May the Fish Be With You May has every other month beat with more fish in variety and abundance, plus Pier Fishing Forecast and Photos by David Thornton

the best weather!

Of all the months of the year to fish, May has got to be my favorite. Just about any fish species we can catch will be caught (often in abundance) during the month as the nearshore water temperatures rise toward 80 degrees. And the weather is often stellar. Clear skies and light winds along with clear water are usually the norm. The catches from the Gulf State Park Pier in Gulf Shores range from speckled trout, redfish and flounder to pompano, whiting and

12- Beach Bits May 2015

black drum inshore, to include pelagics like king and Spanish mackerel and jack crevalle near the deeper end. And it can be a month filled with surprises too, like tarpon and dolphinfish (mahi-mahi), a sailfish (in 2013), and the six-pound, 13-ounce Alabama State Record pompano caught by “Tricia” Cluck in 2010. Most of the pier’s fishing activity centers on three or four popular target species: speckled trout, pompano, Spanish and king mackerel. Speckled trout weighing up to six pounds (or more) are spawning in the shallow waters. And any time the water is calm and clear enough, they provide some fantastic (and at times frustrating) sight-fishing opportunities. Anglers most often score with live shrimp on light spinning tackle

shallows around the Gulf State Park Pier or the seaward ends of rock jetties. They replenish their bodies for a couple of weeks prior to moving into the bays and estuaries for the summer. They feed heavily on invertebrates such as ghost shrimp and mole crabs (called sand fleas) before this move and are great targets for anglers in the right place at the right time rigged with the right bait. They are most often caught on live shrimp (or even pieces of fresh dead shrimp) and are suckers for ghost shrimp and sand fleas fished on bottom with a Carolina Rig presentation. Black drum, pompano and flounder are bonus bycatch while targeting sheepshead at this time. Warming water attract more baitfish around the pier in mid to late April, so look for speckled trout to show up in increasing numbers and gather in prespawn schools. They are often sightcast to by experienced pierfishers with freelined live shrimp on light (or even ultralight) tackle. They can also be caught by drifting live shrimp four- to six-feet deep under a small float. And pompano are a common bycatch to this method. The Spanish mackerel bite is most often primary on pier anglers’ minds through April as larger and larger fish move into the area. Mature females follow the initial March migration of yearling and smaller male fish as they gather around the pier to spawn and feast on the abundant supply of baitfish like scaled sardines (called LYs). The bigger Spanish can be caught on the same jigs, spoons and small plugs as the smaller mackerel, but medium-sized plugs like Rapala X-Rap and Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow are favorites for anglers wishing to target the larger specimens. Patient anglers near the end of the pier drift fishing live LYs, “snobbling” dead cigar minnows, or casting larger plugs. They are often rewarded by the slashing strikes of king mackerel which at times can leave a “smoke trail” as they hook up and the line cuts quickly through the water. Most of these kings are eight- to 12-pounds but can top 20 pounds at times. So, many anglers employ 15# to 20# class spinning tackle for them, but they are often hooked (and caught) on lighter gear too. Bull redfish, jack crevelle and even an occasional cobia

Beach Bits May 2015- 13

Many dedicated king mackerel anglers like to catch these baitfish with small Sabiki rigs (gold hook rigs), or the LY Ribbon (Red Ribbon Rig) and cast or float these out away from the pier into the path of marauding mackerel, or pin one under a float on a trolley rig to await a passing king of other large predator fish. Additionally, frequent catches of flounder and even a few sheepshead may still be had after their spring spawning duties are completed. Oftentimes, there is so much to catch with so little time in May, and other great fishing options are available for shore anglers as well. Pompano are probably the favorite target for surf fishers in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores westward toward Fort Morgan this month. Most anglers simply soak two-hook bottom rigs on the bottom with pieces of dead shrimp, sandfleas or ghost shrimp for pompano. But they respond well to Pompano Jigs (like the locally produced Conner’s Jig) or variations of the Doc’s Goofy Jig so popular in Florida. There is always a good chance of other species taking the bait or lure such as ladyfish, whiting, black drum, redfish and bluefish so you just never know what is on the line until you see it. Beginning in May (and through the summer), speckled trout are the most common target species for surf and shore fishers around Fort Morgan and over to the beaches around Dauphin Island. Wade-fishing in the cool morning light while throwing top-water lures such as Rapala Skitterwalk, Mirrolure Top Dawg Jr, and Heddon Spook Jr are a growing pastime and lucrative way to catch some nice trout. But you never know if a passing jack crevalle, bull redfish or even a shark wants your lure or bait (or even fish) worse than you do. Later in the day, anglers often change lures over to a subsurface twitch bait or soft plastic, or even swap out for a gulp shrimp on a ¼ ounce jighead for flounder. Anglers literally have too many options to experience them all in one month. So, no matter where you fish, may you have a great day outdoors!
