SALCC TUITION

INCREASE? T he current situation at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College is definitely one needful of

an intervention by stakeholders. Following the untimely adjustment of the fee structure (a mere two weeks away from registration) operations at the college are now viewed quite sceptically by faculty and students alike with the majority claiming they are still unaware of the reason for the fee increase. This concern fuelled by a plethora of issues identified by the student body, jolted the National Students’ Council into a campaign to apply pressure on the management at the college. The relentless attitude of the NSC won them the opportunity to meet with officials at the college along with the SALCC students’ council reps to sit and discuss the issue at hand. Surprisingly the plight of the NSC was met with great remorse by the officials as they acknowledged the fact that the notice was indeed very late. Nevertheless the two parties came to terms of agreement which promised for better collaboration between the students’ council and the board, a more stringent procedure in dealing with future fee adjustments and arrangements to help students with difficulty covering the cost. Consequently the NSC’s campaign sparked a greater willingness from the divisions at the college to express their concerns. However it was the Division of Arts, Science and General Studies which led out in a protest march, generating hype around the college on the morning of Monday 14th of September.

National School Council This protest however focused more on the issues affecting students at that division rather than the fee increase previously highlighted by the NSC. Students displayed placards identifying issues with the lack of furniture in classrooms, poor communication between staff and students and the aged infrastructure at the school just to name a few. As a result of this demonstration, college officials pledged to address the furniture issue by placing additional tablet desks in classrooms by the end of this week and the following one. Furthermore to facilitate the dissemination of information from staff to students, more notice boards will be situated in critical areas at DASGS so that students can refer to these instead of the one at CEHI. The National Students’ Council is extremely elated that the college has respected the urgency of these problems and a timeline is set to address them in order to prevent any further action by the student force. In the coming weeks a team of student representatives will host meetings throughout the college to inform students of the recent changes and to identify additional issues. 4

Written In Sand I write it down; ‘Family.’ The waves lap violently at the shoreline And erase all traces of it’s existence. Just like that Christmas Eve when Mother couldn’t come home All because she’d picked over time at the hotel. Higher up, I write ‘Equality.’ The hungry ocean that carried my people to this island devoured it just as quickly. The idea of equality vanished from my mind as I look down the beach, Feeling so separated from the unspoken ‘Tourist Side.’ Frantically, I write down ‘Love’ and ‘Happiness’ But each letter is stolen as soon as it’s written. The very beach where I spoke my first words, The very beach where I heard a manager tell my mother, “Hold your tongue because the guest is always right.” This very beach, Now stealing the words I want to shout, Pulling them into the ocean along with the White Man’s waste. Isn’t that what they had always said we were worth? Isn’t that what they told us ended on August 1st, 1838, The day we were emancipated from chains, But still beached slaves in our hearts.
