Noi Bai International Airport Ha Noi,Viet Nam Airport Study project - 2009
Noi Bai International Airport (IATA: HAN, ICAO: VVNB) in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is the largest in the north of the country. It is 28 miles (45 km) from the city centre. The travel time from the city centre is 30–45 minutes. Facilities The airport is small compared to the other two international airports in Vietnam. A larger international airport has been planned for Hanoi, and loans for its construction have been secured. It has a new 3,800-meter paved runway (CAT II - 11R/29L - Opened in August 2006) and an older 3,200-meter paved runway (CAT I -11L/29R) The distance between the two runways is only 250 metres, so the airport has a maximum capacity of 10 million passengers a year in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organisation safety regulations.
Master plan
History * 1995: Airport opens * April 7, 2005: Tiger Airways started thrice-weekly flights between Hanoi and Singapore after launching direct flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Singapore on April 1, 2005. Tiger Airways became the first budget airline to operate in Vietnam. * October 17, 2005: Low-cost carrier AirAsia launched direct flights between Hanoi and Bangkok. It is the second budget airline serving Vietnam after Tiger Airways. * September 2, 2007: A Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 landed at Noi Bai. * Since mid 2010, Noi Bai has been a hub for Skyteam; Vietnam Airlines joined the network in 2010. In 2010, the airport received approximately 9.5 million passengers and accounted for one-third of international departures and arrivals at Vietnam’s three international airports.

Dong Ho folk woodcut painting Museum Song Ho,Thuan Thanh,Bac Ninh,Viet Nam Museum,Painting workshop Graduated project -2010
According to the villagers, the making of Dong Ho painting was dated back to the 11th century during the reign of the Lý Dynasty while researchers propose that craftsmen began to print pictures in Dong Ho village during the rule of Lê Kính Tông(1600–1619) of the Lê Dynasty. In the dynastic time, Dong Ho village is one of the few place which had the tradition of making folk painting, along with Hang Trong, Kim Hoang and Sinh village.Originally,Dong Ho painting was made only with black-and-white prints of woodcut but from the 15th century, different colours were introduced by craftsmen in the village. As a village specialized in making woodcuts and paintings, almost all Dong Ho villagers were involved in the manufacture of paintings from carving the wood block, producing điệp papers, obtaining natural colours to creating new themes and printing. Traditionally, Dong Ho painting was an essential element in each Vietnamese family during the Tết holiday.
The colourful tone and optimist content of the image livened up the house and the picture was considered a good luck sign for the family in the new year, thus Dong Ho painting had other names like Tết painting or Spring painting. Before 1945, there were over 150 families in Dong Ho village making pictures. However, the tradition fades rapidly under the dominance of modern life in Vietnam and Dong Ho pictures gradually disappear in Vietnamese families during the Tết holiday. The principal buyer of Dong Ho painting today is tourists who are interested in traditional art, therefore the villagers cannot live on this production any more. Dong Ho painting also has to face with the menace from fake pictures which are mass produced by printing machines.
Proposed location In this project, the construction site is chosen to be in Song Ho village(actual name of Dong Ho village),Thuan Thanh district ,Bac Ninh province. - Dong Ho village has been renamed(actual name is Song Ho),building a museum here is way to remember the ancient painting village. - Convenient transport: +Near 20 road +Near vestige of a ancient habour where is landing place of merchantman.By this way,Dong Ho painting is famous and popular. - On travel line ,tours to traditional craft village +Land tour:Ha Noi - Dong Ky - Phu Lang - Xuan Lai - Dai Bai - Dong Ho - Kieu Ky - Bat Trang +River tour:Chuong Duong habour - Bat Trang - Dong Ho - Near village hall where villager sold their paints for trader came from everywhere. And only villager could sell paints here.

Garden’s attractions include naturalized plantings that are inspired by the self-seeded landscape that grew on parterre. Most of the planting, which includes 21 species, is of rugged meadow plants.
Landscape
Material In printing pictures, Dong Ho craftmen use a special type of paper named điệp paper (giấy điệp). Điệp paper is obtained in almost the same way as dó paper, the bark of dó tree, which normally is grown in Tuyen Quang Province, is soaked in water for months, then mixed with powders of seashells (sò điệp), which is the origin of the paper’s name, and glutinous rice to make sheets of paper.Thank to the element of seashell and glutinous rice, điệp paper possesses an exotic sparkling hard background and is able to conserve the durability of colours. The colours of paint using in printing are refined from various kind of natural materials which are easily found in Vietnam. For instance, the red colour is taken from red gravel in Thiên Thai Mountain while the black comes from coal of burned bamboo leaves. In that way, Dong Ho painting can keep its colours for a long time. Black - Burnt bamboo leaves Green - Cajuput leaves Blue - Verdigris Amber - Turpentine Red - Powder of red gravels Yellow - Aniseeds White - Powder of egg shells
The last stage of making Dong Ho painting is printing, the woodblock is applied with paint and pressed on a sheet of paper like a stamp, the process is repeated with different colours until the craftsman is satisfied with the painting. There are one woodcut for outline and several others for each colours printed, they are carefully engraved by hand so that the woodcuts can be preserved through generations. The finished picture is covered with a layer of rice paste (hồ nếp) to strengthen the durability of its illustration and colours and afterwards dried under the sun.In the past, to prepare for the Tết, craftsmen had to begin the process of making six or seven months ahead.

