The BCHM is at a critical juncture. It has survived two significant hurricanes, (Ivan and Katrina), an implosion of our economy with resulting crippling funding cutbacks, the BP Oil Spill and a continuing uncertain lackluster economy and outlook which understandably makes for very conservative spending. It is the effects from the latter that has had the most impact on the museum; both from a financial and an operational standpoint. Over the past two years we have been unable to makeup the 50% funding appropriation cut by the County Commission through our efforts to increase membership and public contributions. In today’s economy, we simply can’t depend on charitable contributions to be the only key for our sustainability. However, in spite of the cuts and slow economy the museum’s basic operational expense had been met prior to this year. This was due in part to the BP Settlement the museum received in 2011. However, all current operational funds for the museum will be exhausted before the year’s end and this will unfortunately soon prompt serious decisions regarding BCHM’s future.

Although the name, Baldwin County Heritage Museum, results in many to assume that it is operated and funded by the County, to the contrary it has always been a private non-profit institution, free from the whim of politics and simply dedicated to its mission. And if it is to remain so, which I believe most of us would agree it should, then we need our citizens to step forward now with their financial support be it large or small. One dollar is just as important as ten, one hundred or even a thousand because often the most generous among us are those who often can least afford to give. Small amounts add up, plus all donations can be deducted from one’s taxes.

However this support must include our business, government, and civic organizations because of the benefits which are derived from the historical and educational largess BCHM provides to all of its citizens. Additionally, the myriad of activities related to tourism so important to the business community and our tax base. After all, serving the visitors and citizens of Baldwin County to our best ability is a goal we jointly strive to meet. For those who cannot support the museum financially, the giving of your time if only for a few hours a month is also important. Museum volunteers are needed for everything from greeting the public to maintaining our exhibits and grounds, as well as restoring our vintage farm equipment. Garden devotees or clubs would be welcome to enhance the beauty of our grounds. Students are welcome to complete community service hours. We, have the tools, if you have the time and can travel. Another generous way to contribute would be to become a member of the museum. A tax free annual donation of $10 for an individual, $15 for a family household and $200 for a lifetime membership would greatly help in our effort to build a solid financial foundation and enable BCHM to continue to be a part of Baldwin County’s future and most importantly its children’s future. Museums serve all communities and reach diverse audiences. They are educational providers and community anchors with a greater need today than any time in the past. The Baldwin County Heritage Museum is not an elaborate place of fine art and antiques, nor does it compare with those great museums or humanitarian institutions which have supporters of wealth who provide large financial endowments in exchange for recognition or other altruistic motives. Rather it is a place like Grandma and Grandpa’s house where both parents and children can come to learn about and see many of the daily items used by their grandparents or ancestors. It is the safeguard of those things that were a part of so many Baldwin County families, most now lost or unfortunately thrown away, which is the reason BCHM was created and exists today. I should STORE think it too would also be worthy of an endowment by those whom I trust will someday come forward in support, HOURS: because they also believe it is worthy of existence and do not wish it to become what it was setup to preserve...a Mon-Sat memory of the past.

CALL FROM THE WIZARD OF OZ [A story that has touched the hearts and captured the imagination of millions is “The Wizard of Oz.” These are just my thoughts on its most important lesson.] Somewhere this side of the rainbow we seem to have lost or misplaced our sense of adventure. We take no risks, upset no apple carts, ask no embarrassing questions, and express no doubts that we have all the answers. We play it safe, stuff our brains with clichés, and don’t dare go into unfamiliar territory. Every mystery must be solved. Every movie must have a satisfactory ending. Every song must resolve into a major chord. Every book must have an epilogue that ties up all loose ends. We want it neat and tidy with nothing left out of place. I have come to believe that the neatly packaged life is no life at all, and neatly packaged faith is no faith at all, and certainly I should know that the neatly packaged god is no god at all. If you can answer all the questions and explain all the difficulties about God, you had better get you a bigger one because the one you have is not God. Author Brennan Manning says in “Ruthless Trust” that truth cannot be left in the hands of theologians and purely logical people, but that we must “bring in the artists, the mystics, and the clowns.” They are here to remind you and me that life is to be enjoyed; that chances are worth taking, that we will never get it all figured out, and that it is okay that we are not controlling things.

The artists teach us that God is the author of all beauty, and He delights in His creation. The mystics show us that truth is found not so much in proposition as in experience. The clowns illustrate to us that God is not an uptight and angry bookkeeper, but is adventurous, passionate, creative, fascinating, and (dare I say it?) fun! How did we ever learn to make the truth about God sound so boring? I came from a background where I was taught to be “consistent.” I was supposed to learn to be predictable and traditional, to always try to “fit in.” No more! Now I am learning, growing, and changing, and I really don’t plan to stop! In the process I will sometimes be wrong about things, but it is a risk I am willing to take, because the alternative is to stagnate and die. Sometimes I tell people that if they only want to hear what they already believe, we could have all stayed home! Usually they listen and consider what is said, and then if it isn’t good they can set me straight. I have no desire to be a heretic. Frederick Buechner writes that “the killjoys, the phonies, the nitpickers, the holier-than-thous, the loveless and cheerless and irrelevant” are the ones who are quick to claim that they know all of the truth they need to know. Then he adds this remarkable sentence: “When Jesus is asked who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, He reaches into the crowd and pulls out a CHILD…. and says unless you can become like that, don’t bother to ask!” I believe that somewhere deep within your soul and mine there is

Page 21

a child like Dorothy; who still listens for another voice - a different voice - and faintly feels a longing to go beyond what we can see and understand and explain. We intuitively know that there is more meaning to our lives than to just survive and succeed on the surface. We are scarecrows desiring a brain... tin men in need of a heart... and lions who desperately want to become brave. We’re looking for the yellow brick road, and we need something or somebody to help us to find it, and, once we have found it, to stay on it. We know that it’s a terrifying endeavor, a very scary trip. When we leave our comfort zone, and no longer can settle for “business as usual” in our lives, anything could happen. There have been times I have glimpsed past the rainbow and turned back because I was afraid to go. But the call would not go away. I hope and pray that it never will. If you are still breathing, that means that there still are more adventures ahead for you. There are people to meet and to help, there are things to learn, and there are places to go, sights to see, battles to be fought, and tears to be shed. All of this is good, because it means you still alive. Once you leave Kansas there are really no experts to be found. We are all walking by faith and often stumble and fall. But the call that Dorothy heard, and the call that we hear, is not a call to go away. [ Condensed from “Broken Roads to Grace” by Jim Lee. A Note From the Editor

What kind of things are you sewing? Are they good seeds or bad seeds? Do you waste energies on condemning someone of a harmful habit while you are undermining your own health by unworthy emotions of anger, fear, jealously, worry or anxiety? Are you using that energy for the Lord by keeping an attitude of praise and faith? Time is wasted on destructive actions of entertaining such things as self-pity and remorse and evil doings. We can never give our thoughts free reign. They will never choose the right path until the mind is renewed in God’s word, the ways of God. You cannot control the thoughts that the enemy brings; however, you do not have to keep them. You can rebuke them in Jesus name, just push them right on out. Do not dwell on any evil thoughts. They can leave us as fast as they came if you won’t allow them. Whatever you sew in your secret thought life, you will reap. Sew love and kindness and you will be rewarded openly. Sew charity and forgiveness and you will reap that. Sew hope and you shall reap fulfillment. Sew praise and you will reap joy and well-being and a strong faith. Sew bountifully and you shall reap bountifully. Sew and you shall see your seed satisfied.
