If there is a country, it’s probably had a king at one point or another. This week Tidbits delves into the world of monarchs and gives you some kingly facts on royalty. • As a precaution, Prince Charles and Prince William never travel on the same plane. • Marie Antoinette was the fifteenth of the sixteen children. • Queen Victoria is often called the Grandmother of Europe because eight of her nine children married into other European royal families. There are several current monarchs in Europe who are her great, great grandchildren, including Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, King Harald V of Norway, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, King Juan Carlos I of Spain, and his wife Queen Sofia. • Queen Victoria was also the great grandmother to the Russian Grand Duchess Anastasia, more commonly known as “Princess” Anastasia. turn the page for more!

• The only king in a deck of cards without a mustache is the king of hearts. • King Sobhuza II of Swaziland (1899-1982) reigned for a whopping eighty-two years and nine months, the longest of any monarch in recent history. • Other lengthy reigns include those of Louis XIV of France, with seventy-two years, three months, and Queen Victoria, with nearly sixty-four years. • Henry VI of England was only eight months old when he became king in 1422. • Elizabeth II has currently surpassed any record for long life held by a reigning British monarch. She is eightythree as of April 21st. • The oldest British monarch to begin reign was William IV, who came to the throne at the age of sixty-four. Prince Charles will surpass this record if he becomes king after February of 2013. • Mary, Queen of Scots, was only a week old when she became queen in 1542. • David II of Scotland married Joan, daughter of Edward II of England, when he was four and she was seven. He was crowned king one year later. They had no children. • Isabella Valois, Princess of France, was the second wife of Richard II of England. She was nearly seven years old when she became queen in 1396. Richard was nineteen. Purely a political move, the marriage ended four years later with the murder of Richard II. • Henry I of England had the most acknowledged illegitimate children of any British monarch. He had, at least, twenty-four known children outside his marriage. • The current youngest ruling monarch is Druk Gyalpo (Dragon King) Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk of Bhutan. He is twenty-eight years old and was crowned in November of 2008. • Buckingham Palace was bombed seven or more times during WWII. Probably the most widely reported of the bombings was the one that destroyed the palace chapel in 1940. (continued on page 4) Laura Waltman

Melanoma
Did you know that one in 32 Americans will develop a melanoma? Did you also know that one person dies from melanoma every hour in America? Melanoma is responsible for about 4% of all diagnosed skin cancers. Melanoma begins in the melanocytes, cells within the skin that give skin its color. Melanoma has been coined “the most lethal form of skin cancer” because it can rapidly spread to the lymph system and internal organs. With early detection and proper treatment, the cure rate for melanoma is about 95%. Once it spreads, the prognosis is poor. Melanoma most often develops in a pre-existing mole or looks like a new mole, which is why it is important for people to know what their moles look like and be able to detect changes to existing moles and spot new moles. We talk about the ABCDs of melanoma. A is for Asymmetry or not the same on both sides. B is for irregular borders. C is for changing Color or unusual Color. D is for Diameter larger than a pencil eraser or 6mm. E is for Evolving or changing. I, Dr Sandy Johnson, rely on F or Funny Looking more than any other letter. If a spot appears different from other spots or as if it does not belong, then I usually advise removing it so that it may be evaluated under the microscope. Both genetics and environment play pivotal roles in the development of melanoma. It is important to be as sun smart as possible to decrease your environmental risk. It is also important to perform self exams on your skin every month as well as have professional skin examinations by your Dermatologist every year. An easy way to remember that is to have your birthday suit checked on your birthday. We wish you many more Happy Birthdays to you and yours. Just please make your birthday and all other celebrations sun safe. … See WWW.AAD.ORG or WWW.JOHNSONDERMATOLOGY.COM for more information Johnson Dermatology ~ 9207 Hwy 71 South, Suite 9 ~ Fort Smith, AR Phone (479) 649-3376 ~ Fax (479) 646-0133

Anne, the last of the Stuart line, was succeeded by her cousin, George I. • Queen Elizabeth II has sent over 37,000 Christmas cards during her reign. • Queen Elizabeth II was also the first British monarch to visit China. • Queen Elizabeth II sent her first email from a Army base in 1976. • Prince Phillip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, was present in Tokyo harbor when Japan surrendered in World War II. • Prince Charles’s second wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, will never become queen. Edward VI died from tuberculosis at age fifteen, he willed the crown to Jane to prevent either of his sisters, Elizabeth I or Mary I, from claiming the throne. Despite Edward’s will, Mary had the backing of Parliament and when she took the throne, she had her seventeen yearold cousin Jane beheaded. However, Mary asked that it be a private execution – it is said to be out of respect for her cousin. • The Duke of York, Queen Elizabeth II’s second son, served in the British Royal Navy for twenty-two years. • King Edward VII, born November 9th, was the first British sovereign to mark his official birthday on a separate day of the year, choosing to celebrate it in May (continued on page 12)

