IT’S NOT LIKE THE ONE DAD BOUGHT!
THE ABCs OF TODAY’S TVs
by John Woodson
In this day and age, brand names and options are plentiful when you’re planning to buy a new television. Would you prefer standard-definition or high-definition? LCD or plasma? 720 or 1080? HDMI or DVI? Read on for a crash course in what we like to call TV2K9. • When buying a TV, the first consideration is to identify its intended use. If you spend most of your time watching 1960s sitcoms, you’ll have little use for the newest technology. A wide-screen model with surround sound just isn’t going to make Gilligan’s Island look or sound any better than it does on a regular old TV. If you’re a media junkie who likes to enjoy Blu-Ray discs in high definition, however, it’s important to know which equipment will best suit your needs, your desires, and your wallet. • Many television networks have expanded their broadcast from a 4×3 aspect ratio to a wider 16×9 format, but for the most part, only highturn the page for more!

THE ABCs of TODAY’S TVs (cont. from page 1):
definition shows recorded over the last couple of years were shot in this format. Still, wide-screen is the way to go. More networks will adopt this format over the next few years. What’s more, if you enjoy watching post1950 feature films, the wide-screen format more closely matches what you would see in a cinema. • When comparing resolutions like 480p and 1080i, consider the number first, and then the letter. A higher number means that more scan lines are used to create the picture, so higher is better. 480 represents standarddefinition signals (like the TVs of 20 years ago), while 720 and 1080 modes are used for highdefinition, widescreen broadcasts. And the letters following the numbers? The p stands for progressivescan, which provides a better image than those marked i (noninterlaced). If the term “progressive scan” sounds familiar, it’s probably because the technology has long been employed in DVD players to improve the visual quality. • A 1080p television is considered top-of-theline, followed by 1080i, 720p, and 720i. High-definition TVs are compatible with lower-mode signals, too. So while a 1080i TV won’t play in higher-quality 1080p, it will be able to show 720 or 480 programming. (For the record, all HDTVs can also show standard-definition programs.) • What does this mean to you? Well, if you’re buying a smaller TV or have poor eyesight, it’s quite possible that the only difference you’ll notice between a 1080p TV and a 720p model is in the price tag. You’ll pay a premium for the higher-resolution sets. Of course, if you’re really serious about “home cinema,” a 1080p set will likely serve you longer before video technology outpaces it. • Today’s flat-screen TVs are either plasma models or LCD models. In a nutshell, most critics claim that plasma TVs offer a brighter, better-quality image, while LCD TVs tend to last longer. This may be an important consideration: While older, picture-tube television sets could be left on 24/7 for decades without damage, newer plasma and LCD sets have a much shorter “active” life. (cont. from page 2):
• After a period of time (perhaps thousands or tens of thousands of hours of watching), the picture quality of an LCD or plasma TV will become duller and darker, and the set itself will eventually fail. As a result, even though newer sets are much more energy-efficient than their older counterparts, it’s best to turn the unit off unless you’re actively watching it. Do you watch TV during dinner? Or do you just listen to it? Try the radio instead. The two or three hours a week that you save might add an extra year (or even more) to the overall life span of a new TV. • What about projection TVs? They’re fine as long as you have the space. Unlike flatscreen sets, projection televisions require a larger footprint. But if your TV room is spacious, you will find that you can purchase a projection TV with a much larger screen for the same price as a smaller LCD or plasma unit. There are a few varieties of projection television units, each of which have certain benefits and drawbacks. One key to remember is that since these TVs use light to project video onto the screen, they look best in darker rooms. This is particularly true with external projectors that throw the image onto a screen located across the room.

• Most TV salespersons are honest, hardworking people, but there are exceptions. Some – but not all – use questionable tactics to move their stock. A good retailer will ask you how you plan to use the unit, and will steer you to a quality set that will meet your needs without breaking your budget. Whatever you do, don’t allow anyone to press you into buying a larger or more complex TV than you require. A 60-inch model sounds fab, but it’s far too large for a smaller room. Your eyes would be more comfortable watching a smaller set, and you’d save money as well. • Picture it: You find a great bargain advertised in the newspaper, and head to the store to examine the noname TV being offered. 5 Ways We Join Their Journey Family Partnerships
Learning as much about the resident from his or her family members and friends is the basis for all of our programming. We start the partnering process by working on the Biographical Family Interview. This is our process for collecting and sharing about the resident’s life history, preferences, routines and habits. This process is never finished. Our deep commitment to this ongoing, day-to-day research and respect ultimately means higher quality and value for our residents. The collaboration between family and staff members incorporates care and support for all the resident, the family and staff members. Our family and educational support groups are safe places for families to share and learn together.
Personalized Environment(s)
Tailoring the environment of a resident to make the surroundings feel comfortable is accomplished by working with the family and significant others. We decorate the environment based upon the resident’s past history and preferences. We plan activities based upon routines, past roles and human needs. We partner with families to ensure that the social and cultural routines and practices are incorporated into the surroundings and plans for activities and care.
Meaningful Interactions Through Activities
It is important that the resident feels secure and safe. Through interactions our staff members help the resident feel not just safe, but needed. We work to interact in ways that help the resident feel successful and have a sense of belonging. Our staff members are trained to be “pro-activity directors.” Everything can be and is an “activity.” Activity leads to a relationship. We believe that these relationships are critical to the resident’s well-being, so everything we do is geared towards building and nurturing these relationships.
ADL Assistance With Social Support
We take Activities of Daily Living one step further than most assisted living communities. By learning the resident’s history, significant habits, and preferences, we provide assistance in the context of the resident’s life. We encourage the residents to reminisce in an active fashion while assisting them in daily living tasks versus re-orienting them to reality.
All Behavior Is Communication
Rather than apply a label to typical behaviors associated with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia, our staff members search to find the unmet needs that may trigger behavior. Because many of the residents have communication deficits, we rely heavily on the behavior, as well as both verbal and non-verbal clues, to tell us what the resident needs and wants.

