BEHIND THE

THRIVE

Well, folks, considering how challenging it was to fit all of our March events into our calendar this time around (read: nearly impossible), we should have a pretty amazing month of entertainment here in Decatur. There are many that stand out to me and are already on my to-do list, but I want to take a second to mention one in particular. The Kacey Derbort Memorial Book Foundation Scrabble Tournament and Word Bingo Fundraiser. It's on March 17th, the doors open at 12p and festivites start at 1p including a local celebrity spelling bee! This foundation was created to honor Kacey's love of books by providing books to children to inspire the love of reading and to promote literacy. So far, the foundation has provided nearly 3,000 free books to children. Seems to me we all have a couple of spelling bees to get to this month!

Pi Beta Phi... turning back the clock

Photos compliments of Darrah Hulva, Pi Beta Phi

The Pi Beta Phi girls from Millikin University came in force on their "Bid Day," which is their celebration for new sorority members. With over 80 attendees they invaded George's Skate Center, which they rented out for the late night activity. Most came well prepared for the crazy costume contest, as you can see, and they also had a limbo contest and plenty of falling. Darrah and some others from this area hadn't been to the skate rink since many birthdays ago when they knew it as Skateland!

Out & About

A look back at last month’s happenings

All you care to eat pancakes!

The Village of Forsyth certainly showed their appreciation for the Forsyth Fire Department on February 18 at the Pancake, Biscuits & Gravy Breakfast. The firehouse was packed, and at one point we even had an emergency: they ran out of gravy! Of course, the firemen came to the rescue once again within minutes with a piping hot, fresh batch.

Latin Jazz at Katz

The Millikin Latin Jazz Project filled Katz with Latin rhythms perfect for some dancing lessons. A part of the "Kirk Out" series, this free event helps get Millikin students off campus and out enjoying parts of Decatur they may not have explored yet. Look for them out again on April 17th at Lock, Stock & Barrel.

A Knight to Remember photo: Sarah Jane

After encountering dragons, jousting, sheep tossing and medieval activities galore at the Children's Museum of Illinois' event A Knight to Remember, the knights were pretty darn hungry. A trip to Mama Mia Pizzeria, a new exhibit at the museum, was the logical next step, of course!

The 39 Steps work day photos: Katrina Smalley

How many steps? It's all a blur!

It's no wonder that Director Jerry Johnson (ghost-y looking blob in the top left) is a blur in the photo above. He and his crew work lightning fast on a set that must be just as quick to follow the action in The 39 Steps. In this hilarious comedy just four actors will portray heroes, villains, men, women, children and even the occasional inanimate object. Each evening Jayson Albright, Doug Bishop , Dreux Lewandowski, and Sue Powell will play a total of 140 characters in a whirlwind of hilarity and Hitchcock. You can catch a show at Richland's Shilling Auditorium March 9-11 & 16-18.

Up to the Challenge

DISC rock wall lets you climb every mountain There’s a place in Decatur where you can reach new heights every day. A place where adrenaline rules and being rock hard, well, rocks. At the Decatur Indoor Sports Center (DISC), 20 feet of pure challenge await you at the rock wall. For climbers like Dylan Pritts, the facility’s lead instructor, it’s a rare opportunity to rock it in central Illinois. “While the DISC is not the tallest wall in central Illinois, there are several routes that can be very challenging to most climbers,” he says. “If they really get into it, they can take what they have learned to other climbing facilities, and ultimately outdoors.” For the ultimate rush, the inexplicable challenge of mind and body followed by the weightless wonder of belaying back to the beginning, this sport is unmatched. “Climbing in general, whether it’s indoor, outdoor, bouldering, top-rope or lead climbing, is a great way to challenge yourself,” says Dylan. “Besides the strength building and cardiovascular aspects of the exercise itself, it is a wonderful way to gain confidence and enjoy a different type of physical activity.” Bonus points: It’s a sport that spans decades. “Climbing is unique in that it doesn't require a great deal of skill or strength to learn the basics, and it is something that can be done by all age levels,” says Dylan. “There are a lot of great climbers in their fifties and older, but it is also something you can start very young.”

