HEALTHCARE THW’s successful history in acute healthcare projects spans a field that exceeds over 1-Billion Square Feet. THW provides our client-health systems with innovative space and operational planning, in addition to innovative architectural and environmental design solutions for what we recognize as an already over-burdened healthcare delivery system. At THW, we understand the impacts which emanate from the growing demands faced by all healthcare systems seeking to meet the needs of a larger population with the increasingly complex layering of demographics and psychometrics. Our success has been witnessed as a direct result of our ability to assist healthcare systems in assessing their proposed and existing physical plants with a philosophy that not every new and existing condition requires the same solution, but rather, solutions that are specific to the creation of pathways that allow for effective operations between the care-giver and the patient-guest. We encourage a process that embraces our client’s vision with that of fiscal responsibility and environmental sustainability, internally and externally. We take great pride in this method of approach, as it stands as the benchmark for what we do best, thus invoking the combined influences of our land planning, interior design and architecture. Hence, through the execution of our work in concert with our clients, we have discovered that the greatest achievements are made evident in how clinical functions and operations have been improved via our understanding of our client’s newly-developed or existing operational conditions. This creates an alignment of goals and actions that result in improved and enhanced patient-guest services, reduced functional and physical waste, improved staff and physician satisfaction, improvements in infection control, reduced readmissions, and care for the environment. Our team brings unique processes and tools that will help create the clinical environment most appropriate in service to their patient-guests, as well as to the operational costs of the healthcare system. Our team uses tools that ultimately are intended to improve communication and decision-making with our clients. Many of these tools leverage technology to allow our teams to collaborate in sophisticated ways while minimizing the time required to accomplish the tasks at hand. Our interactive and virtual/augmented reality modeling of clinical operations, benchmarking, space utilization, staffing, cost, and technology assures the most effective use of space and clinical resources, as well as creates a future strategy that helps account for growth, redistribution, and/or consolidation.
Target areas where THW serves as a unique part of the equation in meeting our clients needs:
| The critical nature of readmissions--the delivery of care could be proven to be better | Healthcare industry is becoming increasingly consumer-driven | Patient satisfaction and the patient experience: healthcare organizations must not only provide quality care but also surpass patient expectations | Patient experience and emotional engagement are increasingly influential factors in determining healthcare providers’ financial success | Fostering positive emotional connections (DESIGN) with patients and generating strong patient engagement require employee talent and teamwork | Facilities must also meet staff’s basic needs in order for them to engage patients and meet patient demands.
To this end, watching, studying and applying are the “action principles” by which THW binds together the goals of performance, efficiency and patient satisfaction for our clients. Let us show you how we do it!

Metropolitan Methodist Hospital
HOSPITAL EXPANSION
San Antonio, Texas
Client: Methodist Healthcare/HCA Services Provided: Healthcare Planning/Programming, Master Planning and Land Planning Size: 28,000 SF
Metropolitan Methodist Hospital is a 330-bed hospital located in downtown San Antonio. As is fairly common with urban hospitals, the campus consists of a number of different buildings, with access points from multiple streets, and internal connections at various points throughout the facility. Wayfinding is not intuitive, parking is spread out, and patient waiting areas are limited and scattered. The focus of this project is the improvement of overall wayfinding and more direct access to clinical services throughout the existing facility. Outside of clinical services, wayfinding is one the most critical aspects of space planning and construction for medical facilities. This project will include a completely new infill of approximately 28,000 SF of current outdoor space between the existing patient tower and the existing clinical services tower. The infill will house an information desk, cafÊ, children’s play area, public rest rooms, the emergency department registration, and most importantly, a strong internal connection tying all existing services together and providing a single entry point for the facility.

INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY LAB Client: Methodist Healthcare/HCA Services Provided: Healthcare Planning/Programming, Architecture, Interior Design Size: 1,696 SF
Spawned from the need to recruit new talent for HCA’s “city center hospital” located in downtown San Antonio, this project entailed the complete demolition and rebuilding of the hospital’s existing 20-year-old cath lab into a new Interventional Radiology (IR) Lab. The project was fast-tracked and executed via the design-build delivery method, demanding the coordination of all systems from HVAC to the incorporation of smart technology required by the most advanced systems in interventional medicine. THW Design played a critical role in fostering the relationship with the state and local jurisdictional authorities, most strategically, that of the state health regulatory commission which called for constant and routine measures of contact to ensure the meeting of a tight deadline. The schedule coordination also included careful oversight by THW Design on fabrication, delivery and installation of the new IR equipment. The first patients were seen on schedule, just two days prior to the Christmas holiday.

HELICOPTER PAD Client: Methodist Healthcare/HCA Services Provided: Healthcare Planning/Programming, Architecture
With this HCA hospital becoming the flagship hospital quoined as the “city center hospital” for downtown San Antonio, this called on the hospital to spring forward in providing ICU patient services. This need came from closure of surrounding ICU Adult Services from local operators and thus required HCA to create its first emergency life-flight heliport. The project was fast-tracked and executed via the design-build delivery method, demanding the coordination by THW Design of FAA and City of San Antonio flight controls protocols. THW played a critical role in fostering the relationship with the state and local jurisdictional authorities, most strategically, that of the state health regulatory commission which called for constant and routine measures of contact to ensure the meeting of a tight deadline. Through THW’s efforts in design, project control and oversight, HCA was able to celebrate a grand opening flight in accordance with its promise to the City leaders and the leadership of partner hospitals across South Central Texas.

