As a member of the every growing religion of Speedway yesterday was day one of a series of celebration to the congregation. Whilst some will no doubt be upset at the reference of a religion i believe the reference to be appropriate. We, the congregation, have a set of beliefs and a faith. We go with a large group of similar minded people whom share the beliefs. We dress in a accepted form of bold fluorescent coloured shirts, caps and jackets that adorn the picture/s and car number of the chosen ones. The sharing of these beliefs brings so many people from across Australia and the world ....it must be a good thing. An assault of all senses - you can see, hear, feel, smell and touch this source of joy. The dictionary has it as: re·li·gion [ri-lij-uhn] noun a set of beliefs concerning the cause To me my beliefs are simple concerning the cause, they are basic and constant and delivered in the concrete walled venues. World Series Sprintcars may not be a true religion but for some one whom has had the privilege to live with the circus and marvel from the mounds on the outside - I truly believe this is the greatest sport with some of the most awesome people. Beliefs and cause .. yep WSS provides it for me. Darren Disbury Aka “The Red Dragon”

Lines Motors To WSS Opening Win Steven Lines motored to an emphatic win in tonight’s first round of the 2013/2014 ENZED World Series Sprintcars Championship at Speedway City Virginia in front of a packed parochial South Aussie crowd. The Mt. Gambier hard charger claimed the 35 lap main $10,000 to win main event but was lucky to do so after his engine began to falter with much of the race still to run. “I can’t say when it started to break down,” explained Lines’ car owner Brian Hall, “but I know we had at least ten laps still to go when it started to sound really bad. I’d say that we’re lucky it lasted the distance but I don’t know how much damage we’ve done as yet.” Despite the motor issue Lines simply refused to lose and crossed the line to take the win from Brad Keller in second. For the second year in succession, the young local driver mixed it with his more experienced compatriots in the main event

at the Speedway City venue. Keller started from pole position in the A Main and led the way during the opening half of the 35-lap journey - which was punctuated by two red light stoppages. The first stoppage was came about due to a mutlicar pile up, and the second following a sickening wreck that saw Robbie Farr and Ian Madsen spiral through the air, luckily they were both uninjured in the incident. Krikke Motor Sport pilot Brooke Tatnell came home in third ahead of reigning champion James McFadden and Ryan Jones. Luke Dillon finished sixth ahead of Randy Hannagan, David Murcott, Matt Egel as Trevor Green rounded out the top ten. After using a provisional start to make the A Main, Monte Motorsport driver Shane Stewart had charged his way from 21st to sixth before he stopped on the circuit.

Bits and Pieces

Steven Lines’ car owner Brian Hall has left Perth to join his team for seven weeks throughout Australia during the busy World Series Sprintcars rounds The Crew chief for the W25 Taylor Milling car is none other than Dave McFadden (pictured below), as his son James drives the Australia 1 Cool Chassis with Glen Beaton as his crew chief, James’ father Dave looks after the co-team car on race nights and also assists with his son’s preparation where required.

After a season off to start a family, Bordertown’s Dylan Jenkin is back full-time behind the family’s Tintinara Truck and Trailer #51 car. The Jenkins family are the heart and soul behind Dylan’s racing with Dad as crew chief, Mum on the food and water patrol for the boys and Sister Jamie also in the background helping out. The young, the wise and the experienced Watching the Brazier family in action in the pit area at Speedway City, it was a surprise to see guru Steve Brazier spend so much time on his grandson Jordyn’s car while Garry and the rest of the crew just tinkered on the N21 steered by the six-time Australian Champion. Not surprised, as in it was Steve’s grandson, more so how much time Steve worked

and talked with Jordyn about Speedway City and where to and where not too run at this tricky Adelaide venue installing confidence in the young driver. What was also noticeable with the Brazier clan was the famous Twin Steer transporter that has been at the forefront of the brazier racing team for so many years has been retired in place of a new 40-foot state of the art team transporter.

