by Sarah Bates
Thirty-four years and hundreds of episodes later, Saturday Night Live! is still running strong and making millions of Americans laugh every Saturday. This week Tidbits goes behind the gaffs and laughs, from the days of Chevy Chase and Bill Murray, right up to Andy Samberg and Tina Fey! • Saturday Night Live (SNL) was originally called NBC’s Saturday Night, as the name was already in use by ABC. NBC purchased the rights to the name in 1976. • SNL’s producer and creator, Lorne Michaels, is originally from Canada and was born Lorne Michael Lipowitz. • Michaels has also produced shows like Kids in the Hall and 30 Rock and such movies as Wayne’s World, Tommy Boy and Mean Girls. • Comedian Mike Meyers supposedly based his character of Dr. Evil on Lorne Michaels. There was even an SNL skit on the subject. turn the page for more!

• SNL has won 23 Emmys in its thirty-four years on the air. • Best known for his impersonation of President Clinton, Darrell Hammond sets the record for longest running cast member with 14 seasons under his belt. • Hammond later impersonated Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in 2007’s Epic Movie. • Except for season seven, Don Pardo has been the announcer for SNL since its debute in 1975. Though he officially retired from NBC in 2004, Pardo still flies in each week to announce the show. He is 90 years old. • Steve Martin has hosted SNL fifteen times, the most of any guest host. Paul Simon has the record as musical guest with nine appearances. • The Rolling Stones were the first band to host and appear as musical guests on an episode. • Britney Spears set a record as youngest host/musical guest when she appeared on SNL at the age of 18. • Chevy Chase was the first cast member to return and host the show in 1978. • Several of the SNL sketches have gone on to be made into films. The highest grossing of these was 1992’s Wayne’s World, which brought in $121 million. Wayne’s World first appeared in 1989, season 14. • Celebrity Jeopardy! is a famous SNL sketch running from 1996-2002. In later interviews, former cast member Norm MacDonald said he created the sketch just so he could do his impersonation of Burt Reynolds, who MacDonald said is also a fan of the sketch. • American comedian, Christopher Guest, is the only former cast member who holds a title of nobility in the United Kingdom. He is officially titled Christopher Haden-Guest, 5th Baron Haden-Guest. Guest is married to actress Jamie Lee Curtis. You might also recognize Guest as the six-fingered Count Rugen from The Princess Bride. (continued on page 4)

Scammers Target the Elderly
With the economy slowing down the way it has, it’s no wonder some people are a desperate for money. Unfortunately, some of them are perpetuating scams on FULLER BRUSH / STANLEY seniors. Also unfortunately, it’s not always easy to tell when Home Products you’re faced with a scam. Sometimes the fraud involves Call for Catalog getting you to help scammers move money out of a war(479) 996-4738 torn country, and “you” are the one they’ve picked to trust Or go to: www.FullerDirect.com/0673583 with their millions. Of course, to show good faith, you need to send them money first. Rule of thumb: Anytime a YESTER-DAZE stranger wants you to do anything involving cashing checks 2220 Alma Hwy. ~ Van Buren, AR or accessing your bank accounts, it’s a scam. Then there’s Antiques, Furniture, Home Decor & More the scam that tries to get you upset about a grandchild. You JODY WHITWORTH Owner & Happy Decorator get a phone call, and the person at the other end says, “This 479-221-6172 is your grandson. I’m in trouble. Don’t tell my parents.” Yesterdaze34@hotmail.com The hope is that you won’t bother to verify that it really is your grandchild, and that you’ll immediately rush down to wire funds to bail him out of his problem. Rule of thumb: Verify, verify, verify. Don’t send a dime until you do. One scam that’s especially sneaky and plays on our wish to be good citizens is about jury duty. You’ll get a call saying Answer on Page 9 you’re about to be arrested for failing to show up for jury duty. When you say that you never got the notice to appear, you’ll be asked to give your Social Security number and date of birth so your name can be verified on the list. Don’t do it. The instant you give that information, you’re in line to become a victim of identity theft. Rule of thumb: Nobody in the court system is going to ask you for that information or intimidate you about jury duty.

Q. A.
In the Garden with Janet B. Carson
What do you spray liriope or monkey grass with to kill the Bermuda grass that gets in the monkey grass? How do you do it? Let the Bermuda grass green up and begin growing before spraying with a grass specific herbicide. Some common names are: Grass-bgone, Ornamec, Over the top and Poast. It works well on most non-grass ornamentals. Monkey grass or liriope is not a true grass, but a member of the lily family, thus it won’t be damaged by the herbicide. You mix the product according to label directions and spray on the grass. Our church group is going to build planters for the Daisy Bates Elementary School. The children will be using them to grow vegetables. Our question is: What is the formula or ratio of mixture that would work best for gardens in Little Rock regarding vegetable growing? I would use equal parts sandy loam and compost. Once you mix the two together then you should have an excellent medium in which to grow plants. Have your soil tested after you have your mix. A general rule of thumb for a vegetable garden is to start with a complete fertilizer (13-13-13) broadcast throughout-roughly 3 pounds per 100 foot row. Then side dress with another application in about four to six weeks. Mulch the plants and water as needed.

