bY JENELLE Lewis St. JOSEPH’S CONVENT STUDENT WHY WON’T YOU ANSWER I sent you a message saying, ‘Hey’ half an hour ago.Maybe you’re just busy, I think. Or maybe I made you feel weird and uncomfortable. Maybe you got tired of me. Or, you probably just have a lot of other people talking to you. Maybe our last conversation scared you half to death. I need some explanation. I feel like a bad memory you’re struggling to repress, A rash you’d rather hide, A bad hair day you can slip beneath a cap. It’s been two hours. I don’t know if I should try again. Honestly, being ignored hurts more than being rejected. Is this how those pestering guys I never answer feel, Alone, unimportant and uncared for? I always tried to be the friend you wanted, Or maybe the friend I needed but never got. I don’t want to bother you any longer. So I’ll just close the chat like it never happened. The next morning I awake to find you said, “Hey, I wasn’t home last night, sorry about that.” Maybe I really am too clingy.

Arthur & subance SIB - sOCA IN BLACK 2014 PITON SOCA STARS & GROOVY MONACH WINNERS
Every year the Carnival season rolls in with an array of Soca and Calypso music filling up our radio stations, parties and family gatherings. We look forward to hearing the next big hit that will get us pumped up to jam if not down the road at least on the bus as we head to and from work. This season, this atmosphere, the hype and the fans- Soca music is what these two men live for. Stage name Arthur, this year he is well known for his victory at the Groovy Soca 2014 competition. Beginning his professional career with the Matrix band, Arthur has expanded his reaches from originally singing cover songs to writing his own Soca songs and establishing a name for himself in the Soca music industry. Looking back and contemplating how different people end up doing the things they do, passion is usually seen at the heart of the reason. And this is no different for the winner of the 2014 Piton Soca stars competition. Going by the stage name Subance, a name he got since Primary School, the passion he held for Soca music extended from his childhood days till now. Performing and competing is not an easy feat both Artists explain. Yet, it is the passion and love of music and what they do that keeps them at it each year. Arthur explains that he is not an artist that is focused solely on competition. He loves the music and believes that despite us having a specific Carnival season where we play Soca music, our music needs to extend beyond our national shores and branch out across the seas and extend beyond just the Carnival season. Our Carnival season, seen to us as a time to let loose and enjoy our culture, is a time of pressure for these two artists. The fight to create that one song that everyone would fall in love with is no easy thing to do. Subance exclaims that it is a headache to produce a song that would be popular enough and then maintain that stage personality and charisma as you perform on stage for thousands of people. For Arthur who works non-stop with his team, EvaLucian, making all this happen does not wait till the season actually starts. Even before the season starts, our Soca artists are working hard to ensure they have a few songs to send out early for our enjoyment. Then when it comes to the big day, pressure is on the hardest at that point as the whole season of work and effort builds up to that last performance. Neither of these two artists goes into this competition expecting victory which is something we could all take example of. Up on that stage both Artists aim is to give it their best and go all out. The rest took care of itself and clearly hard work paid off.

So apart from winning, what do these two men get out of performing their heart out on stage? “Love, support and positive energy” is what Arthur enjoys most about being a part of this aspect of the music business. That feeling of knowing that your music is able to touch someone else’s life and help them to enjoy themselves is what he truly enjoys. As for Subance, he states that it is not all about singing. It is also about entertaining your fans. Getting up on that stage and being able to entertain all of St. Lucia and the people that support you is what being a part of the Music industry is all about according to Subance. A carnival without Soca music just wouldn’t be a proper Carnival, and knowing the effort Artists like these two put into producing these songs makes it that much sweeter. So whether you’re grooving up to Arthur’s winning song, “Numb”, or wining up to Subance’s “Sit dong and bubble” take pleasure knowing that this song was produced especially to make people like you enjoy yourself. And to all aspiring Artists: “You can be who you wanna be with hard work n dedication” -Subance “Stay focussed, disciplined and let your passion guide you. It is important to not be detracted by the negative forces and to remain positive regardless what the circumstances may be. All will happen in time.” -Arthur