A fact evidenced by the DISC’s broad roster of classes and activities, featuring options for kids of all ages. “We have seven different tracks to climb and classes from 5 to adult for everyone from beginner to advanced climbers,” says Elisabeth Green, the DISC’s assistant manager, “and we seem to get the most use for birthday parties.” Classes include Adults Rock!, Teens Rock!, Kids Rock! and Families Rock!, plus options for Open Climbing several times a week. Equipment (harness, carbiner, shoes, etc.) is included, and certified belayers can climb alone during all hours of operation. “At the DISC, I have taught Families Rock! classes that seem to be equally challenging and enjoyable for both the parents and their kids,” says Dylan. “Frequently the kids are better climbers than the adults, but it seems like pride motivates parents to get to the top.” Whatever drives you, climbing presents a challenge few can resist. And you can rock it at the DISC!

THE FOOD DUDE

by T. F. DUDE

Martinis at Katz This month, your loyal food dude took one (or two) for the team and did some checking in on Katz Martini Bar. If you haven't heard, they're now under new ownership, and so far, all of the refinements are exactly what this food dude has been waiting for. I rounded up some friends and hit Katz with the intent of tasting some of their most popular martinis and some of the new appetizers. Yes, you heard me right--appetizers, which are a new addition to the Katz mix. First up: a trio of Hummus, Guacamole and Salsa accompanied by a huge basket of chips. When I say we started off with this, I also mean we never made it through the whole thing and didn't make it to number two on our list. It was plenty for three or four to share. We'll have to review the others in another round some day. The Hummus was the best I've had in a long time with lots of flavor and a nice texture. The Guacamole was light and fresh and blended pretty smooth. I typically like a more chunky Guac with bursts of onion, tomato, or cilantro, but for an appetizer at Katz, this one is perfect-easy to scoop up and super yummy. The final element was the salsa and it had a bit of kick. Not too much, but enough that you jump back and forth between the cooling Hummus and Guacamole before returning to the salsa.

vermouth. You can get a great Dry Martini at Katz, but what we sampled were a handful of popular, contemporary martinis that are really just wonderful, liquid candy. What's not to love? So without any further ado, here's how the final moments of our conversation unraveled. "What's better than X-tacy? Pineapple Upside Down Cake... the martini, that is." If you've never tried Pineapple Upside Down Cake, please, stop reading immediately, bake one, bask in the glory of the flavors and then come back to this paragraph. OK, now, imagine everything you love about the cake. When you pull the glass up close, you'll inhale that fresh out-of-the-oven cake smell with the Pineapple undertone and hint of Cherry. It's all there. Our glasses were rimmed with large sugar crystals that made me immediately think of what the super-sweet brown sugar adds to the actual cake recipe. I just can't express how much we liked this martini, and it's mostly because it is such a perfect representation of the cake. There were other notable martinis. I liked pretty much all of the chocolate-y ones including the Chocolate, Caramel Delight and Tiramisu martinis. The X-tacy martini, which was extremely sweet, and the Strawberry Lemonade martini, which had actual strawberry puree in the mix, also stirred our palates.

We really did try work our way through some appetizers, but we were both pleasantly surprised by how large and filling the first one was and totally captivated by the challenge of finding the best martini on their menu. I must say, we made a valiant effort at the latter.

All things considered, the Pineapple Upside Down Cake martini came out on top by a landslide, but our second overall pick was called the Sapphire that we agreed was a great martini that we could drink all night.

To be clear, the martinis we tried weren't the classic with gin and varying amounts of dry

BELLAGIO SIPPING CHOCOLATE

Enough with the Irish, get on board with the Italian tradition of sipping chocolate! I found this little can of decadent, bittersweet sipping chocolate and fell in love. Owner Kim McSherry confessed that she likes adding a teaspoon to her coffee on occasion for a special treat.

