TOURISM TIDES - November 2011

PRESIDENT'S view

DEAR Tourism Operators: Our Island summer officially ended on Sept 23rd and we have now entered a new season. With this fall season, changes are everywhere from the temperatures to the vibrant colours of the fall leaves. I believe that as our seasons change, so must our way of thinking when it comes to the Tourism Industry on PEI. We can no longer open in the spring and put out the welcome mat with hopes that throngs of visitors will be waiting on our doorsteps. We have to find a balance. We have to provide an environment that will help stimulate ideas for future development of our industry. So

T

how do we do this? It will take time, energy and most of all, input from you, the industry. Focus, commitment and action will be required. There is no doubt that each of us will face challenges as we move forward but if we can develop solid critical thinking, this will lead to future growth. Changes have to be made. Does our market have to be reshaped? Leo Szilard once said "the most important feature of the future is that it is inherently different from the past and the present." Innovation will lead to opportunities and a changing industry that will keep us competitive in today's market. The future is in our hands, so let's take up the challenge and re-invent our industry. This will be my last newsletter as President of TIAPEI. Thank you for your continued input and support over the past two years. It was my pleasure to act on your behalf as President of this great Association. Regards, Thom MacMillan President

Working together to build a stronger tourism industry

ourism on Prince Edward Island is truly a provincial industry, touching every community – from O’Leary to Souris – and every aspect of Island life, from our delicious agricultural products to our unique artworks and toe-tapping music. As the new minister for Tourism and Culture, I look forward to working with all of our partners to continue to promote Prince Edward Island to the world. Government and industry recognize the tourism landscape across Canada faced some challenges this year to which Prince Edward Island was not immune. However I know tourism on the Island remains strong, thanks to the dedication of the thousands of Islanders who work in the industry. Thanks to your hard work, tourism is a major contributor to the Island economy, creating thousands of jobs and supporting important services for all Islanders such as health care and education. Tourism is based on partnerships. And by working together I am confident we can continue to strengthen Prince Edward Island’s presence on the international stage and grow our reputation as a world-class destination.

Dear Tourism Operators: It has been an interesting year for tourism on Prince Edward Island. Many things have happened that have impacted not only the success of individual businesses, both positively and negatively, but could affect potential policy issues dealing with the future of our industry. By the time you read this report we will have received the occupancy reporting numbers for August and September but the reality is, indicated by the numbers released for July 2011, we will have significant decreases in visitation and revenues this year. This can be attributed to a number of factors including the inclement weather and a depressed economy; and while there have been negative aspects, we must also remember the positives. We have had some businesses confide that business is down this year and others report their business was up. There appears to be no rhyme or reason as to why some areas of the province prospered while others experienced a marked decrease in sales and visitation. In the end, we cannot change the past but must learn from it and move forward in a positive manner. I will assure you that TIAPEI will work with all parties and stakeholders to improve the present situation through careful, yet creative planning. We will also continue to urge Tourism and Culture PEI to release the very important indicator numbers in a more timely fashion so you as operators are able to get an accurate view of the big picture and the statistics necessary to plan for the future. This, after all, is one of the main objectives of the occupancy reporting system. Since my last report, we have had a very interesting Provincial election and, as your organization, we intensified our on-going dialogue

with provincial government bureaucrats and elected officials. We were pleased with the efforts of our Election Readiness Taskforce which assisted us in identifying the main issues, developing an approach to dealing with these issues and opening dialogue with the 5 political parties. They were also instrumental in developing a communications plan to engage the members of the tourism industry as well as the general public. Some of the activities that took place under the guidance of this Taskforce included the creation and distribution of a position paper and questionnaire for the parties, one on one meetings between Thom MacMillan, myself and the leaders of four of the party leaders and hosting the first debate of the election campaign which happened to be the first ever debate specifically related to tourism issues. The debate itself was a firsttime effort and, although it was quite successful, we have identified a number of areas which we can improve upon for another time. During the election campaign we employed a number of methods of communicating, not only the TIAPEI message, but the responses from the parties, events and facts of interest and importance to the tourism sector and activities undertaken by TIAPEI on behalf of the industry. Through press releases, e-news blasts, Facebook, Twitter and the TIAPEI website we attempted to reach the broadest possible audience. We have a long way to go in communicating the value of tourism in terms of revenues, tax dollars generated, jobs created, community development, etc and our Election Readiness process confirmed to us this can only be accomplished through the joint efforts of your Association, tourism operators, your employees and all stakeholders in the industry. Let us make a commitment now to work together to do a better job of educating everyone on the value and importance of the tourism industry. As part of this commitment to increased awareness and communications, we have reinstituted a promotion we employed in the past -PAID WITH TOURISM DOLLARS. We have created a limited number of selfinking stamps that are available to

