W

elcome to our second issue of Thunder Roads® Tennessee/Kentucky. Without going further, it is important to tell you about our First issue. As you know our team acquired the magazine just over two months ago. And within that period, we went to work. Not a single one of us had created and assembled back-to-back pages of content, gathered pictures, coordinated photo shoots, categorized events, edited articles, approved ad graphics, added an extra ten pages, and laid out the printing portfolio for a magazine. And yet, collectively, that is exactly what our magazine Staff did! An important note-not only did we retain 100% of current advertisers, we also added FOUR new ones. We were a few days late in printing, and it was the right thing to do because it was imperative that we lead with our best foot forward. We are happy with the results. We hope you are too. In addition to what our magazine Staff did, our internal process owners also had several firsts. New accounts had to be added to our current bookkeeping programs and new payment methods were installed so that our readers could purchase merchandise and services with ease. Our website gurus went to work on updating information and creating new landing URLs to accommodate our interactive advertising initiative. Additionally, our annual subscription list, and our entire distribution list had to be merged with our new Kentucky outlets and then scrubbed for accuracy; hours of meticulous phone calling to confirm business locations and ownership. As you

can imagine, there is more, much more. To be clear, this venture is and will always be a team effort. When you see our magazine staff at events and in the public eye understand that they are supported and enabled by the best our entire organization has to offer. Recently, our staff conducted a two-day mini blitz in Kentucky. The purpose of the visit was twofold. First, to get our magazine in front of Kentucky’s riders. Secondly, to build relationships in communities so that we foster and cultivate growth around the collective effort to expand motorcycle tourism in both Tennessee and Kentucky. Working with our fabulous partners at Backroads of Appalachia, particularly its motorcycle outreach coordinator, Jay Fryman, they met and spoke with dozens of small business owners in over six counties and distributed hundreds of magazines. Word has it that they also met a Kentucky icon in their travels. Look for that story inside. Upon returning to Tennessee, they went to work on assessing the trip and updated our brand expansion implementation strategy for the future. Oh, and guess what? They returned just in time to begin the process for February’s issue of Thunder Roads® Tennessee/Kentucky! Never underestimate the ability of an incredibly motivated and capable team of professionals. It is what we do for you, our riders, and readers. Sincerely, Team Thunder Roads® Tennessee/Kentucky

t’s HERE, February, the month that for all intended purpose’s is the symbol of love (of course, that depends on who you ask.) We decided to ask YOU, our TN and KY readers. Do couples who ride together, thrive together? Well, you answered with a resounding YES! So, in honor of Feruarius, mensis Amoris we would like to pay tribute to those couples who indeed are proving that…. Couples Who Ride Together, Thrive Together ❤

t Shanna’s mos prized photo

Meet Shanna and Jake. If they look familiar, flip back to the cover. Yep, that’s them. These two lovebirds are as cute as cute can be and we had a blast getting to know them.

they have been to two Myrtle Beach Bike Weeks and many trips throughout TN. Seeing as Jake was a bit on the quiet side, we directed most of our questions to Shanna. This time we asked what their most memorable motorcycle trip was together. You could have heard a pin drop as Jakes’s face immediately turned beet red and Shanna’s grin could have reached the west coast. So obviously, we had to hear this story.

Jake and Shanna met online back in 2019. When we asked Shanna what caused her to “Swipe Right” when she came across Jake, she mischievously grinned and answered, “It’s pretty funny, the only reason I even gave him the time of day, is because he had a Street Bob in Voodoo Purple.” Which goes to show you …. Love isn’t blind? Jake didn’t seem to mind that his bike turned out to be the best wingman ever. Especially considering once they met in person on their first date, they never missed a day of seeing each other after. Shanna and Jake have more in common than riding. Seems vehicles, 2 and 4 wheeled, are in both of their professional lives. Jake is a fabricator that builds roll cages for off-road vehicles and jeeps. Shanna is a Business Manager and Riding Academy Coach for Harley-Davidson, which is where we met up with them to shoot the cover. Wildcat Harley-Davidson in London Kentucky to be precise.

