Our sport is a large group of individuals seeking glory against other teams that are soon broken down to individuals. In the codes of Aussie rules, NRL or Cricket there are teams within teams and teams within clubs all pulling together. Whilst in the AFL, NRL & Cricket the brightly colored officials are the brunt of the blame for many unseen free kicks or penalties, bad decisions etc so why would we expect and different in our sport of Speedway. There is no third umpire, or instant video to check what is believed to have occurred. The lap scorers use a transponder system to track and record the cars but this also at time delivers answers not the one sort by the teams. The Officials make the call on the basis of information provided to them or seen by them. I can’t believe for one minute that there are decisions made that are intentionally made incorrectly: the fact is that sometimes the officials get it wrong. Is there a race team that has never made a incorrect decision on tyre compound, size, gearing, wheel offsets or god “forbid” a driver error where one may question the ambition and ability see-saw had been tipped the wrong way. I’ve been involved for many years and observed many broken talent shafts by drivers yet although I have been on short end of the officialdoms stick I’m happy to accept that sometimes you’re the bug and other times you are the windscreen. Brad’s Sweet Debut Victory 2013 Kings Royal victor Brad Sweet was an elated winner of the ENZED World Series Sprintcars Round Three main event at Borderline Speedway, Mt. Gambier on Saturday night. The 28 year old Californian steered the Highrace Towing GF1 chassis to a classy win in what was a race shrouded with drama and controversy as he led home Shaun Dobson in second and Darren Mollenoyux in third. Driving for Josh and Isaac Ruhs out of Broken Hill in NSW the pint sized KKR racer who will join the World of Outlaws full time in 2014 never looked greatly troubled as he deftly moved through traffic in the car in which he won the Kings Royal in Eldora earlier this year. “It certainly helps when you can drive a car that you’re used to,” he smiled from the podium, “and I can’t say enough about Josh and Isaac for giving me this opportunity. I came down here to Australia hoping to get a bit of an edge on some of my rivals back home for next year and I’m super happy I can start it off with a win
here.” Sweet’s victory in the $10,000 to win 35 lap A-Main was his first on Australian soil. Second and third placed Dobson and Mollenoyux respectively registered personal bests in terms of WSS competition. “I’m really pleased for Harry (Drosti) and my boys that we could get a podium tonight,” explained Dobson, “I gave it everything I had on the restart and we made up a few spots but it was pretty tough to get close to Brad in traffic. He was really fast tonight.” Mollenoyux too was naturally pleased. “We came here just hoping to make the A-Main, so to wind up on the podium ahead of guys like Robbie Farr and Garry Brazier is more than we could have hoped for. I really need to thank Parr Motorsports for giving me this opportunity.” The battle for fourth place behind Mollenoyux and Dobson raged between Robbie Farr and Garry Brazier for several laps with
the now West Australia domiciled Farr narrowly getting the nod over Brazier as the chequers flew. Following Brazier home in fifth was sixth placed Grant Anderson over Jamie Veal recording his best WSS result to date in 2013 with seventh in the Heytesbury Stockfeeds J&J. Eighth home was Ian Madsen followed by David Murcott in ninth, Daniel Pestka in tenth, Brad Keller in eleventh, Shane Stewart twelfth, Dylan Jenkin thirteenth and fourteenth placed Sydney WSS rookie Jackson Delamont credited as the last car running for position. The DNF’s were a who’s who of WSS competition. The first casualty was Brooke Tatnell in the KMS #2 Cool when Steven Lines made contact with the 8 times WSS champ as the pair exited turn two and made their way down the back straight two laps in to the race. Tatnell’s car suffered left front wheel and tyre damage in the impact and as the car headed towards the infield half a lap later the hapless Matt Egel