TIAPEI members free of charge on a first come, first serve basis. These are meant to be used by operators when you are paying bills by cheque and will go a long way in reminding your plumber, electrician, food supplier, etc. that their services and goods are being paid for with funds generated by the tourism industry. TIAPEI President, Thom MacMillan, and I have travelled PEI from tip to tip during this past year, meeting with operators, elected officials, federal, provincial and municipal bureaucrats, sectoral and community groups to discuss the many programs, initiatives and long term projects that have and will continue to have an impact on the tourism industry. Despite all of our efforts, we are hearing we need to get tougher and more vocal when communicating the issues of the tourism sector to levels of government. We agree with this but also challenge the industry with the reminder that many voices are needed to deliver our message. Make sure you add your voice to the cause. This year Island Fusion and the Arts and Heritage Trail joined other successful events such as Fall Flavours and the many festivals and events held across PEI each year. Both of these initiatives were very well received and plans are already underway to improve and expand on the successes enjoyed during this summer. Work has already begun on the 2014 celebration of Confederation. It is through projects such as these that we will put aside any disappointments we may have over the 2011 season and move forward toward a positive future. In closing, I would like to take a moment to thank the Executive and members of the TIAPEI Board of Directors for their on-going commitment to the tourism sector, their regions and to TIAPEI. Very special thanks must also be given to our out-going President Thom who has spent many, many hours, days, weeks and months promoting the tourism industry on PEI, the importance of open and honest dialogue between stakeholders in the tourism sector and keeping the focus on the main message - TOURISM MATTERS. Respectfully submitted, Don Cudmore, Executive Director 3

TOURISM TIDES - November 2011

How to make your website more effective on a small budget numbered lists, and short concise sentences, you will make the text more “web-friendly” and “scanable” for visitors.

If you are looking to quickly and economically make some changes to your website that won’t break the bank, and that you may be able to do yourself, the content on your website is the best place to start. It is the area that most businesses need to work on – either by creating more content, trimming it down, or just updating it. Review your homepage: Your homepage is your storefront window online – make sure it invites visitors to come in and explore more of your website. Give visitors a reason to click around. It should clearly identify who you are and what you do, but it must also allow visitors to easily find your products, services or information that they are looking for when they arrive at the page. If they can’t, they leave, you lose! Rewrite & simplify: Read your opening paragraphs for homepage and main pages. If they aren’t engaging your customers, then rewrite them. If your text is too wordy or blocky, or you use too much jargon, simplify and replace it with only the necessary information that people are looking for on that page or section. Structure your content: People are lazy when it comes to reading information on a website – they just want to quickly scan through it and see if it’s interesting enough to either click something else or to read further. By using headings, sub-headings, bulleted or 4

Write new content: Search engines love content, especially new content. Try to write some new content on a regular basis. You don’t have to write a novel, just some good valuable information that your customers will find useful. Give contact info: Hopefully, many of the people that come to your site are going to want to contact you at some point, make sure they can by providing clear contact information for your business. Just having a form for users to fill out is not enough. Phone numbers, emails and job descriptions for all staff and departments listed on your website is the key to success.

Add a sitemap: To make sure that search engines can find all this great new content, you should create a sitemap.xml file for your website. There are many tools online that can help you generate them, and they are a very quick and effective way to improve search results for your website. Monitor your traffic: Google Analytics is a free resource that you can use to monitor most of your website stats. Depending on your website, it should be easy to have your web developer install. This will allow you to see what pages are most popular on your site, from where and when the traffic arrives to your site, and overall how your site is doing from time to time. If you aren’t 100% comfortable writing content, a quick search for “writing for the web” will reveal

24/7 ON CALL SERVICE

many resources to guide you on how to write copy. If you still don’t feel you are up to it, or you really want to get the most out of updating it, consider hiring a professional copywriter or web writer to help or to do the work for you. Either way, just updating the current copy will go a long way in improving your website and its performance.

