BEHIND THE

THRIVE

Ex tra bits and pieces from the minds that bring you THRIVE! First of all, a big “Thank You!” to Flo (at Coney McKane’s) for making the awesome

gluten-free sugar cookies you see above using Andrea’s Gluten-Free Flour Blend from Good Naber Specialty Foods (Spotlight, p.08). They tasted incredible! Or rather, they tasted just like regular old sugar cookies; something our Food Dude absolutely appreciated after a month-long dive into a gluten-free diet (p.10).

Second of all, in honor of this issue’s Visual Guide on toys (p.28), we thought it would be fun to ask the Thrive team what their favorite toys were growing up! Mine? Furry ol’ loveable Grover was with me always. Happiest Holidays!

Downtown Decatur lights up as it kicks off the official 2010 Christmas Season by Jayson Albright

Decatur officially launched the 2010 Christmas season Saturday, November 20th with the lighting of a 30 foot Christmas tree in Water Street Park, the Jaycees third annual Lights of Christmas Parade, and the arrival of Santa in Central Park. The tree-lighting ceremony was lightly attended but understandably so, as the streets were lined with families anticipating the Christmas Parade. Folks were staking their spots along the route as early as 4:30, and the crowd overall was visibly larger than last year’s.

Performing to a house packed with enthusiastic music lovers, this was the band’s third visit to the Downtown destination and they did not disappoint. Full of high-energy rock-a-billy swagger, Travis and the boys had the crowd singing, dancing, and laughing all night long!

It’s showtime for one lucky person, place, or thing!

SPOTLIGHT

Good Naber Specialty Foods

A Gluten-free (GF) diet does not have to equal eating cardboard with a side of sawdust. Just ask Diana Janowiak, who along with her sister Nancy Goss owns Good Naber Specialty Foods in Mt. Zion. It’s a haven of good taste, where gluten-free followers can taste and sample pasta, cookies, breads, crackers, flour, soups, baking mixes, cereals and more; knowing everything there is safe—and tasty! “After my son was diagnosed with celiac disease, I spent years on the Internet and bringing in new stuff, paying for shipping— you could pay $23 shipping on a 4 pound bag of flour! Sometimes you like it but you always run the risk you don’t,” she laments. “Now I test everything in the store, from bakery mixes to meals,” says Diana. “So I know it’s good.” And she’s finding foods that don’t just taste good; they cook good too! Like imported Le Veneziane pastas, which digest easily and are easy to cook. Or her favorite ingredient, Andrea’s Gluten Free Flour Blend, so finely milled it feels like regular flour. “I haven’t used GF recipes for a while—I use Andrea’s flour cup for cup with the regular recipe.”

by Joli Hohenstein Since the GF world got a whiff of her wares, she’s become a destination, known both for her knowledge and her keen eye for delicious gluten-less fare. “We have your staples, but also your unique stuff from bakeries in New York, Pennsylvania, that people wouldn’t know were out there,” she says. “And Udi’s, the number one GF bread—we were the first one to bring it here within 100 miles.” Now nearly a decade into her son’s celiac journey, Diana never stops looking for options. “I just found a bakery in Pennsylvania, The Grainless Baker. There wasn’t a good hamburger or hot dog bun on the market—they were all hard or crumbly. My son hadn’t had a bun in years. I ordered them in, and he went through a package and a half in a week.” It’s results like that that keep her stocking the shelves and making mouths water with choices like mini apple pies, coffee cakes, and cheese cakes; cheddar snack crackers; pumpkin loaves; organic pumpkin and pumpkin pie mix; and for the holidays, seasonal decorated cookies and even gingerbread kits. “It makes you feel good for people to come in and say, ‘I’m so glad you’re here.’ It’s very rewarding,” says Diana. “As soon as I walk in the door, I smile. This is what I was meant to do.” Diana’s Gluten-Free Gotta Haves • Andrea’s Gluten Free Flour Blend (so finely milled it feels like regular flour) • Udi’s bread (and buns coming in January!) • Le Veneziane (pasta imported from Italy) • Pasta Alley (Decatur’s own pasta, now available gluten-free)

A Foodie’s take on Decatur cuisine

the Food Dude

Adventures in Gluten-Free

This issue’s Spotlight (p.08) is on Diana Janowiak and her store, Good Naber Specialty Foods, which specializes in gluten-free (GF) items and ingredients. With a friend recently embarking on a GF diet, I thought it a perfect time to take a look at what it means to go gluten-free, and what some options are here in the area. According to our good friend Wikipedia, a GF diet is “a diet completely free of ingredients derived from gluten-containing cereals: wheat (including kamut and spelt), barley, rye, Malts and triticale, as well as the use of gluten as a food additive in the form of a flavoring, stabilizing or thickening agent. It is the only medically accepted treatment for coeliac disease, the related condition dermatitis herpetiformis, and wheat allergy.” To put it another way, you can’t eat anything. At least, that’s what it feels like at first, having slid into a GF diet myself for this article. However, I can honestly say I wound up enjoying the hunt for GF foods, and was surprised by some of the findings. Obviously, Good Naber is a great place to start, and Diana is wonderful to speak with. She knows her stuff because she lives a GF life herself; every item in her store is stocked because she knows the good from the bad through trial and error (FYI, the Glutino pretzels easily stand shoulder to shoulder with their wheat-based brethren). Mari-Mann Herbs and Country Nutrition are also great places to hit, as well as Kroger’s organic section. “Organic” does not necessarily equal GF, though, so you still need to be conscious of labels. In