Driver Quotes

The Thursday Thunder News crew caught up with several drivers throughout the night at Speedway City. “I’m privileged to be one person who can actually say I get to race all year round, the monte Motorsport team is a full professional operation and in look forward the next 8 weeks in Australia” - Shane Stewart

The tradition of a large crowed at the Boxing Day Round of World Series Sprintcars continued last night at Adelaide’s Speedway City. A huge crowd assembled once again with lot of people flying in from all parts of Australia and some of the largest crowds in from Perth. While the editorial team wandered in and out of the pits gathering information for today’s edition of Thursday Thunder News, we were commonly told the Thursday Thunder Facebook

reason these people venture so far for Christmas Sprintcar action was simply, there is nothing like Speedweek at Christmas time. Now with Speedweek being only five rounds, many people have chosen to start and follow the complete series from Adelaide to Warnambool. The people have spoken, if you hold a large speedway event at the peak holiday time of the year, the fans will attend.

“To have USA world of outlaws commentator Johnny Gibson around for the first seven rounds is an awesome pull for our sport,” - Dylan Jenkin “To get back into this car from my go kart is a hard adjustment to get used to but I wouldn’t have it any other way,” - Jake Tranter “Wow that was a buzz, first time around this place and it’s quick, fences all around, not something I’m used to being from Sydney,” Jackson Delamont “I’ve had a good start to this season and now looking forward to building on that,” - Robbie Farr An incident in a heat race had cars going every which way possible, Kyle Hirst came off second best ending up on his side and as he left the scene of the crime Kyle ventured over to the Brad Keller car to exchange words, after the incident track announcer Wade Aunger asked Kyle for his thoughts “Kyle, you went to exchange some words with Brad Keller in turn 2, do you mind telling us what was said?” Hirst replied “I just told Brad it wasn’t his fault and we should get together and have dinner sometime” Now, do you think that was was said? Behind the scenes with the WSS team

T

he activities by the Speedway Australia World Series Sprintcars (WSS) Officials Team are not a lot different to the race teams that compete throughout the Speedweek. There’s a lot of hours in set up, on-track activities, packing down and then travelling to the next venue, with the average day being more than 14 hours long. Thursday Thunder caught up with WSS Chief Steward Gary Pendelbury to find out more from behind the scenes. The role Chief Steward he has multiple facets to it but first and foremost, the World Series Sprintcar event are a team. Pendelbury’s Speedweek preparations starts several weeks before he leave his home town of Darwin with a number of review and refreshing sessions of the relevant Supplementary Regulations and Rules for the series while preparing a briefcase full of paper work and IT equipment (tablet / radio / laptop etc.). Day One - Adelaide Pendelbury would fly out of his home town of Darwin on Christmas Day before heading to the Speedway Australia National Office early Boxing day. He would then pick up the WSS Truck and drive out to Speedway City by around midday before liaise with Speedway Australia’s Shane Collins and Paul Trengove and the rest of the WSS team. Then start the unpacking process of the WSS truck - all the gear that gets carted around Australia heads for the infield for the ‘bling’ effect. Trengrove sorts out the timing, truck screens, and big screen electronics before heading for the infield for the ‘set up’ of time trail peg

locations, sponsor signage, podium set up and vehicle scales Pendelbury then conducts a OH&S ‘walk’ around the track, checking the safety fence, location of safety lights to determine start line area and general condition of the racing venue. Then it’s up to the control tower to check on light operation, liaise with the venue promoter, back to the pits to liaise with the local track officials for scrutineering, locate infield and tower assistant stewards for a quick briefing and then, if time, a general walk around the pits with some hello’s to the teams. As this is the first WSS event, the WSS Officials will meet with contracted drivers and crew for a quick briefing on the expectations for the Series. Back at the WSS Truck, Collins and Pendelbury will ‘map out’ the night and conduct the driver’s briefing notes, They’ll then organise the communications, check the one way radio system, assist with the ‘grid draw’ process and then officiates at the driver’s briefing. The next four-plus hours of racing involves the actual steward duties and whilst Pendelbury prefers to just turn the safety lights on and off, it can thursdaythunder.com.au

include rule determinations, select cars to be weighed, speaking to drivers/officials, liaising with staff over track conditions and time constraints, apply penalties, maintain documentation of the event, organise the alcohol/ drug testing process, check and confirm results and point allocations and if required, facilitate any tribunals/appeals etc. At the night’s racing