had nowhere to go and slammed his #29 Rapiti Earthworks entry into the side of Tatnell’s car. Though Egel rejoined the track shortly after the yellow lights came on for Tatnell and a seething and somewhat bewildered Egel was positioned at the rear of the field for the restart. “Because Matt had crossed the line with Brooke under greens, not under yellows (or caution lights), he was actually registered as crossing the line in last position when he rejoined the track,” explained WSS Competition Director Paul Trengove. At the restart it was again Sweet who led away but the battle pack behind him of Dillon, Lines and McFadden was about to come unstuck. Dillon, who was playing the “Joker” card which guarantees him double points in the main event, had earlier had to thrash with the help of several teams to replace the motor in his #26 Diamond Bay Motorsports entry after the Top 8 Shootout. His night was about to get worse. Attempting a slide job on James McFadden in turn three Dillon overcommitted and slammed first the cushion then the wall where he rolled over leaving Steve Lines Image: Sprintcar Zone
Steven Lines with nowhere to go but into the melee. Not 20m further into the corner McFadden had also overcommitted and crashed hard into the wall in his #1 Totally Workwear Cool. Lines managed to escape with only front wing damage but stewards deemed that he or somebody around the car had removed the damaged front wing with a tool under fundamentally a ‘closed red’ situation preventing him from being eligible to restart. Once the field restarted Brad Sweet was able to drive away with the victory despite the best efforts of Shaun Dobson who made up several positions with a bold swoop around the outside in turns one and two. Garry Brazier recorded the fastest lap of the 35 lap A-Main with an 11.472 on lap 19. At the end of three rounds Luke Dillon narrowly leads the points (as a result of using his Joker card that guaranteed him double points in tonight’s main event) as the field re-groups for Monday night’s fourth round at Avalon Raceway Lara. Did you know?
That every WSS round at 4.15pm I’m the pits all drivers must meet at the WSS truck which is the heartbeat of the series, even though these are grown men, they all still have to do roll call.
All three podium place getters at Murray Bridge had something in common - all of their cars are registered in Western Australia. NSW driver Brooke Tatnell drives a car from Bunbury WA, Steve Lines from South Australia drives a car from Albany, WA while Adelaide’s Luke Dillon from steers an entry from Bunbury, WA.
Closed, Partial or Open? Things got a little heated during Saturday’s night’s A Main when officials elected to call a ‘closed’ red light after Luke Dillon, Steve Lines and James McFadden were all involved in an incident that saw Dillon end up upside down. With a ‘Closed Red’ meaning no tools, or outside assistance, is allowed to be used Lines was told he was unable to restart as he had gained outside assistance to remove his front wing that had been damaged in the incident. At the same time McFadden was remonstrating with Race Director Shane Collins about why he was not allowed to get to work on his car when only two nights before a similar situation at Speedway City brought about a ‘Partial Red’ light situation (meaning the cars involved in the incident are allowed crews out to work on them). “The other night we had
a similar incident and they opened the gates for the crews and tonight they haven’t. It seems such a shame, especially when you’ve got three championship contenders that have been involved.” To complete the set, an ‘Open Red’ is when all crews are allowed to enter the circuit and work on their cars while the clean up from the accident occurs. This is generally used when there will be a lengthy clean-up process. Thursday Thunder News caught up with Collins and asked why the incident at Mount Gambier was kept s a ‘Closed Red’. “We were purely under time constraints, it’s unfortunate that it was top three cars in the Series that were involved, however, I’m like everyone else and want to see the best out there but sometimes it doesn’t work out.”
After Friday night’s round at Murray Bridge, the Krikke Motor Sport transporter got stuck on the side of the road with a split fuel line. They were lucky enough to find a diesel mechanic close by who helped them and they rolled into Mount Gambier at 6.30am Saturday morning. Chad Neylon and Briony Ingerson have been on the ground at every round of the World Series Sprintcars Championship gathering all the news and views for the telecasts to be shown across the country on ONE throughout the coming weeks. The essential spare in the week of Speed Just about every team in the pits will have a spare engine in the trailer, some lucky enough could have two. It’s one of those things that if you have it, you may not need it, but if you don’t, you always will. A good Sprintcar engine could cost between $25,000 and $55,000 and if there’s one or two in the transporter that’s a large investment sitting around. Throughout the Speedweek
period, engine suppliers such as KRE engines and Maxwill Motors will have at a lease motor that is on stand by for any of their customers to use. If a team has to do an engine change, it can happen in less than 20 minutes and most times the team will be assisted by many helpers from opposition teams (see feature on page 16 about Luke Dillon’s rapid engine change at Mount Gambier).
A spare engine is essential during Speedweek
Classic Calling for American Sweet Kasey Kahne Racing’s Brad Sweet has landed in Australia before having his first taste or World Series Sprintcars action on Saturday night at Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway. Sweet will campaign in the Highrace Towing entry across the next four weeks in all of the major events, including the remainder of Speedweek,
with his major focus being the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic on the final weekend of January in Warrnambool. “I’m real excited about being here in Australia, spent most of Christmas day on an aeroplane, but when I arrived I was greeted with great Aussie hospitality, I just hope I can do what the team wants from me”