Through laughter and slight love taps to each other’s shoulders, Shanna whipped out her phone to show us one of her most prized photos and proceeded to tell us. “It was our first Bike Week trip ever and Jake’s motorcycle broke down right in Tennessee. With no other recourse, they would have to double up. After purchasing a backrest for Shanna’s bike, as most riding couples would do, Shanna entrusted her love to take over the throttle and climbed on the back. UNTIL she emphasized, they got to South Carolina. It was at that moment, Jake discovered, this was without a doubt a 50/50 relationship. We think Shanna’s prized photo speaks for itself. We are confident that after spending time with Shanna and Jake and observing the evident love they have for each other, there is no doubt they will continue to Thrive Together.

In their three years together, 4

CONSTITUTIONAL CARRY V CCW a person who is otherwise legally able to possess and carry a firearm, given they are in a legal place they have a right to be..”.* So now that I have bristled the nape of pundits and aficionados, lets revisit our intent; 21 states currently allow Constitutional Carry, each of those states have different laws. It is up to the citizen to research those laws and exercise their rights responsibly.

I

By Bill Hall

n the past we have talked about the carrying of firearms, particularly what to carry, and mostly how. The what ranged from semi-autos to revolvers and the how covered everything from shoulder holsters for that 1911 .45 to hidden compartments in saddle bags and even in floorboards. As we are a group of people who ride their bikes across these fruited plains, there is a more pressing issue at hand-where can we carry. That said, let me be clear that this article is not taking any legal position, nor is it offering any legal advice on where one should, could or would carry a weapon. Concealed or otherwise. Our intent is to talk about the increase in Constitutional Carry States and how that might affect you in your travels. And the difference between Constitutional Carry and a person who possesses a Concealed Weapons Permit (aka CCW). Many state legislatures, to take a position that generally supports their Second Amendment constituency, adopted their own versions of Constitutional Carry which generally grants a states citizenry weapon carrying rights. I am using the term generally because there are so many variables, and as is the case with many laws, the sausage making of them are buried in the fine print. Constitutional Carry is simply defined as “a law that allows

Constitutional Carry is not a blanket allowance to carry a firearm. The phrase “a person who is otherwise legally able to...” applies. There are a host of restrictions that prohibit felons, certain class misdemeanors, domestic violence offenders, and in some states those who have a had a DUI in the last ten years, from participation. And then there is that clause – a person must be in a place they have a legal right to be. Banks, schools’ Federal property are all dealbreakers. Again, understand the law and do your due diligence. The larger issue at hand is that there are very few states that allow reciprocity without a valid CCW permit. Meaning, just because your state has a Constitutional Carry law, that does not grant you legal rights to carry in another state. That is called reciprocity. And most states that do have reciprocity with your state require a person to have a valid CCW permit. Again, understand the difference and do the due diligence. For the last 27 years, I have held a valid CCW permit in three states and still possess one today. And in every single one of those CCW classes I took, they all spent a vast amount of time on understanding the law and my responsibility to exercise my right within it. Ride safe, be safe and be responsible as you enjoy traversing this amazing country called America. *usconcealedcarry.com (Constitutional Carry/ Unrestricted/Permitless Carry) 2021

KENTUCKY

' n i p p i r t y a D

By Indian Rider Bill

A

few weekends ago we, Team Thunder Roads® TN/KY, made our first appearance in Kentucky. As was mentioned earlier, our strategy was simple; be where riders are. But where to start? Not only with the actual where, that was the easier part, yet how to roll the entire effort into something doable and readable with a storyline that invites our readers, you, to be part of our effort. As you can imagine, we met people, shook lots of hands, identified distribution points, dropped magazines and made new friends. And I still struggled with what I should write about Kentucky. Well, my friends, that answer came in the last two hours of the journey. So, I’ll start at the end.

