BEHIND THE
THRIVE
There's a whole lot of searching going on in this issue. Geocachers seeking hidden treasures, golfers hunting down pins and striving to be the best at what they do. We've even addressed some of the signs you see while you're on your way. If you haven't already done so, take life by the reigns, and go find what you're looking for. I rather enjoy Jimmy Buffet's thought on the matter. “Searching is half the fun: life is much more manageable when thought of as a scavenger hunt as opposed to a surprise party.

Kite Fest
Waves of color filled the sky over Progress City the first weekend in May. Like performers on a stage, kites danced over the crowd— thanks to 180 GO!, a team of quadline kite fliers who perform synchronized precision aerial maneuvers to music.
Ruffin' It! The Humane Society of Decatur and Macon County offered Fido a spa day to raise money for operating costs. Dirty dogs and divas, big and small, came out to spruce up, get chipped or get a manicure. The event cleans about 100 dogs on average and occurs twice a year. Miss the event? Drop nominal or pet food donations off at the office on MLK to support furries who have it ruff!

Summer Starts at the Oakwood Street Festivals
Block parties feature music, food and family fun for all Missing the old block party atmosphere we used to enjoy in neighborhoods near and dear? Pine away no longer, my friends. Grab the kids, a coozie or your honey (or none or all of the above) and hit the Oakwood Street Festivals. These free monthly Saturday summer block parties feature food, fun and fantastic music, plus some dancin’ in the streets (OK, I made that up, but a girl can hope). Rain or shine, you can guarantee the West End will be rockin’ with live local bands, delicious local food vendors like Moon the Dog food cart and a host of local artists and vendors showing their wares. Hit one of these festivals, and you’re likely to see live artists in the street doing demonstrations, live gallery showings, handmade crafts and any number of local businesses showing what they've got. A full stage showcases some of the area’s hottest talent, beer and food vendors satisfy all and special events like BBQ contests keep the entertainment going. The latest iteration kicks off from 5 pm to midnight on Saturday, June 30, with a lineup including Central Illinois Americana rock group Matt Carter Band, St. Louis bluegrass trio ClusterPluck, Midwestern acoustic party duo Acoustica and more. “Our focus is to have a lot of local original music, food specials at places like Donnie’s
Homespun, and artists displaying their artwork for free,” says Festival Coordinator Mike Tasch. “It’s a partnership among a lot of the businesses along Oakland.” Get in on the fun the last Saturday of the month through September. THE FOOD DUDE
by T. F. DUDE
IL Forno Woodfire Pizza A few days ago I decided to pick up a couple of old pals and drive across town for dinner. Frankie and Gary were waiting when I arrived and were having a disagreement as to where to go. “Meatballs Tom Toms house,” was Frankie’s choice. Gary chimed in. “For Pete’s sake. That’s where we had lunch.” Frankie wouldn’t budge. “Meatballs Tom Toms house.” Meatballs Tom Toms are Frankie’s favorite appetizer at the Il Forno Woodfire Pizza on Mound Road. The zesty meatballs are homemade, topped with romano cheese sauce, freshly grated parsley and parmesan cheese served over a bed of marinara. I’d eaten there before and was anxious to return. In addition to having a delectable variety of pasta dishes there are over a dozen pizza offerings. Their pizza, like the formmagio, which has mozzarella, parmesan, fontina, and fresh oregano topping and a rich tomato sauce, is prepared in a custom made wood-fired oven. To me this brick “il forno,” Italian for “the oven,” adds to the ambiance of the dining experience. Assisted by a pleasant and attentive waiter we are taken to Table 54, a comfortable out-of-theway location, where we can quietly enjoy our choices and compare notes on our selections. We learned that Table 54 was a favorite location of a local couple who frequently sip Chianti while dining on linguini con vongole, a dish of little necked clams served in a delicious red or white clam sauce with buttery toasted garlic bread on the side. Walking past the small intimate bar on our way to our table we pass by a dessert case displaying a plethora of treats. Gary hesitates.
His eyes feast on a piece of key lime New York style cheesecake. “Hey, Dude. Take a look at this.” The desserts on display as well as the menu had our mouths watering. We scanned a staggering list of succulent Italian dishes including many of the familiar classics starting with an offering of appetizers then soups and salads. The dinner menu continues its journey to veal, fish and seafood. From there it is on to beef and pork. It doesn’t stop. Next we find Pollo (chicken) sandwiches and Panini. This place has everything, it’s a pasta lover’s paradise. We had quite a debate and decided we would each try something different to expand our horizons. Fortunately, I was quite versed at the pizza selection having tried several during my previous visits, and I talked Gary and Frankie into the two I hadn't tried yet. I opted for the chopped chicken and avocado salad with feta cheese and Kalamata olives, something I'd been eyeballing for quite some time but never ordered up before. Again, Il Forno came through and served an exquisite meal for us all. Where this little italian restaurant went above and beyond, though, was with dessert. When the waiter noticed we were stalking the key lime cheesecake he asked if we'd tried the dessert pizzas yet. Dessert pizza? Yes, that's right. You can eat pizza and then pizza again, all in the same meal. We didn't put up much of a fight and managed to fit in a couple more slices, this time of a fruit pizza. Next up for dessert: the S'more pizza.