Decreasing heat effect
Greenroof’s structure
Environmental benefits - Reduce heating (by adding mass and thermal resistance value).Green roofs can also reduce heat loss and energy consumption in winter conditions - Reduce cooling (by evaporative cooling) loads on a building by fifty to ninety percent - Especially if it is glassed in so as to act as a terrarium and passive solar heat reservoir — a concentration of green roofs in an urban area can even reduce the city’s average temperatures during the summer - Reduce stormwater run off - Natural Habitat Creation - Filter pollutants and carbon dioxide out of the air which helps lower disease rates such as asthma - Filter pollutants and heavy metals out of rainwater - Help to insulate a building for sound; the soil helps to block lower frequencies and the plants block higher frequencies - If installed correctly many living roofs can contribute to LEED points * Increase agricultural space

Gate of Culture-Tourism Village for Vietnamese Ethnic Groups Dong Mo,Son Tay,Ha Noi,Viet Nam Landscape, gate symbolyzing Competition
Located on a 1,544-ha area in the Dong Mo, Son Tay district of Hanoi, the village is a complex of traditional Vietnamese architectures, highlighting unique characteristics of the national culture. The Vietnamese Ethnic Culture-Tourism Village project, approved by the Prime Minister in 2008, aims to honour and preserve the cultural value of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic minority groups and promote Vietnam’s images to the world. It is also expected to become the nation’s culture, sports, and tourism centre featuring Vietnamese cultural heritage and meet the public’s demands for recreation. As Vietnam prepares for the Thang Long – Hanoi millennial anniversary, the opening of the village is a politically, culturally, and socially significant event to meet the public’s demand for preserving the nation’s cultural value. On the same day, there were a variety of activities including a ceremony to honour the crafts villages of 54 ethnic minority groups, an exhibition showcasing products of the ethnic groups, and cultural exchanges between ethnic groups.
Proposed solution: - Present condition won’t be changed - Establishing clear traffic,no overlapping, including two main entrances and two subpaths - Good-looking,great culture values, harmonize with landscape - This construction is an original emphasized point and simple like the characteristic traditional architecture.

EVOLO COMPETITION Tokyo, Japan Megacity Competition
Tokyo is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan and is located on the eastern side of the main island Honshū. Tokyo’s government also administers the twenty-three special wards of Tokyo, each governed as a city, that cover the area that was once the city of Tokyo in the eastern part of the prefecture.
Population
The population of the special wards is over 8 million people, with the total population of the prefecture exceeding 12 million. The prefecture is the center of the Greater Tokyo Area, the world’s most populous metropolitan area with 35 to 39 million people (depending on definition) and the world’s largest metropolitan economy with a GDP of US$1.479 trillion at purchasing power parity in 2008.
Economy
Tokyo was described by Saskia Sassen as one of the three “command centers” for the world economy, along with London and New York City. This city is considered an alpha+ world city, listed by the GaWC’s 2008 inventory and ranked fourth among global cities by Foreign Policy’s 2008 Global Cities Index. In 2009 Tokyo was named the world’s most expensive city for expatriate employees and the World’s Most Livable Megalopolis by the magazine Monocle. Tokyo is a major international finance center, houses the headquarters of several of the world’s largest investment banks and insurance companies, and serves as a hub for Japan’s transportation, publishing, and broadcasting industries.
Climate
Tokyo lies in the humid subtropical climate zone (Koppen climate classification Cfa), with hot humid summers and generally mild winters with cool spells. Annual rainfall averages 1,380 mm (55 inches), with a wetter summer and a drier winter. Snowfall is sporadic, but does occur almost annually.
Traffic and transportation
Tokyo, as the center of the Greater Tokyo Area, is Japan’s largest domestic and international hub for rail, ground, and air transportation. Public transportation within Tokyo is dominated by an extensive network of clean and efficient trains and subways run by a variety of operators, with buses, monorails and trams playing a secondary feeder role. Other transportation includes taxis operating in the special wards and the cities and towns. Also long-distance ferries serve the islands of Tokyo and carry passengers and cargo to domestic and foreign ports.
Culture
Tokyo has many museums and theaters for the performing arts as well. These include national and private theaters for traditional forms of Japanese drama (like noh and kabuki) as well as modern dramas.
Cityscape
Architecture in Tokyo has largely been shaped by Tokyo’s history. Twice in recent history has the metropolis been left in ruins: first in the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake and later after extensive firebombing in World War II.Because of this, Tokyo’s current urban landscape is one of modern and contemporary architecture, and older buildings are scarce. Tokyo also contains numerous parks and gardens.