What trip to Kentucky would be worth its mettle if it didn’t have a picture, a story about Kentucky Fried Chicken, right? Well, not just any KFC storefront would do. We had to stop in Corbin, Kentucky. The first ever storefront. The one where it all began. And that’s exactly what we did. After more than a dozen stops at leather shops, restaurants, motorcycle dealerships, pubs, visitor centers and even a Mayor’s office, we rolled into the parking lot of the Corbin store to take a few photos. At this point in our journey, we now had our resident photographer with us, as we just finished up a photo shoot. So, there we were, snapping photos of the store at its obligatory tourist photo-op display when suddenly, a car pulls in, stops next to us 8

and its driver asks “Hey, what are you all doing”? And it wasn’t framed as a question, but more so sounding much like that of a professional Showman. We turned to acknowledge the driver and it’s none other than The Colonel!! Yep, Colonel Sanders, aka Johnny Miller. Johnny, a professional Colonel Sanders impersonator just happened to be passing by as he was heading back to his home from an American Legion military service for one of its members. The Colonel, Johnny, told us that the museum was closed, but if we had time and wanted to see one of the largest private collections of Kentucky Fried Chicken memorabilia in the country, it was at his house just 5 minutes away. Talk about a no brainer! We piled in our cars and off we went following Johnny. Who knew The Colonel drove a Ford C-Max Hybrid? In a few short minutes we arrived at The Colonel’s humble abode and being the gentleman that he is, he apologized for not straightening things up as he didn’t expect to pick up travelers and invite them in.

ThunderRoadsTennessee.com

FEBRUARY 2022

As we moved down the hallway, he paused at a few select framed black and white photos, some were originals taken back in the 50’s, and others were reproductions. One picture was of Colonel Harlen Sanders in a black suit coat. His black suit coat was what he wore during the early days of his business venture, as he didn’t wear a white one until many years later. Rounding the corner into Johnny’s office, a couple of pictures caught my eye. Johnny was on a stage, in a Star Trek uniform standing next to a Klingon! “Johnny, are you a Trekky?” He cast a shy smile and went on to tell us of his opportunity to be on stage in a running play production portraying a Star Trek officer. Off on a smaller wall there were photos that seemed out of place among all the KFC treasures. They were radar stations, and above one photo was a picture of Johnny in an Air Force uniform. Johnny did a four-year stint in the Air Force as a radarman operating the predecessor to the AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System). His pride of service to this nation was another example of his true American roots.

His living room was more like an inner sanctum of everything KFC. Just about every inch of wall space and shelves were tastefully adorned with chicken buckets and smaller boxes from the 1950’s, an original pressure cooker (one used in determining how many minutes and seconds to perfectly cook chicken-8 minutes and thirty seconds to be exact-no peeking), advertising decals and framed tray liners. On his dining table were plastic food menus and visual meals representing what you could expect, all laid out in perfect portions - chicken, cole slaw, fries, a soft drink. One display even had a tin ashtray for your after-dinner smoke. All this and we hadn’t gotten ten feet inside!

Sadly, we knew our time had to be cut short and we profusely thanked Johnny for his time inviting us into his world, albeit as surreal as you can imagine. A few quick photos of our team with him and we were on our way.

The kitchen was full of antique decanters, ceramic holders and on its refrigerator clung magnets along with an assortment of nametags. My favorite was one that read-Colonel Johnny MillerChicken Master. I mean really, it’s literally one of a kind, just like Johnny. As Johnny took us through his home, it was obvious how proud he is to have such a collection and that he’s one of very few impersonators to carry on such an incredible lineage of living historians to perpetuate the iconic brand, all the while paying homage to its humble beginnings. A beginning that started with one thousand and eight No’s, and one yes.

FEBRUARY 2022

To sum it up, our first trip to Kentucky was a huge success. Our team connected with community business leaders who were excited to tell us of the great motorcycle routes in Southeastern KY and their goal to make riders welcome as the region transforms the forgotten coal communities into viable economic giants using motorsports tourism. We managed to pull off a cover photo shoot, dropped hundreds of magazines where riders are and met a true Kentucky gentleman. So, if you or your organization are ever in need of a true aficionado of everything Kentucky Fried Chicken, be sure to contact our new friend, Colonel Johny Miller. ost of you will agree, long hours of interstate riding gets BORING, but sometimes it is the only reasonable option. So what do we do for a break? Send someone into the gas station to grab food, while another fills the tank, and eat in the parking lot or spend an hour in a restaurant. Then spend more hours of BORING riding toward our destination. How about an option? Grab that fast food and look for a nearby sanctuary to relax for that hour. There are lots of available getaway places, if only you look. If you are riding to South Florida, just a 15 minute drive from I-75, near Gainesville, is such a rest stop. O’Leno State Park is a peaceful place to picnic, with some interesting features. Admission will cost you $5, for you and your passenger, but if you can afford to go to Florida, you can swing it. The park was built in the 1930’s, by the Civilian Conservation Corps, on the banks of the Santa Fe River, as a Florida Forest Service camp, and became a state park in 1940. The CCC built a suspension bridge across the river, dormitories (now group camps), and picnic shelters. However, the neatest thing about the park is the

