open to any and all knitters, it’s a supportive space to explore your craft!

Mardi Gras: Downtown (Saturday, Feb 26th) Downtown Decatur once again celebrated Mardi Gras with a night of N’awlins inspired food and fun courtesy of eleven participating restaurants and bars (presented as a fundraiser for Special Olympics by the Greater Decatur Chamber of Commerce). Guess what? The Decatur Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) has declared April Discover Decatur-Forsyth Month, and we are pumped! For just under two years, we’ve been THRIVE-ing to get the word out about how great our towns are, and we’re SO excited that the CVB and friends are making a big push to shout the message! “This is a great chance to raise the community’s and the area’s awareness of everything we have to offer,” says Executive Director Jeff Hendricks. “There’s so much to see and do here.” Its true! There IS a heck of a lot to do here. You can climb a wall, feed a goat, ride a carousel, take the kids for free golf, tour seven museums or 10 art galleries, sample herbal tea, visit a winery, explore a historic home, go to a concert, watch a play, catch a fish, or run a race. Did you know we have more Lincoln statues than any other city in the nation? And 15 Lincoln sites to boot? But don’t believe us. During April the CVB has partnered with the Heritage Network, the City of Decatur, the Village of Forsyth, the Decatur Public School District and the Maroa-Forsyth School District to pass the word via TV, newspaper, radio, magazines, social media and the web. And Stephen Decatur himself will be helping tell the world all about it.

“April is perfect timing with the kickoff of tourist season, plus all of the conventions and sporting events coming to town,” says Jeff. “If you can’t be a tour guide, just send them to the Convention & Visitors Bureau when they ask for something to do.” The campaign promotes Decatur’s many entertainment draws, including museums, parks and recreation, art galleries, historic homes, Lincoln sites, live theaters and attractions. Watch for it, and we bet you’ll find out something new!

Speaking of things to do . . . April brings one of this wino, er writer’s favorite events. Corks and Forks, the Decatur Area Arts Council’s annual wine and cheese tasting event, is set for April 28 at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel. It’s your chance to try hundreds of different reds, whites and rosés from all over the world, paired with the Decatur-area culinary world’s finest flavors. In between samples, pop into the silent auction to pick up a bauble or two, a vacation getaway or some local art, and pause to enjoy the night’s musical entertainment. Fabulous!

THE FOOD DUDE

After a three-year hiatus, Tom’s Bar and Grill (1856 North Main Street) has re-opened its doors. Adding historic color to Decatur, the Grill originally opened in 1935 (1935!) and was in business all the way to 2007 (2007!). That’s a mighty long time, folks. It officially re-opened back in November (under the new management of Deon and Lauralee Jones), though the Chamber of Commerce just made it official with a ribbon cutting ceremony March 17th.

choose-from menus found in many restaurants. Here the course selection consists of steak, chicken, pork, and fish, all classically prepared. You can’t go wrong with any of them.

The restaurant hasn’t lost its original flavor, referring both to the food and atmosphere (aside from the lounge now being smoke free, of course). Tom’s still offers the same tasty, quintessential Midwestern menu of meat and potatoes that has kept it’s business flowing over the past 75 years. And true to its slogan “Atmosphere is Everything” - the Grill does well in accommodating Decatur diners with three separate dining areas. Of course, your Food Dude can’t help but be partial to the hip, dimly lit lounge with jazzy music and private booths. It’s the way I roll.

Also worth mentioning is Tom’s homemade garlic dressing, which was so good I ate it not only with my salad but on portions of the meal as well. The garlic in no way overpowers the flavor, hitting just the right note of taste.

Those familiar with Tom’s may notice something missing from the pre-meal table: the relish tray. Fear not, it’s now an official appetizer. As for the rest of the menu, items are limited; but that’s a plus. So refreshing from the usual seven-pages-to-

As for sides, options were pretty much any cooking-style of potatoes you can think of! Of the offerings, I highly recommend the twicebaked with the side of cheese sauce. Veeeeeery tasty!

Overall, Tom’s new owners have done a wonderful job maintaining the previously loved feel of this Decatur mainstay, including many returning staff members (who remain attentive and friendly). Let’s put it this way: if a visitor to Decatur wanted a true “taste” of the Midwest, I would definitely suggest this place.

THE LOCKER ROOM

The Opening Horn… Find yourself somewhere in the middle of loving real sport and everything except the predetermined outcome of the entertainment world of wrestling? Well then, Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby is the sport for you! And with Decatur’s very own Soy City Rollers celebrating their 1 year anniversary this month, now is the perfect time to check them out! What’s that? You hate checking out unfamiliar sporting events without knowing exactly what’s happening in front of you? Come along baby birds, I will feed you...