HERE COMES THE BRIDE!
John and Susie sitting in a tree k-i-s-s-i-n-g! First comes love, then comes marriage – then comes Tidbits with a caboodle of fun, non-rhyming wedding facts! • One old wives’ tale suggests that the reason the wedding band is worn on the fourth finger is because there was a vein that ran from that finger to the heart. This vein was called the Vena Amoris, or “vein of love.” • The origins of the phrase “tie the knot” aren’t exactly clear, but historians do know that the symbolism of the knot has been associated with marriage since at least the 13th century. • White weddings really are a more recent trend. Before the Victorian Era, brides certainly wore elaborate dresses, but not in a specified color. Those with less money simply wore their Sunday best. • Although she wasn’t the first to do so, Queen Victoria wore a lavish white wedding gown when she married Albert of Saxe-Coburg in 1840. Due to advances in photography, her wedding photos were highly publicized and seen by many, rich and poor – and like many royals before and after, her fashion sense was widely emulated. The rest is history. • Jackie Kennedy’s wedding dress was designed by African American designer Ann Lowe, originally from Clayton, Alabama. • Priscilla Presley’s engagement ring from Elvis was three and one half carats and was surrounded by twenty-one smaller diamonds. • The average wedding costs $100 per guest. • Actor Michael Douglas beat out the King, though, presenting actress Catherine Zeta-Jones with a stunning ten carat diamond ring. • Henry VIII’s daughter Mary I was just two years old when she was engaged to the infant Dauphin of France. Upon her engagement, she was presented with a tiny ring, now considered to be the smallest engagement ring on record. • The most expensive wedding ever? That would be the 1981 marriage of Sheik Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum to Princess Salama of Dubai. The price tag? $44 million.

Q.
In the Garden with Janet B. Carson
Last year was the worst year I had ever had with my daffodils. I had absolutely no blooms. When I wrote you, you told me you thought it was a result of the Easter freeze and they would be fine the following year. I have to say, I was skeptical, but you were right. They were the prettiest they have ever been this year and they have almost all finished blooming now. What can I do to insure that they will be pretty again next year? All spring bulbs need a minimum of six weeks of green foliage growth following bloom. That is the time period when they are manufacturing food and producing their flower buds for the following season. The Easter freeze of 2007 damaged the foliage and cut short their rejuvenation period, thus we had fewer flowers on older daffodil plants last year. This was a problem statewide, but more scattered in some areas. For now, just let the foliage grow. A light application of a general fertilizer won’t hurt. Don’t braid or twist the foliage, just let it grow. After 6 weeks, you can safely cut the foliage and your plants should be back strong next year. When do you remove the brown dead stalks on a hydrangea? Growth has started on all of mine but there are the unsightly brown stalks. I live in Fayetteville. Hydrangeas should not have dead wood in them, unless they have suffered winter damage. If they have been winter damaged and growth begins at the base, the stalks that died will not have blooms. Prune them out. Hydrangea macrophylla--the big blue and pink flowering forms, set flower buds on old wood in late summer to early fall. If they get frozen back, they lose their flower buds. For NW Arkansas, this is a common occurrence, so we have been recommending the re-blooming types like Endless Summer and Blushing Bride. Even if they get winter damaged, they will still bloom on the new growth during the summer.

SIERRA LEONE
Officially titled the Republic of Sierra Leone, it is bordered by Guinea, Liberia and the Atlantic Ocean. As of 2008, Sierra Leone has a population of over six million people. Let’s see what else there is to learn about Sierra Leone! • The capital of Sierra Leone is Freetown. • Sierra Leone is home to Fourah Bay College, the oldest University in West Africa. It was established in 1827. • In 1462, Sierra Leone was visited by Portuguese explorer Pedro da Cinta, who gave it the name Serra de Leão, meaning Lion Mountains. • In 1808, Freetown became a British colony. • Sierra Leone gained its independence from the United Kingdom on April 27, 1961. • Archaeology shows that Sierra Leone has been inhabited for at least 2,500 years. • Krio is an English based creole language spoken by descendents of freed Jamaican slaves who settled in Freetown in the late 18th century. Krio uses all the letters of the Latin alphabet that English does, with the exception of x and q. Krio also has three extra letters of African origin. An example: Krio: Wetin na yu nem? English: What’s your name? • Sierra Leone is made up of many diverse geographical regions. There are plateaus, mountains, mangrove swamps and wooded hill country, as well as lowland plains, river basins and coastal regions. • Mount Bintumani is the highest peak in Sierra Leone at 6,390 ft. (1,947 m). • Sierra Leone Harbor is one of the largest natural harbors in the world. • The currency of Sierra Leone is the Leone. • There are two seasons in Sierra Leone. The rainy season lasts from May to November and the dry season lasts from December to May. (continued on page 10)

SIERRA LEONE (cont. from page 6): • English is the official language, but Krio is more widely spoken. • Sierra Leone is slightly smaller than South Carolina. • Nzinga Blake is an American/Sierra Leonean actress and writer. She starred in Cartoon Network’s Fridays and is now a host on Current TV. Her father is former Sierra Leonean Prime Minister Cecil Blake. • The film Blood Diamond (2006) was set in Sierra Leone. • In Blood Diamond, Leonardo DiCaprio’s character speaks in the Krio dialect, although it is said that his Krio is spoken incorrectly. • Blood Diamond isn’t the only Hollywood blockbuster to involve Sierra Leone. Stephen Spielberg’s Amistad (1997) was based off the mutiny of the Amistad in 1839 and the subsequent trials. • Portuguese slavers captured Sierra Leoneans and sent them to Cuba. They were then sold and sent aboard the Amistad to a Caribbean plantation. • On July 1, 1839, the Africans seized the ship and tried to return to Africa. They were arrested off the coast of Long Island and underwent trial before being let go and returned to Africa. • President John Quincy Adams represented the Africans in the Amistad trials. • Benin born actor Djimon Hounsou starred in both Amistad and Blood Diamond. Hounsou received critical acclaim for Amistad and an Oscar nomination for Blood Diamond. • The Krio for Sierra Leone is Salone.
