City of Design
area and cafe designed by David Karásek and Marek Štěpán, which also led to the creation on the terrace of an interactive object named “Cloud”. Marek Štěpán also designed the form of Café Robot – a space where guests are served by a robot and have their portraits conjured into the foam of their drinks. The permanent exhibition includes a work by Krištof Kintera entitled “Demon of Growth”, which grows up to the museum’s gallery and creates an imagined bridge between free art and design. The services for visitors, including the cash desk and Designshop, were conceived by Eva Eisler, who worked with the Moravian Gallery on an exhibition project for the Jurkovič House.
Exhibition Dramaturgy
The Moravian Gallery also tries to regularly present the winners of the prestigious Czech Grand Design prize. The Museum of Applied Arts offers an exhibition by the duo Vrtiška & Žák. They were the overall winners of Czech Grand Design 2021. Brno can look forward to the first ever jubilee retrospective of the global designer Jiří Pelcl. The exhibition will acquaint visitors with the possibilities and limits for processing various materials and a look behind the scenes at a designer’s work.
Fashion
Another indispensable and essential part of the new vision for the Museum of Applied Arts is fashion. A substantial section of the exhibition is devoted to tens of contemporary Czech fashion designers, including the iconic Liběna Rochová. In 2021, the best-known Czech fashion designer donated most of her fashion collection to the Moravian Gallery’s collection. The “First Lady” of Czech fashion and one of the most influential women on the Czech fashion scene is also the head of the Studio of Fashion and Footwear Design at the Academy of Arts,
Architecture and Design in Prague, where she has trained the newest generation of Czech fashion designers for several years.
Brno has truly never experienced this much design before. And the Moravian Gallery is one of the main actors returning to Brno a forgotten tradition and important role in the world of design.