10

disappearing river! After an easy 10-15 minute walk, from the parking lot, the roaring river enters a pool and doesn’t come out. Florida, like Tennessee and Kentucky, is known for its sink holes, this entire river enters a sinkhole and runs underground, for three miles, to appear again in the River Rise Preserve State Park. After your short walk, spend a few minutes enjoying the peace and quiet of the surroundings and read the history of the railroad town of Leno (originally Keno) that once occupied this land. Now, doesn’t that sound more relaxing than spending time in a chain restaurant? You should be more ready to ride after your stop. And yes, for the toy hauler group, they have camping hookups and, also, cabins, and tent camping. O’Leno State Park is located at 410 SE O’Leno Park Road, High Springs, FL, 32643. The park is open from 8 am til sundown. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Cooper

IMAGINATIONS Gen. 11:6 “…and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.” The power of the mind is a powerful gift from God to believers if it is used correctly. But we must first look to the source. Gen. 1:26 “And God said, let us make man in our own image (body), after our likeness (soul) and let him have dominion (authority) over …all the earth.” It has taken over two thousand years for religion to rob us from what God had given us. It’s about time that we realize who we really are! Nine times in Gen.1 we read “and God said,” then we read “and God saw.” God spoke and put spiritual laws into motion, Rom.4:17 “Speak those things that be not as though they are.” We can speak what the Word says about us, or we can speak what the world says about us. We can have what we say; we have “dominion over all the earth.” PS. 91: 10 “There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague (pandemic) come night thy dwelling.” PS. 82:6 “I have said, Ye are gods and all of you are children of the most High.” John 10: 34-35 “Jesus answered them, it is written in your law, I said, Ye are gods. If He called them gods, unto whom the Word of God came, scripture cannot be broken. 1 John 4:17 “As He (Jesus) is, so are we in this world.” This may come as a shock to your religious side, but these scriptures make it plain; we are “gods.” We are made in His image, after His likeness, we are His children and as He is, so are we in this world. But we must be very careful, this same powerful Covenant gift (imaginations)from God can also work against us if we abuse it. Rom.1:21 “…when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.’ 14

Prov.21:2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes.” Man can convince himself of anything. Man’s inhumanity to man can get out of control; the holocaust, the mistreatment of the American Indian, the abuse of the black race, yet man can justify himself. It becomes dangerous when we can’t decern the difference between right & wrong, good & evil. Before we know it, we have substituted the God of the bible for our own golden calf. Our Imagination is also the key to our remembrance and our spiritual memory which also keeps us sensitive towards the things of God. PS.103:2 “Bless the Lord. O my soul: and forget not His benefits” Deut.8:11 “Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God.” Ex.13:3 “Moses said; Remember this day in which ye came out from Egypt.” 1 Cor. 11:24-25 (communion) “This do in Remembrance of me.” Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up. To be found faithful, Pastor Ron

ave you ever come across a group of tattooed, leather wearing bikers with an unmistakable patch, their colors if you will, and immediately felt nervous? Or had this predetermined notion that anyone wearing a patch must be a troublemaker, or somehow a threat? More often than not, this is how many feel. There are numerous MC’s across our Nation, whose patch does not equate to anything negative. On the contrary, many are determined to not be stereotyped and go above and beyond to lift and support the brotherhood. Not just limited within the group, but as goodwill ambassadors representing all motorcyclists. They spend much of their time giving back to their community. You’ve seen them posting their Toy Run flyers. Or gathering to volunteer numerous amounts of time to charity organizations such as churches, child advocacy programs, helping with the homeless, the hungry, and the underprivileged. And you’ve undoubtedly seen their long lines of bikes escorting our military patriots to their final resting place. We have many such MC’s right here in Tennessee. Allow us to introduce you to those Patches with a Purpose.