For Steve Lines, the Mount Gambier round of the World Series Sprintcars Speedweek is one of only three appearances at his ‘home track’ throughout each season. The Borderline Speedway is where Lines cut his teeth on throughout his formative years aboard a Street Stock, a category in which he won the 2002/2003 Australian Championship in. With the Halls Motorsport team’s workshop being located in Mount Gambier, less than a ten minute drive from the Speedway Lines says that it’s good to spend a night at home in the middle of such a busy period of racing. “It’s to be able to have a sleep in your own bed in between such a busy period of racing,” said Lines. “Early in my career I really didn’t like racing at home too much, but now it doesn’t faze me. “It is also very good to be able to recharge and work out of our own workshop for a couple of Thursday Thunder Facebook

days before we head to Warrnambool and then the trek up North.” Lines entered the round points lead and after failing to finish he dropped to second in the standings after three rounds. PAGE 9
Through the eyes of the wives S
printcar racing is a true family sport with parents, wives, brothers, sons and daughters all being involved on different levels. Over the years, the World Series Sprintcars Championship has seen several female competitors, but there has been hundreds of wives and partners who have played integral parts in a driver’s success on the World Series trail. Two of the most heavily involved wives in World Series Sprintcar campaigns over the last decade have been Many Pittman and Bobbi Johnson supporting their husbands - Americans Daryn Pittman and Jason Johnson. Throughout Pittman’s campaigns, that saw him become the only American to claim the prestigious championship, his wife Mandy would be the chief pointscorer throughout each night of racing. Such was her accuracy, Pittman was sometimes called upon by World Series officials prior to the automated computers points system to double check the official points. Just as involved has been Johnson through her husband’s ten tours Down Under. It was not a strange sight to see Johnson pick up a scraper to clean the car, help load up the mule or like many other wives, be there at the end of the night selling the team merchandise. Thursday Thunder caught up with some of the newest crop of wives on the World Series Sprintcar trail to speak to them about what it’s like being the wife of a World Series Sprintcar star. For Michelle Jenkin, she’s back on the road

supporting her husband Dylan after a year away from World Series Sprintcars and has baby Lara (1) in tow. With Jenkin’s first night back behind the wheel coming on Thursday night at Speedway City, Michelle told Thursday Thunder she felt nervous for her husband “I felt very nervous for Dylan on Thursday night, I thought he would be many more cautious now as a Dad, but he drive real well,” said Michelle. “I used to get very nevous watching him race but now so much now as I’m a mother and so busy watching Lara all night, sometimes I even miss some of the things he does.” When asked if she loves the sport, or just loves it for her husband Michelle answered “I do love it, probably more so than Dylan, we enjoyed the year off but I’m enjoying being back on the road much more.” Kellie Keller, wife of Speedway City podium finisher Brad, told Thursday Thunder News that she sometimes feels like she’s in the car with her husband. “I get more nervous than you could imagine, thursdaythunder.com.au

I feel like I’m in the car with Brad,” said Keller. “It’s a family thing for is all, we travel together and sit together and as people around us saw at Speedway City, we cheer loud and hard. “In the Shootout (at Speedway City, he started out of P7 and I was hopeful he would just do good, but to get pole in the was a dream for him and I. There’s no doubt that I do show a lot of emotion when he races, I love it and I love what he does.” For Candice Dillon, she grew up around the speedway scene with her older brother Shane racing in the Formula 500 categroy, and she even gets behind the wheel of a go-kart when time permits. Candice, baby Taylor (15 months) and Nanna Pam Dillon are three of Luke Dillon’s biggest supporters. Until this year, both Candice and Pam have played pivotal roles in the preparation of the family-run team, however,
Kellie Keller and baby Amaya
with Luke now driving for the Diamond Bay Motorsports outfit Candice says that she now has more time to herself. “Now days things are different because he is racing for a different team, I have a lot more time to my self,” said Candice
“After these years I’ve come to the conclusion that whether I’m nervous of not it doesn’t really make a lot of difference, although I do feel especially nervous when he has a front row A Main start while Nanna Pam gets just as excited.”

Behind the scenes: Rapid ENGINE CHANGE
W
hen Luke Dillon had an engine drama in the Top Eight Shootout at Mount Gambier, the South Australian could have been mistaken for thinking his night was all but over - that was until his Diamond Bay Motorsports team, and others, went to work in the pit area. After returning to the pit from the infield, the Diamond Bay Motorsports crew immediately went about preapring for an engine change in the Western Australian Number 26 entry. No sooner had they made the decision to change the powerplant a number of members from fellow teams, predominantly from Dillon’s native South Australia, offered to lend a hand. The likes of fellow drivers Trevor Green, Luke Bowey and
Kyle Hirst got in to lend a hand, as did Ken Bowey, Lee Dillon and Troy Lawson. Within nine minutes, yes you read that correct, nine minutes the damaged engine had been removed from the car. Fifteen minutes later, the new engine had been fitted, plumbed and fired up. The total time from the moment the Dillon was pushed back to his pit bay after the Shootout to the time he returned following an engine
start trackside was an amazing 24 minutes. Compounding the importance of the engine change was the fact that Dillon had elected to play his ‘joker’ card available to each contracted driver that allows them to score double points in the main event. Unfortunately for Dillon, his A Main didn’t turn out like he had planned with him slamming into the cushion which upended his car and finished his race.

