EDITORIAL WITH SNARD ALEXANDER ‘Perseverance’; this word is so commonly used in the halls of schools and work places alike that it has become stretched in our minds as a word that just means, ‘continue’. So what does it really mean? What then?! What does it mean to continue in the face of all your words, your actions, your thoughts being twisted to fit and suit the purpose of your adversary, your wall? It means that no matter what you come against, it can be broken and gotten past, and it can be defeated. So why then is this concept so difficult to grasp by so many believing that their obstacles are too great to overcome? Why do so many fail to achieve their dream of becoming millionaires or simply becoming great in their respective societies? The answer is simple; many see a wall for what it is, a wall, when infact, millionaires and those who are successful see it as just a collection of bricks. In the words of Will Smith, “you don’t set out to build a wall... I will lay this brick as perfectly as a brick can be laid and eventually you’ll have a wall.” You can’t be a leader of a country without knowing how to lead yourself. You can’t love someone without first loving yourself or make a million a day without first making 100,000’s a year. Perseverance is taking one step forward despite the wall, and breaking it down brick by brick. No matter the difficulty, any wall can be overcome. But you need to enjoy the journey to the dream. Understand it is a process and it will take time but as long as you keep pushing. It will be done.

Jounen kweyol lunch

When your castle comes crumbling down, And your dam breaks, Flooding your mind with fear, Do not be afraid of what is to come. You are a tower of tolerance. A pillar of peace, Standing tall amid the storm. You have been beaten down so many times That it’s a wonder you’re still breathing. Listen to the counsel of those who went before you, For they have the most experience with plot twists and curve balls. Their judgement may scare you, But do not let it scar you. You are so much more than the rubble at your feet, So much more than the destruction you’ve seen. You are a fighter, And you can keep going. Even if you fall down one hundred times, Stand up one hundred and one. Keep trying, No matter how many failures you’ve left in your wake. Every day is your lucky day, Your chosen day to be amazing. You are worth the tears and the harsh words and the battle wounds. They brought you to where you are today. You are a soldier, Loyal to only your own cause. Keep fighting. The war is almost over. The sun is coming up. Today is your Allelujah.

Amy Stephen The strength of a woman 2013 carnival queen winner Amy Stephen Article Strength is defined as the ability to “withstand great force or pressure” not just the ability to lift heavy loads or perform physically demanding tasks. It’s difficult at times to see your own strength because often times, it is exuded when we are too deep into following our dreams or even simply what we feel to be our calling. Strength is as much a mental thing as it is physical. If you were asked if you were a strong woman what would you respond? Is that something you even aspire to be? Most times when you think of a strong man you naturally think physical strength, but a strong woman is characterized by her mentality and strong sense of self. Amy Stephen is a 20 year old woman from Anse-la -Raye, St.Lucia. She is well-known in her community, learning the importance of getting involved even before she was old enough to understand the value it would have for her. As a baby, Amy’s mother would carry Amy along to choir practise with her. A habit that would start Amy off on a long list of community involvement and great achievements. Under the guidance of Petronilla Deterville, Amy became a part of Sicilian Rays. She was also a member of the Charles Cadet Youth Orchestra, exemplifying her talent for music. As a member of Youth SPAC (Youth Studying Performing Arts & Culture), she shows off another talent of hers in the field of drama. She was also a member of Youth Parliament making her talents even more well-rounded. Currently she is a teacher at the St. Joseph’s Convent teaching English and Theatre Arts; going into the classroom with a different mentality. Her intention is to learn something from the students she teaches rather than the other way around showing her unique take on life. These are simply some of the things Amy has been involved with. She became even more wellknown during her days at Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School (LHCSS) where she worked with the school choir and helped them take thevictoryon two separate occasionsin school choir competitions. She was also crowned Ms. LHCSS in 2005 starting out her pageantry years. She is much more well-known now for taking the Crown at Carnival Queen Show, a remarkable feat which does not even begin to capture Amy’s full talents. If you were to stop and think of your own life, what would be your proudest moment? As a mentally strong individual, often enough our proudest moments are not what others would consider to be our biggest accomplishments. Amy is a free-spirit at heart and, as a free-spirit, that feeling of being liberated and being in complete control is how she gains her personal strength. Amy noted the times in her life when she first learnt to ride a bike and also when she learnt how to swim as her proudest moments. These accomplishments allowed her that feeling of being free. She could ride her bike for hours like a bird in flight, no limitations to hold her back. Such freedom is strength because you are in control. Withstanding great pressure is definitely something Amy has had to deal with in life. Adding a label to something can be a simple task but when you let that label define the thing it can sometimes hold it back from its true potential. Amy, as a resident of the fishing community of Anse-laRaye knows the talents her community has and can produce.

Yet still many people look at what she has been able to accomplish and begin to doubt that she is from a community that is sometimes labelled as “small” and a place where nothing good can come from. To get past these labels Amy proposes that we use her own techniques of setting realistic standards for yourself. These standards give you something to strive towards and when they are realistic they become something you won’t give up on halfway because you can see yourself actually achieving it and focus your attention on reaching it. Remember strength is as much mental as it is physical so take control of how you think. When Amy was asked if she thinks of herself as a strong woman, she thought for a good while and responded that she thinks of herself as a woman who embraces her weaknesses and vulnerabilities and uses them to find her strength to continue life. Superwoman and Wonderwoman, both can be described as strong women but in thinking of them as that, Amy tries to remind herself that she is “a work in progress” which is where her strength comes from. “I am on a journey” says Amy, which is something we could all note. Strength is not something we get overnight and stays with us for the rest of our lives. We constantly have to work at it and remind ourselves. We must think ahead and aspire to get somewhere without allowing labels or other people to hold us back. Amy takes part in so much and is still taking on so much as a teacher, and currently getting ready to take part in Ms. Carival in St.Vincent, understanding the importance of marketing yourself and getting your name and your talents out there for people to see what you are capable of. “Our greatest moments are when we can connect with people” according to Amy, and the more connections we make, the more we grow as people, building our strengths. Are you also a work in progress like Amy?