THE LOCKER ROOM

by Troy Hayes

American Cornhole

The next great American game? For most, it’s a chance to have fun while priming for a game or hanging in the backyard with friends. For others, though, bags has become a competitive outlet that can earn participants some extra money. There are always pretty good chances for some extra cash, but ask anyone who plays, the money is secondary to the pure competition of it all. “I just love competition, and it’s a great atmosphere,” said local aficionado B.J. Rotz. “Everyone is friendly afterward no matter what happens. That’s nice.” Most events offer a competitive and a recreational bracket, giving players a chance to contend as they see fit. With more and more places putting on tournaments, the opportunity to play against a relatively level field is tremendous. The sport continues to grow. Topps made a baseball card of the world’s best player, Matt Guy. And, believe it or not, for the ultracompetitive there’s a chance to emerge as a professional bags player, for goodness sakes. Even that is growing. Executives at the American Cornhole Organization are also trying to expand the national tournament to include a $250,000 prize pool.

Even average players can have a good time in the competitive brackets. “It really is fun,” said Craig Goodman, who plays whenever his Master’s degree studies allow. ”It doesn’t really matter how good you are; if you get hot, anything can happen. I only wish I was better.” Two opportunities are coming soon to Decatur for folks to toss beanbags 25 feet onto a board with a hole cut, and they are happening the same weekend. The Decatur Park District will host a tournament March 30 at the Scovill Banquet Facility. Teams will be randomly placed in a double elimination bracket with the top two teams in each division receiving prizes. Pizza, donated by Sloan’s Calzones, and a cash bar will be available. The other big cornhole tourney in town will be held April 1 at Skywalker International Sports Complex. This one, put on by Maxey Productions, is also double elimination. The payout is $500 to win and costs $50 a team to participate. There will be a DJ, food and a beer tent available. Contact Jordan Maxey at 8534758, or stop by Southside Grille, Skybox Sports Connection or Skywalker International Sports Complex for an entry form.

Playing in eight to ten tournaments a year, Rotz doesn’t play nearly as much as he’d like. “You could play every weekend if you wanted to,” Rotz said. “There is a tournament within a couple hundred miles for something.”

ART SPEAK

by Jerry Johnson

Are you a player? Are you a player? In the arts world, that is. You may be and not even realize it. You can also appreciate and support those who do, by going to their performances, visiting their exhibits or reading their book. You can be a creator or an appreciator. Either way, you’re an arts player. The Decatur Area Arts Council is a major player in our community’s arts scene. With the motto “Arts for All,” the Arts Council strives to provide arts experiences that can be enjoyed by the novice and the knowledgeable. Founded in 1968, the Arts Council has called the Madden Arts Center home since 2004. This building serves as the base of operations for Arts Council staff and volunteers to reach out to the community. They facilitate and advocate arts activities through the support of artists and arts organizations in all disciplines, bringing creators and appreciators together. You may not be aware that the Arts Council is behind a wide variety of local arts activity throughout the year. Has your child’s class taken a bus trip to Millikin University to see a performance in Kirkland Fine Arts Center? The Arts Council has coordinated the PASS (Performing Arts Series for Students) for over 40 years. Have you browsed through the artfilled tents during Arts in Central Park? The Arts Council partners with Gallery 510 to make that happen each year. Did you see a local artist teach or perform at a community event? The Arts Council provides grants to support arts experiences through groups as varied as the African-American Cultural & Genealogical Society of IL, Boys & Girls Club of Decatur, Juvae Jazz Society and Webster Cantrell Hall. There is also plenty of activity going on inside the Madden Arts Center. The Anne Lloyd Gallery is one Decatur’s premiere art galleries, featuring a different local, national or international artist each month. The Arts Council hosts events, including classes for children and adults, Arty

