They performed this amazing feat without guides or supplemental oxygen. • The three men were aware of the perils they faced before beginning the journey. They were told that snow conditions would be unstable, but they couldn’t have foreseen the Class 4 avalanche that nearly killed them. • It was Simone Moro, the veteran climber from Italy, who first freed himself, then helped the other two men dig out of the massive wall of ice.