HEALTHCARE CAMPUS Planning
A well-planned healthcare campus supports the healing process at the outset. Current campus design trends incorporate all levels of care with accommodations for patients, family, healthcare providers and staff. As Landscape Architects, THW blends the elements of nature with the built environment to create sustainable living spaces. We study the site, taking into account natural elements such as sound, light, shade, wind, texture, form, and balance, as the campus should respect and be harmonious with the natural resources of the site. By understanding the site’s characteristics and limitations, THW Land Planning implements the vision of our clients, making architecture and land one. Wayfinding is critical in providing a good, first impression of the healthcare facility to the patient and family. Clear directional signage, access to parking areas, appropriate landscaping, and welcoming pedestrian walkways are all part of a cohesive campus. Strong wayfinding improves organization outreach, eases family stress, helps patient flow, and aids emergency management. THW helps our clients achieve their planning and wayfinding goals by taking into account every facility’s unique history, configuration, size and surrounding community. THW’s Land Planning department works hand in hand with our Architecture and Interior Design departments to ensure we consider the width and breadth of the opportunities afforded by the existing community and its environs. We work closely with civil engineers and all other disciplines to provide creative, technically appropriate, cost effective, and environmentally responsible designs.
Medina Regional Hospital Hondo, Texas
HEALTHCARE Client: Medina Healthcare System Services Provided: Healthtcare Planning/Programming, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design Size: 15,600 SF
A regional hospital system was looking to develop a prototypical micro-hospital that would meet the healthcare needs of smaller communities that were lacking the services of a true, acute care hospital. The program includes five inpatient beds, five emergency department exam rooms (plus a 250 SF treatment room), an imaging department, pharmacy, food service and cafĂŠ. As designed, the building is approximately 20,000 SF, and meets the state licensing requirements for an in-patient, acute care hospital, but the layout has been organized specifically to support flexibility and expansion, depending on location or community needs.
Asbury Methodist Village Gaithersburg, Maryland
WILSON HEALTHCARE CENTER Client: Asbury Methodist Village Services Provided: Architecture and Interior Design Size: 6,726 SF
The goal was to renovate the lobby and create a welcoming atmosphere -- a functioning, yet calm, nurturing, healing place where patients and guests can gather and spend time together. The existing lobby reception area was a series of smaller spaces that were outdated and unused. It was, essentially, a pass-through space which felt disconnected from the Wellness Center. Opening the lobby space introduced daylight, and the added Wellness Café encourages lounging, socialization and visiting. The design incorporated natural patterns, colors, and textures found in nature, balanced with materials appropriate for a healthcare setting: an illuminated “green wall”, soft curves, wood and stone textures. A new café (juice and coffee bar) venue was added adjacent to the lobby with an electric fireplace and soft seating groups to encourage socialization and animate the lobby.
Charles E. Smith Rockville, MD
PHYSICAL THERAPY | REHABILITATION CENTER Client: Charles E. Smith Life Communities Services Provided: Architecture, Land Planning, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, Purchasing Completion: 10,332 SF
The objective was to improve the functionality of the facility and enhance residential programs and services through repositioning and renovation projects. THW understands the strong association between the patients’ perceived safety and the community’s abilities to assist in their rehabilitation needs. It was particularly important that the physical environment encouraged innovative and fully interactive programs that will support the dignity of the residents and the changes and challenges they may face. For example, by infusing a socialization opportunity with the life stations, the individuals are encouraged to practice tasks related to banking, shopping, and getting in and out of a car, just to name a few. There is also an active daily living apartment unit with kitchen, bedroom and bath to execute therapy exercise. A few steps away is rehabilitation equipment ranging from the Biodex Unweighing System to the Omni Cycle. The design goal was to create a physical and occupational therapy venue that supports and encourages the residents’ active participation in achieving a sense of well-being.

MICROHOSPITAL PROTOTYPE
Microhospital Prototype
Client: Emergency Service Partners
State wide, Texas
Services Provided: Programming and Master Planning, Architecture, Land Planning, Landscape Architecture and Interior Design
The task was to develop a prototypical microhospital that would meet the healthcare needs of smaller communities lacking the services of a true, acute-care hospital. The footprint of the facility would include only the departments required by the Texas Department of State Health Services to be licensed as an out-patient hospital, but the layout would be organized specifically to support the flexibility and expansion necessary to house additional services, like skilled nursing, nuclear medicine, mental heatlh, surgical, etc. At approximately 20,000 sf, the basic program of the single-story facility would include five inpatient beds, each with a private bathroom, a central teaming station, five emergency department exam rooms (plus a 250 sf treatment room), an imaging department (including a CT scan and ultrasound rooms), pharmacy, food service, and cafĂŠ with an outdoor terrace. The services are located within the hospital to accommodate facility expansion as population, technology, and community needs evolve. The micro-hospital, though small, needs to provide the same standard of care as its larger, more traditional counterparts, without sacrificing function, efficiency, patient satisfaction, staff retention, or design opportunities.