Thursday Thunder Facebook

Pendelbury has to complete the necessary administrative paperwork before heading to the pits for any last minute issues, if he has time, congratulate the winners and then it’s back to the infield to tear down the WSS ‘bling’ and load it all back into the WSS truck. Pendelbury and the WSS officials are quite often one of the last trucks to leave the pits. It’s then an overnight stay back in Adelaide, recharge

communication equipment and then put their heads on their pillows by around 1:00am to 2:00am (all going well). Day Two - Murray Bridge Pendelbury will drive the WSS truck up to Murray Bridge to arrive around midday, déjà vu with unload, setup, inspection, liaison, driver’s briefing preparation, and stewarding duties and pack up process. At end of night

it’s time to head to Keith for an overnight motel stay, recharge the communication equipment and depending on time, have a debrief with the WSS team on the night’s activities and around 2:00am to 3.00am it’s normally light’s out. Day Three - Mount Gambier It’s an early start from Keith so the team can book into the accommodation in Mount Gambier before then driving the WSS Truck straight to Borderline Speedway early in the afternoon to set-up followed by another night of racing and the and pack up process. The team will stay overnight in Mount Gambier. Day 4 - No Racing After a bit of a sleep in, the team will driver to Warrnambool, their base for the next few days, before pulling the truck gear apart for the first decent clean up of the WSS gear in three nights of racing before recharging the communication equipment generally the officials team will

Thursday Thunder Facebook

get together this night for a well earned feed and a few drinks. Day 5 - Avalon The team will head from it’s Warrnambool base to arrive at Avalon around the midday mark before repeating the ‘standard’ meeting process with ‘bling’ set up and then tear down. At end of night, they’ll drive the two hours drive back to Warrnambool with lights out generally coming at around 2:00am to 3:00am. Day 6 - No Racing Today’s about cleaning up the WSS truck and gear and with some a little bit of luck, the feet will be put up and some relaxation time will be squeezed in the afternoon before heading out for New Year’s Eve activities Day 7 - Warrnambool Like most rounds, the team will arrive at the track at around midday, back to the ‘bling’ setup up and tear down process and all the activities in between.

Post Speedweek With eight rounds to go this year, it’s an early morning start early morning drive out in the WSS truck on January 2 headed towards Queensland where it all started again on January 4 with the next round. Clearly its hard work. The World Series Officials take a lot of heat in bringing the shows together over Speedweek. They, like the racers have long, long days and carry a heavy burden of getting it right and ensuring everyone gets a fair go and The “Show” that is World Series is as good as it can always be. Pendelbury and the World Series team are a well oiled machine - they need to respond instantly to problems issues and restraints that are more often than not of heir making. Good luck to the Officials and thank you for what you do in bring us WSS Speedweek.

ou’ll often hear racers say that most races are won in the workshop. What they refer to is the preparation of not only the car they will race but the huge amount of spares that may be called upon at a moment notice. Most spares are made up, trial fitted/brakes bleed, if needed, labelled and put in the truck or on the mule. Our team had a quick tour through one hauler loaded and ready to leave for Speedweek. We found:

FROM MURRAY BRIDGE TO LE MANS

Y

Paul Ryan shares his journey from Speedway to the world of Sports Cars

ou might not think there is a lot in common between Riverview Speedway and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but there is actually a lot more than you think. I’m been very lucky to travel the world doing motorsport PR for major programmes and manufacturers and chasing wins from Le Mans to Indianapolis to Monaco. My real love for the sport began behind the wheel of a Formula 500 at Murray Bridge. While I don’t get to drive any more (occasionally I get let out for a play in a road car), there are many lessons learned from turning left on dirt that still come into play today. My biggest race of the year is the 24 Hours of Le Mans – that is the biggy – sportscar racing’s Bathurst, Indy 500 and the Grand Annual Sprintcar classic all rolled into one. It’s a crazy idea – why the hell would you want to race for an entire 24 hours. It is the ultimate test of man and machine. The drivers get the easy job – they get to take lots of naps between their stints at the wheel, but the crew, the engineers and the PR people don’t get any sleep at all. But what the heck does that have to do with speedway you ask? The similarities are the same. When you first hit track and car is bad in the sportscar world, you don’t have long to solve