“They were sketches of buildings such as had never stood on the face of the earth. They were as the first houses built by the first man born, who had never heard of others building before him. There was nothing to be said of them, except that each structure was inevitably what it had to be. It was not as if the draftsman had sat over them, pondering laboriously, piecing together doors, windows and columns, as his whim dictated and as the books prescribed. It was as if the buildings had sprung from the earth and from some living force, complete, unalterably right…” (The Fountainhead – Ayn Rand)

A.
Humanity’s predicaments:
a. Overgrown population b. Environmental issues c. Scarce resources d. Culture preservation e. Ethnic conflict -Overgrown population is one of the most serious problems of humankind. Following centuries of maintenance and development, we are running out of space. Thus, a realistic expectation, which must be fufilled by humans, is to create new and more living spaces. - Globalization is inevitable. Along with the rise of the multipolar world, this makes it easier for countries to exchange with one another, becoming more open to trade and investment. However, in the long run, we need specific strategies to preserve the traditional cultures. - Human activities, of course, affect the natural world. In fact, we ourselves actually destroyed much of our environment, cutting down living space of the follwing generations. - Fossil fuels and other resources are being exhausted. - A lot of increasing ethnical and national conflicts are caused by fight for natural resources. Therefore, people nowadays face new situation: it is essential to innovate new, integrated living conditions.
B.
Suggestion
- Our group suggests a new mode of life which can improve future generations’ wellbeing. And most improtant, it’s the method that complies with humanity’s development progess a. Create a symbiotic relationship between people and the environment. b. Design multifarious living space c. Create a closed living circle d. Preserve traditional cultures
-According to the main points mentioned above, we propose a kind of super – skyscraper, a metropolitan. - The key point here is the exponential increase of the duplicate artificial land floors. Because in the future, the multiplication of building floors will certainly not be able to meet the demand, therefore, we may think of multiplying the whole ground instead. 2. Features: a. The exponential increase of the duplicate artificial land floors broadens our living space as well as the space for traffic – a problem which modern skyscrapers have not yet been able to solve. b.The construction’s green space and energy central seek to accquire the best way to use energy efficiently. c. It gives rise to a new concept: a super – skycraper contains smaller ones. Small skyscrapers are built on duplicate artificial land floors. d. Traffic is effectively organized on each artificial land floor and in the network between land floors. e. The harvesting of natural energy such as wind energy, solar energy… is developed systematically f. A firmly organized society is instituted inside the construction.

C.
Structure
1. A set of 20 duplicate artificial land floors with total height of 1200m 2. Space structure: a. Traffic area (on both the plan and facade) b. Living area c. Government institutions d. Technical center controlling the whole network (green space, energy development system, and other technical zones) e. Public welfare infrastructure f. Recreational area g. Office buildings h. Industrial zones i. Agricultural sites k. Airports, Helicopter station…. (Traffic on the facade) With this project, we sketch an edifice which has a high level of strict organization. Thanks to that, people become less dependent on fossil resources.
D.
Executing
methods: - Key point: disciplinary - Methods: a. Energy harvest method: wind energy, thermal energy… b. Social organization: a minimized society c. Space organization: many artificial land floors with the green areas are the key factors of the construction d. Methods of production: industrial sites, agricultural sites, office buildings… e. Methods of preservation: collections, exhibition centers, museums…

E.
The project’s polysemy
- The core thinking here in this project is to find a good way to harmonize humanity’s benefit and history development. Thus, we would like to put an emphasis on the concept of skyscrapers inside super-skyscraper. It is said that materials, after a chain of modifications, seem to come back to the initial mode, but actually at a higher level. So, if people used to make room for living by multiplying building floors, they would certainly, one day, multiply the whole ground. It’s an indispensable future history. - Covering the entire façade are transparent solar panels, which make the façade a beautiful reflection of the blue endless sky above. We would like the project to convey the message about humanity’s perpetual spirit though the image of eternal sky. - The large vault structure of the support looks like a rising sun at the dawn of civilization. It is symbol of a brand new start for human beings. We have been though lots of ups and downs, and now we are the vanguard of a new era.