Bannermen MC

Who we are.

Bannermen MC is an inclusive motorcycle club founded in January 2020 in Knoxville, TN with the mission of serving God through the motorcycle community and building brotherhood. We believe in continuous growth of our spiritual walk and of our brotherhood, striving to show Christ through our example. We’re all human, bound by flesh, coming from different backgrounds and testimonies, failing daily and striving to do better. Under God’s Banner, we’re Bound by Blood seeking accountability, and spirituality as we validate our brotherhood. We’re Bannermen.

Why Do We Do What We Do?

All our Brothers come from different walks of life, different experiences, and different testimonies. One thing that binds us together is our quest to honor Jesus and HIS deeds. Christ set out to find the least among us so that they may be saved, and in that he saved us. And we do what we do so that he may save others. Our Chi Rho, our Patch, on our backs is our visible symbol of our dedication to our mission; Service To God, Country and Community.

Our Community Service.

Since our inception, we’ve held various fund-raising events, have contributed to and supported other community events (Bikers Bowling and Blankets and provided manpower for Knoxville’s Meals on Two Wheels Christmas feast). Our signature benefit is “Christmas in June”, raising money for “Operation Christmas Child’. Our club is actively seeking riders who wish to join us in our mission. For further information, please contact us through or Facebook, Bannermen MC. 16

Bikers Who Care Why we do what we do.

Its simple. Show some love and get some love. We support the needs of children with severe physical challenges and/or serious illness.

Our Community Service. Who we are.

Our beginning was humble. Bikers Who Care (BWC) was founded by local riders in Middle Tennessee that supported charitable events because they cared. We adopted the BWC moniker as our Patch. The first event we supported, not even really as a club then, was a local children’s Toy Run. It was a huge success and we celebrated afterwards by having a rather large party. Well, the post ride bash was on par with the Toy Run so we decide to formally host a party as part of the fundraiser. And the rest is history. What started out as an informal gathering of community riders, eventually turned into one of the region’s largest motorcycle community focused groups.

FEBRUARY 2022

Our initial mission continues to this day, almost forty years later. The chief beneficiary of our fundraising efforts is the Dream Factory based in Clarksville, TN. Particularly, their Camp Rainbow. Camp Rainbow is a summer camp that caters to the needs of seriously ill children whose medical conditions otherwise prevented them from attending regular camps. Over the last four decades, we’ve continually raised funds for hundreds of children to attend camp. And we have just as much fun as the kids. During each camp session we arrive on our bikes and give the kids a parade. And for a few, we throw our pegs down and take them for a short ride. It’s not called The Dream Factory just because. For more information, please visit our website bikerswhocare.org and check us out on Fb.

Empowerment, The process of becoming stronger and more confident, especially in controlling one’s life. This is what riding a motorcycle has done for me.

This was my first ride on the back and my last!

Hello and thank you for taking a moment to read along. My name is April Violet and if you’d be so kind to oblige me, I’d like to tell you a little about myself and what this monthly article is all about. My second bike and where Being the the name Heelz came first of many from, BMW F800 ST to come, I felt I should be open and be honest in regards to me, my journey, my riding, but most importantly, what that very first word up there means to me. Besides, it is only fair, as moving forward, that is exactly what I will be asking of you…. Yes ladies, YOU!

Fast forward a couple of years, my riding was drastically improving, I outgrew my BMW G650 and My third bike went to a BMW F800ST. I left and my soul out the part of him crushing my mate! 2016 soul, again, another time. Again, BMW R NineT I outgrew my bike and finally moved on, not only to my dream bike but my first brand new bike, a 2016 BMW R NineT. I was thoroughly submerged in riding. I felt completely… what’s that word again…EMPOWERED!

