“Ghosting” it Always remember that fish are cold-blooded and when their metabolism has slowed in winter. They may not eat for days and even then only in situations when tempted by a “delicious” morsel. Fishing even in optimum conditions with great equipment, preparation and presentation while trying to get fish to eat something that is less than desirable to them is a likely recipe for failure. Live or fresh bait is essential to getting cold-water-influenced fish to feed (bite). Refrozen or days-old shrimp, squid or fish are often not appetizing when fish are relatively inactive. Fresh bait means fresh dead, especially if you kill it yourself, and it’s not always readily available from the bait shops due to reduced operating hours (holidays) and frequent storms interrupting the supply. Anglers may have to get bait the old-fashioned way and catch it themselves. It often pays dividends (in caught fish) to join the fast-growing brigade of anglers catching their own fresh bait by “slurping” for beach ghost shrimp (Callichirus islagrande). This two-inch to four-inch burrowing invertebrate, which looks somewhat similar to a crawfish, is seldom seen outside its tunnels along the sandy shorelines because fish will usually eat them immediately. Still, they are a major food item for fish in the surf zone and practically all fish in that region actively seek and eat them. Gathering them for bait can be just as challenging as catching fish but there are some keys to make the effort worthwhile. Look for places where they gang up along emergent sandbars—usually at low tide—with little or no wave action over them. Water one-inch to six-inches deep is ideal for spotting the telltale inch-high, inch-wide volcano-like mounds at the top of each tunnel. In water that is deeper than six inches, clear water is a must to spot the small holes on the bottom as the exact location to start slurping. The tool is a three-foot piece of two-inch diameter PVC pipe with a pipe test plug attached to one end of a 3 ½-foot-long handle. They can be built for about $15 to $20 worth of parts or purchased ready to use from coastal bait shops for around $35. When the end of the pipe is placed on the sandy bottom and the handle drawn upward, sand and water are sucked up into the pipe, hopefully with a ghost shrimp. The contents are then spewed off to one side where the sand quickly settles, revealing the hapless shrimp trying to dig back under the sand. The slow-moving shrimp are easily scooped up with a small net and placed in a container (usually a bucket) with a few inches of sand and water for storage until fishing. They require no aeration and with a little care can be kept alive for a day or two, and even longer if the water and sand are changed each day. Rig it Right! As stated, all fish will readily eat ghost shrimp, and that includes the midwinter mainstays of sheepshead, whiting, ground mullet, croaker, red and black drum, flounder and pompano. The best presentation is on the bottom with light-to-medium tackle (6# to 12# line) employing a Carolina Rig (also known as a Fish Finder Rig) where the weight (either a ½ ounce to two-ounce egg sinker or a one- to three-ounce pyramid sinker on a sinker slide sleeve) moves freely on the line above the swivel onto a light monofilament or fluorocarbon leader.