Parties and special events. The building is also home to local arts groups like the Decatur Municipal Band, Barn Colony Artists, Millikin’s Blue Connection and the Decatur Symphony Guild. Though the Arts Council coordinates all this activity, it would not be possible without the support of its many generous members and sponsors. These people are creators and appreciators who often provide both monetary and moral support as members of the Decatur Area Arts Council. They understand that an arts experience is a conversation that can’t necessarily be put into words. When an artist paints a picture, performs in a play or sings a song, he is saying, “This is how I feel about that. What do you think?” Your reaction to that question is an important part of the conversation. So, if you’re a creator, start a conversation. If you’re an appreciator, take a friend to a show or gallery opening and join a conversation. Life’s more interesting when you’re a player!

Artist Joe Taylor talks to visitors at the February Anne Lloyd Gallery exhibit opening.

Three and Done

3-Step DIY So, maybe you like art but aren't feeling so creative. Perhaps, you are craftsy but aren't Martha Stewart craftsy. Here's a simple, do it yourself project that you can have some fun with regardless!

Classic 8-bit arcade art Here's an insanely quick way to craft a 8-bit styled piece in three simple steps. You'll need some paper, cardboard, ruler, X-Acto Knife, spray paint, something to write with and of course, something to paint on. 1. Draw a grid and fill in squares to create your shape. 2. Cut your shape out of cardboard with a sharp X-Acto Knife.

3. Position your stencil and transfer the design using your spray paint.

Below is the finished product painted on a scrap piece of laminate flooring. We'll be hanging this Pac-Man and Blinky print in the Thrive office.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Experience the pain and pandemonium of puberty like never before words: Joli Hohenstein | images: Sarah Jane

Can you spell “adolescence?” Millikin University can and does, in its latest production, the hilarious 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Playful and packed with meaning, the musical gives us a hilarious look at one of adolescence’s quintessential events, with the added twist of audience members in every performance. Adding to the hilarity, each night, the cast selects four audience members to come up on stage and compete in the Bee. “It’s a modern musical…it’s funny and it’s popular…and it’s different each night because of those four different people in the cast each night,” says Director Lori Bales of the Tony award winning musical. “In fact, we’re hoping to discover some local former spelling bee champions and invite them to the show.” Whether you’re looking to relive the murky depths of awkwardness and angst or not, surely anyone can relate to the subject matter and laugh, especially with such an outright bawdy, outrageous look at puberty. (Case in point: “My Unfortunate Erection,” the musical’s perhaps most memorable song, chronicles one poor lad’s illtimed distraction during his turn in the Bee.)

Bryson David Hoff as Paunch, Lili Torre as Rona

Jake Morrissy as Leaf Kara Leman as Schwarzy

“It’s just a show that’s very nostalgic, but in a funny way,” says Lori. “With a very ensemble piece like this, it’s only funny if the students can come up with a true performance.”

“This is a musical comedy where improvisation is worked in to the script, as well as audience participation,” says cast member and Millikin senior Collin O’Connor. “It keeps the actors on their toes, and it keeps the audience engaged. The comedy is non-stop.”

Photo: Actor Anthony Norman as Chip, who finds that puberty has set in at the most inopportune of moments.

Full of triumph and timidity, glory and geekdom, the Bee inspires loyalty and levity as we get to know the show’s erstwhile eccentrics. After all, in adolescence isn’t it the little things that matter most? The small victories and private triumphs that each of us holds dear and can relive again here in Albert Taylor Theatre.

And with talent and the misty memories of youth behind them, they certainly can. “I think everyone has at least one painful adolescent memory lurking somewhere,” says Eliza Sherman, a Millikin senior who plays Olive, a timid bookworm contestant more comfortable with fantasy than reality. “As a naturally shy person myself, I deeply relate to Olive’s painful apprehensiveness in new situations. Being an actor doesn’t automatically make one an extrovert.” Extroverts or not, the cast devotes itself to bringing the pandemonium of puberty front and center on the stage of life. “It’s all about the small victories that help us feel like we belong, and also becoming who we’re going to be and belonging,” says Lori. Something every cast member can relate to. “The way [Rona] feels about spelling is exactly the way I feel about continued on p18 march 2012 | 17