truth, nosing your way around any grocery outlet can be likened to a GF treasure hunt; if you look close enough, there are some unexpected and exciting finds out there (ie Betty Crocker’s new line of GF cookie and cake mixes). But c’mon. You don’t always want to cook at home. What about restaurants? The good news is that while not every place has a specific GF menu (some do, so always ask), you’re usually good to go via steaks, chickens, fish, veggies, and the like. So finding something somewhere should be relatively easy (though you’ll want to steer clear of any breading). Still, there are some items you just crave. One of the biggest losses for my buddy was pizza until he discovered both Godfather’s and Monical’s offer GF versions. Having tried the two, I’ve got to give the nod to Monical’s; on top of a great taste, they have their GF options printed right on their main menu! Trust me, after asking establishment after establishment if they have a GF menu, this was awesome to discover. And their famous French dressing? It’s GF, too! Beer is all but a complete no-go, though. You can find Redbridge in some stores, and Woodchuck Cider is free and clear. Most wines and hard liquor are good to go, too. All in all, my time in the world of a GF diet was eye-opening, to say the least. My single Thrive page prevents me from going into any real details, but trust me; a simple Google search on “gluten-free +[what you’re looking for]” will yield tons of further information.

Dylan Dunn and goalie Mitchell Lancaster also helped the Varsity team jump out with a perfect start to the season, including a Thanksgiving Holiday Tournament in Chicago at Loyola Academy.

The Intermission ...

The Decatur Hockey program takes pride in its schedule, battling the toughest competition it can assemble before tackling a hopeful postseason slate that – fingers crossed - will finish in the Blackhawk Cup, playing for the State Championship at the United Center in Chicago.

At 260 pounds I’ve never been an elegant swan on ice skates… So yeah, I never played much hockey, but I could’ve. In fact, any kid can! Starting at age four, children of all skill levels (if any) are welcomed into the DYHA family with open arms. “Every child starts in the beginners division until they learn to skate,” DYHA President Rob Lipic says. “Then as their skills improve they get promoted into the House program where they begin to play other teams within the House program every Saturday. Or they have the option to join the travel program. “And once the hockey bug bites you, every family is usually very interested in the travel program.” The House program is made up of four age divisions: Mites, Squirts, Pee Wees, & Bantams. But the pulse of Decatur Hockey is Varsity and Junior Varsity teams made up of high school-aged players throughout the county. “A lot of schools are represented and it’s a varsity club with a wide range of ages,” beams Lipic. Coached by North Dakota native Troy Lancaster with the assistance of Canadianborn Kevin Brassington, the 2010-2011 Varsity team is comprised of eight local high schools: MacArthur, Eisenhower, Mount Zion, Argenta-Oreana, Maroa-Forsyth, Meridian, Warrensburg-Latham, and Central A&M. The club is made up of five seniors, six each of juniors and sophomores, and a trio of freshmen that includes one of the team’s leading scorers, Mt. Zion’s Jack Lock. 12 | december 2010

“Hockey is a great sport that gets the kids great exercise,” Lipic said. “Kids that play it usually play a lot of sports, but they typically embrace hockey, and it becomes their favorite.”

Upcoming Decatur Hockey Varsity Home Games: • December 19th vs. Peoria Notre Dame @ 7:15 p.m. • January 9th vs. Pekin @ 5:45 p.m. • January 15th vs. TBA @ 8:15 p.m.

Overtime ...

Thanksgiving weekend marked the end of the 2010 High School Football Season, and on Sunday, December 5th, ESPNDecatur 1050 AM “The Fan” & St. Mary’s Hospital will honor the gridiron’s best with a 5 p.m. banquet at the Decatur Conference Center & Hotel. Tickets are $15 each; call 428-1050 or hit ESPNDecatur.com for tickets or more info! ARIC LEE hosts “The Aric Lee Show with Justin Lyon”, each weekday from 3-6 p.m. on both WDZ’s ESPNDecatur 1050 AM “The Fan” and ESPNDecatur.com. He is disgusted by yams, creamed corn, Julia Roberts’ laugh, Kid Rock, the University of South Dakota’s marching band, and Flow-bee’s.
