The Mecca is calling

As a young man ( pre our racing days)I attended “Warrnambool” this illustrious place of pace that people spoke of almost in whispered tones as something very special, the only place that delivers” that feeling”. A place that can provide the highs of highs and the lows of lows whilst delivering four seasons of weather within the same day. With my father and brother we sat in turn three on small blue cushions with the club logo across it. So big was this event that we hadn’t been unable POSTAL ADDRESS Po Box 70 Edinburgh North DC SA 5113 EDITOR Darren Disbury EDITORIAL TEAM Brian Chalmers Danny Holden Darren Disbury Design/Layout Real Deal Media IMAGES Frank Midgley InAction Photography Pickos Photos Speedway Australia Sprintcarzone photography Steven Rice Photography Wade Aunger COPYRIGHT Material published in Thursday Thunder News is protected under the Commonwealth Copyright Act, and may not be reproduced in full or part without the express written permission of the copyright holder. to secure accommodation so we took a room at Heywood, 91 kilometres away. So the love affair had started. Racing a Formula 500 at the ‘Mecca’ was an experience that I thought at that time would never be surpassed. Little did I see the doors were but opening to the experiences of the Allansford Clay Way would deliver over the following years. The 30 year-old likeable larrikin Jeff Shepard (2001 World of Outlaws rookie of the year) raced for Disbury Family Racing in the Dave Jack Paving #5 at Warrnambool. In the process, he opened many an eye after leading the Grand Annual Classic for many laps until packing a right rear with clay that would eventually shake the car to a point of being unable to continue. Shattered at would or could have been we retreated to the motel rooms and has now become a custom we celebrated making memories and sharing moments until the early hours of the morning. When the time comes for reason to return to Warrnambool there is nothing bigger that the small motorized boat challenge at the riverside carnival. No records are kept or steward decisions required but the racing memories created at the venue are also legendary. Being lucky enough and returning many times over the years with the “Man of Steel” Jason Johnson at the wheel of the Supaloc/Jim Beam/ArmorAll backed #5, the place always delivered. From the moments of rolling into the town and seeing the Morse Bearing signs, the Black Magic shop, the Fletcher Jones outlet store and the track itself you always get “that feeling” Our team has shared in feature wins and

even World Series Sprintcars Speedweek Championships having driven away in a car that was then first prize. The lows have been delivered with rainouts and huge crashes but all have their own unique stories attached. The one thing you can count on from tonight’s racing at Warrnambool is that it will provide with memories and moments that will be talked about for years and years to come. Best Wishes Darren Disbury - Aka “The Red Dragon” thursdaythunder.com.au

Did you know?

When World Series Sprintcars Chief Steward Garry Pendlebury (pictured below) isn’t in control of 50+ raging Sprintcar drivers runs his own driver training school and is commonly known as Chewbacca.

When the Thursday Thunder News editorial team rolled into Warnambool the day after Mount Gambier up to 7 teams were working or washing cars on the Main Street of Warnambool, either out the front of motels or at the car wash. The teams included Krikke Motorsport, Matt Egel, Steven Caruso and Ricky Maiolo. It takes up to 300-plus people to run a race meeting on any one night, from track canteen, gate, security, ambulance, grid, pit crews and general helpers and to top that off you will have hundreds of pit crew as well. Robbie Farr used his Joker card to double his points in the main event at Avalon to take over the points lead, he will miss Round Five as he heads to Sydney. PAGE 8

Keller coming of age

It can’t be a fluke that for the last two World Series Speedweek’s, a kid originally from Tintinara in South Australia has taken it up to some of the highest profile Sprintcar drivers on the Australian scene. Brad Keller enjoyed his maiden World Series podium Brad Keller on Boxing Day in 2012 before continuing his good run into the 2013/2014 Championship on a limited budget compared to the bigger teams on the World Series trail. Over the opening four rounds, he has had some results that would make any Sprintcar driver happy. Keller is a raw talent, a hell of a nice guy with a passion for the sport like no other. If Keller was to have the backing like some of the big teams in this country there is no telling what this kid could do. They say to beat the best, you need to race the best and that’s certainly what Keller has shown he can do.