Who would you rather be lost with? You are going to see a lot of people wandering around in the woods in this issue. If you get too excited about walking around in the woods, you run the risk of getting lost. Me, I don’t get lost because I carry around a 23-pound ball of dental floss with one end tied to the trail head sign and one end tied to my backpack. That much floss will get you pretty far, but it is also a commitment. So if you’d rather not, you might take along a buddy. How about a famous buddy? A famous buddy who is famous for getting out of a jam?
If you were lost in the woods, who would you rather be lost with? MacGyver or Crocodile Dundee
40% Crocodile Dundee 60% MacGyver This isn’t unanimous (or scientific), but generally women of a certain age preferred MacGyver, while men usually chose Crocodile Dundee.

ART SPEAK
by Sue Powell
Each summer, the Decatur Area Arts Council embraces the opportunity to spotlight arts from cultures around the world. This year’s International Arts Experience celebrates the rich arts and traditions of the Jewish people, whose culture has blended its own ancient and sacred customs with influences from many countries where their communities have settled throughout history. As an artistic people, they themselves have left a long creative trail wherever they have lived. That trail cuts a broad swath across the U.S. in particular!
Image: "Freilach" painted by Jack Siegel from the JEWISH CULTURE: Arts & Tradition exhibit.
At the "Root"
Did you ever wonder. . . Who came up with that dance step? Where did that pop culture icon originate? How did a phenomenon like Broadway even get started? The answers are the “root” of it all. As a melting pot, America has been the lucky heir of influences from cultures all over the world – influences that have taken deep root in our society. The results of these roots flowering into amazing and life-giving riches are particularly evident in the arts. Just think about it. . . Jazz originally evolved from African Americans modifying European church hymns, folk songs and dance music to suit their African tastes and traditions. Burlesque with its British beginnings developed “top bananas” like W.C. Fields, Mae West, Red Skelton and Bob Hope. When the sounds of the sitar from India crept into the Beatles repertoire, an era of “world music” took flight. And that doesn’t even touch the icing on the cake!
Do these names ring a bell? The Marx Brothers, Jack Benny, Mel Brooks, Jerry Seinfeld, George Gershwin, Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Goldwyn, Louis B. Mayer, Stephen Spielberg, Arthur Miller, Neil Simon? The list goes on. . . Jewish-Americans have contributed to the performing arts alone in profound ways! It has been said that there might not have been a modern Broadway without their work as composers and lyricists. Both early radio and television owe a debt of gratitude to Jewish producers and innovators. Many Jewish playwrights have written Pulitzer Prize-winning material, and numerous Jewish comedians are American icons. The JEWISH CULTURE: Arts & Tradition exhibit, on display from June 2-July 28, includes a variety of art forms and ritual objects by twelve Jewish artists. It opens at the Madden Arts Center on Saturday, June 2, from 5:30-8:30 pm, featuring a taste of Jewish cuisine plus audience participation with Dance Master “Dancin’ Steve” Weintraub and a Quartet from the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band. If you’ve never experienced a Sabbath Meal, register to join us on Friday, June 22, for food, inspiring ritual and Jewish folktales presented by professional storyteller Susan Stone. Also, preregister the whole family to enjoy folktales, an artsy treasure hunt in the gallery and a handson art project on Saturday, June 23. Call us at 217-423-3189. In the Jewish culture, life is about relationships and enrichment. Come be enriched. SHALOM!

