ABOUT THUY MICHELLE
as a child of the bayou, i remember trekking through the mud alongside the cypresses and weeping willows...the musky smell of the swamp still lingers in the back of my mind, as i recall the eerie sensation of the wind dropping, the air cooling and time dissipating into a still quietness. the forest, its trees and the space between all that existed was my home. to enter into a natural environment is to accept that it exists within its own timeline and must be perceived in a different light. as a designer i hope to harvest new experiences and change the way our natural environment is seen. i hope to encourage others to notice the every day, pursue beauty, recognize the nonsensical and find the things that have been forgotten. DESIGN The design focuses on improving site access, enhancing the quality of life and creating a unique identity/ experience in San Pedro. The Blasted Lands consist of a series of different areas that are easily accessible by both vehicles and pedestrians. There are a network of roads that travel throughout each area and there is a boardwalk | hiking trail that circulates the site as well. The Isle Apartments and the Pass Promenade are aspects that seek to improve the quality of life within the area. With these is the introduction of new affordable housing minutes away from everything that one needs

CABINS
the city has provided an architectural development package of retreat facilities. the package includes minimum building footprint areas for cabins, lodge, dining, and conference center uses. from a construction cost perspective the client prefer all buildings to be slab on grade construction. However the client also recognizes the site has steep slopes, and that the use of retaining walls in the buildings and on site can reduce overall grading and thus protect more of the natural site undisturbed.

This studio explored the linked subjects of wine making and place making. This project investigated the Central Coast’s wine industry and the wine country experience. Located in Paso Robles, the Barton Family has asked us to develop a master plan to re-envision their faltering business, Grey Wolf Cellars by creating a design vision and programming a qualitative experience.
A FUNKY SPACE REINCARNATED
master plan @ GREY WOLF WINERY, PASO ROBLES, CALIFORNIA

ORIGINS OF THE GREY WOLF Based on Native American Mythology, there once was a man known as Ma’una, the Earth Maker. He created the plants, animals and finally “the two-legged walkers”. Of the animals lived the Grey Wolf, whom was the last wolf to be left on earth as the others faded into the spiritual world. The Grey Wolf was given the title and role as the protector and guardian of humanity.
REINCARNATION Assuming the role of the Grey Wolf, the Barton family is seen as those who have been reincarnated to provide for the good and happiness of the humans that enter upon their grounds. To further understand the needs of humanity, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs was adopted as a concept and design inspiration.
DESIGN The design consists of a series of triangles and polygons that focuses on satisfying the first three levels of needs: physiological, safety and love. Grey Wolf Winery provides for the physiological demands with its delicious wine and expansive fields of produce. Each space within the design is surrounded and enclosed by either low stonewalls, or vegetated areas creating a feeling of protectiveness. By doing this each space is experienced with intimacy between the users and visitors. The overall design hopes to bring people together in ways that allows for the harvesting of happiness.

This course focused on understanding the use of GIS in landscape architecture on an introductory level. Data is collected, read, understood and displayed through analytical visualization. The following project utilizes site conditions, environmental importance and urban development as part of a feasibility study.
INTRODUCTION The San Joaquin Kit Fox is one of the most endangered animals in California. These tiny, discrete animals are the size of a house cat, with large ears and a long bushy tail. Their population has been rapidly declining to the point of non-existence since the 1930s, when their natural habitats transformed into agricultural fields and urban development. The kit fox were originally found throughout the San Joaquin Valley in Central California, but today they have been sparsely spotted along the edges of the valley. Kit foxes natural habitat consists mainly of grasslands, meadows and areas vegetated with scattered low-lying shrubs and loose soils for their denning needs. They are primarily active at night and their diet consists of kangaroo rats and other small rodents such as ground squirrels, birds and insects. In 1967, the kit fox was listed as a federally endangered species due to habitat loss and fragmentation. Human have also contributed to their endangerment through vehicular accidents, shootings, trapping and poisoning. A feasibility study has been done to seek potential habitat for the kit foxes within San Luis Obispo County. Habitat conditions, spatial relationships to roads and human developments, as well as other circumstances have been considered and analyzed through the use of data collection and GIS to create potential areas of recovery.

GEOPROCESSING PLAN
By starting with habitat selection and finding areas of shrubby, deciduous forest vegetation, I have located suitable habitat for the foxes. However, they only thrive in certain types of soils. So within the selected habitat, I located areas that have loose and sandy soils. The foxes chances of survival are higher further away from certain types of development and highways. My next condition was to find all areas of agriculture and urban development to avoid. From there the selected habitat must be at least a mile away from those zoning areas, as well as a half mile away from any major highway and roads. This narrowed my selection quite a bit, but in order for any species to thrive, there must be adequate space. My last deciding factor was the sizes of these potential areas. I decided that in order to provide a safe habitat and an educational platform, these sanctuaries must be 100 Acres or larger. This resulted in my three potential sites, all discovered through the GIS selection process using real and relevant data.

This map contains the vegetative areas that are suitable for kit fox habitat. Scrub and deciduous forest were selected by attribute from the data file of San Luis Obispo’s land cover. This map is also showing areas of loose and sandy soils, in which kit foxes need. They are a species that burrow underground to build their dens. These aspects of soil were selected by soil type and drainage grade through the select by attributes feature. Additionally, zoning was taken into consideration. Individual parcels of urban development, agricultural lands and residential was selected to indicate areas to avoid.
This map highlights the differing slopes within San Luis Obispo County. The kit foxes prefer to trek on terrain that is no steeper than 5%. Utilizing the DEM file and going through the Spatial Analyst tools, I was able to map out the slopes, but also define the values I was specifically looking for. The yellow patches was the resulting areas from an intersection between the layers in the previous map. These locations are areas within the suitable vegetative habitat with the correct soil types. These areas are also outside of urban development, agricultural lands and residential tracks.
MAP PROGRESSIONS
This map takes the selected suitable areas and correlates it with major highways and roads, along with defining areas of adequate size for a healthy and promising kit fox sanctuary. The areas in orange are within a half mile from the highway providing a decent amount of distance to prevent vehicular accidents, but also not too far from the road, since a lot of kit foxes like to build their dens under the roads in drainage pipes and such. The final condition was sizing of the habitat. I decided that 100 Acres was adequate to provide a sanctuary for the kit foxes along with developing a natural park for educational purposes. These areas are highlighted in pink.

These areas are the most suitable of the three because they are the furthest from any development and the furthest from the highway. The surrounding area contains rugged terrain, but there is a passage way that can become a safe accessible corridor for the kit foxes. These areas also contains a series of potential sites that are flat and relatively larger in size. This may be a progression for the kit foxes to expand and inhabit multiple locations within the same area.