Halftime … For starters, roller derby isn’t a game or match or contest … it’s a bout, a pair of 30 minute halves contested by two teams, each with an active roster of up to 14. Each half consists of numerous 2 minute periods, referred to as jams. Each jam includes 5 team members from each team - 4 blockers and 1 jammer. One blocker from each team serves as the team pivot, who sets the pace for the blockers and calls the plays. A jam begins with one whistle sending the 8 blockers around the oval track, then a second whistle starting each jammer. The goal? Get your jammer past as many of the opposing team’s blockers as possible within the 2 minute jam (or shorter if it’s called off ). At the end of each jam, the teams have roughly 30 seconds to get back into position to start the next jam, which is where the team strategies of substitutions and team unity come into play. Have the most points at the end of the second half to win. The Soy City Rollers currently have 3 athletes on the disabled list, so it’s certainly not a soft sport. It’s also heavily built on showmanship

and entertainment value. Athletes are known for their quirky stage names, including “Tallulah Banghead,” “Lady Caca,” “Sherry Pain,” and my personal favorite, “Sailor Mouth Jheri” (one of the team’s top jammers, Jheri Keppler). The tempo of the bouts are high-paced, including an announcer and a bevy of crowdrattling hits. The balance of entertainment and sport bounces around so regularly it makes roller derby one of the most unique experiences for the viewer.

Overtime … After a year of rattling through a few dozen athletes and exhibition bouts, the Soy City Rollers now enter their first full season as an official member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). The season kickedoff March 27th, but consider yourself officially notified of Bout Number Two on April 30th, 7pm at the Decatur Civic Center. Interested in participating? The Rollers are always looking for new members, referees, non-skating officials, and anyone interested in being a part of roller derby. Slip into George’s Skate Center at 3710 Greenswitch Road off of East Mound Road on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursday evenings. The action kicks off with the Spring Fling/Season Opener April 2. Like the big leagues, drivers can race in series to accumulate points throughout the season, and

devoted fans follow their progress. It’s action you can’t get just anywhere, and it’s uniquely Macon Speedway. “It’s small; it’s tight and there’s more passing, especially the faster you are,” says driver Terry Reed, who finished 7th in points standings last year. “There’s always side-by-side racing—you can see three-wide racing at Macon.” Continued p.16

Macon Speedway’s unique setup— small size (0.20 mile) plus stands right on the track—combine to make it an experience that’s hard to beat, especially less than 15 minutes from Decatur. “It’s a small, intense bullring,” says driver Cory Daugherty, who’s been racing for 11 years. “It’s great for the fans because you can see the whole track without any obstructions, and there’s always action, so it’s a thrill for everyone there.” Part of the excitement comes from new features that amp up the action. NASCAR nights—when the stars come to drive with the

locals—are just one of the draws that has the stands packed. It’s an opportunity to rub elbows with NASCAR drivers, get autographs and watch them compete against the field of local drivers. This year the schedule includes two nights, a Memorial Day special May 30 (along with the Northern All-Star Late Models) and the Night of NASCAR Stars II on June 28. “NASCAR’s been good for dirt racing overall, especially at Macon,” says Cory. “And NASCAR Nights at Macon give people who can’t go see NASCAR races the opportunity to get up close and personal with the stars. And it’s

The Speedway hosts the open wheel POWRi Midgets and Micros several times a year. The High School Hornets kick off their season April 30. The 95Q Nationals come July 2 with racing, food and fireworks. The wildly popular UMP Summer Nationals and Herald & Review 100 hits the track July 7. And that’s just the start - the action runs well into September.

Gates open for the Season Opener on April 2 at 5 pm; racing starts at 7 pm. Opening night alone showcases races with UMP Late Models, UMP Modifieds, Touchtone Energy UMP Sportsman, UMP Street Stocks, UMP Pro Hornets and Amateur Hornets.

Why didn’t I know about that? So Friday you’re complaining there’s nothing to do in Decatur and you end up making your usual rounds, wherever that may be. Monday comes around and you get that call “You shoulda hung out man!” The person on the other end goes off about something they did over the weekend that earned them an amazing time and all you can think is “why didn’t I know about that?” We’ve all been on both sides of that call at one point or another. The moral of the story is that there’s always something going on in Decatur. You can always find all the local events in THRIVE, but how do you know what’s cool? Club 501 is your cool filter, and we point out just those events we know you’ll enjoy. And, we’re bringing it to you in weekly update videos to make sure you don’t miss that amazing time all your friends had. Club 501 is the group that’s “by and for” young adults. Don’t let the word “young” fool you though. Whether you’re single and 21 or you’ve just turned 38 and you’ve got a couple rug-rats running around, we’re here for you. It’s not about whether you wear a tie or tool belt to work-it’s about keeping your hard earned dollars in Macon County and affecting the community you live in. Practical Jokes

Many people get all geared up for April Fool’s day for the pranks. In some cases, preparing to be pranked. This guide to practical jokes will familiarize you with some tricks of the trade you’ll find helpful no matter which side of the tom foolery you’re on. Remember, a good prankster is a good planner, but a true prankmaster is also an opportunist. Go with the flow and remember, pranks aren’t just for April Fool’s day. Happy Pranking!

1. Wrap Stuff

You’ve probably heard this one, but take it to an extreme. Individually wrap everything on someone’s desk. Use unique materials like plastic wrap, aluminum foil, bubble wrap, etc. Remember, the longer it takes to unwrap the better.