Tyring business

The American Racer tyres used in WSS. Image: Sprintcar Zone

On each night of World Series Sprintcar Speedweek, each driver is limited to using a maximum of two left and two right American Racer rear tyres throughout the night. The right rear tyre must be the MC2 compound or harder, while the left rear must be a minimum of a SD33 compound. Both of these tyres must be branded with WSS and purchased from the American Racer truck, that is present at each and every round of the World Series Sprintcars Championship, or an authorised Australian agent.

Given that a right rear tyre may only last 35 laps, it’s an economy rate of just under ten-miles before it’s worn out - a long way from your 20,000plus kilometres you expect from your road car. An average tyre bill for each team will be $2200 per night, now times that by five nights of Speedweek and you have a predicted tyre bill of $11,000 for the five nights of racing. See page 16 to view more a breakdown of the costs from a team competing in a round of the World Series Sprintcars Speedweek. thursdaythunder.com.au

Paying Tribute to Jon Evans Australian Speedway lost one of it’s most influential media figures last month when Jon Evans lost his battle with a long illness on November 26. ‘JE’ was admitted to intensive care in mid November and had been on a waiting list for a liver transplant for the last few months of his life. He had bravely waged a four-year fight against his illness. Hugely respected among his peers, teams and drivers, Evans had also forged a heady reputation in the United States where he was an annual visitor for Speedway and NASCAR events.

Evans, who turned 61 in October, started at Auto Action in the 1980’s and had forged a career as one of the finest reporters of his generation. He was the media man behind World Series Sprintcars for many years and also the co-founder of the Oval Express Magazine alongside Phil Jordison. On Monday night at Avalon Raceway, Evans’ closest Speedway to him, Evans was remembered during the Driver’s introductions and Avalon Raceway bosses also unveiled the new media centre at the venue with it being named in Evans’ Jon Evans’ brother David alongside the Jon Evans Media honour. Lines continues to Deck the Halls South Australian Steven Lines dominated the fourth round of the ENZED World Series Sprintcars Speedweek Series with a commanding win in front of a huge crowd at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway. Indeed the Mount Gambier born and bred throttle stomper seemed to get better the further into the 35 lap A-Main race he went, leading home Robbie Farr in second, James McFadden in third, Brad Keller fourth, Brooke Tatnell fifth, Shaun Dobson sixth, Brad Sweet seventh, Luke Dillon eighth, Shane Stewart ninth and Stephen Bell rounding out the top ten. Coming home in eleventh was Jamie Veal followed by the wounded (car) David Murcott in twelfth and John Vogels thirteenth. Lines paid tribute to his crew chief Craig Bennett in victory lane, citing the car as ‘perfect’ in its set up for the night. “The car kept getting better and better,” he smiled, “we really didn’t have to change a thing, even during the red light stoppage. I knew we had a great car because

that’s what the boys gave me. There wasn’t much I couldn’t do with it. This really makes up for our disappointment in Mt. Gambier two nights ago. I can’t thank Brian Hall and everyone associated with this team enough.” Though he’s not contracted to contest the series 2011 WSS champion Robbie Farr now leads the points as a result of his second place finish and the fact that he played his ‘joker card’ and doubled his points in the main event. He set quick time in Revolution Racegear qualifying too. “We had nothing to lose given that we’re not running the next round so we played the Joker for some fun, and in the end we wound up the points leader until January 1. It was fun tonight, the boys are getting a handle on our new car and even though we didn’t have anything for Linesy we ran strongly all night,” Farr grinned. James McFadden rued his third place finish in the Totally Workwear #1 Cool. “Don’t get me wrong, we’re fast,” he said, “but we just can’t catch

