Hunan’s Chinese Restaurant You can always find a hot, fresh lunch and dinner buffet for a great price at Hunan’s in Foley and their take-out food is unbeatable. We stopped in for a late take out dinner and were pleased to find that our food was not packed in typical Chinese take-out boxes. Hunan’s uses plate style boxes and they are always filled to the brim, making sharing entrees fun for the family. We chose sesame chicken, shrimp fried rice, vegetable lo mein, kung pao chicken and eggrolls. We had our very own “buffet” at home and enjoyed dinner as well as leftovers for lunch the next day. Their eggrolls are among the best in the county, so be sure to order plenty to go with your meal. Hunan’s Chinese Restaurant is located at 306 East Laurel Avenue in Foley. BCHM is the story about the people who cleared the land, built the towns and wrenched a future for all of us from the swamps and forests of Baldwin County. Theirs is the sacrifice that gave us the life we enjoy in this place today, and we are forever in debt to these pioneers. It is the reason the BCHM exists today with the mission to protect and preserve their story.
BCHM was organized in 1981 as a private non-profit 501(c) 3 museum with the mission to preserve the heritage of the family and early farm culture of Baldwin County through the creation of a home for historically significant buildings, artifacts and documents from community life. Its collection has been divided into the four universally accepted cornerstones of rural society in America; Church, Home, School and Community. It began as “the people’s museum,” built on their gifts and donations, hard work and unselfish time. Unlike the current “turf culture” that most often divides many in our county today; the original museum founders came from all parts of the county to contribute toward developing the concept and laying the groundwork for the BCHM. This passion and effort were carried forward by others over the past thirty years, and resulted in a facility noted for its heritage education and preservation. Noteworthy, is the praise received by all whom have had the opportunity to visit the museum, see its improvement and experience its many interesting exhibits. Additionally, this summer AGCCA had a school mission trip to Costa Rica where teachers and students were able to serve others in a foreign context for 10 days. At AGCCA we want to impress on our students that we have opportunities every day to serve God and serve others in His kingdom. In addition to serving God, we have also been earnestly working to prepare for the school accreditation process. We are excited to host our on site visit for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the National Christian Schools Association during April of the 2012-2013 school year. We feel that this accreditation will serve to further validate the excellent education that our students already receive each year. To coincide with SACS accreditation, we have also added a mobile computer lab to our school. We have purchased a classroom set of laptops and plan to use the school’s existing Wi-Fi service to bring the computer lab to our classrooms. We have also hired a certified Art teacher to our staff for the 2012-2013 school year to further serve the needs and talents of our student body. Tamatha Graves expressed that the experience was one of the most trying of their lives and dealing with the callousness of those in the liquidation business was heartbreaking. She and her husband resolved that, when they got back on their feet, they would open a business that would extend compassion to others in time of hardship. BE IT EVER SO HUMBLE Whoever you are and wherever you live, it is likely that you have a lot of pride in your hometown, your school, your football team, and other things associated with “home”. That is not bad- it is good! We are who we are, largely because of where we came from. We are bound together with the land and the faces and the places where we have lived our lives. My wife remembers that even when times were hard, she enjoyed the sights and scents of the orange groves and the mango trees, the grapefruits and the avocadoes of South Florida. She will never get the sand out of her shoes. Anything below sixty degrees is so cold she says she is “freezing”! On the other hand, I was raised in a working-class family in Birmingham, where my father worked in the steel mills for over forty years. Some people might say that Birmingham was a bad place to have to live. Well, they are definitely a few fries short of a happy meal! The smell of soot and coal dust and molten metal, believe it or not, is very pleasant to me! As I grew up, we ate well as long as the blast furnaces were putting that beautiful smoke into the air! We lived on a steep hill overlooking one of the huge furnaces in the distance, and from our front porch we could always see the fire as it burned day and night. When I was a very small boy I once visited my cousins in Atlanta, and my first question when
I got to their front porch was, “Where’s your fire?” I thought everybody was supposed to have an iron-melting furnace to look at! “Home”, whether the big city or the small town or the country community, was the place where we laughed and we cried, we worked and we played, we loved and we fought, we broke up and we made up. Home is where we first heard Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, Elvis and Buddy Holly, Marty Robbins or Simon and Garfunkel, Fleetwood Mac or Pink Floyd. Home is where we buried our sweet old bird dog, where we walked the aisle in a summer revival, and where we hung out until midnight at the Dairy Queen. Home is the place where we fell in love “forever”, and it actually lasted for three months. Home is a special place, not because of beautiful scenery and famous celebrities, but because it is the place where we developed relationships with the ones who lived there. It is a great place, not because of the standard of living or the cultural opportunities, but because its soil contains our blood and sweat and tears. It is unique and different and better than all other places because it is a part of us and we are a part of it. We poured our lives into just trying to survive there, and the very struggle of it all helped us to bond to the people and the places, the dirt and the concrete, the smells and the sights and the sounds of “home”. Recently I drove back through what was left of the old Birmingham neighborhood. Our old house still stands as a shabby shack. The blast furnaces are abandoned, and the fire went out a long time ago. The school I attended is a run down empty shell. A free-

way now covers the park where we played baseball. It’s sad to see that things have changed, when the way they were is so much a part of who we are. The ghosts of the past, the remembrance of special people and special times and special places, are never really far from our thoughts. We can cherish the memories, but we cannot go back to a place that no longer exists. Not only have those places changed, but we have changed, too. Let us find joy in living the life that is given to us now. But somewhere deep inside all of us there is a yearning for a place where we really know that we belong and are known and are missed and are always welcome – a place where there is love and peace, laughter and joy, satisfaction and fulfillment. We dream of a place where the bad people will be good and the good people will be humble! We hear the faint echo of perfect music. We catch a fleeing glimpse of incredible beauty. We long for more…. much more. I am persuaded that C.S. Lewis was right when he said that the presence of thirst means there is water somewhere; that the same One who placed this deep desire within us for such a beautiful place has also prepared such a place for us, somewhere, some day. Wherever that place is, it is not very far from those of us who long for it. And when we do see it, we will then know that we are really... finally... home. It’s talking about being full of power, to be full of wisdom so we may reel the likeness of Christ in to us. We are to be full of love by listening to his spirit, thus the necessity of prayer in the spirit and feeding on God’s word by praise and thanksgiving, also by giving of ourselves and the gifts of the spirit. Paul told Timothy to stir up the gifts within him. That means we are to stir them up. We pray, we read, we spend time in God’s presence. The more we read his word, the more we listen to his word, the more we meditate in his word, the more we praise him and offer thanksgiving, the more we worship him, the closer we are to him. Let us walk in the spirit that we may bear much fruit.