the problem – exactly the same as if you’re car is junk in the opening heat. The amount of effort and the will to win is exactly the same no matter what race track you are at. The budget at Le Mans – which is in the millions – is obviously a lot larger than a season of speedway. But everybody is putting in 100 per cent – no matter where you are racing. The other key bonus about racing – whether at Murray Bridge or down the Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans – is the friendships you create and the bonds you build. Thanks in part to Facebook these days, it is easy to keep in touch with my old speedway mates. Whenever we get the chance to get together the “when I was a boy” stories flow thick and fast. I’ve got the same relationship with guys I’ve worked with in motorsport around the world. They all have different passports (and sometimes very odd taste in beers) but the conversations wouldn’t feel out of place in the old pits at Riverview Speedway with a VB in your hand while eating the old famous Murray Bridge fried chicken. Next year I’m back at Le Mans running the PR and programme for Nissan’s new electric prototype – the ZEOD RC. Yes, this thing is way different from a Formula 500, but the amount of effort required to develop a car like this is just the same.

What happened last year? 2012/2013 Round Two - Murray Bridge Speedway

December 27, 2012

Dillon Does It Again!

S

outh Aussie Luke Dillon pulled off a mammoth back to back Speedweek effort in winning his second consecutive Enzed World Series Sprintcars (presented by Hogs Breath Cafe) Speedweek main event at Murray Bridge Speedway. The second generation racer ran down race leader Steven Lines in the dying laps to rocket by on the lowline and drive away with an historic victory in his Action Line marking / Hogs Breath Cafe #81 Eagle, repeating the dose from the night before at Speedway City where he led home a SA trifecta. He had to do it the hard way too, winning the B-Main earlier and coming from the eighth row of the grid in the 35 lap A-Main. “I knew we had a good car,” he smiled after the A-Main win, “Lee (Dillon) had the car right on the money and I knew if we could get some breaks in traffic we could be a real force. On that last red light stoppage we had a quick chat and it was pretty clear that we had a package that could make the bottom work.” Dillon led home Steven Lines in the Halls Haulage #3 KPC in what was the Mt. Gambier racer’s second consecutive podium result in as many nights. “I can’t say I’m not disappointed because I am,” he lamented, “we were sitting ducks out there in front and when Luke got by on the bottom I tried to make it work down there too but we didn’t have anything for him. He did a good job again tonight.” Lines may well have used up his good luck in the earlier Vortex Wings Top 8 Shootout (which he won) having completely shredded his left rear tyre on the last lap and still recording the fastest time to line up on pole position alongside James McFadden for the A-Main. Speaking of James McFadden he was simply superb in his third place finish, considering where he came from to score the result. McFadden sped the Totally Workwear #25

PAGE 20

Cool Chassis back from the rear of the field after he initially led and crashed out when Nick Lacey and Shaun Bradford tangled in front of him as he came up to lap the duo. “That’s racing I guess,” explained the remarkably buoyant defending WSS Champion, “the car was damaged in the crash but it was still pretty good after that and I really didn’t have to drive the car too differently to compensate. We salvaged a good result for the team but Luke is doing a great job at the moment and full credit to him.” In the crash that initially took McFadden out the also innocent Matt Egel was shelved with a deflated right front tyre on his Rapiti Earthworks #29 car and Shaun Bradford sustained a flat left rear tyre on his #57 Carahaul Maxim in the same incident. Victorian Nick Lacey’s #26 Video Ezy entry, like Matt Egel, was too damaged to restart. Lively Tasmanian Shaun Dobson looked to be in for a big night in the Mainline Dynolog Dynamometers #97 Downing Brothers entry but a spin in turn two saw Dobson collect the hapless Shane Stewart in the process. Dobson retired with damage and Stewart headed to the rear of the field with plenty of work ahead of him. The battles between Robbie Farr, American Kyle Hirst, David Murcott and Tim Kaeding were nail-biting to say the least throughout much of the race before Kaeding came unstuck in spectacular circumstances for the second night in a row in the Krikke Motorsport #2 Cool when he jumped the cushion and slammed the wall in turn four rolling over. David Murcott was lightning fast in the brand new Horrell Motorsport #83 Eagle and looked to be poised for a crack at the race lead before the hard charging Victorian unexpectedly crashed hard into the wall at the drop of the greens on a late race restart. Robbie Farr was again consistent for thursdaythunder.com.au

DNF’s included David Murcott (crash) Tim Kaeding (crash) Phillip March (flat left front tyre and damaged from