This article will be dedicated to My first bike, female riders both current and BMW G650 GS future. We will touch on an array of topics, obviously riding, but also riding apparel, trips, and safety when riding. (Not just riding safe, but are you safe?) And of course, the mental aspect of being a female rider. Okay, more of that to come. Let’s begin…. hmm, where to start? Oh that’s right, there was this guy, ugh, anyone else’s riding journey start that way? Ten years ago, I was in a relationship, again, this sounds so cliché’. He was into riding and one day asked me to come along. Never in my entire life had I ever looked at a motorcycle and said, I’d like to get on one of those. NEVER! But there I was climbing on the back for a trip 20

to the mountains. We had only just parked, when I hopped off and I will never forget, he looked dead at me and said, “Oh damn, you aren’t the kind of woman who wants to ride on the back” That ladies, was probably the ONLY honest thing he had ever said to me. (that’s for another time) Alas, he was correct. After returning home, I bought my first bike and started my first hashtag, #Idontsitintheback. That’s not to say there is anything wrong with any woman who enjoys riding in that capacity. It just wasn’t for me.

I could fill up this entire magazine with all the adventures I have had along the way. The people I have met. More importantly how motorcycling changed something in me. It didn’t change ME, just something inside me. However, I am going to leave it there for now. Ladies, I have an assignment for you. Start gathering up your topics. What do you want to talk about? Are you willing to share your story? Are you a woman who isn’t riding, but very much would like to? This page belongs to you. Feel free to send me your stories, questions and suggestions. coffee H

ow do you take your coffee? Black, sugar, cream, or how about a sprinkle of bikers… Well in East Tennessee, that seems to be the way they drink it. With a side of donuts of course.

/ kof-ee / noun

A magical dark substance that gets you through the day.

If you’ve spent any time in the midst of a motorcycle community, you have probably seen bikers get together in a variety of ways. Everything from Bike Nights and Poker Runs, to Benefit Rides. So why not kick those events off with coffee? Check out how one local Law Firm supports its motorcycle community with a cup of joe and jellyfilled deliciousness, before riders head out to raise, not only funds but awareness for their causes.

The Union County Humane Society held its 14th Annual Ride Like An Animal Motorcycle Ride on September 11, 2021.

To learn how you can adopt a pet, visit www.unioncountyhumanesociety.org On August 28th, local riders came together in Clinton TN, to help a young man get a much-needed scooter at the “Get Jacob Scootin“ Poker Run ( which we are happy to report they accomplished)

"UM UM""

T

Did youKNOW?

ennessee is ranked 6th in the Nation for uninsured motorists. 20% of Tennesseans are on the roads with NO insurance. It is estimated that 1-6 drivers in this country are riding DIRTY- (no insurance) or riding DUSTY(underinsured) YEAH, WE COULDN’T BELIEVE IT EITHER! THIS COULD BE CATASTROPHIC FOR MOTORCYCLISTS! UM, SO LET’S TALK! See what we did there?

Uninsured Motorists (UM) and Underinsured Motorists (UIM) Insurance is an ABSOLUTE necessity for riders. You don’t think so?? Read that first paragraph AGAIN! If you want to play the odds, do it in Vegas and not on your bike! Seriously, have you ever known a motorcyclist that was hit by a driver and walked away with just whiplash? Didn’t think so. It is almost a given, that injuries sustained as a rider are going to surpass the state-mandated minimum policy of $25,000. And before you go thinking, well I’ll just sue them for my medical expenses. NEWSFLASH… If Mr. Johnny no-insurance is driving around not paying to be properly insured, putting all of us at risk. Chances are, he isn’t living in a mansion on the beach with an outrageous stock portfolio! GET WHAT WE ARE SAYING? IT’S QUITE SIMPLE! If you get hit on your bike by a driver riding dirty, or even dusty, your UM and UIM coverage will help cover medical and property expenses. SHALL WE SAY IT LOUDER FOR THOSE IN THE BACK?