Gardening Expanded TidBits
Q. A.
In the Garden with Janet B. Carson
I have a weed in my yard called henbit, which has little purple flowers that are blooming now. They seem to get worse every year. I also have what I call green onions. What can I put on my yard to prevent these weeds every year? I live in Cabot, AR. Those henbit weeds are blooming now and doing great, along with a myriad of other winter weeds! Henbit is a winter annual and as such, it starts growing in the fall, begins blooming in late winter/early spring, then sets seeds and dies with warm weather. The problem is, the more they bloom, the more seeds they set and the more weeds you have next year. Using a pre-emergent herbicide in the fall can help, but you can also spray with an herbicide containing 2, 4-D in January, February, or early March, while the weeds are small and before blooming. Once they start blooming and setting seeds, you are a bit late in the game. Keeping them mowed short now can prevent blooming and seed set, but mowing actually increases the perennial wild onions. Pre-emergent products don’t work on those as they come back from the bulb each year. Try the 2, 4-D product on them now or pull them up roots and all. Some folks actually cook with the wild onions/garlic - but make sure no chemicals have been applied if you try them. Courtesy of University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service.
• There really was a John Deere who founded the company that still bears his name. Mr. Deere was a dapper dresser, though, so it’s highly likely that he never wore the iconic baseball cap that has become symbolic of his sizable farm equipment empire. • John Deere was born in 1804 in Rutland, Vermont. John’s father was lost at sea when the boy was four, so his mother took work as a seamstress to support John and his four siblings. The Deere brood didn’t always enjoy three square meals a day, but they never starved. As soon as each child was old enough to seek work, he or she left school and found a way to earn money. John’s formal education was limited, but he found his niche when he started working as a blacksmith’s apprentice as a teenager. • After a few years, Deere married and started a family. He took work as a “smithy” wherever he could find it. For a while, he found a steady gig fashioning the decorative ironwork used on stagecoaches. But John’s true love was crafting tools, which he did in his spare time. As his skills improved, he began to earn extra money selling his handcrafted shovels and pitchforks. Deere developed a reputation for his meticulous work. • Early in their marriage, John and his wife moved several times. Wherever he went, farmers would quickly learn that they could bring their broken plows to him. He’d return them to their owners better than new after wielding his “magic hammer.” After a series of business misfortunes, Deere moved his family “out west” – which, at the time, extended no further than Illinois. The family settled in the town of Grand Detour. Illinois has long been known as “The Land of Opportunity,” of course, and that’s just what it was for John Deere. • It was while living in Illinois that John noticed the problems that farmers faced when attempting to till soil. Because the area had formerly been woodland, the soil was rich with hummus, which clumped and clung to the blades of the plows farmers were accustomed to using. While repairing a broken circular saw, Deere stumbled upon an idea. He employed his smith skills to fashion the steel blade into the shape of a plow. He affixed two wooden spokes, then hitched the device to a horse. It plowed the heavy Illinois soil like a charm. In fact, a farmer who happened to be observing the test run immediately put in an order for his own John Deere plow. • In short order, Deere gave up his blacksmith shop and focused on making plows. The company grew steadily and added many employees. In the late 1840s, John relocated the entire operation to Moline, Illinois. Ashamed of his own lack of education, John sent his children to the state’s finest schools. One of his proudest days occurred when son Charles earned the equivalent of an MBA from Bell’s Commercial College in Chicago. • With his son Charles managing the company, John found time to pursue philanthropic interests. He co-founded both the First National Bank and the First Congregational Church. He was elected the mayor of Moline in 1873, where one of his first actions – the replacement of the city’s open drains with a sewer pipe system – saved countless lives by reducing the spread of disease. • The original John Deere logo, registered in 1876, depicted a deer that was native to Africa. Thirty-six years later, in 1912, it was replaced with the image of a North American white-tailed deer. In the decades that followed, the now-familiar “outline” logo took over as the symbol of the John Deere brand.

