March Shore Fishing—Spring Break from Winter Pier & Shore Fishing Forecast

As March days grow longer, so does the list of fish species. March signals the end of winter’s cold reign along the Alabama coastline and thus a turn to warmer spring weather with more fishing opportunities. But it’s a month of transition that can have many facets as the seasons struggle over the change. These weeks can exhibit all the variables from cold to hot (almost), and back to cold with plenty of rain, clouds or sun and occasionally even thick sea fog. And for the most part, water temperatures haltingly climb through the 60s in response to the stronger sunlight and longer warm spells. It can still be windy and rough at times, but most years offer at least some respites that allow coastal waters to calm and clear. The fish and people respond with more activity during the warmups that often coincide, resulting in some outstanding catch numbers for serious shore-bound anglers increasing through the month. The “Tides” of March Another seasonal change is the time of high tide occurring mostly

the middle of the afternoon on many days this month. The incoming tide is another factor favoring fish to feed closer to shore. Pompano, whiting and black drum are typical targets of opportunity for March surf fishers using fresh dead shrimp or ghost shrimp they catch for themselves as bait. The increasing temperatures drive fish to feed more often and for longer periods as the shallow surf zone is the first water to warm up early in the spring. A “tide” of a different sort is the horde of school-age kids and their families flowing to the beach for “Spring Break.” Also, there is a “tide” of migratory Spanish mackerel that begin to surge onto the Alabama coast as the season of pelagic fish begins usually by the second or third week of March. Unlike most of the Spring Breakers, these fish have migrated north and westward along the Florida gulf coast but they arrive here even more lean and hungry. Just about any small, fast-sinking lure works well for the mackerel, which are usually in large schools made up of highly competitive individuals. Gotcha plugs are a favorite lure for many anglers but they require an extra bit of caution (especially in tight quarters like the Gulf State Park Pier) because of the two sharp treble hooks. Many of the “old school” mackerel anglers like to use the locally-produced Looney Jigs because they often work just as well, are much cheaper, and have only one hook. A handy set of needle-nose pliers (or at least a hook remover) are necessary to keep fingers and hands away from those razor-sharp, flailing teeth and hooks, and to help with rigging heavy monofilament leaders (or a trace of light wire) to prevent cutoffs. The pelagic parade usually reaches a pinnacle in late March when the first king mackerel and ling (cobia) are sighted (and hopefully caught) from the Gulf State Park Pier. Large jack crevelle and bull redfish (and sharks of course) may contribute to the fray as well with the growing contingent of anglers who seek the big game species becoming more available as the water warms almost daily. Earning Your “Stripes” in March Another harbinger of spring is the annual sheepshead

spawn and the angling pursuits thereof. Once the schooling rituals begin, there’s no stopping the fish or the fishermen who practically line the rail at the spacious Gulf State Park Pier. They soak live shrimp, hoping to tempt these scrappy, tasty fish away from their more amorous activities and onto a hook, then into an icechest with a future invite to dinner (as the main course). Medium to medium-heavy tackle is all that is necessary to catch sheepshead. These fish average two to four pounds but may occasionally exceed six pounds. They can often be easily caught on even lighter spinning outfits spooled with 8#-6# or even 4# mono, which may be needed when the water is extremely calm and clear. Large hoop-ringed landing nets (lowered on a rope) are usually deployed from the pier to land sheepshead and other similar-sized fish. Someone nearby usually has one to use simply for the asking. A fairly small bait and hook (like a #4 or #6 Eagle Claw Plain Shank) should be utilized because the sheepshead mouth, though full of crushing teeth, hard bone and tough gristle, is relatively small. Also, use just enough weight to do the job under the conditions. Applicable weights can range from one or two splitshot in a light breeze and current to one- or two-ounce egg weights in a stiff breeze. Most of the time small live shrimp can out-produce larger shrimp, which are often simply bitten in half. And at other times fiddler crabs fished alongside the piling can catch many unsuspecting sheepshead as they graze on the algae and barnacles growing on the structure. “Marching” to a Different Tune The seawall and jetties at Perdido Pass as well as those around Fort Gaines and the West End Beach on Dauphin Island are other popular and productive spots for boatless anglers to fish for sheepshead using similar tackle and tactics during this time. The main difference (from pier fishing) is simply using a six-foot long-handled landing net to help complete the capture and safely navigate the more arduous terrain. Other fish species can be caught from these jetties with sheepshead in early spring while using live shrimp or ghost shrimp for bait. These include pompano, black and red drum, bluefish, Spanish mackerel and the occasional speckled trout and flounder. While sheepshead rarely (if ever) strike a lure, any of these other species respond to a variety of jigs, spoons, jerkbaits and hardbaits when properly fished under the right conditions. So, be prepared and try a variety of options for a variety of species to increase your odds for success in the varying conditions. And no matter what the weather is like or species you choose to pursue along the Alabama coast in March, we hope you have a great adventure and a great day outdoors!