In Tennessee, you are required to opt out in writing if you wish to decline UM and/or UIM coverage. DON’T SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE. So, do all of you motorcyclists reading this #understandtheassignment? CALL YOUR INSURANCE AGENT, OR A FRIEND’S AGENT, OR YOUR COUSIN’S BEST FRIENDS WIFE’S AGENT! OR GIVE INGRID A CALL. Whoever you are calling…. DO IT NOW! OH, AND ONE MORE THING… ASK EM’ TO STACK EM’ AND MAX EM’

Be sure to get the MAX possible of UM and UIM coverage. Then ask them to stack them. That’s right. You can have your uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage stacked, effectively doubling your coverage in the event of an accident. DO WE NEED TO RECAP? NO? WONDERFUL…. because at this point you should be busy making a phone call! In all seriousness. We are extremely passionate about being sure all Motorcyclists are fully aware of the importance of UM and UIM Insurance. If you ride motorcycles, do it not only for your protection but for your loved ones as well. Information courtesy of Insurance-Research.org

King of the Baggers: Indian or Harley?

NAMIL News

MotoAmerica’s “King of the Baggers” exhibition race in 2020 was an absolute smashing success. Viewers tuned in by the millions from across the country to see the 800 lb. baggers literally throw themselves around the Laguna Seca. The race and results were exciting enough that MotoAmerica decided to expand the series in 2021 by adding a 5-race circuit following the HONOS Superbike Series.

The King of Baggers was so successful in its inaugural run that FOX Sports has agreed to broadcast the races, which is a huge win for the series and motorcycle racing in general. In total, 14 teams joined in the fun in round one with a number of aftermarket companies on both Indians and Harley’s jumping at the chance to show what they can do.

Don’t let people scare you by telling you that you can be held liable for another person’s injuries by trying to help them. There are Good Samaritan laws that offer legal protection to people who give reasonable assistance to those who are injured, ill, in peril, or otherwise incapacitated. In general, if you were acting as a Good Samaritan and not being paid or accepting any compensation for your help, you cannot be held liable for the person’s injuries unless you were the person who caused the injury to start with. However, you could be held liable for a person’s injuries if, through gross negligence, you caused more injuries. Good Samaritan laws vary from state to state. The information regarding volunteer protection acts are often part of a state’s statutes on courts or judicial remedies. Every state organizes its statutes differently and some have a number of different codes not just one state code, which can complicate the matter. Our attorneys are available to meet with you or your motorcycle organization to provide insight and specific knowledge regarding the Good Samaritan laws that apply in our state. Motorcycling Most any motorcyclist will confirm that riding takes them to a happy place. We all know the exhilarating feeling of freedom that comes while riding. The feel of the wind, the intensity of the smells in the air, the vibrant views that come at you as if you’re wearing 3D glasses…

In contrast, the control group’s scores slightly decreased. In addition to keep your mind on its best game, riding has been proven to have a positive impact on mental health, helping mood and reducing stress. The study’s rider participants noted that after 60 days of consistent motorcycle use, they had reduced stress levels and were generally happier.

You know that adrenaline rush you get each time you accelerate on your bike? That’s the release of endorphins. Not only do endorphins feel great, they help improve your mood as well. A

s you may have noticed in this edition of Thunder Roads® Tennessee/ Kentucky, many things have changed, this column is another example. First off, our entire staff and most of all, our readers, express our utmost respect and thanks to Bob “Bulldog” Ousley for being the voice and authority on veteran’s issues for this magazine over the last several years. Bob has been a solid no-fail contributor and we appreciate what he has done for us and the Veteran community. Salute, Bob. As we move forward, we’ll be covering important issues (updated health benefits, new hazardous exposure compensation filing, state/regional events of interest redeployment/homecomings), listing resources and providing appropriate contact information for Veterans and their families. With a combined DoD workforce force of over 60,000 Active Duty and Reserve forces in Kentucky and Tennessee, another 14,000 DoD Civilian employees, a staggering 765,000 combined retired military personnel population, and tens of thousands of family members conducting their day-to-day operations at home while their loved ones are deployed, it’s important that we offer relevant information so that we can all continue to operate effectively. Additionally, we’ll be highlighting our local heroes who served and who are still serving. Covering the unique history of The Volunteer State and The Bluegrass State’s contribution to the formation of this Nation before it was really a Nation and their service to it today as well as giving shoutouts to our VFW, American Legion, ROTC/JROTC and Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association do-gooders who press the good fight in our communities; their mission continues.

