Modern Easter is a blending of multiple cultures and religions, with roots dating back several millennia! This Spring, Tidbits celebrates some fun facts you might not have known about Easter, spring, chickens, eggs – and yes, even that big, ol’ Easter Bunny. • Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Actually, it was neither. Modern ducks and geese appeared in China 6,000 years before chickens appeared in India. • Easter Sunday is the 1st Sunday after a Paschal full moon, which is the first full moon after the Spring equinox and is specifically used to determine the date of Easter. Paschal comes from the Greek pascha, which comes from the Hebrew pesach, both of which mean Passover. • Some theorize that the word Easter comes from the early church, which celebrated hebdomada alba, or “white week” (because of the white baptismal garments at Easter.) The plural of the word white was later

misunderstood as the plural for the word dawn, which was translated into Old High German as eostarum, and later became Easter in English. • Another theory, that of Benedictine monk Bede, suggested that the word ‘easter’ comes from the Old English word Eostre, which dates as far back as the 8th century. • Eostre, Eastre, Ostara, Eostur, etc. all refer to the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring, who was celebrated at the spring Equinox. The name probably derives from the word and direction East, which suggests that she might have also been the goddess of dawn. • On Western calendars, Easter always falls on a Sunday within a 35-day period between March 22nd and April 25th. • An old wives’ tale says that burying an egg in the garden will protect against lightning, hail and weevils. • Red eggs are used in Eastern Christianity to symbolize the blood of Christ. Tradition says Mary Magdalene visited Tiberius of Rome to tell him Christ had risen – and to symbolize this, she gave him an egg. Tiberius replied that Christ had no more risen than the egg was red – and, according to tradition, the egg immediately turned red in testimony. • One of the earliest references to the celebration of the Christian Easter was in the mid-second century. Even then, it was listed as an already well-established holiday. • In Eastern Christianity, dairy products are prohibited during Lent. Eggs are considered a part of this food group, so another symbol of the use of eggs at Easter is the return of eggs to the daily diet of Easter Christians. • The Spanish dish hornazo is traditionally eaten on or around Easter and contains hard-boiled eggs as a main ingredient. • In ancient times, the cross was a symbol of the four elements or directions. Crosses that run diagonally, like an X, are called a saltire. (continued on page 4) Laura Waltman

Hitting the Lottery
Admit it, we have all fantasized about winning the big one. We all know exactly what we would do with a few extra million dollars. No problem. The problem is what to do with the few hundred or thousand that we actually have. It seems that the same principal applies to time. When we are working eight to ten hours a day we know exactly what we would do with free time. Then when we reach the age that work is not our primary activity, we start searching for things to fill our days. If you have worked for forty plus years, retirement takes a lot of adjusting physically and mentally. In budgeting money we have to prioritize our needs versus our wants. Time is exactly the same. The lottery that we have won is our health, our friends, and our family. If you woke up today you are a winner. If you live in safe surroundings, you are a winner. If you have access to health care and social activities and spiritual guidance, you are a winner. One study says that within five years the majority of lottery winners are broke. I wonder what the statistics say about retirees after five years. How many of them have wasted their physical and mental resources. We have spent our lives being deadline driven. We still need deadlines and accountability. No one should waste their skills, and yes, you do have skills whether you recognize them or not. Nature abhors a vacuum. So it fills it. Wouldn’t you rather spend those hours volunteering your services and making a valuable contribution than sitting in various medical waiting rooms? Unfortunately, many people today did not learn a lot of life skills. They may be a whiz on a computer, but sewing, planting, cooking and carpentry are out of their frame of reference. The best teachers are people who love what they do. If you have a hobby that has brought you hours of pleasure you should want to share it so that others can know that feeling of accomplishment. Check with schools, churches, clubs and home extension offices, you will be welcome with open arms. Advice for young people choosing a career is to do something that they love and they will never work a day in their lives. Why would that change with age? One of all our most basic needs is to be needed. And you have the ability to make that happen, find a need and fill it. • The Easter Egg Roll (not the food) is an annual White House tradition that dates back to President Rutherford B. Hayes, when he opened the White House Lawn to Easter egg rolling in 1878. • The cracking together of two Easter eggs is said to symbolize the cracking of the tomb in the resurrection of Christ. • The Easter bunny, or Oschter Haws, first came to America on the lips of German immigrants in the 18th century. • The use of a bunny or rabbit as a symbol of Easter is said to have originated in Germany around the 1500s. • Modern egg decorating is said to have originated from ancient Persia and the festival Nowruz, which celebrates the spring equinox. One Nowruz tradition involves the painting of eggs. This holiday also marks the first day of the Iranian New Year. • One fun Easter game is the tapping of eggs. Players take turns tapping their eggs against the egg of another player. The last player with an intact egg wins. • In some cultures, colored eggs are said to represent the return of spring because their bright colors represent the sun or the Northern lights.
• In some parts of the world, it is customary to prepare baked goods in the shape of a lamb at Easter. The lamb is both an ancient pagan and a Christian symbol for spring and Easter. It represents the newness of life and spring, and it also represents the “Lamb of God.” • The century egg is a Chinese delicacy. While they aren’t literally one hundred years old, the eggs are cured and preserved over the course of several weeks. • You can’t think of an egg without Fabergé eggs coming to mind. A true fabergé egg is one of the sixtynine jeweled eggs created by Carl Fabergé and his assistants around the turn of the 20th century. (continued on page 12)