Dear Miss Manners,
L
My finance and I love the outdoors! How can we incorporate our love of nature in the most important day of our lives? – Sara
Sara – The most important day of your life should be a reflection of the lifestyle you & your fiancé plan to share. For active couples, nothing is as fitting as the quaint, outdoor wedding. The Pointe at Wolfe Run is the perfect setting to create that unique, distinctly you, moment. If being outside is your goal, you should tailor your wedding to a more casual feel AND count on being flexible. Even with effective planning, you cannot control the weather or situations that might arise from it.

Last year, The Pointe hosted several weddings under tents and pavilions. They were all beautiful, but the events that invited guests to dress a bit more casual seemed to work the best: flat shoes versus high heels, sundresses instead of formal. Remember, manners matter! If you are going to invite your guests to celebrate with you outdoors, be aware of their personal comfort and adjust your vision to incorporate the setting. The Pointe at Wolfe Run offers a local facility with a park like setting, especially ideal for intimate events with 100 to 125 guests. Call Stephanie at 217.233.3391 for more information.

Geocaching
words: Todd Hauser
images: Alida Duff Sullivan
When is the last time you were in the woods? I mean really in the woods. So deep in the woods you were happy to find a deer trail as contact with another mammal? Do you like secrets and mysteries? Do you like to keep secrets from other people? Can you a keep a secret while solving a mystery? Both motivations can be satisfied with geocaching.
How It Works Geocaching is the hiding and finding of secret treasures called caches. A cache (pronounced cash) can be a container as small as a film canister or as large as a fivegallon bucket. Inside the cache is usually a logbook for you to record your visit. If you find a cache that holds prizes, you are expected to leave something of equal or greater value, if you take anything at all. The person who is hiding the cache logs the location’s discreet, Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates with a service. Geocaching.com is the largest and oldest service, with more than a million caches worldwide, but other services such as Geo Bucket or Open Cache are also available. People then use those coordinates to get close enough to find the hidden cache. I used my phone with a free GPS app, although most
14 | june 2012
serious geocachers use a standalone GPS unit. If you think a cache has been moved, stolen or broken, you can use the websites to mark the cache for someone to check on it. The websites are also helpful because they have tips and videos detailing successful strategies for geocaching and how to search around “muggles” or non-caching people.
As Involved as You Want It Pam Rankin is a board member of the Central Illinois Geocaching Association (CIGA) and the director for the 2013 Midwestern Open Geocaching Adventure (MOGA), which is the largest geocaching competition in the United States. Rankin is currently maintaining somewhere between sixty and seventy caches. “When I started, there was only one cache in Ford County [where she lives],” says Rankin, “and after I had found hundreds or thousands of caches other people left for me, I thought it was my turn to offer some for others.” Sometimes caches are left for a specific purpose, such as pointing out the grave of a Civil War veteran or taking you to a spectacular view. All caches are hidden on public land.
For Jake Tolbert of Decatur, Ill., Geocaching is a family affair. He and his wife, Jenn (not pictured), build strong family bonds while Geocaching with their son Jonah and daughter Micah. continued: page 16
june 2012 | 15
continued from: page 15
“What we are doing is legal,” says Rankin, “So always be honest with law enforcement.”
Time Investment Inside Your Schedule
What I didn’t expect was the tunnel vision. My first geocaching experience was in a major park in Decatur, and I went a little bit crazy. The arrow was pointing me toward the cache, so I followed it. I left the sidewalk instantly, because it wasn’t staying under the arrow. I stopped short of climbing over parked cars, but it wasn’t pretty.
The best part is that geocaching only uses the time you want to spend. You can schedule a vacation to the Rocky Mountains around caches, or you can store a couple of Rock Springs waypoints on your GPS unit and brown bag a lunch.
Rankin laughed when I told her about it.
“I have a friend who works in the Senate in Springfield, who goes during her lunch break,” says Rankin. “Sometimes she has to explain why her pants are dirty.”
“You aren’t the first person to go bushwacking,” Rankin said “The shortest distance between two points is a straight line.”
The July CIGA meeting will be held in Decatur (July 22, at 4pm), and the 2013 MOGA will take place next April around Lake Shelbyville. Learn more at www.cigacache.org