My aspirations were simple; I wanted to see the world from 20,000 feet. As a Crew Chief aboard a C-130, I did exactly that. Yep, I’m a blue suiter. I chose to fly in a plane and sleep in a hoteldon’t hate me for it. Life is all about choices. As my twenty-two-year career waned, I found myself reflecting upon why I entered the military in service to this nation. Of all the things I’ve done, accomplished and experienced in my career the single event that put it all in motion was the day I entered a recruiter’s office. It was that day that I put my life in the hands of others to make, break or shape me. I was excited, anxious, a little proud and a lot uncertain. After some preliminary testing, background checks and so forth, I raised my right hand, and I was in. The ensuing years had their difficulties for sure and my journey would not have been possible without guidance, mentorship, and dedication from a select few superiors. They were in effect honoring my Oath of Enlistment. My contract with this country if you will. What was the best way for me to honor the voluntary enlistment of my junior Airmen? To help them grow and have the same opportunities and worldly experiences that I had? I became a First Sergeant. I became that top enlisted mentor. That top enlisted member responsible for their safety, training, welfare, morale, discipline, and good military order. As we move along in this new journey together, understand that we put people first, always. Nothing happens without people, nothing. Tennessee and Kentucky riders, this is YOUR motorcycle magazine. I openly invite each of you to comment and offer topics of interest that you feel are important to the growth of this column. Send me an email at: getmoreinfo@thunderroadstennessee.com

Honoring a LOCAL HERO

So naturally, the desire to come together and pay respect with a benefit ride, was without question. Enter Pete’s Place, a local restaurant in Maynardville, TN.

O

Only 12 miles from the school where Army Staff Sgt Ryan C. Knauss graduated from, sits a restaurant where most locals go when in search of the best steak around. To the motorcycle community, Pete’s Place is home to Wednesday’s Hump Day Hangout. It came as no surprise, that Keith Neese, the owner of Pete’s Place had a heartfelt desire to honor this young man. And so, the 1st Annual Ryan C. Knauss ‘Honor Ride’ was scheduled.

Many of those are within the motorcycle community.

The ‘Honor Ride’ would be no easy task, but the pure dedication and teamwork between the motorcycle community of East Tennessee, Pete’s Place, Garza Law Firm, Thunder Roads® TN/KY, The Tri-County Veterans Honor Guard, and countless volunteers, would prove that when hearts share a love and respect for the

n August 26th, 2021 our Nation’s heart felt the loss of 13 American service members. One of the fallen was our own Local Hero, Army Staff Sgt Ryan C. Knauss.

Being from Corryton, Tennessee, and a graduate of Gibbs High School, Army Staff Sgt Ryan C. Knauss was well known and respected by many here in East Tennessee. You didn’t have to go far to come across someone who knew him personally and hurt from the loss of such an incredible young man.

We not only honor, Army Staff Sgt Ryan C. Knauss. We honor all 12 of the Heroes that lost their lives on August 26th, 2021

Nicole Gee, 23, of Roseville, Calif. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Darin Taylor Hoover, 31, of Utah Marine Corps Cpl. Hunter Lopez, 22, of Indio, Calif. sacrifice made by our servicemen and women, no mountain shall be unmoved. On Saturday, October 9th, American Flags lined Maynardville Highway. Police were in position to escort whoever chose to ride, whether 2, 3, or 4 wheels. They were there not only to pay their respects but to provide the riders with safety. Registration was set up; coffee and donuts were being served and the bikes started to roll in. Not knowing what the turnout would be, the only concern was that respect was paid to a lost hero. However, after 50 bikes arrived, then 50 more and 50 more, and so on and so on, it was evident our community would unite that day as grieving Americans. The anthem was sung (by members of Gibbs High School Choir), prayers were spoken, and the bikes rode out with a parade of flags proudly waving. Families along the route came out from their homes to join in the tribute as the riders went by. Upon returning, The Tri-County Honor Guard rendered a 21-gun salute and an emotional folding of the flag. The National Anthem would be sung again as 13 large flags stood on a hill, representing the young lives lost too soon. All 13 soldiers’ names would be read aloud and not a dry eye could be found. That day, we Honored a Local Hero.