THE REAL TOP FILMS
Since the new millennium, it seems like some hot new motion picture breaks a box-office record almost every other week. That’s easy to do, of course, now that ticket prices for movies have approached double-digits. When adjusted for the value of the dollar, however, the list of the top-ten all-time U.S. movies covers a wider time frame… and is much more appealing! • #10: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 1937. This is the oldest entry on the list, and found a place in history as the first featurelength animated film ever produced. Walt Disney took a gamble that audiences would pay to see a 1.5-hour cartoon based on a Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Like most of his gambles, this one paid off handsomely. • #9: The Exorcist, 1973. Certainly the most controversial and frightening film on the list, The Exorcist told the story of a young girl thought to be possessed by an evil spirit. Like a few other list entries, this one also benefitted from a “special edition” re-release in 2000 that added $40 million to its take. • #8: Doctor Zhivago, 1965. Academy Awards seem to elude many films that sell a lot of tickets. Dr. Zhivago was an exception. While the movie failed to win Best Picture or Best Director, it still went home with five of the 10 Oscars for which it was nominated. • #7: Jaws, 1975. When a film really touches the American consciousness, parodies are bound to erupt. Thanks to its identifiable theme song and stirring cinematography that followed the action in unique manners, Jaws begged to become one of the most-parodied films of all time. Tributes appeared in scores of places: on the cover of MAD magazine, in the “land shark” skit on Saturday Night Live, and even during the opening scene of the comedy film Airplane! • #6: Titanic, 1997. This is both the newest film on the list and the only one to have been produced during the last 25 years. (continued on page 10)

“Ever since we got that big screen TV you never seem to leave the sofa. You really need to get out and exercise,” I told my husband. “Actually, I read about an exercise program that you can do while watching TV,” he replied. “I've been working at it for the past month. First, you take a 5-lb. potato sack in each hand, then hold your arms out at your sides for one minute. You do this several times each day until you can hold your arms out for 10 minutes. I'm at the next step now, where you do it with 10-lb. sacks.” “That's impressive,” I admitted. “Yeah,” he replied. “Pretty soon, I should be ready to put a potato in each of the sacks!”

THE REAL TOP FILMS (cont. from page 6): • #5: The Ten Commandments, 1956. Paramount was hesitant to pour more money into this super-expensive Cecil B. DeMille epic, but it was tough for the American public to turn down a film that was promoted as “The Greatest Event in Motion Picture History.” • #4: E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, 1982. The promotional blitzkrieg behind the movie E.T. was powerful enough to guarantee a hit right off the bat. The film earned back its $11 million budget in its first weekend at movie theaters. E.T. held the record as highestgrossing film in U.S. history for 15 years. • #3: The Sound of Music, 1965. While several other musicals have been made into hit movies (Grease, for one), The Sound of Music is the only one to make this Top-Ten list.

• #2: Star Wars, 1977. Still the third-highestgrossing film in U.S. history, Star Wars got off to an auspicious start. The film opened the last weekend of May 1977 and earned a paltry $1.5 million. But as more theaters added the movie, and word of mouth began to spread, the box office receipts kept growing and growing. A 1997 “special edition” theatrical re-release added even more to the overall grand total. • #1: Gone with the Wind, 1939. At a time when moviegoers were still accustomed to (and satisfied with) black-and-white fare, Gone with the Wind blazed on the screen like no movie before or since. It’s perhaps the most talked-about film in Western cinema. When NBC broadcast the movie over two nights in 1976, 35 million Americans watched, setting a record for the highest-ever Nielsen ratings for a television program.

THE ABCs of TODAY’S TVs (Cont. from page 4):
and sound of the sale model aren’t half as clear as the more expensive, name-brand TV blaring nearby. To make the bargain set less appealing, an employee may have set the color in an unflattering way or used a lower-quality input setting. You’ve made up your mind to come home with a brand-new TV, however, so you shell out an extra $700 for the “better” model. Chaching! You’ve just been “taken.” • What about inputs? Again, it depends on the quality of the programming you enjoy. With satellite, digital cable, and Blu-Ray discs, the preferred input is called HDMI. It provides the best quality, and also has the benefit of carrying both video and audio signals in a single cable, which reduces clutter. So if your source (cable, satellite, etc.) has an HDMI output, and your TV has an HDMI input, that’s the best and easiest route to take. • DVI is another digital format, identical in quality to HDMI but without the audio signal. (So you’ll have to use a second cable to transmit the sound.) Composite video uses three analog RCA cables to transmit the video. WANT YOUR OWNthat BUSI NESS? And finally, don’t skimp by purchasing the cheapest cables you can find, but don’t feel obligated to buy super-expensive gold-plated ones, either. A good middle-of-the-road set of cables will provide a picture you’ll be happy with.