a break and get a win right now. I know it can’t be too far around the corner but it’s frustrating when we’re fast and we can’t get the job done. Steve (Lines) did a great job but we need to turn this around and get some points.” South Australian rising talent Brad Keller showed why he is one of the country’s most underrated drivers by starting on the front row alongside Lines (who won the Amadio Wines Top 8 Shootout) and holding on to second place for much of the race before eventually placing fourth. “He’s doing a great job,” complimented Steven Lines, “he’s had a killer week so far and he’s showing a lot of good car speed. I’m really proud of he’s going.” Brooke Tatnell looked to be a podium proposition around mid-race but couldn’t quite crack the defences of Keller to break through early and then had to fight James McFadden for position for several laps. The race was marred by the only red light stoppage when the vastly improved Mitch Foster (who

did a sensational job to qualify on the third row of the grid for the main event in his William Adams CAT #4) spun the car in front of the rapid Kyle Hirst in an incident that saw Hirst roll over and involve Garry Brazier, Grant Anderson and David Murcott. Hirst couldn’t restart, neither could Brazier, and Anderson and Murcott made it back out there with limited impact on the remaining laps. DNF’s for the night in the A-Main included Darren Mollenoyux (crash) Trevor Green (crash) Garry

Brazier (crash) Grant Anderson (crash) Dylan Jenkin (mechanical) Brett Milburn (mechanical) and Mitch Foster (crash). Luke Dillon charged from 15th (he won the B-Main) starting spot in the A-Main to an eventual 8th in the Diamond Bay Motorsports Maxim whilst Brad Sweet’s eventual 7th in front of Dillon was not really representative of his speed considering he’d been to the rear of the field earlier after getting caught up in a crash.

hen you arrive at the home of Cool Chassis boss, John Cooley, in Port Fairy, just on the outskirts of Warnambool in Victoria, you’re greeted by a big man with an even bigger smile. Then you’re guided to the back of the property by a very humble man nothing but happy and very proud. Cooley created Cool Chassis more than ten years ago supplying chassis to drivers in the local who were prepared to take a chance away from the standard chassis that were available while supporting an Australian manufacturer Now, as he prepares his 383 chassis for delivery, Cooley is about to take on one of his biggest challenges since the welds cooled on the first chassis that was wheeled out the Cool Chassis’ workshop. Standing next to a pair of two brand new cars ready for shipping to the USA for Australian Sprintcar champion James McFadden, it was hard not to notice the smile on the face of this larger than life character, as these two cars were off to the workshop of Joe Gearte, one of Americas highest profile engine builders and the owner of the 3G Sprintcar team that McFadden will be driving for throughout 2014.

PAGE 14

Another thing Cooley is very proud of is his Krikke Motor Sport ‘Wall of Fame’ dedicated to the Krikke Motor Sport championship winning team and all the titles, championships and blue ribbon events that the Krikke team have secured while campaigning the Cool Chassis product. While standing alongside chassis number 383 Cooley tells me he has now exported cars into four countries with his largest market being Australia. He also reflected on the time it has taken him to actually catch up on the orders from teams across the world to the point where he has two cars in stock waiting for the next Cool customer to stroll in the door. After a tour of the workshop, summing up John Cooley is quite easy! He is a simple man,who loves simple things but nothing more so than his Sprintcar Racing. thursdaythunder.com.au

Behind the scenes: WHAT A NIGHT COSTS

W

orld Series Sprintcar teams line up to put on a show for the fans each night of Speedweek and battle for the honour of being the victor. While many teams are left the count the cost of accidents or engine dramas throughout Speedweek, but what does it really cost for a night of racing? Thursday Thunder found out. After speaking with several teams we discovered that a night of racing, without any significant damage would cost an average team up to $6,200. This works out to approximately $100 per racing lap, or $500 per racing minute and this doesn’t incorporate the cost of travelling to the venue, or the infrastructure that sits idol in the pit area. The average race day for a team begins at 9am, depending on what happened the night before it’s either washing the car before

preparing for the next night of racing, or it’s hitting the road and getting set for the next night of racing. Generally, a race day will consist of no less that 16 hours with a finish time of 1am. It’s certainly not your average nine-to-five job, and you must be dedicated and well supported to attempt to be a part of this sport. So what are some of the costs incurred by the teams while on the road during World Series Sprintcars Speedweek include visiting a laundromat to wash clothing - both racing

attire and general clothing, paying for the driver, crew and sponsors to get into the venue - which depending on the number of sponsors can be up to $500. There’s also the cost of nominating to compete, meals and drinks for the crew, race fuel, accommodation, wear and tear on the machinery along with the cost of washing the race car and other associated equipment at a car wash each night after racing.

