April Sets Spring Into Full Swing As water temperatures warm through the 70s, waves of pelagic fish move into coastal Pier Fishing Forecast and Photos by David Thornton
waters in hot pursuit of plankton-eating baitfish.
The north central Gulf of Mexico and nearby inshore waters come alive with school after school of scaled and Spanish sardines, threadfin herring, gulf menhaden, striped anchovy, and a host of others. The flood of life and spring blossoms are no coincidence. It’s April and this huge influx of baitfish is soon followed by a growing number of Spanish and Pier Fishing Forecast king mackerel, cobia and jack crevalle, semi-resident bluefish and red drum. All are here to feast on the ever-increasing food supply as it builds up just off the Gulf’s white sandy beaches. April Full Moon The first full moon in April (on the 4th in
12- Beach Bits April 2015
2015) not only determines the date of Easter Sunday but is a harbinger of vastly increasing numbers of bait and pelagic fish along the north central Gulf Coast. It’s one of nature’s signals which drive the timing for these fish at the beginning of their annual cycle of life. It’s also one that savvy pier and shore fishers have learned to signal when spring fishing should be reaching another high point of angling opportunities. The number of species available practically increases daily and the number of individual fish of each species explodes almost exponentially. Many of these fish (and baitfish) are grouping up for their spawn even as the sheepshead are winding down their amorous gatherings. Other species—notably cobia, pompano and speckled trout—are invigorated and schooling to spawn during this same period. And all are prime target species for pier and shore anglers. The Pier Has No Peer in April After weeks of spawning duties, sheepshead often gather in schools in the
shallows around the Gulf State Park Pier or the seaward ends of rock jetties. They replenish their bodies for a couple of weeks prior to moving into the bays and estuaries for the summer. They feed heavily on invertebrates such as ghost shrimp and mole crabs (called sand fleas) before this move and are great targets for anglers in the right place at the right time rigged with the right bait. They are most often caught on live shrimp (or even pieces of fresh dead shrimp) and are suckers for ghost shrimp and sand fleas fished on bottom with a Carolina Rig presentation. Black drum, pompano and flounder are bonus bycatch while targeting sheepshead at this time. Warming water attract more baitfish around the pier in mid to late April, so look for speckled trout to show up in increasing numbers and gather in prespawn schools. They are often sightcast to by experienced pierfishers with freelined live shrimp on light (or even ultralight) tackle. They can also be caught by drifting live shrimp four- to six-feet deep under a small float. And pompano are a common bycatch to this method. The Spanish mackerel bite is most often primary on pier anglers’ minds through April as larger and larger fish move into the area. Mature females follow the initial March migration of yearling and smaller male fish as they gather around the pier to spawn and feast on the abundant supply of baitfish like scaled sardines (called LYs). The bigger Spanish can be caught on the same jigs, spoons and small plugs as the smaller mackerel, but medium-sized plugs like Rapala X-Rap and Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow are favorites for anglers wishing to target the larger specimens. Patient anglers near the end of the pier drift fishing live LYs, “snobbling” dead cigar minnows, or casting larger plugs. They are often rewarded by the slashing strikes of king mackerel which at times can leave a “smoke trail” as they hook up and the line cuts quickly through the water. Most of these kings are eight- to 12-pounds but can top 20 pounds at times. So, many anglers employ 15# to 20# class spinning tackle for them, but they are often hooked (and caught) on lighter gear too. Bull redfish, jack crevelle and even an occasional cobia

are bycatch for this method along with the usual sharks that prowl the pier. Non-Pier Angling Alternatives April is the prime time to fish the jetties at Perdido Pass as well as those around Fort Gaines and “Katrina (un) Cut” at the West End Beach on Dauphin Island. These rock piles are popular and productive spots for boatless anglers to catch postspawn sheepshead, lingering black and red drum, and even ambushing speckled trout and flounder when using live shrimp on medium to light tackle. The shrimp can be free lined with almost no weight (allowed to drift in the current), presented three feet to six feet under a float, or even on bottom (Carolina Rig style). Also, migrating Spanish mackerel and pompano are common quarry around the rocks of Perdido Pass (often caught on ½ ounce jigs). White Looney Jigs on 30# to 50# clear monofilament leaders are the most common lure for Spanish mackerel in Baldwin County. The jig is typically worked fast and erratically through the water for Spanish, often near the surface to imitate a fleeing squid or baitfish. And the visual element of seeing their swift silvery flash adds another dimension of fun to targeting them. Pompano usually bite closer to the bottom and the best jigging motion bounces the lure up a foot or two off the bottom, imitating a sandflea or ghost shrimp. The jolting strike usually comes as the jig falls back toward the bottom, followed by a tearing 20- to 40- yard run as the fish quickly flees from the pressure. Some anglers, intent on pompano, set out hi-low bottom rigs with fresh shrimp, ghost shrimp or sandfleas to entice these tasty silver platters to strike. They usually set out several eight-foot by 10-toot rods along the edges of troughs along the sandbar, or look for breaks in the sandbars that channel water (and fish) in and out of the trough. On calm days when the water is clear, specially dyed and tied pompano jigs (like Conner’s Jig) or the innovative Doc’s Goofy Jig can be especially productive for shore fishermen to use while wade-fishing along the shore and casting out to the edge of the sandbar with light 6# to 8# test line outfits. April offers so many great shore-bound angling opportunities that it’s often difficult to decide which is the best method and target on any given day. But no matter when and how you fish in April, we hope it’s filled with wonderful memories of your great day outdoors!