What happened last year? 2012/2013 Round Four - Avalon Raceway
December 30, 2012
Jason Johnson Wins Avalon Speedweek Night Four!
A
merican Jason Johnson became the third different winner in four nights to win a round of the 2012/2013 ENZED World Series Sprintcars Championship, presented by Hogs Breath Cafe when he annexed the 35 lap A-Main at Avalon Raceway, Lara. Johnson narrowly evaded the clutches of new series leader James McFadden throughout the feature race in front of a standing room only crowd that became very vocal after the chequered flags flew. The GT Bobcat / HM Racing Maxim was on song all night and Johnson had clearly come to avenge his defeat at the hands of McFadden the night before in Mt. Gambier as the “Ragin Cajun” sizzled across the line. “I tell you what it’s great to get a win here at Avalon, this place hasn’t always been the kindest to me in the past so it’s nice to get something positive from the experience here. It was great that they didn’t mess with the track and we got a racy surface to work with for the A-Main. I couldn’t be happier for the HM Racing guys who have been working their tails off all week to get us this result,” he proclaimed. James McFadden stalked his American arch rival throughout the race’s entirety after earlier winning the Vortex Race Products Pole Shootout and electing to start the Totally Workwear #25 COOL Chassis on the inside pole for the feature. “Jason got a jump on me on the start and I couldn’t do anything to get back by him,” mused the defending WSS Champion, “you don’t get many chances to get by him if you’re waiting for a mistake.” The crowd became very vocal when Johnson was presented the win; giving him a huge Bronx cheer and show their disappointment for some alleged infield passing of lapped cars.
PAGE 20
“You never intentionally run up on the infield,” Johnson explained at the presentation as he responded to the crowd, “you never go out there with the place of making ground by doing that. James passed me on the bottom down there once and I got back by him. I wasn’t prepared to give back the lead, that’s all there is to it.” There was nothing in it between McFadden and Johnson all night and remarkably the duo tied in qualifying for Revolution Racegear Quick Time with a 12.318s! It was only Johnson being quicker on his second lap that secured him the QT! Californian Tim Kaeding was delighted to secure his first podium finish for Krikke Motorsport claiming third place in the Toyota Parts & Accessories COOL Chassis, but not without complications. “We were good tonight,” he smiled for the first time, “it’s nice to deliver these Krikke Motorsport guys a finish we can smile about. We had radiator trouble just before the main and we had to thrash just to get out here in time for the start. I hope that tonight is the end of 2012 and the start of something positive for this team in 2013,” he told the fans. Avalon specialist Matthew Reed was on the money in the #92 Maxim running fourth at the fall of the chequers but on several occasions challenging James McFadden for second place and looking like a distinct possibility for a podium finish before Kaeding eventually edged him out. David Murcott brought the Horrell Motorsport #83 Eagle home in fifth place ahead of the always consistent Robbie Farr in the East Coast Pipeline #Q7 in sixth in what was Farr’s final Speedweek round for 2012. Albury’s Grant Anderson made his 2012/2013 WSS debut in the Wagga Mobile Cranes D&F and stormed through from the B-Main transfer

to finish a gritty seventh in the A-Main ahead of Monster Energy / Monte Motorsport pilot Shane Stewart in eighth, Stephen Bell’s Victory Lane Racegear #88 in ninth and Steven Lines recovering from a horror night with steering issues in the Hall’s Haulage KPC rounding out the top ten. Luke Dillon won the B-Main (as he did in Murray Bridge) but couldn’t repeat the Round Two win with an eventual 11th in the Action Line Marking Eagle followed by fellow South Aussie Brad Keller’s #19 Fatchen Cartage entry in 12th, Dennis Jones’ DJE Thursday Thunder Facebook
CNC Machining #17 in 13th, Michael “Pickles” Cunningham in the PRP Engineering ART Chassis in 14th, Tasmanian Mark “Mozzie” House 15th in the Statewide Turbos and Diesel Injection #14 and Peter Milnes in the Wettenhall’s #51 car credited as the last place finisher in 16th. Shaun Dobson tagged the wall in the Mainline Dynolog Dynamometers #97 Cool and rolled, whilst American Kyle Hirst’s horror run of bad luck continued with a rollover in the Highrace Towing #99 ART chassis – the same incident also knocked the front end out
of Daniel Pestka’s #27 Gawler Farm Machinery J&J and he ran out of time to effect the repairs before the restart. American legend Danny Smith was unlucky to roll the Luke Nash owned #55 Bottle O’ Maxim in his second heat and the impact unfortunately tweaked the chassis and ended the night prematurely for the Indiana veteran. Shane Stewart also inverted the Monster Energy #7 after spinning in turn one of his heat and being collected by the hapless Jake Tranter and Brad “Wazza” Warren in the process.