2. The Rubber Band Ball

A slight variation on Wrap Stuff. The trick here isn’t to focus on the quantity, it’s all about quality. Get creative with what you put on the inside. Think: credit cards, cell phones, keys... you get the idea.

3. Hide

A classic that’s sure to pay off if you put the time in. This works best if your target doesn’t even know you’re around. Sure, anyone can hide in a closet and wait, but get creative with it. Receive a large box from UPS? Hide inside and have your friends play along!

4. Switcheroo

The key here is creating a very unexpected sensation. If someone cracks open an ice cold pop switch the liquid with water. Other ideas: salt for sugar, sopping wet towl for dry towel.

5. Fun with Folders Have a freind that keeps all of their documents on their desktop? Why not clean it up for them. Their screen will look much cleaner if you drop everything all in once place... nested deeply inside folder after folder after folder. Have fun naming them too! Your target can read a nice message as they dig through. If you want them to be really challenged, hide copies of their files at varying levels but delete all the information out. There’s nothing quite like the feeling that your annual report has been permanently deleted. 28 | april 2011

6. Please Leave a Message.

Phone pranks are pretty common and there’s no limit to what you can conjure up. Here’s a way to maximize the effects: wait until you know your target is gone and leave them a message with a co-worker, roomate, or family member. This way, you know you’re sharing the fun. Just think, this is exactly how rumors start! Here’s an example: YOU: Hello, is Brian available? RECEPTIONIST: No, I’m sorry. He’s stepped out. Would you like me to send you to his voicemail? YOU: Well, that would be O.K. I guess. It’s really important though. Do you think you could just give him a quick note when he gets in? RECEPTIONIST: Sure, not a problem! YOU: Great! Please tell Brian that I scored the front-row tickets AND backstage passes to the Bieber concert and we need to leave by 4:30 if we’re going to make it! Thanks so much!

7. Fill It

If you have enough of something to fill an office, car, kitchen cabinets, etc., great! If not, use a bag or box to hold enough aluminum cans (or whatever you find) in place to make it look full. An office with a window in the door makes the perfect target.

8. Accident Report

Know someone at work that’s a little over protective of their brand new car? That means they will be overly gulliable too! Next time you come back from lunch act shook up and ask your target if they have just a second. Get their attention and make sure they know it’s serious. Now it’s time to strike! Tell a tale of how something out of your control happened in the parking lot as you were pulling in next to their car and how it caused you to give ‘em a little bump. Act really, really sorry and watch them squirm. Tip: Works for motorcycle owners too. Try this phrase:”I just didn’t know motorcycles tip over so easily!” 5 bonus points if the car so new it still has that “new car smell”. 10 bonus points if the car is a classic. april 2011 | 29

Opa! 50 Years of Greek Revelry at Stars Over Athens Like all good Greek events do, Stars Over Athens started with fried chicken. Not what you think of as traditional Greek fare? It is when you have a priest who’s particularly fond of a parishioner’s recipe, so fond he suggests making a church fundraiser out of it. So began Stars Over Athens, the Greek Orthodox Church’s annual fundraiser that will hold its 50th anniversary event on May 4 and 5 at the KC Hall. Now renowned for its Mediterraneanstyle chicken and potatoes, Greek salad and saganaki (flaming cheese), not to mention the to-die-for Greek pastries

at the bake sale, Stars Over Athens has become a full-on festival of food and fun. “It started with a luncheon and became so popular that the whole community joined in for dinner,” says Mary Balamos, one of the event founders and St. Catherine Philoptohos Society members who still helps organize today. “It got so big we had to do multiple seatings and now for the 50th anniversary we had to move to a larger facility.” Festivities now abound with not just food but entertainment, music,

dancing. “Learning how to Greek dance is like learning how to eat—they go hand in hand,” says Denise Malleos, who leads the church’s own Athenian Dancers’ performance. This year to celebrate the 50th anniversary, she’s bringing back dancers from many years past for a special engagement. One of the country’s hottest Greek acts, The Kostas Kostanis Band, has provided musical entertainment for nearly 20 years and this year will feature a Never on Sunday Musical Production. Not only does the event need a bigger space, it needs more days. This year for the first time Stars Over Athens is split into two days. The famous Bake Sale— always a sell out—will run from 9 am-4 pm at the church on Wednesday, May 4. Lunch (including lamb on an outdoor rotisserie) will be served from 11 am-4 pm, with carry outs available and callaheads welcome. Gyro King will be serving in front of the church; Greek music will be playing, and both indoor and outdoor seating is available. On Thursday, May 5, the ladies of St. Catherine Philoptohos Society expect more than 600 people at the 50th anniversary dinner in the KC Hall. Seatings will be at 5 and 7:30 pm. Come for great Greek fare, and stay for great Greek festivities and more. “People come from all over, even from out of state, and this year the excitement will

really be there because it’s 50 years,” says Denise. “Put on your dancing shoes and come see us.” Opa!