[guide

garage
sale
signs]
Location, location, location.
Now that garage sale season has hit, it is easy to spot the prime real estate. Do a little research on where there's the most traffic and where there are poles or intersections that cars get stopped at. Think about where you shop, dine, drive and walk. Chances are your neighbors have similar patterns.
Timing is everything.
Once you determine the best place for your signs, know that you won't be the only one posting. The early bird gets the worm so get your sign up while there's room. Note the dates of your sale small on your sign so that others know when it's O.K. to pull it down.

Go big or go home.
It's true, but you already know this. An easy way to know if you've got it right? Do a drive-by. Better yet, ask a buddy to take a peek at drive-by distance. If they haven't seen your sign already, they'll be a great judge of whether it's legible or not. If you can find a way to go bigger than a standard 8.5" x 11" sheet you are on your way. The thickness of your sign makes a difference too. A rigid, thicker sign material like cardboard will hold its shape and will sometimes make it through a rainstorm.
Get inked. Now here's the real question: how do you make the sign? You can buy a pre-printed sign and fill in the details which is pretty effective but will cost a few bucks. You're probably having the garage sale to bring in a few dollars, though, so why not make your own? If you don't have a good, thick marker, you should definitely consider splurging on that. Pencil is absolutely out of the question! If you've got great weather in the forecast I'd opt for a Inkjet print with a nice bold font. Bonus points if you tile your pages for a larger sign.
The Devil is in the details. There's two sides to this story. Sometimes you see garage sale signs with too much information and sometimes they have too little. Figure out what the most important factor is and make it big. Really big. What's the second most important information? Go a little smaller with that and work your way down. Try to keep your sign clean and simple so it can be consumed at a glance. Is it important to list every type of item found at your sale? Probably not. Do we need to know what time you'll be there? Most positively so!

Looking Fore Entertainment? Tate & Lyle Players Championship Drives It Home. words: Joli Hohenstein
The road to the LPGA comes straight through Decatur—just hit the Tate & Lyle Players Championship for a front row seat. From June 11-17, Decatur will host 144 breakout players from the United States and the world for special events plus three days of all caddied 54-hole stroke play. The longest running tournament on the LPGA Symetra Tour (you may know it as the Futures Tour), the Players showcases some of golf’s hottest up and comers. Past winners include four-time Rolex LPGA Player of the Year Award Winner Lorena Ochoa and LPGA pro Jennifer Song, who won here in her first amateur tourney and stopped back in this year to receive a local humanitarian award named in her honor. “That’s the beauty of this tournament; anything can happen,” says Tournament Director Cindy Deadrick-Wolfer. “The cool thing is you never know who will win and who you’re watching—it could be the next great one.” Whether you hit the links daily or haven’t tied on a spike in your life, you’ll find fun fore all in the Players Championship’s many events for networking, meeting and greeting and just plain entertaining.
Birdies Fore the Cause “Watch the birdie” takes on new meaning at the Players Championship this year as companies put their hats into Birdies Fore the Cause. Local businesses pledge to pay $1 per birdie to the charity of their choice, tallying up the total at the end of three days of play. Track the birdies, and see where the dollars will go.

and face-to-face conversations. Run the gauntlet through Autograph Alley, and start your collection today!
Honoring Our Military Sunday’s schedule includes special efforts honoring the men and women who serve our country. Military personnel will be tending the flag on the 18th hole. Other special events are planned throughout the day as a tribute to those in all branches of the armed forces.
Three Out of Fore Here’s a great turn designed for flexibility and fun in any conditions. This year, organizers made the Players Championship a three-day tourney format with 54 holes rather than the traditional four days and 72 holes. The move gives them more flexibility with scheduling in case of weather issues and keeps them on the cutting edge of tour planning and hosting.
Fore the Community Don’t miss the special Fore the Community event Saturday evening after play ends (likely around 6 pm). Meet the players, watch the Decatur Park Singers and drop a golf ball to win (read on for more).