efending WSS champion James McFadden was too good for his rivals wrapping up the final ENZED WSS Speedweek (presented by Hogs Breath Cafe) night of competition in front of an excellent crowd that braved wintry conditions at Premier Speedway Warrnambool The Totally Workwear #25 Cool chassis was wielded to maximum result for the Queensland based Northern Territorian as he sped away from his rivals to win as he pleased in the 35 lap A-Main, in the process also claiming the Speedweek Title from Luke Dillon. “The car was fast in the (Vortex Race Products Top 8) Shootout,” smiled James on the podium, “and when we got by Kyle in the A-Main I was pretty sure we had the car speed to go on with the job.” It’s been a very successful campaign for McFadden, with two wins paying $10,000 each (Mt. Gambier and Warrnambool) and a $5000 bonus for being Speedweek champion he netted a cool $25,000 plus. “Yeah it’s been a good week,” smiled car owner Scott Milling, “he did a great job as always.” Early leader in the Warrnambool main event Kyle Hirst was an eventual second place at the fall of the chequers ahead of Daniel Pestka in third, Shane Stewart in fourth and David Murcott rounding out the top five. “I haven’t seen much of James racing before this week but he’s very very good. When he went by me on the bottom I knew I was going to have a difficult time getting back by,” admitted Hirst, “so I’m just really pleased for the Ruhs boys and grateful for this opportunity to race with everyone in these World Series deals. They’re really neat.” South Aussie rising star Daniel Pestka was thrilled with his career best third place finish. “Before the night I thought I’d be happy just

PAGE 24

to roll the car back into the hauler without any damage at the end of the racing and leave for Brisbane, but this is definitely a huge bonus.” Grant Anderson ran a strong sixth ahead of Luke Dillon who charged from the rear of the field after being caught up in a spectacular fourcar crash that took out Jason Johnson, Stephen Bell and Darren Mollenoyux in turn three of the opening lap. Mollenoyux and Johnson came together into turn three with Johnson flipping the HM Maxim high into the air and Stephen Bell rolling over against the wall as he contacted with Mollenoyux. Dillon replaced the front wing and top wing on the #81 Action Line marking Eagle and restarted from the rear before charging back through the field with little in the way of brakes. Taylor Milling recorded a career best 8th place finish in the TWW #25 ahead of fellow West Aussie Trent Pigdon whose 9th place result was also his best WSS result as a contracted driver. Tenth place home was Matthew Reed, ahead of John Vogels and Ashley Scott as the last running cars. Drivers not able to finish the main event included Steven Lines (flat left rear tyre) Tim Kaeding (engine problems) Ricky Maiolo (mechanical), Danny Smith (rollover when the steering arm broke) Matt Egel (mechanical) Jason Johnson (rollover) Stephen Bell (rollover) and Darren Mollenoyux (crash). Earlier in the night Luke Dillon was the Revolution Racegear Quick Time award winner with a sizzling 10.455s lap. James McFadden won the Vortex Gold Shootout to score the pole position for the 35 lap A-Main alongside Californian wildcard Kyle Hirst. Several drivers had devastating bad luck on the night including Shaun Bradford who suffered a combination of engine woes (he didn’t even thursdaythunder.com.au

James McFadden after claiming the 2012/13 World Series Sprintcars Speedweek crown

record a qualifying lap) flat tyres and steering box issues. Brad Keller got caught up in a crash in his heat, which unfortunately tweaked his Thursday Thunder Facebook

chassis and ended the night prematurely, and Carl Ludeman withdrew after rear end issues in the KFC car. Nick Lacey rode out a big

rollover in the #26 Video Ezy car as did West Aussie youngster Todd Waddell and both were unable to return to competition later in the night. PAGE 25