Q.
Can you tell me what the tree is that’s blooming now all along the roadsides? It has white blossoms similar to the pear tree and it blooms around the same time, before dogwoods. I call it the ‘popcorn’ tree because that’s what it reminds me of, but I would really like to know its true name. Is it a variety of wild pear? The white flowering trees that are clustered all over the roadways right now are seedling, escaped Callery pears—the parent of our Bradford and other ornamental pears. They have started taking over in many areas of the state, and while they are pretty in bloom and with fall color, they are becoming quite invasive. All of the ornamental pears are from the Pyrus calleryana plant, but are different selections, such as P. calleryana ‘Bradford’, or ‘Capital’ or ‘Aristocrat’. The seeds from these trees don’t bear true and thus the seedlings that are spreading. The ‘Popcorn’ tree is actually another tree that is invasive in south Arkansas—the Chinese tallow tree that bears seeds that look like popcorn in the fall. I live in Bella Vista. I have a rose bush that I am having trouble with. It is about 3 years old and has beautiful blooms but I never end up with foliage. I start spraying when the foliage starts to show (such as now). At the nursery they sold me Ortho Rose Pride Funginex, I spray once a week. The leaves still turn yellow and then drop off. When I spray I pick off any leaves that have started to turn yellow. No luck, I end up with blooms and stems, nothing else. I think they called it a bush rose, bloom all summer, just what I wanted on my berm. Please help, the leaves has started to show. “Before the leaves turn yellow do they develop black spots? That is the most common disease of roses--black spot. It does start early and can defoliate the plant, however weekly sprays should be preventing it. If the leaves are yellowing and no black spots, I am wondering if you are possibly over-spraying and burning the foliage. There are several products you can also try. Daconil, funginex, immunox are all weekly fungicide sprays, but Bayer Advanced All in one rose care can be used every three weeks. Be sure you mix any product according to the label directions, keep up with watering and fertilization and let me know how things go.

TIDBITS ALL OVER THE WORLD:
ISRAEL
The Land of Israel has history spanning many millennia and is central to Judaism. You might have known the capital of Israel is Jerusalem, but let’s make a little more room for some facts you might not have known. • The Dead Sea scrolls, roughly 900 documents found on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea, are currently housed in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. • While the Land of Israel is ancient, the State of Israel is only sixty years old. The State of Israel was established in 1948. • Israel’s chief source of water is the Jordan River, which flows inside Israel for seventy-three miles. • Nahalal is the oldest cooperative agricultural community in Israel, established in 1921. Residents work together to produce crops through community labor and resources. • Israel has four main religious groups: Jews, Christians, Sunni Muslims and the Druze. • There are two official languages in Israel: Hebrew and Arabic. • Jerusalem lies partly in Israel and partly in Jordan, and was divided between the two countries in 1949. • Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv and Haifa are the names of Israeli cities, but are also the names of the three districts in which these cities reside. • Before the word Israel was used as the name of the current state, Israel was a term that could mean anything from Jacob of the Bible and the twelve tribes of his descendants, the Hebrew people who inhabited the “Promised Land,” the early followers of Christianity or the entire Jewish nation. • The country of Jordan separates most of Israel from the Dead Sea. • The earliest known use of the name Israel was God’s renaming of Jacob in Biblical times. God promised a nation would come from Jacob, which started the usage of the name Israel in reference to Jacob and the twelve tribes of his descendants. (continued on page 10)

Israel (cont. from page 6): • Hebrews were called the “tribes of the people of Israel” from 1200 – 1020 B.C. • After King Solomon’s death in 922 B.C., Israel was split into two kingdoms. The south became Judah and the north became Israel. • However, Judah became known as Israel after the northern kingdom was conquered by the King of Assyria in 721 B.C. • Pompey conquered Jerusalem in 63 B.C., making it part of the Roman Empire. In 66 A.D., the Jews broke free of Rome and named their new kingdom, you guessed it, Israel. However, the revolt was defeated and Israel remained under Roman rule. • Musician Gene Simmons and Actress Natalie Portman were both born in Israel, Haifa and Jerusalem respectively. Portman’s real last name is Hershlag and Simmons was born Chaim Witz. • Israel became part of the Ottoman Empire in the 1500s, remaining so until the 1900s, and was part of the province of Syria. The area was named Palestine when the British took control in 1917. • The highest temperature recorded in Asia, 129.0 °F (53.9 °C), was recorded in Tirat Tsiv, Israel in 1942. • In Israel, high school is only three years long and begins at the 10th grade. • Israel, when referring to Jacob, is mentioned in the Christian Bible, the Jewish Torah and the Muslim Qu’ran. Israel is translated as Yisreal in Hebrew and Isra’il in Arabic.

• Fabergé presented fifty of the eggs to Tsar Alexander III and Nicholas II of Russia. Alexander III commissioned the first egg for his wife, Maria Fyodorovna, grandmother of “Princess” Anastasia. • Only sixty-one of the original fabergé eggs have survived to present day. • Early Christians celebrated Easter on the 14th day of Nisan, which was the day of preparation for Passover. • The egg, along with rabbits, has long been a symbol of rebirth for numerous religions. The egg represents birth, while rabbits, with their large litters in early Spring, symbolize propensity and fertility – and both are representative of the growth of spring. • As for the origins of Easter baskets, one theory suggests they trace back to early celebrations of the Christian church. After Lent there was a great feast. Foods would be brought to the temple in large baskets, hence the giving of treats in baskets on Easter.