Parks Canada in PEI Season Review Parks Canada had an amazing year in 2011- possibly its best year yet! The National Park and National Historic Sites were buzzing with activity as Parks Canada celebrated its centennial, hosted special events and offered new and exciting programs. To sum it up, here are Parks Canada’s top ten moments of the 2011 season. 1. Their Highnesses, William & Kate, visited Province House and Dalvay-by-the Sea National Historic Sites and Prince Edward Island National Park in the event of the decade. 2. Port-la-Joye – Fort Amherst National Historic Site received major site upgrades and visitation nearly doubled! 3. The Parks Canada Centennial float traveled to communities across the Island appearing at the Canada Day parade (North Rustico), the Gold Cup parade (Charlottetown) and the Blueberry Festival (St. Peters) where it received the award for best overall float! More than 27,000 people saw the Parks Canada float in these events! 4. An archaeological dig took

place at Port-la-Joye – Fort Amherst National Historic Site that uncovered a possible French storehouse/chapel foundation from the French occupation period. Another dig took place in Prince Edward Island National Park in which a hearth from an early 1800s Scottish homestead and several artifacts, including an intact thimble, were found. More than 100 people had the chance to participate in these digs in some way! 5. Shipbuilding in Prince Edward Island was commemorated as an event of National Historic Significance in Cardigan. That makes 56 nationally historic designations in PEI! 6. For the first time, Parks Canada visitors had the

opportunity to learn about the cultural history and importance of a species at riskthe American Eel through a new special program developed in partnership with the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of PEI. 7. Newcomers to Canada from across the Maritimes roughed it and went camping for the first time with Parks Canada staff from three Maritime provinces at a “Learn to Camp” event at Fort Beauséjour – Fort Cumberland National Historic Site in New Brunswick. Eighteen newcomers from PEI attended this event! 8. Canada AM was filmed at Green Gables Heritage Place where the morning was spent

touring Green Gables House, oyster shucking, lobster cracking and listening to East Coast music. 9. The cast and crew of Anne and Gilbert wowed visitors at Green Gables Heritage Place as they performed scenes from the musical hit. 10. Parks Canada hosted a number of exciting special events including Bioblitz, Come fly a kite, Red Sands Potato Fest, National Acadian Feast Day, Picnic in the Park, the PEI Marathon, Dalvay-bythe Sea Triathlon, and Islander Day, as well as Pedal the Parkway which celebrated the opening of the new multi-use trail between Cavendish and North Rustico.

Promoting Careers in Tourism! TIAPEI LONG DISTANCE PLAN West Can Group and TIAPEI have been working together to provide excellent rates and services to TIAPEI Members for the past 10 years. A straight forward LD plan with No Hidden Fees.

“Discover Tourism” is a presentation delivered to Newcomers to Canada, mature workers, high school students and other career seekers at various venues on PEI. This fall Andrea Boehner, TIAPEI’s HR Advisor, delivered this presentation 16 times to over 400 participants, mostly at high schools. The presentation demonstrates the diversity and opportunity of working in the tourism industry and was developed by tourism industry associations across Canada in conjunction with the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC). The presentation encourages interested individuals to actively explore career opportunities in the tourism industry, and emphasizes the importance of education and training. Foremost, it promotes the industry as a viable career option with great potential for mobility and professional development. One way to get people excited about working in tourism is to show them a real life example

of someone employed in the industry, which is why tourism career videos were developed and added to this presentation and to the www.choosetourism.ca website. TIAPEI created 5 videos profiling industry specific careers. Students and job seekers can see for themselves what it’s like to work in a fast paced Line Cook position, learn the perks of working as a Food & Beverage Server, get a feel for what is involved in working as a Visitor Information Counsellor, delve into the day in a life of a Front Desk Agent, and learn the inner workings of being a Housekeeping Room Attendant. There are many reasons to work in the Tourism Industry – we are continuously educating people on the perks and benefits – take a look at the videos at www.choosetourism.ca, and help spread the word to promote working in a fun, exciting, and ever changing industry! Press Trips to Atlantic Canada Generate Significant Media Exposure in the UK The Atlantic Canada Tourism Partnership has contracted KBC PR & Marketing to increase media exposure of the region in the UK. The ultimate goal is to improve consumer awareness of Atlantic Canada as a vacation destination through print and online media. 2011 has been a busy season of press trips to the region, resulting in valuable exposure of Atlantic Canada to UK “holidaymakers”. A group press trip took place in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island in June, with six media plus a host from KBC PR & Marketing. The theme of the trip was “Giants and the Gentle Island”, and the itinerary focused on Hopewell Rocks, Saint John Reversing Falls and whale watching in NB, and the beauty, cuisine and “Live Like an Islander” experiences on PEI. Media participants were from the Daily Mirror, Press Association News Features, The Times Online, Sainsbury’s Magazine, Selling Long Haul and National Geographic. Features have already started appearing in UK publications. On individual trips, Atlantic Canada hosted media from the following publications: Evening Standard, Golf International and Golf & Travel Magazine, LBC Travel Show, Bent Magazine & Gaydar, Lonely Planet