continued from p17

acting,” says Lili Torre, the Millikin senior who plays hyper-enthusiastic former champion and nine-time Putnam County Spelling Bee host Rona. “She knows her passion is a bit over the top and that not everyone understands her intense desire for the bee to go well, but it's something that's very important to her, and she refuses to apologize for her enthusiasm.” Something we can all learn both from adolescence and from this show! Left to right: Anthony Norman (Chip), Elizabeth Sherman (Olive), Jake Morrissy (Leaf), Collin O'Connor (Mitch), Kara Leman (Schwarzy).

Originally an improvisational play called C-R-E-P-U-S-C-L-E (the time of day immediately following sunset, for what that’s worth), The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee debuted on Broadway in 2005 and won numerous awards including a Tony for Best Book. The musical chronicles socially awkward adolescents as they compete in the championship of a lifetime and learn that “winning isn’t everything and losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser.”

MARCH MADNESS words: Troy Hayes

There are few times of the year when locally-owned bar patrons collectively mind the TVs and forego most idle chit-chat: Super Bowl Sunday, Illini football Saturdays and most Illini basketball games (though it’s been kind of tough this year). March weekends are much the same as the NCAA basketball tourney begins and we’ve picked the best spots in the city to congregate and get your fill of food, drink and hoops.

Great food, friendly staff, fun crowd. Just not enough TVs.

Some obstructed views as the giant screens of the golf simulators become TVs.

Laid-back atmosphere with tasty food and good drinks, but just doesn’t have quite enough TVs.

They’ve added screens throughout this local legend but offering only (Butch’s) pizza drops its overall ranking.

The food in the newest addition to the local bar and grill scene helps Coz’s make a pretty good splash in the pool of sports watching. They specialize in pizzas, but the pub fries and wings are pretty darn good, too. With TVs on three walls of the bar area and a couple more in the dining room, the view is great for nearly everyone in the place - nearly everyone.

Rodney Walker’s joint is a great place to catch one of the 65 games in the tournament, if only for the conversation chance with the former Division 1 and professional basketball player. But there are also great selections on the menu, including their incredible chicken and waffles. (Try it, it’s awesome.) They’ve got great drink specials and a stellar staff. For our purposes, though, it could use a couple more TVs.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP The Final Four in the showdown of Decatur March Madness roosts could have gone to any of the fine places listed, but the two that stood out just a bit to us were Sliderz and Sportszone, with Sliderz getting the trophy in an incredibly close call. "I've been to (Sliderz and Sportszone) for games, and they both are great places,” said Andrew Schaab as he was watching basketball at Coz’s one night. “You can’t go wrong at either one.” Actully, that’s the real point. Any bar mentioned, and more (Pop’s, Bourbon Barrel, LSB and Winery, to name a few), are going to be great places to check out the madness that is the NCAA tournament.

34 | march 2012

"There are quite a few places in town," said Nick Blackburn. "It's where ever you're comfortable that's best." So wherever your preference lies, our suggestion is to find a comfortable spot with multiple TVs in view, order food just before you’re hungry to accommodate a wait, tip the staff to insure great service and then sit back and enjoy the craziness. Oh, and don't forget to get that office pool entry copied so you can follow along all month.

Not the top dog in any one category but the food is great, the prices fair and the help is friendly as a puppy. Sandwiches, burgers, wraps, homemade chips and full dinner entrees alongside a wide variety of drink selections are all at reasonable prices. Oh, and there are TVs all over the place, so you’re sure to be able to see one where ever you’re sitting.

There is not a place in Decatur that comes close to the visibility factor of this Decatur Conference Center and Hotel establishment, and the food and staff are great. They have a wide variety on the bar menu and if that’s not enough, order early and you can get a bigger selection from the restaurant next door. The only (minor) drawback is it’s a bit pricey.