HOLCIM PRIZE 2010 Bac giang, Vietnam Housing Competition
Construction area: Song Mai Commune - Bắc Giang Province. Natural conditions: -Terrain configuration: +It is the transition from the delta terrain to the midland, with some hills, staying at an altitude of 20.2 – 20.6 metres above sea level. +Sloping downward from North-East to South-East. -Climatic conditions: +Tropical monsoon climate causes a hot and damp weather with two separate seasons: dry season and rainy season. Average annual precipitation: 1400-1600mm Highest monthly rainfall: 254,9mm Highest daily precipitation: 240mm Prevailing winds blow in East and North-East direction. -Engineering geology: stable landform enjoys topographical advantages; especially the hilly place has high loading capacity R≥ 1.5 kg/cm².
Actual state:
-Area: 1ha -Building site’s description: On the transition from the delta terrain to the midland which slopes downward from North-East to South-East and has relatively smooth relief combining with a few low hills, brooks and streams, the building site stays on a hill at the height of 60- 66m above sea level, near the roadway. Pine trees cover the hilltop. Thinly populated residences live mostly on raising bees.As they settle dispersely, their work not only bring inefficient economic results but also exhaust scarce resources.

STEP BY STEP
Suggestion: 1. We would like to suggest a community planning called “Bee raising village”. Here are some of the conditions: -The scattered population reasons for the disorganized exploitation, which may lead to using up natural resources. This problem brings the need of an appropriately united system. - The residences are highly experienced in this work. +Landform and climate are suitable for raising bees.(forestland covers 64% of the area, steep relief) +The plan requires low initial investment but brings high economic efficiency. 2. As Vietnam is a developing country, the image of rural areas also changes in the stage of industrialization and modernization. It could be transformed into a minimized picture of urban environment, or it could stay rural but achieve a new look carrying its own identity. + The design is based on some traditional key features such as piled house
(house on stilts), terraced field… +We use one model for the whole system to build architectural homogeneous houses which makes it easier to multiply. +House units are arranged in a variety of cotes, avoiding monotony. +Use of contemporary as well as natural materials from local region helps create a modern appearance but still maintain a sense of community ( with people living in groups) 3. Architectural styles, techniques or materials may vary over time but the terrain configuration and climatic conditions basically do not change, therefore we consider those natural conditions and landscape the fundamentals. + Design a community planning that fits the bee’s habits. +Avoid interfering with the indigenous landscape. +Life inside is a closed circle. +Low construction expenses.

Advantages: 1.Create a closed circle: -People have a symbiotic relationship with the environment. -Used water is carried to water treatment tanks. Here it is processed by Vertiver grass which helps exclude wastes in the water. This water then would be used for plants. +The grass can meet the demands: it grows fast with developed root system and has high capacity of absorbing the pollutants. +Simple and economical (the grass lives in a period of 40-60 days, then we could easily place a new layer over. Also, the dead plants can be used as organic fertilizers as well) -Green space: +Preserve the initial landscape. +Use plant as a sewage treatment. +Grow more trees, assuring the food supply for bees +Create energy release home(each house is a unit of the whole village’s energy release space ) -Benefit the natural resources’renewal circle: +Higher use value +Reduce the loss and operation waste +Recycle and reuse 2. Facilities: -Each house provides a family with comfortable amenities. -There are private rooms as well as communal space, playground. -Green space +Trees +Room for everyday life activities +Grass on rooftops
-Multiple-function area :+Parks +Footpaths +Bridges that link different cotes 3.Sense of community: -A good sense of community: people work together in group in specific regions -Space for public interaction -Each several units gather into a cluster, building a strong neighborhood -Common pasture for the grazing of livestocks. 4.Widely applicable: -Simple construction -Popular materials 5.Reusability: -Plants -Water treatment -Grass can absorb the pollutants -Ground-line gradient supports water collection. 6.Scenic beauty: -Preserve landscape. -Grow more trees, providing food supply for bees. -The differences in cotes create good view points Green space, typical for ecological architecture.

Conclusion: About the problem of ecological architecture in Asia, we find out that the continent consists of almost developing countries whose rural areas have to suffer the side effects of globalization such as losing traditional cultures, increasing the gap between the rich and the poor or exhausting natural. That’s why our group choose this object to carry the project. In this plan, we would lkie to solve the following significant problems: -Make people a part of the environment, create a symbiotic relationship. -Improve the living conditions -Organize the population and their production logically -Preserve local traditions.