Magazine, OK! Hot Stars Magazine, Scotsman Saturday, Sunday Mail, Daily Record, Sunday Telegraph, Sunday Times and the Telegraph. ACTP also worked with the Canadian Tourism Commission to host two film trips to the region. The Pilot Productions’ award-winning Globe Trekker series visited all four provinces, along with Quebec and Ontario. The one-hour feature program will air in early 2012 to an audience in the UK of two million on the Travel Channel, and to over thirty-two million worldwide. Charley Boorman, widely known in the UK as a celebrity adventure traveler, and his team also visited the region on a cross-Canada motorcycle journey. The resulting feature entitled Extreme Frontiers Canada will air as a four-part series in early 2012 on primetime television in the UK, and will reach over nine million viewers worldwide. Mr. Boorman will also publish a book on his Canadian adventure. The advertising value of Atlantic Canada features as a direct result of ACTP media relations activities in the UK is already over $500,000 in 2011, with additional exposure expected from this season’s media visits and other activities.

TOURISM TIDES - November 2011

Local Tourism Business Finalist for National Award Experience PEI, owned and operated by Mary & Bill Kendrick of Fernwood has been named a finalist in the Tourism Industry Association of Canada 2011 Canadian Tourism Awards. The experiential tourism company is one of three businesses in the running for the The Hilton Worldwide Small or Mediumsized Business of the Year Award. "After just 6 years in operation, it's a tremendous honour to be recognized as one of the tourism industry's top companies," says Mary Kendrick. Experience PEI offers tourists unique experiential activities designed to provide visitors with the opportunity to spend time with Islanders doing what they do on a daily basis. Working with local experience providers, the company arranges for people to go tonging for oysters, digging clams, lobster fishing, chocolate making, sandsculpting and more than 20 other hands-on learning adventures. "We created

Experience PEI after listening to our B&B guests at Briarcliffe Inn," says Bill Kendrick. "They would ask us questions about things they saw while touring the Island such as what are those people doing in the small boats with the long sticks?" The first experience they developed was Tong & Shuck with Future Seafoods in Fernwood. It was recently named one of the Canadian Tourism Commission's Top 50 Signature Experiences. "We realized," adds Mary Kendrick "that what we see as commonplace, visitors see as exotic and different. So we decided to create the opportunity for them to learn about what we do here and how we do it." Experience PEI has become the leading creator and provider of experiential tourism activities in Atlantic Canada. Their knowledge and expertise is now being sought by other tourism operators and agencies. They have done product development workshops in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia helping create experiences unique to those locations as well as working with Parks Canada and

Tourism Charlottetown. The 2011 Canadian Tourism Awards will be presented at a gala dinner at the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa on November 24. Experience PEI is up against a reservation systems company

from Ontario and a tour operator from Montreal. More details on the TIAC 2011 Canadian Tourism Awards can be found at http://www.tiac.travel/ awards/2011finalists.htm.

Time to Reflect The busy summer season has come to an end. Whether you came out on top or not, ask yourself one thing, what do your employees think? Your employees, those who know the business, who work day in and day out on the front line, always with a smile on their face, helping the customer as best they can – they would have some insight on what is working and what isn’t… right? What do you think they would say if you asked them these questions? “How do you think we did as a business this year?” “What is one thing you think we could improve upon?” “Is there any training we could send you 8

to in the fall/winter that would benefit you in your position” “What makes you proud to work here?” “What is one thing you think would keep you and your co-workers happy in your positions?” “What would motivate you to be more productive or a star performer?” These questions are never fun or easy to ask, but if asked properly, you as an employer can gain significant information and constructive criticism. If you are willing to take the time to ask the tough questions, this will show your employees that you value and trust them, and most significantly are willing to share important information with them.