TIDBITS TESTIMONIAL March 17, 2009 Tom, I went to my dentist, Dr. Gary Hawthorne, on Greenwood Ave. in Ft. Smith, last Wednesday. While he was working on me he told me he saw my Allstate ad in Tidbits. He picked up Tidbits at a cafe on the way to a fishing trip in Ozark & said “It was a neat magazine, they hook you by making you read through to finish the quiz”. He viewed all of the ads and stated that “(Tidbits) had a unique group of advertisers”.

Advertising In A Down Economy
In a study of U.S. recessions, McGraw-Hill Research analyzed 600 companies from 1980 - 1985. The results showed that firms that maintained or increased their advertising expenditures during the recession of 1981 - 1982, averaged significantly higher sales growth, both during the recession and for the following three years, than those that eliminated or decreased advertising. By 1985, sales of companies that were aggressive recession advertisers had risen 256% over those that didn’t keep up their advertising. In the marketing world it is a well-known fact that you should grow your BUSINESS in a down economy and grow your SALES in an up economy. That’s because many businesses fail to advertise in down economies – that gives YOU the advantage to leap forward by getting more consumer attention through your ad. Consistent advertising is a benefit to your business. It maintains confidence among your current customers. Maintaining customers is far less expensive than trying to find new ones. Market identity is key. Consistent advertising also prevents customer loss to your competitors that are continuing to advertise in a down economy. And - consistent marketing will give you the market advantage over those competitors that decrease or stop advertising. Remember – things will turn around and the economy will revive –and so will you. The question is… Are you going to just be hanging on when we turn around or will you be ahead of the pack? Think you can’t afford to advertise your business? Tidbits has one of the largest readerships & distribution networks of any publication in this area! Tidbits ads are a very reasonable investment in the future of your business! Reach our 22,000+ readers for as little as $15/week (even less for long term advertisers). Pick up the latest free copy of Tidbits at one of our many locations in Western Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma (see list at www.tidbitsarok.com). Don’t have time to pick up a copy? TIDBITS ALL OVER THE WORLD:
ZIMBABWE
Formerly known as Southern Rhodesia, this land-locked nation lies between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers in South-Eastern Africa. In honor of its Independence Day, which is on April 18th, Tidbits gives you some fun facts about the Republic of Zimbabwe. • The capital of Zimbabwe, and its largest city, is Harare. • Zimbabwe gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1980. • Zimbabwe is bordered by Botswana, South Africa, Zambia and Mozambique. • Most researchers believe the name Zimbabwe derives from the Shona words “Dzimba dza mabwe,” which means “great house of stone.” This phrase refers to the ruins of Great Zimbabwe. • Great Zimbabwe is the name of a set of stone ruins located in South East Zimbabwe and is some of the oldest and largest stone structures in Southern Africa. • Great Zimbabwe spans over approximately 1,800 acres and was built and expanded upon over a course of 300 years. It was begun around the 11th century. • 19th century European explorers were stunned by its workmanship, as it was built with no mortar. • Great Zimbabwe was estimated to have had a population of over 10,000 at its peak, though only 200 or 300 of the elite were said to have lived in the main structure. • In 1888, British colonialist Cecil Rhodes obtained mining rights in the area. In 1895, the British South Africa Company gave the area the name Rhodesia. • Southern Rhodesia became a self-governing British colony in 1923. • Victoria Falls, the world’s largest curtain of falling water, is located on the Zambezi River and is shared by Zimbabwe and Zambia. Victoria Falls National Park is one of eight national parks in Zimbabwe. (continued on page 10)

ZIMBABWE (cont. from page 6): • Locals call the falls Mosi-oa-Tunya, which means “the smoke that thunders.” • The water from the Zambezi river tumbles 328 ft (100 m) to the bottom of the falls and the width of the falls is over 1 mile (1.8 km). • The national symbols of Zimbabwe are the Zimbabwe Bird and the Balancing Rocks. • The Zimbabwe Bird design is taken from the soapstone bird carvings on the walls of Great Zimbabwe. • The Balancing Rocks are geological formations found all over Zimbabwe. The rocks, of varying shapes and sizes, are perfectly balanced without any other supports. The Balancing Rocks depicted on the current Zimbabwean currency are located in Matobo National Park. • The Limpopo River makes up Zimbabwe’s entire southern border, separating the country from South Africa. • The highest peak in Zimbabwe is Mount Nyangani, at 1.6 miles wide (2593 meters). • Mount Nyangani is about 15 km from the town of Nygana, a popular tourist destination. Nygana is also home to the highest waterfalls in the country, Mtzari Falls, at about 2493 ft (760 m) high. • The Ziwa ruins are also located in Nygana. They have been dated to the 17th century and are a national monument of Zimbabwe. • World Golf Hall of Famer Nick Price is a citizen of Zimbabwe.
